I wanted to drop in and deliver some truly exciting news – on behalf of everyone here at Zipper Interactive, I’m pleased to announce that SOCOM 4 is indeed in development and is slated for release exclusively on PlayStation 3 this fall.
Of course, as with any new announcement, what you really want to know are the details: Who’s in your squad? Where have they been deployed? What kind of threat are they up against? Though we’ll be revealing the answers to all these questions and plenty more throughout 2010, we don’t want to leave you completely in the dark, so what we will tell you is that a militant revolutionary has unexpectedly seized control in an important South Asian country. As the Ops Com, your mission is to command an elite five-man squad charged with stopping his aggressive agenda before it’s too late. In only six days, you must lead your team through a hostile jungle and urban environments against an army of well-armed rebel insurgents that completely outnumber you.
If that setup doesn’t whet your appetite enough, you should also be pleased to know that in addition to the SOCOM’s single-player operation, players will also be able to enjoy a 32-person multiplayer mode that boasts more Special Forces units than ever before!
If you crave even more information, then the guys at IGN have you covered with their exclusive first-look preview at what we’ve shown so far. Editor and shooting game fanatic, Ryan Geddes, dropped by our studio earlier in the week to check out SOCOM 4 for himself, so be sure to read the full IGN article to find out what he thinks.
But wait! There’s more! As part of our continued announcement celebration, the folks at GameTrailers TV will air the world premiere trailer for SOCOM 4 tonight at 12:30 am EST/PST. All you have to do is tune in to Spike TV when the time is right and let your eyes and ears do the rest. Don’t miss it!
Oh, and before we let you go, we wanted to send a message to our SOCOM and MAG fans all over the world. First, if you play MAG and wonder what this means for the game’s future, wonder no more – we’re still fully committed to supporting MAG for a long, long time and the addition of another game in our lineup doesn’t change that. Second, it’s been great to hear from SOCOM fanatics located in every corner of the globe as we led into today’s announcement. We’re extremely excited to be attached to this beloved franchise again and knowing that so many people wanted us to return to something that already meant so much to us has been both inspiring and touching – so thank you to all of you who wanted it to happen! We look forward to living up to your expectations.
Nice! Can’t wait! AND releases this year!
Poor, poor MAG.
We\’re still 100% committed to supporting MAG. There\’s some crossover here at the studio, but we have dedicated teams to each.
:)
So this is the big announcement. Certainly explains why everybody was clearancing out Socom 3.
PS3 Just gets Better and Better
meh.
I liked socom better when it was 8 vs 8
Please work hard on this, and I may be tempted to get my first SOCOM game ever.
OOOOHHHHH…..COOL
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Thank the Gods it’s Zipper.
aww oh well aint buying this
wow…
This is Sony surprise? SOCOM4 OMG
Disappointment.
I hope this is nothing like what Slant Six released.
Hope it’s better than the last one.
socom 4, wow this is amazing news, can’t wait for release already
Sorta want, throw some single player in there, make sure the mp isn’t a mess, then we’ll talk.
Check out the IGN preview link in the blog and see what they had to say — I think your concerns are addressed pretty much immediately.
hopefully is going to be good i was kind of disappointed in MAG i thought it would be more like Battlefield 2 but it wasn’t it just kind of sucked.
Knew this was coming but it’s nice to have the official announcement…
How…boring.
I was hoping the surprise would be for another franchise that hasn’t hit PS3 yet.
Nice. Looks great. Thanks for the update, Jeremy. :)
Would much rather be seeing Jak 4.
sorry but i dont care about socom i was expecting legend of dragoon 2 or something like it oh well
A M A Z I N G
………………..
great news
OH. MY. GOD.
ZIPPER, THANK YOU. Please just copy and paste Socom 2, fix the lag/glitches and that’s IT, that’s ALL you need to do and we will love you forever.
If you’re going to completely change everything please make it work, if this turns out to be what i’m hoping this will be my multiplayer game of this entire gen, period.
Slant Six added so much useless crap in Confrontation that nobody wanted or cared about, Sony really dropped the ball with Socom when we’re the most dedicated fanbase. THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO REDEEM THE SOCOM NAME.
Also, I have to wonder if this means Zipper is just ditching MAG.
Absolutely not — check out comment #2\’s reply.
Cool! I mean, I’m not a huge SOCOM fan myself, but I know a few who are. I’m glad to hear, though, a reassurance that MAG support is not being dropped. I do like MAG a lot, so I’m glad that there’s a dedicated team on it. :]
well, for all those people who kept asking and asking and asking about another Socom game by Zipper, can now finally shut up.
WOW pretty nice surprise! i wasn’t expecting this!
@ 27
Read the last paragraph. Reading is fun.
The return of the @!^$)$6 king.
:( thats the reveal?
Boring.
Why would you tease us with a new announcement, only for it to end up being another slow, tactical shooter.
Of all the possibilities, we end up with another Socom?
Sigh.
not so much fan of SOCOM, but good one… you heard the FANS
Why does it look so bad? Compared to Uncharted, HR, GOW3, KZ2, etc, etc this looks like crap judging by these screens.
Yay!!! I hope this game is badass, hopefully with elements from Socom II, I miss it so much. I love MAG but I’m so excited for this now, can’t wait!
Zipper please look at Confrontation as an incentive for making this Socom good.
But who knows, maybe it ends up being good.
I’;m really hoping this will be a great game, please polish it the max and deliver a experience like you have with Socom 1,2,& 3. They were amazing online games and this one needs to be on the same level.
So i guess you’re just hoping everyone has forgotten the horrible, horrible mess that was and STILL IS Slant 6’s SOCOM: Confrontation?
How do you (Sony and Zipper) plan to entice me to come back to this series after being burned so badly?
Is this the big announcement?
I really hope this is better than SOCOM 3, because that was a catastrophic letdown.
Ok, just read the part about single player, Zipper you have my attention, don’t blow this.
YES! YES! YES!
It’s from Zipper, surly it will be AMAZING. Thanks Sony, thanks Zipper <3
Say goodbye to crappy SOCOM: Confrontation! Woot.
Not a fan myself, but I know some people who are going to go into diabetic comas from the sweetness of this announcement. (Hopefully they’ll wake up in time for the game.)
Those certainly are some impressive screenshots.
BEST DAY EVER! I LOVE YOU ZIPPER!
We all did know it was coming. :P
@ 31
Yes they say that, but creating a full fledged SOCOM on a system as hard to develop for as the PS3, while simultaneously supporting MAG with significant updates isn’t going to be easy. And Zipper isn’t a particularly huge developer like say, Valve.
We have teams dedicated to both. Won\’t be an issue.
(Plus, we didn\’t just start this yesterday, we\’ve been working on it for awhile)
The first socom I played was Confrontation, I liked it. So I cant wait to see what this new one brings to the table.
