Today we announced that we have purchased Media Molecule, creators of the beloved LittleBigPlanet, making them a wholly owned part of Sony Computer Entertainment. Welcome Molecules!

Michael Denny, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Studios Europe, had this to say about the deal.

The decision was an easy one after meeting five young, talented people with a massive ambition to redefine video games as we know them and create and grow a fantastically talented team at Media Molecule. This was followed by a fantastic exclusive relationship that culminated in the launch of one of the most innovative PlayStation games of recent years. Of course, LittleBigPlanet needs no introduction here, as it was thanks to you that it became a best selling PS3 title when it released in late 2008.

The acquisition will enhance the talent pool within SCE, protect past and current investment and ensure a solid base for future investment. Media Molecule have exciting projects in the pipeline and we’re looking forward to sharing these with you in the not too distant future.

The most important thing is that nothing will change from your perspective; Media Molecule will simply continue to make great games. Welcoming Media Molecule into the PlayStation family will allow us to better support their future titles and ambitions.

  • This article gave me the chills!
I’m really happy for Mm, Sony, and every PlayStation supporter out there! That’s including myself.

Looking forward to a better future for PlayStation gaming.

  • Awesome, SCEE is smart in securing 1st party studios, SCEA and SCEJ, well they’re not as smart.

  • “Media Molecule have exciting projects in the pipeline and we’re looking forward to sharing these with you in the not too distant future.”

This is what I am exciting about.

  • yay awesome…. sony really knows who to keep for first party studios… every first party studio really are the best games the ps3 has to offer or any system really :P

  • Now you can censor all your content together!

  • And this is good news because?

Its worth noting that acquisitions don’t always, if ever, make for better games by smaller developers that get ‘taken under the wing’ of larger publishers.

Take Square-Enix for example… well I could just leave it at that, but look at how their franchises have seen less entries, and less QUALITY entries since they began acquiring smaller developers and publishers.

Lets not all readily celebrate the way big business tactics also mar the gaming industry. Small developers who create brilliant masterpieces should probably stay small developers, and not become part of a corporate structure that demands faster turnaround and controls the creativity of the artists that work for them.

“No we don’t” Sony will say.

    Sure you don’t.

  • Great news. Welcome to the Playstation family Mm! Sony’s first party developers are second to none.

  • sweet! i’d say celebrate by making all LBP add-ons free for a day!

    ehhh?
    *wink**wink*

  • Welcome!!!!

  • @Narcmonkey-
What the hell are you talking about? Sony has been one of the in the industry at just letting their studios do what they do best.

They never try to move first party studios or hire employees for them like Microsoft does, and they’ve always supported new innovative ideas and new IPs even if it means slightly less sales. This is nothing like Square-Enix.

And in case you haven’t noticed, Sony first parties pump out the highest quality games on the PS3. Just check the metacritic scores of first party games.
