Happy Holidays from the PlayStation Blog and Thanks for a Great 2009!

Can you believe we’re capping off a decade in a week? It’s certainly been an amazing 10 years for the PlayStation platform, and 2009 was no exception by any means. Looking back, it’s astonishing how much content hit PS3, PSP, PS2 and PSN this year (Seriously, I just looked at every month this year. The sheer amount of content blows my mind).

Here on the Blog, we certainly couldn’t have made it through ’09 without your support. We had several hugely successful meet-ups this year, including the San Francisco GDC meet-up, the Mama’s Hot Tamale E3 eat-a-thon, a PAX gathering in Seattle and the recent VGA viewing party in Hollywood. We gave away lots of great stuff throughout the year thanks to some addictive PSN titles, and rolled out a flurry of videos featuring the people behind all your favorite games.

And speaking of games, wow. Just wow. I feel like I say this every year, but it’s just getting better and better for us gamers. LocoRoco 2, Flower, Killzone 2, inFAMOUS, Fat Princess, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, Batman Arkham Asylum, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves, God of War Collection…I could go on all day. But I won’t. I don’t want this to be about me spouting off games you know, played and loved. Rather, let’s use this space to find out what your favorite moments from 2009 were in PlayStation Land (list your top three, desert-island, favorite games of the year, perhaps?).

But even more importantly, Jeff and I want to hear all about what you liked or hated (yes, we can take it!) on the PlayStation.Blog this year. We know you want a podcast (working on it). We know you like lots of video coverage. What third-party developers would you like to see more of around here in 2010? Anything else? Please drop your comments here and we promise we’ll read them and take ’em to heart.

So for 2009, that’s a wrap. Again, a huge ‘thank you’ for making the Blog thrive in ’09. You turned out in spades to make our meet-ups a big win. And we’ll continue the trend as we roll in to 2010 with MAG, Heavy Rain, God of War III and beyond. Merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah, happy New Year and/or whatever else you’re celebrating this holiday season, hopefully Mariah Carey-Christmas music free. I’ll leave you with a few of our favorite videos of the year. See you in the zero ten.

  • My favourite time on the PlayStation blog was checking in every Thursday to see what amazing content you guys had in store for us. PlayStation has not once in my life dissapointed me, and I’ll be seeing all of you throughout 2010!

  • my best part of 2009 was Uncharted2!!!!!!!!!

  • Too Everyone at the PS Blog, and to those behind the scenes, which without them, none of this would possible, Thank you. Thank you for all your hard work, dedication, and your eagerness to strive for excellence.
May you and your families all have a very Happy Holiday season, and may the coming New Year fill you all with much happiness, laughter and love.

Now if you could only get the PS3 Technicians to care and know EXACTLY WTF they are doing, and know wtf they are talking about, this year would have ended fine.

  • Well I’m not to wild about twitter or facebook additions to PSB. However this year was a pretty good year for the Blog. Holding the top spot as my number one source to check each day. I loved the coverage of Uncharted 2 and alot of the developer interaction you guys had going on.

My only complaint about PlayStation year wasn’t a lack of games, lack of interaction, or a lack of well…. support of the community…. but rather the lack of significant firmware updates, NO BC for PS2 games, and no Cross Game Chat. It doesn’t help with John Koller kicking us in the balls by telling us we aren’t asking for BC… we simply gave up because we were tired of being told “No”.

  • i love the blog just wish login in was faster

    only complaint i have

    and i love the interviews
so far my favorite one was with the uncharted crew

    keep it up guys/girls

  • Uncharted 2 winning game of the year was the best for ’09…i’m so proud of them, hell it might as well be movie of the year as well lol

  • Great to see the PS3 prospering this holiday season! I work at Gamestop and I can tell you for a fact the PS3 is selling much better than any other game system. We sold out of PS3s yesterday, got more in today, and sold out in a couple hours. We still have 10+ 360’s and a bunch of Wii’s. More people are asking about and are interested in the PS3, compared to the last couple years I see a huge turnaround for Sony in the console wars, and I bet having a PS3 exclusive win GOTY helped greatly; keep the exclusives coming to show everyone else what they can’t have!

