PSN Digital Comics Launch Today!

Grace Chen's Avatar Posted by Sr. Director, PlayStation Store

PLEASE NOTE: Download the Digital Comics Reader application in order to view the comics. You can download the reader via Wi-Fi, directly on the PSP, by going to the Digital Comics reader icon and following the on-screen instructions.

Hi Everyone, PlayStation Network launched a new digital comics service for the PSP system today. As you already know, PSP firmware update v6.20 included a Digital Comics reader application that is accessible under the Extras icon on the XMB. Starting today, you can access hundreds of digital comics on PlayStation Store, directly on the PSP or via MediaGo (on the PC). You will notice a new “tab” for comics, next to the game and video tabs. The digital comics store is currently available in the U.S. only.

Captain America category

In the store, you’ll want to check out the “free comics” category, for a selection of comics that you can download for free. You’ll also find a great variety of titles from our partners at Marvel, IDW Publishing and Disney and more. See the launch list below.

Marvel storetop Digital Comics carousel

The Digital Comics reader is unique to the PSP system and has an easy to use feature called Autoflow that allows you to zoom in/out and move frame by frame or page by page through the comic. It’s so intuitive, you feel as if you are holding and reading the actual book. There’s also a built-in music player so you can listen to the music on your PSP while reading the digital comics.

You can also check out www.playstationcomics.com for more info.

So will Canadians get this at the same time we’ll get the PSN Video Store? /sarcasm

@98 Marvel Comics also has their own digital subscription service which has been available in Canada for quite some time.

Add another frustrated Canadian to the list. What’s more frustrating than the lack of services, is the poor communication from Sony that goes with it.

Dumb question, but will the store update tomorrow since it updates on Thursdays. I really want some new older joints. Marvel from late 70’s to early 90’s was the dope joint…

Definitely need to look into giving us the ability to download these on the PS3. If I had a whole separate PS3 and the ability to get constant comics on it I would be probably have the harddrive filled up fast.

Where is the real comics?! I need manga. Where is One Piece, Claymore, Nyan Koi, D. greyman, Skip Beat, Akira etc?! Put something relevant up there… If it’s old school Xmen fine, but anything recent…pass.

With the number of Canadians expressing frustration at the lack of communication I can only guess that your personal email responses to us are getting blocked along the way. Please try again…or hey, you could just respond here on the blog.

Wife got me a PSPGo as an early gift and I’ve so far purchased 8 comics. They’re great, keep them coming.

Might I suggest putting up more age 17+ comics, I’m not too into the typical super hero comics, I like the dark horror/Sci Fi comics. Also like others suggested, it would be great to some eBooks on there too.

I just noticed that Marvel.com has an online subscription service w/rates $4.99mth for an annual subscription and $9.99mth for the monthly subscription. Will we be getting similar subscription options?

I downloaded the first two issues of The Road to Civil War last night and I am really impressed with the reader. The comics actually display very well on the high-resolution PSP screen.

Add another pissed off Canadian to the list. Look Sony, if ‘effing’ Microsoft and Apple can bring video and comics to Canada, so can you… so why don’t you?

The comic-reading experience actually works really well. You guys did a great job.

I’d love to see some DC on here. :)

@ everyone having download issues

I was having the download error when I first started downloading the digital comics. This fix worked for me:
Go to Account Settings or your PSP. Then deauthorize your PSP for movies/comics. Then just re-autorize. Simple fix and it worked the first time.

I would like to see the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter (Marvel) comics added, please? I already subscribe to Marvel Comics. Can I use my subscription on the PSP?

Downloaded the 6.20 firmware via wifi…then downloaded some free comics via MediaGo cause i don’t have wifi at my house. When i try to check one out i get a message saying “there is no software available for this application.”

what’s the story? where did i go wrong dudes? i’m not tech savvy btw.

Another Canadian truly disappointed. I was looking forward to the comic store and assumed that because it forces the icon onto my XMB i would be able to have access. Its the video store all over again.

Can Canadian customers at least get some word on whats going on? and not just “it’s complicated.” There are other companies that do movie/music/tv/comic download services in Canada. Does Sony need all the Canadian Sony customers to email the CRTC? Because we will.

I believe that the PlayStation Comics will bring more users to the PSP system now that they won’t have to carry around their precious comic books that are rare and highly valuable. This new program has certainly gotten me back into the PSP and brought me into the world of Comic Books. One thing that they could add to the PSP is the ability to read .PDF files with the reader to allow users to have an aspect of productivity come with their entertainment.

I’m really enjoying the addition of the comics way more than I thought I would. The reader is excellent. The free selection was awesome and got me into a few I’d usually avoid. Greatly anticipating the addition of Manga. Kudos on the great job so far PSN!

You know the biggest issue I see on the blogs lately is how poorly the Canadian public reacts to the updates.

It’s not just the facts of getting licenses, etc but the fact of where the money is most spent and in case those whining didn’t know US > Canada to clear things up. When there’s more of a base then you can expect things to come out at the same time. It’s nothing personal but the big complaints by those that come in is downright disgusting.

Sure you can voice the opinion but at the same time, why not just take it that it’s not out yet and live with that?

It’s great to see the comic service and maybe I’ll give it a whirl sometime. Another great app for the psp that I hope like others have said sees light on the PS3.

To those that are canadian users, try to grow up or don’t post. Simple as that.

December 19th, 3:20 am

Hey will the comics eva be available in Ireland?

Tigerdrsk, why don’t you just go away, we don’t need you to tell us anything.I think that we have just as many rights as you for an answer. I guarentee, if the US was left out and it was just Japan and Canada you would be freaking out for how unfair it was.

We have a legit issue with SONY, and we want an official statement. SONY either treat Candians equaly, or we find other companies that are more than willing to support us SIMPLE AS THAT!!. APPLE AND MICROSOFT for example, are you listening SONY!!!!!.
