As many of you know, today marks the third anniversary of PS3 and PlayStation Network. It’s amazing to think how far we’ve come in three short years. At launch three years ago, PS3 was a cutting edge gaming console, ushering in the idea of a forward thinking format like Blu-ray that few people had heard of. We were committed to that concept and how it would impact the gaming landscape for the next generation. Today, Blu-ray Disc is the next gen standard media format giving PS3 game developers a larger canvas to create games that continually push the envelope on rich, immersive gaming experiences.
In its infancy, PlayStation Network began as a free service to gamers offering an online commerce option for games and game content. Today, it offers an unrivaled social networking experience in PlayStation Home, a robust video delivery service for purchasing and renting SD and HD content from every major studio, social networking applications like Facebook, instant streaming content from Netflix, and a rich selection of more than 450 games for PS3 and PSP…oh, and yes, it’s still free.
Momentum is going strong and signs are only pointing up for us. In October, we saw a 70 percent increase in PS3 sales over last October. This was fueled by a marketing campaign that many of you have commented on, but also by a new slimmer and lighter form factor with a larger hard-drive for $100 less. We’re seeing hundreds of thousands of you joining the PlayStation family every day, and we welcome you to check out all of the amazing things that PlayStation has to offer.
We are really hitting our stride here and with how far you’ve seen us come in three short years, imagine how far we’ll go with the next three. It all starts with this holiday and blockbusters like UNCHARTED 2 and Ratchet & Clank, and only gets better in Q1 with MAG, Heavy Rain and God of War III.
Really, what I’m here to say is, thanks for all of your support. Without your enthusiasm and feedback, PS3 wouldn’t be what it is today.
this BLOG post is a total crock you stripped down this allmighty console to be almost nothing thay dont play PS2 games any more cuz u still want to sell PS2’s the slims dont run Linux any more cause im shure there is some exploit in it you took out 2 USB ports and removed the media card reader (not near as big of a deal as removing backwards compatibility but still lame) you took somthing that was an ideal god and reduced it to just another platform personally without any of the above features i would in no way consider buy any PS3 and to tell you the truth im really starting to hate the gaming industry such a lack of creativity in games almost everything is cross platform and hell if i wanted to play tomb raider (uncharted) i wouldnt play it with a dude come up with somthing creative sony you and all the other companys make me sick with ure generic sequils and franchizes sighn some exclusives make your system worth having over the rest cuz frankly ALMOST everything you have 360 has as well as PC

if GT5 is any thing like prologe or GT PSP its going to be CRAP i dont beleive in neither GT PSP or prologe there is no option to customize your cars or buy upgrades to me that what made GT GT and your gonna say well than go play NFS well NFS is unrealistick VS the GT series i preffer the GT series do to A. the cars exist any car i could want to own in life i can own in GT and more B. i can tune them customize them above and beyond the competitors in game and otherwise
without these features GT is nothing more than a nascar game

Happy Birthday Ps3… Question ive lived with this for years boiling inside of me… I have a Beautiful launch day 60gb ps3 and later got an 80gb ps3 for my girlfriends house… thank you for giving me AMPLE room to store my pics, as well as adding listening to me as a consumer and giving me facebook connectivity (that was sarcasm). Now… if you are doing the math that is 120 to GBs that i intially thought wow that is gonna tons of great music i can listen to… THANKS for all the features, PS Home, and even my pet… No can i PLEASE play my games with my own soundtrack, i am tired of playing Burnout Paradise (one of the only games that allows you to play our own music.) Could you please pressure them to develop more games like LBP and Ratchet and Clank please?
I am getting tired of all those mature games with their blood and gore. If a game has good gameplay then doesn’t need blood and gore to sell!

@252: Why the hate? If you didn’t want a “stripped down” console, you could have paid $200 or $300 more at launch for a full feature unit. Considering the increase in sales once the PS3 hit $299, it seems that most people don’t miss those features (or weren’t willing to pay for them). Those of us who did shell out the cash have had extra USB ports, card readers, and PS2 compatibility for three years now.
As for most PS3 games being available on 360 or PC, I guess you aren’t playing Resistance, Resistance 2, inFAMOUS, UNCHARTED, UNCHARTED 2, R&C Tools of Destruction, R&C A Crack in Time, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Heavenly Sword, MotorStorm, MLB ’09, God of War Collection and all the countless exclusive PSN titles such as Pain, Flower, Fat Princess.
That “the PS3 lacks exclusive games” argument is about three years too old now…

i do own a fully functional launch PS3 and am absoloutly disgusted thay stripped it down the way thay did ifi have to get repairs done and thay send me a system tht dosent have all these feature ill flip a nut
okay maybe lacks exclusive games was a bit harsh thay have several all tho there lame GoW remastered yah just what i wanted somthing i already had uncharted = tomb raider (again no origionality)
LBP was probably the only origional game i have played that might be worth the $$ even tho to me its pretty much sonys version of mario it allows you to create and enjoy your own levels and worlds wich is somthing i havent seen before
MLB 09 one thing to say to that sports games YUCK infamous meh rented it played it dont like itR&C = little kid cartoon games resistance is just the same as any FPS game just that an FPS nothing special iknow i own both of them same thing with motor storm nothing spectacular just racing games.
i want somthing truley creative somthing truley challenging somthing with a uniqe origional ide a fresh story line somthing that hasent been done before
sony dosent have to feel bad thay havent acomplished this with me how ever asw im sorley dissapointed in all of the games for all the platforms (as i do have all the current gen platforms) so its not just sony
would also like to note that im not a fanboy of any platform my 360 and wii make better doorstops / dustcollectors than anything wii lacks anything and everything i want in a platform and 360=MS=the devil (im a game collector that is why i own one) besides hell why pay for online games when 90% of the games are cross platform ill get it for my PS3 or PC rather than the extra $60 a mo to play for somthing i paid for in full once already any day

I have the 60gb launch model, but it’s not a happy birthday for mine it’s more like death day for the third time this month and I will keep fixing it untill it blows up. They should have gave consumers that bought the 60gb models an extended warranty or recall because of the overheating issue, like the xbox 360’s got with there red ring of death. on I would buy a new one but won’t because all the great things that they have taken away from the product that I use all the time. 4 usb ports, media slots, and backwards capability, just please bring back the 4 usb ports and at least a media slot for the psp memory cards, please. Sorry bout ramblin on but back to the whole blog issue, HAPPY BIRTHDAY PS3!!! RIP my PS3