  • My favorite moment is John D breaking the blog cause I ended up winning twice. Besides that would be the 3D Dot Game Heroes tweet saying don’t import.

  • love the blog, keep up the good work for your fans!!! Cant wait to see the epic announcements of 2010!!!:D

  • Thanks for everything this year and enjoy the holidays.

Here’s a few things I’m looking forward to/hoping for on the blog next year:

-More avatars from popular games, sooner than later.
-More DLC from big hit games other then LBP :-p (Fat Princess, Uncharted 2, ect.)
-More Dynamic themes. Why, oh why hasn’t the game of the year, big seller Uncharted 2 not received an amazing dynamic theme yet?
-More PSN store sales. Both in the game and video section.
    -Castle Crashers announcement soon. lol

Have a good one. Here’s hoping for a great new year!

  • @morris1129

SCEA is responsible for BOTH countries and run this blog, I paid as much for my PS3 as you and have every right to voice concern when my region is being mistreated.

  • For a while, I knew there was a contest when the server was dead. All that was actually pretty funny.

Put me down for another vote for a meet-up on the west coast! PAX Boston would be great.

  • Sorry, East coast I mean!

  • Great years guy! I don’t always post but I always read. Happy Holidays!

  • I meant year. Not years. PixelJunk Shooter is awesome!

  • Guys, please make sure more PSN content gets posted over on Amazon.com!

  • Loved: Game news, specially announcements of more Japanese games like Yakuza 3 and all the wonderful JRPGs coming out 2010. Yayyy!

Hated: No positive news or feedback about why games without English dubs can’t get published as physical media. Why do the PS3 users get shafted while the Xbox users get real media? C’mon, people. Subtitles are fine for my foreign movies, why can’t I play games that way, too?

  • Oh, and just because I don’t want to end on a negative note (And because the blog cut me off at X characters), a few more positive things.

Thanks for your hard work this year, guys. I love coming to the site daily for news about the happ’s at Sony and the PS3. I’m always happy to hear the latest news from you guys first! :)

Oh, and to add my voice to the chorus… Tales of Vesperia PS3 next year, PLEASE! I mean, I could wait til Summer for it (look at all the RPGs coming out in Q1!!) but… please! PS3 needs some Tales love!

Happy Holidays, and see you next year!

  • The introduction of the EU playstation blog

  • Podcast Beyond! should be the official playstation podcast

  • My main issue about this blog is that it’s not properly formatted for view via mobile device, such as an iPhone. For example, only half of an image is viewable (even when turning the phone to view in landscape mode), and videos are unplayable. It would be great if you guys fixed these issues for 2010.

  • WOw a year gone by so fast. oh uhm let me see I can do my top 5 moments

#5..Sega came and said they releasing games via psp!!

#4. the free Rag Doll kung fu game.. that was epic, and i think the only free game we got this year

#3. Seeing video of dev interviewd right on the blog. epic

#2 actually seeing the blog promote PSN cards.

    “DRUM ROLL”

    1. when the blog posted up a canadain blog for canada.. no im not from there, but its a good thing to do, now the whining and moan will be over there 4 a while lol…

    a few request

1.if a dev company comes to the blog they have to replie at least 3-5 times to the communuty.

    2. there should be a 1 post comment contest ,if we post on 20 blog post ina row being 1st we get alil prize, it can be avator wall paper etc, new prizes each month, if u dont post 1st and post under that u have to restart your streak ,
ty an merry xmas and happy holiday

  • I think many people have left this same comment: that PS blog is one of the sites I check DAILY for the top news on Playstation. It’s the official source and it’s become the real way to communicate between fans and developers or staff of sony :D

I personally got to go to the Blog meetup at GDC. Which was awesome! Got to play Fat Princess b4 it came out. and I even chatted with you Jeff!

Next my mind got BLOWN away by the uncharted 2 premiere launch event in SF. I made it in on the first night with the journalists. I saw the Naughty Dog team, got a pic with Amy Hennig! and lots of free SWAG! It was awesome seeing the media from 1UP and Gamespot and etc. The sites I have been following for YEARS now. It’s really been an awesome year.

