As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:

  • The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
  • When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following
message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been
signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
  • When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears
on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install
    trophies. Please exit your game.”
  • When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the
Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date
and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
  • Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the
PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

For the latest status on this situation please continue to check either the PlayStation.Blog or PlayStation.com.

  • @242 Yeah, I’m quite aware I can redownload them. Howevere, the biggest problem is, we have no idea which freakin ones are even corrupted.

You can “fix” plenty of things that break. That doesn’t make them a non-issue at all. So yeah, having crap you pay for all of a sudden go corrupt IS a major issue…

This mentality of “it’s not that bad” is exactly why Sony feels like they have the right to bend it’s users over and do ’em dry! At least lube it up you azzholes!

  • :( BFBC2 is rite around the corner and i cant play it b/c of this and I hope my SASASR trophies and other games dont get erased or otherwise i can consider 3/1/2010 this worst day ever and also my personal life is not making anything better ;(

  • Putting in 500 bucks for the MGS 4 bundle was something I was hesitant to do at first. The fact I can’t play games at the moment or risk the fact of corruption on fact of whatever has happened via the clock.

Something like this should have been addressed far into time prior to the date. If they’re waiting for things to fix, I doubt that would be the case as it would still be one day off due to it.

I’m still really curious as to how something like this would even happen in this day and age. If the system was that well made why would something like this come about?

  • @244

That can’t be true, people earn trophies all the time on their profile without having an active internet connection. They just can’t sync them with the PSN server to display. If that was true everyone would need their PS3 connected to the internet to start disc games.

I’m assuming that’s why people can’t play offline, because it says something like can’t acquire trophy information or something, and kicks you back to the XMB?

  • 245, not 244

  • @244 that’s is not necessarily true either it all depends on what the issue is overall. It could be either a hardware issue or an online issue. The calendar seems like its part of the problem and not the whole problem. I mention harware because of the calendar issue being mentioned. If the calendar is not the only issue involved then yes it could be an online issue also. Since we haven’t been told the full extent of this issue the only thing we can do is speculate. Sorry but I had no intention of coming off that the definitive issue is hardware, just speculating and offering up some other ideas, that’s all.

  • The problem for alot of people is they have/had turned on their systems not aware of this and in doing so may have permanently damged it.Since it’s been this long I’m not sure it’s something as simple as a firmware update.re downloading themes isn’t so much a big deal but the trophy and dlc issues really are.Hopefully by launch at midnight this will be solved or at least they’ll know what it is.

  • yeah sony fix this dont disapoint us now, ah mean God of war come out soon

  • Okay, I totally lied back there, gettin ahead of myself. I apologize. It’s NOT frozen on 6:37, the display time only advances when the system is on.

So would the solution be leave the system on and let the thing advance six hours, or would that just bring my display time to Jan. 1, 2000? Man, that would totally be 7th grade for me. Good times, good times.

I don’t apologize for hatin on the QA team, that still stands. At least Marketing has gotten ridiculously better, Kevin Butler rules

  • If it is fixed by the time The Show comes out all will be well. I haven’t even turned my system on for the past two days just to play it safe. I have a launch [phat] PS3 so I do not really want to mess up my console.

People these things happen we shouldn’t rage at the company that is trying to fix it.

  • Is it okay for me to turn on my Playstation to watch Blu-rays? Because that’s all I did yesterday when this started happening…

  • @257 Turning on the system is not going to wreck things, it’s when you start messing with the games which will in turn affect the save data because then it’s saved to that faulty date. As long as you don’t mess with anything and just turn the system off, it should relatively be fine.

If my save data is going to get messed up I can seriously say sony will be paying me for it with a new ps3 for how many hours I put in on games like dragon age and disgaea 3 respectively and the fact that companies are more than ever prohibiting copying of saves for games. This is a problem in dragon age as now if something does go wrong, I can’t back up data for that game and resident evil 5.

  • Funny how, when everyone was harping on Sony to drop the Blu-ray drive from the PS3, they really should’ve just dropped the clock! (I kid, I love my PS3.)
Honestly, the worst thing about this situation is that Sony is not communicating frequently enough.

