MAG Beta vs. Final Game

166 7

January 26 is just one day away with MAG arriving on store shelves worldwide tomorrow and throughout the week. Before you delve into your first “official” match between Raven, S.V.E.R., and Valor, though, we wanted to make sure that you knew two things:

  • What the differences between the Beta 5.0 and the final version are
  • How we implemented your feedback from the beta to affect the retail game on day one

First, let’s talk about the differences between the final game and the beta you tried out a few weeks ago – the most obvious of which is the mode and map count. Whereas before, the Beta version of MAG only offered six maps and two modes, the retail version has a full five modes with 15 maps to play. The final game also includes a handy offline training mode, unique armors, new cinematics, art galleries, trophies, and the always-popular Veteran Mode that lets you start all over again with a permanent XP bonus and the ability to switch your faction after hitting the level cap. Of course, graphical and audio improvements are in there too.

MAG Packfront Final!

But our “out of the box” distinctions aren’t all there is to talk about. We’ve also addressed a number of topics that were brought to our attention when you were testing MAG earlier this month, and will deliver them to you the moment you boot MAG up with a small in-game patch (roughly 60-80 MB depending on your region).

Among these upgrades is the oft-asked-for ability to knife an enemy while you’re reloading your weapon — in addition to a pretty significant framerate increase during player-heavy games and noticeable differences in the effectiveness of every weapon and piece of armor. Moreover, we’ve gone back and added all-new light settings for every environment and increased the amount of time you can sprint before getting tired.

For a full catalog of additions, fixes and tweaks, check out our complete list of patch notes on the MAG blog.

  • There are not 15 maps and are only 4 game modes. Calling the training thing a mode and a separate map is joke. Also the map for Suppression is just the Sabotage map with objective C in the middle. I do think the lighting is 100 times improved from the beta. But there was no reason to lie about the map count- there are just 9 maps- admit it.

  • is their any hope of a custome controls patch or add on

Thanks. As much as I love the game it’s really thin on content for the price. Hopefully I can pick it up used soon.

  • Hey i got MAG today and it is great. The weapon custimization is great, gameplay is great, everything is great. But, there is a HUGE problem. My playstation Network connection is very good, but this game keeps kicking me out, signing me off, and if i’m in a match and die, it will keep reseting to 20 seconds till when i respawn. This can last more than 10 miniutes! Now MAG is good, but this problem is forcing me to not play it.

  • Too bad it can’t fix the terrible gameplay. :(

  • @154 Dumbass it never happened to me once and ive been playing the mag beta from day one. with the respawn thing you were probably either choosing your class or respawn point and never accepted.

It could be a DNS issue.

Look up OpenDNS, and configure your router to use the DNS servers than the ones your ISP assigns. Check out portforward.com for configuring your router if you don’t know how to do so.

  • Just bought MAG today and I must admit the game is polished up quite a bit! Good job Zipper! People are also actually playing as teams as well I have noticed. It’s just like SOCOM again, only in FPS view. Nice work!

Love the intro also, with the Zipper logo on the rocket at the end was a nice touch! Just awesome guys!

  • I just have to comment that’s one of the coolest video game boxarts in recent memory.

  • ok so here’s to low down on MAG. It’s slower than cod, and it takes longer to kill the oppersition, respawning takes longer and you don’t kill enemy with one stab of your knife. It’s a lot more involving with massive maps, more realistic and leveling up will take longer, your set with limited weapons and either have to heal yourself or restore your health at ammo point. I was so disappointed with the game I traded it after just three days, remember this is just my opinion but i reccomend renting this title before you buy

  • I’m glad that knifing feature was added. It is very annoying being brought back by a teammate just to be shot back down while my character is trying to reload every time I get up.

  • I never did get a chance to get in on the BETA, missed it… so, bought the game at EB Games with a nice cheap trade in, so not overly disappointed at the amount I spent. My first thoughts were that it was garbage, graphics, gameplay, etc… I haven’t played that much but after playing a little more, I am getting hooked… However, I must agree with others, that having to delete your current character to create another, seems to be a turn off… especially if you have earned any sort of XP points, or upgrades, however it works. However, I will just create another user or 2, one for each faction. And I also agree, that TRAINING, is not a game mode, nor a map! I find the lighting to be low, again, I did not play the BETA, so i am not sure how much it is improved, but I find the graphics and lighting dim, and tough to see opponents, unless looking through a scope. For instance, watching gameplay videos, and playing myself, I watch people just shoot into the wild, trying to aim for where the bullets trails are coming from, instead of an actual body. Just my thoughts, I am going to keep playing, and hopefully find more love for it, but once BC2 comes, I imagine it may get traded.

  • Hey, loving the game, just had a few comments!

    1) In Beta, SVER armors each had access to all the hockey masks. In the final version, the hockey mask selection was segregated to particular armors. Can you guys discuss going back to the way it was in the Beta? I much preferred that.

    2) In the Beta, I noticed that SVER had access to face wraps / masks, but I don’t see them in the final version. Please put them back?

    3) I love the Preorder camo/color schemes, but they only work on the Preorder armor. Can you guys apply the patterns to the other armors, please?

    4) I figure this game is probably going to see some expansions in the future (the game looks good and I just see it getting bigger), so can you put female characters on the To Do list? It’d add some variety and be a nice welcome to the lady players, even if most of them don’t mind playing as a dude.

    Again, loving the game, thanks!

  • Oh, and just throwing this out there, but…

Veteran mode is cool and all, but I think it’d be nice to be able to unlock another 100 load-out credits per unique completion of a level 60 PMC character. (So, Level 60 in each PMC would add a grand total of 300 credits to the loadout gear credit wallet.)

Or something? I’m trying to say it’d be really cool if we could earn a smidge more wiggle room in the equipment section, hahaha.

  • And I am sorry about the third post in a row, but I forgot that I wanted to echo the other sentiments about having to Start Over with the Veteran Mode, instead of being able to have multiple characters.

Wouldn’t it be more accomodating to allow us to Unlock another character spot upon achieving Veteran status in a PMC?

The only thing that is coming to mind for why you might not do this is a concern over team allegiance, but really … you guys have done a lot in the way of preventing jackassy team-killers, and we have the ability to vote people off the squad. I am struggling to find a good reason why we can’t just make a second character or something, anything other than having to start over with a kinda paltry experience modifier bonus.