Hopefully in the future, the PS team brings more local events to the bay area. because god knowssss i will always make it. Since I’m a busy college student (UC berkeley) I want to and will live out my passion for playstation whenever I get the chance to. :D

    Happy Holidays JEff and everyone!

  • I’m glad that my fellow Canadians and I are finally getting some love in the contest department. Its nice to see you guys actually do care.

  • Great year playstation, Merry christmas to all the PSBlog team and happy new year guys and only 1 things more arrrrr my avatarrrr lol

  • For me, John D coming to the blog hands down.

Whenever I saw he was running a contest, I felt like he was playing as the Joker. Causing chaos just for the fun of it, haha.

Also, when he would say every x post would get a code, I pictured him saying “And here we… GO.” But you know, something actually broke.

‘Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, ow he he ahah, ha ow he hah ahah’

  • It’s been a little over a year since you joined the blog too, right Chris? So… congratulations man! :) I would like to say you have come a long way. I remember watching you interviewing Jenova Chen (I think?) and my first impression was like “he is obviously nervous, looks like a scripted robot when talking. I hope Jeff doesn’t completely overshadow him forever” and it looks like he didn’t after all! :) (even though Jeff really has a lot of charisma going for him!)

Your interaction with the community really showed and I’m glad we have great representatives such as you and Jeff giving us the info and support we need as the loyal PS fanbase.

  • My favorite moment was probably when you guys were interviewing Naughty Dog, right after the announcement of multiplayer in Uncharted 2 and you said “Dark Vincent asked about replayability on the new Uncharted”. But aside from that one, I liked all moments where you gave us the chance to send in questions to devs and other industry-related people about future games, content, etc and weeks later we got to see them answered on video. Jeff talking to a Capcom rep about how LP1 sucked on the PS3 instead of sugarcoating it to make it sound better than it was really expressed how seriously the PSBlog takes its fans.

Over here it really feels like we are more than just consumers “eating” whatever is thrown at us, but rather as if we are ‘part’ of what makes gaming so great these days more than ever (and this is coming from an Atari-era gamer!). It’s a two-way communication channel between the industry and the fans, improving the experience for everyone.

So ‘thank you’, Jeff and Chris, for keeping it up!

  • Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year!

…Oh and if it’s true you guys listen then maybe you guys will start putting PS2 BC back into the PS3. People still want it. ( no matter how much John Koller is in denial about it)

  • you forgot demon souls but yeah it was a great year to be in the playstation family

  • I love the playstation blog and especially the behind the scenes videos. You guys should upload them to the PSN so we can download them on there in HD!!!

  • I think my favorite moment is when Sony Santa Monica announced God of War Collection for PS3 after taking those surveys that they sent via email about what we wanted in a God of War 3 Collector’s Edition. I never thought PS2 games would ever get remastered for the PS3 with trophy support and in HD along with a demo of God of War 3. Another favorite moment would be announcing that the Fallout 3 DLC would be coming to PS3 even though it took a few months for it to arrive on PSN which was really hard to wait for it but in the end it was worth waiting. Another one was when the PSP GO was announced even the PS3 Slim and the price cut to $299.99. Alot of great moments for the Playstation Blog and I can’t wait for even more surprises in 2010. Happy New Year and Merry Christmas Playstation.

  • Whatever happend to the PSBLog podcast idea?

  • My favorite moment was when you posted the news about Uncharted 2 events ending soon.
I was able to get three tickets for me and my buds and we ended up getting free copies of the game and getting autographs from the Amy and the whole Naughty Dog team

Because of you guys, We had one the best nights of the year, thanks alot and keep up the superb work!
P.S. Remember everyone is clammering for cross-chating update =)

  • to everybody on the playstation family not just the blog but everybody who make playstation what it is , to all of you merry christmas and best wishes , to sony keep listening to the fans , to the blog well i think you guys know what my concept about you is , you guys are the best when it comes to playstation news , make pulse longer with more content about the playstation brand as a whole and put the show on tv , i dont like GTTV , the show is garbage im pretty sure Pulse can take it over , we the fans will make it happen for you guys as we did with this blog , i hope sony announce some games that im dying to play next year ( Heavenly Sword 2 , Warhawk sequel , Syphon Filter , Twisted Metal and others ) and most importantly merry christmas to all the people who support playstation ( that we be us the fans ) merry christmas everybody , one last thing psp GO price drop and a bundle , make it happen

  • It was a great year. I am glad you guys are working on getting a podcast because that would be great. The avatars are finally here too so that is good to see. Lets hope you bring game invites and chatting while playing a game soon.