  • This is really disappointing. Only makes me further want to switch over to the dark side. *gringes* This summer, I might buy myself a 360. Maybe I’ll wait and see how this new Premium PSN Service works first.

  • Sorry to double post but even if you don’t turn on the system it’s still for us Phat users going to hit that zone of date it doesn’t have because of the clock inside of it. I haven’t logged on mine prior to this for about 2 days and it’s clock hasn’t really stopped so those that don’t, your system will still hit that time period.

Sony has to update the clock so the best advice is to not play any games and keep it off for now.

  • I really wanted to play more Star Ocean today but I don’t want to turn on my phat and risk loosing any trophies or anything.

I’ve not turned on my PS3 since these reports have started surfacing.

  • You know, just as long as my trophies for Uncharted 2 come back, I’ll be happy… I lost every single friggin trophy I earned and worked hard for in that game…

If anybody needs me, I’ll be playing Mass Effect on my new 360 til my favorite system gets fixed…

  • Can anyone confirm that the problem is not with the PSN, but with the PS3’s internal clock?

  • Read the front page as that seems to be the problem because slim users are not affected

  • This whole thing is killing me, I got my copy of BC2 today and I cant even play it :( :(

  • ILOVEPLASTATION3

It seems that the playstation.com site is now down for maintenence. Hopefully all these issues will be fixed at the same time.

  • ILOVEPLASTATION3

Or maybe not…it said there was maintenence, but now the site works…nevermind.

  • So in other words, I’ll have to download the themes that are now showing up as corrupt data and find fixes for the other stuff I’ve download from your store so I can play m games again? Another day off wasted to downloads.

  • @268..its with the clock dude, just now the fourms went down for a minute, says they’ll be right back… this will be fixed in time for sure, my local hardware store didnt have the screwdriver i needed to open my system up to remove battery and place back to reset the internal clock, grrr..oh well wait it out.

  • I just tried to go onto the Playstation forum and I encountered the system unvailable due to maintenence message. Anyone having the same issue? Also I wonder if this is Sony’s way of minimizing the damaging comments being made about this outage? Hopefully an update from Sony is coming.

  • Oh man this is bad… I better get something out of this deal LOL..

  • i love my 80gb

  • This story is even on the front page of CNN. When non-gaming news sites start picking up video game stories, you know something big happened.

  • ILOVEPLASTATION3

lol idk. The site needs maintenance just because it said there was going to be some when there wasn’t. I think Sony has been having one heck of a week. :(

  • FYI….THE BATTERY DISCONNECT/RECONNECT DOES WORK TO FIX THIS PROBLEM!

Just in case anyone is on the fence on trying the motherboard battery removal to fix this problem, I just did it and can confirm that IT DOES WORK. I am online right now and all my games work just fine and all trophies that had disappeared from my consoles list sync’d back up with no issues.

PS..ALL of my themes that were corrupted are also now back how they should be. All is well again :) :) :)

If you guys that have cracked into your PS3 before don’t wanna wait for Sony to get their asses in gear, Again..THIS DOES WORK.

  • i think i will buy and xbox, whatever top mode they have so i have something to fall back on. alot of my friends have multiple systems and i the biased one out in the cold right now, and Heavy Rain is in the mail box along with the resistance 2 collectoers ed with action figure and a blu ray copy of King of New York… :( 1 “King Of New York [Blu-ray]”
    Christopher Walken; Blu-ray; $10.49

    Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC
    1 “Heavy Rain”
    Video Game; $54.96

    Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC

  • Just my luck. I got this whole week off…
If I don’t get my trophies back, I’m going to flip out.

  • @260: no, things like this shouldn’t happen. this kind of crap should get sniffed-out in qa prior to product launches.

that’s the failure of this gen, imo: consoles AND games are shipping with killer bugs and the developers don’t seem to care

  • Thanks for the info.
Interestingly enough, I noticed I couldn’t start FIFA 10 as trophy information could not be registered, but previously, if I got disconnected from the PlayStation network, I could still continue playing my running game.
I don’t really remember if I could play the game without signing on to PSN.