  • Merry Christmas, PlayStation Blog and fellow blog readers! Comment contests rofl blog breaking fun.

  • Is there going to be a update for today. It is a Thursday.

  • Happy Holidays and Merry Xmas to everyone at the PS Blog.

  • Third-party devs I wish I would hear more from

    1. SEGA – They post here from time to time with some good information and whatnot, but they have so many new titles coming out all the time that they just need to up their post count over here for us to always know and remember (Bayonetta, Resonance of Fate, etc..)

    2. Square-Enix – Because they don’t talk about their games anywhere outside of Japan. They really don’t seem to care about the western fanbase (no, NIER is not convincing, and The Last Remnant sucked so bad the PS3 version was canned – talk about FF, KH and your other big projects with us)

    3. Namco Bandai – I’m tired of listening to my friends’ cries over Vesperia PS3 US release. At least give us an answer or a hint. Some of us do care.

Capcom, Atlus, NIS, SEGA and many others thanks for staying in touch with us!

  • I liked all the info on firmware updates and new hardware for my ps3 the best. But the exclusive info on upcoming games and contest are a close second.

Also is there anyway you guys can work the blog into the ps3 or psp? Like a “what’s new” icon specifically for the blog that shows the newest posts and updates from the blog that will open in the browser or steam directly into my xmb. Or put some of the videos and upcoming podcasts on the playstation store.

  • My best PS moment of 2009? AR TONELICO II!! WAITING FOR 2010’s best JRPG right now… (of course it’s NOT FFXIII… ffxiii sucks -_-“) Ar Tonelico III! January will be great!

  • Man, i know it might seem kinda lame, but a digg/reddit upvote/downvote system on comments would really be cool here on the blog… just dont censer the ones that get downed. so as a community we can see some general consensus. seriously.

  • Great year for the PS3 and for the PS Blog! My favorite part was definitely John D’s crazy contests. I managed to win a code for Age of Booty, pretty fun game.

And as for what I’m hoping for 2010, would be cool to try to get DICE(Battlefield developer) to come on more often with exclusive content. I know you’re tight with Gordon van Dyke Jeff, think you could talk to him about that? ;)

  • Got a nice YLOD for christmas tonight (july 07 60gb).

  • How can I have the old xmb back? keep the dynamic themes but i want the FW2.80 xmb it was nicer and cleaner

  • Hey guys, just saw that you won the Open Web Awards! Congratulations on mustering up that support, I guess you can say you’re doing pretty well for what they call a “corporate blog”.

  • Congratulations Sony… for hitting the 30 million mark and just kicking a** all year around!

2009 belongs to to the PS3!

  • But more importantly, I wanna say that with 2009 you guys just blew away my expectations, you have come so far since launch day. You must have set some kind of record for not only the most GOTY awards for an exclusive title but most exclusive games to get GOTY awards, I mean Infamous, Demon’s Souls, Uncharted 2, and Killzone 2 all got goty awards from various websites and publications, that’s extremely impressive.

I own 52 ps3 games not including downloadable titles and 23 of them are ps3 exclusives and I love all of them. I think you guys have even surpassed the ps2s record in terms of delivering a ton of high quality exclusive content.

And perhaps what’s even more impressive is the fact that you can keep this momentum, 2010 is already proving to be another fantastic year with Heavy Rain, ModNation Racers, God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, MAG, White Knight Chronicles, etc. all coming out in 2010

So thank you Sony for being a company who really does care about it’s consumers and understand that the artistry and the creative vision that goes into making video games is key. You’re one of the few devs/console makers that really strives to push games to a new level and to really expand and innovate the gaming experience.

  • I wanted to say more in my comment but I couldnt’ because of the limit lol. I forgot to take out the “But more importantly”