  • I’m getting two new games tomorrow for the PS3 (Battlefield and MLB). This better be fixed by Tuesday afternoon!

Oh, and thanks for the update.

  • I was the only dude to go out and find something to do today it seems . I went with my girl to eat and shop for groceries .I knew this was happening since last night but i woke up today and thought the world end .My friends were calling me and texting me the blogs and there conspiracy sony theories . MY GOD PEOPLE RELAX LMAO..

ps…but please not tomorrow because the GREATEST SPORTS EVER is out and if that happens I will flip out .

  • Jeff will this be a perma fix, because I’d hate to think that I’d have to remove my Battery again in 12 months :-P Anyway 60 gig back on it’s feet after removing battery for 60 seconds. Doubt that will help your engineers at this point.

***DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME KIDDIES***

  • This is NOT new information!

I need to know if my saved game files are safe and if the trophy data that was deleted will be restored.

The problem is not just connecting to the PSN, my PS3 is disconnected and the problems are still happening.

I’ve been trying to call to ask about these concerns and I just get a generic message then it hangs up on me, this isn’t how you treat your fans.

  • Do not use your PS3? Since a lot of the bugs are focused on playing games I would assume watching DVDs & Blu-rays to be harmless, right?

  • I hate how people say “These things happen, etc.” No, actually, these things don’t happen. This is what everyone feared when Y2K was coming around. Massive breakdowns in technologies. Due to shoddy programming, this has now become the biggest system outage in our history of videogames. It will forever tarnish Sony’s reputation, and has affected millions. It IS a big deal no matter how much you try to understate it. Let’s just hope it’s a one time deal that only lasts 24 hours.

I know complaining won’t help things, but I’m just saying most of the complainers are certainly justified, and all of you who are taking the “high ground” and pretending this isn’t a big deal need to open your eyes. It’s not just that we can’t play for at least one day, but it’s the tons of people who could lose trophies, saved data, etc. If none of those things happen, we could be dodging a missle here.

This might not be as severe as the RROD (but then again, what is?), but when the PS4 comes out, I’ll remember this and think twice before dropping another $500-$600 on a Sony console.

  • yea i was getting MLB also but not any more. i had to spend $107 to get my pspgo fixed by sony. i spent like 3 bills in the last week on sony alone.

  • if it is indeed just the clock and all it needs is to be reset (taken out and put back in as said in previous posts), can’t Sony release a small update to do just that and all is good? I don’t get it..

  • @290, ive noticed that bluray also saves dasta so, i dont kno how safe it is, my system has been off since about 6pm est, i dont dare turn it on but i did notice that my wifi light on my ps3 was doing an awful lot of flickering over an hr ago… the ps3 is pluged in to router and my remote play is set up but pspgo is malfuctioning due to cheerios spill (grr) so i have no idea why that was flickering but it stopped. i believe they can access these systems on or off for some reason

  • cmooon I wanna play heavy rain!

  • My playstation just died. I turned it on this morning seeing it was back up then all the sudden it restarted and the red flashing came on now it wont turn on.

  • my ps3 is the 80gb msgs and it was affected yesterday when this started.

is this problem being cause by the ps3’s bios or a driver issue for the system clock with the firmware.

  • @LegendaryPhoenix, Do you really think the same people working on the programming code and networking issues are the same PR people on here talking to us? WRONG! Grace Chen ISN’T tinkering with PS3s as we speak trying to fix it, neither is Rubenstein. Open your eyes man, they can keep customers updated and still have techs working on the problem. That’s what different positions in companies are for.

  • I even saw this story in the stocks app for iphone.. That should prove to be an ill omen

  • Even though people got an answer to the situation they still moan and grown about not playing a game for a day and knowing that they can’t play new release on there favorite system boo hoo… shesh people, see whats out there in the world for once and do something else with your life. like hang with a friend. (if they have physical friends)
