SOCOM 4: It’s Official!

I wanted to drop in and deliver some truly exciting news – on behalf of everyone here at Zipper Interactive, I’m pleased to announce that SOCOM 4 is indeed in development and is slated for release exclusively on PlayStation 3 this fall.

SOCOM 4 screenshot Explosion

Of course, as with any new announcement, what you really want to know are the details: Who’s in your squad? Where have they been deployed? What kind of threat are they up against? Though we’ll be revealing the answers to all these questions and plenty more throughout 2010, we don’t want to leave you completely in the dark, so what we will tell you is that a militant revolutionary has unexpectedly seized control in an important South Asian country. As the Ops Com, your mission is to command an elite five-man squad charged with stopping his aggressive agenda before it’s too late. In only six days, you must lead your team through a hostile jungle and urban environments against an army of well-armed rebel insurgents that completely outnumber you.

If that setup doesn’t whet your appetite enough, you should also be pleased to know that in addition to the SOCOM’s single-player operation, players will also be able to enjoy a 32-person multiplayer mode that boasts more Special Forces units than ever before!

If you crave even more information, then the guys at IGN have you covered with their exclusive first-look preview at what we’ve shown so far. Editor and shooting game fanatic, Ryan Geddes, dropped by our studio earlier in the week to check out SOCOM 4 for himself, so be sure to read the full IGN article to find out what he thinks.

But wait! There’s more! As part of our continued announcement celebration, the folks at GameTrailers TV will air the world premiere trailer for SOCOM 4 tonight at 12:30 am EST/PST. All you have to do is tune in to Spike TV when the time is right and let your eyes and ears do the rest. Don’t miss it!

Oh, and before we let you go, we wanted to send a message to our SOCOM and MAG fans all over the world. First, if you play MAG and wonder what this means for the game’s future, wonder no more – we’re still fully committed to supporting MAG for a long, long time and the addition of another game in our lineup doesn’t change that. Second, it’s been great to hear from SOCOM fanatics located in every corner of the globe as we led into today’s announcement. We’re extremely excited to be attached to this beloved franchise again and knowing that so many people wanted us to return to something that already meant so much to us has been both inspiring and touching – so thank you to all of you who wanted it to happen! We look forward to living up to your expectations.

  • After Confrontation my only hope to play a real next-gen Socom game was for Zipper to take the reigns. After the initial Socom 4 announcement I am seeing the Zipper that gave us S3 and didn’t listen or learn from anything we tried to tell them.

Fact: No Socom that focuses on 32 player games and map sizes has ever come close to the sales and fun of the first two with the classic 16 player sized maps. 32 player maps promotes way too much camping and sniping and completely loses the balance of the first two games, loses the adrenaline rush, and makes for a boring online experience.

Fact: People who liked the single player were hoping for a return of the mission based single player with the commands and map layout.Just new missions with the next gen graphics is what we wanted. This sounds like a very watered down single player style that most other shooters now use.Trying to “evolve” Socom is whats been killing it for the last three iterations. If i led the project direction i could easily outsell the past three games and this future release combined.

  • Seems like Zipper doesn’t know a darn thing about presentation.

I mean just look at MAG and BFBC2, BC2 draws more people in because of the slick graphics/presentation. MAG has subpar graphics and cheesy rock music. Get out of the early Ps2 era Zipper or ship out of sony altogether,

  • awwwww i wanted it to be the getaway 3!!!!

well as long as this is better than confrontation

  • too late

Confrontation left the Socom franchise in shambles

Its going to be hard to convince people to play Socom again, most people don’t bother looking at who developed the game

Its like Call of Duty franchise you have two different developers working on it but most people just buy it because it says Call of Duty

Socom 4…rename it because its tarnished

  • WOW! You guys JUST MADE MY DAY!! I LOVE MAG, and I cannot wait for you guys to bring us a new decent SOCOM. Slant Six just can’t handle the job guys…. Only Zipper can.

So thank GOD you guys are making the new Socom! Make it kick ass, and give us our Socom 2 maps please! We don’t want to stop playing Socom II until a new Socom comes out that actually replaces it. Confrontation simply does not.

  • Mr.Dunham, for how long has Socom 4 been in development?

  • So is it going to be same online as confrontation are something totally new?

  • This is great news I don’t know what some of these other people are talking about. Like some of the others are saying make it fun like socom 2 and please leave out the vehicles. Vehicles ruin the game! Looking forward to hearing more news.

  • Zipper
Please give us a U.S NAVY SEALs GAME
    and not PMC’s.
Im already worried about the PMC look of the squad, it kinda killed abit of the hype to be honest but im still holding out hope.

I just hope that’s not the end of the story. I hope they get to look more Military than Blackwater at some point

  • dam i was hoping for syphon filter 5 :(
either theres going to be a mass of delays or were going to be in for one hell of a fall this year.
i mean how many ps3 exclusives let alone multiplatform released are due out in that time frame?
    agent.
    GT5.
    LA Noire.
    FFXIV
    socom 4.
    mod nation racers.
and thats not counting the multiplatform games.
come on sony disperse your games properly, i think its safe to say no one has time to play 6 games in the space of say 2 months.
    let alone the cash.

  • Hey Jeremy I’ve been reading all the comments that you have responded to, to make sure I dont ask a question that has already been answered.

Well I’ve got all my answers answered. I just have to say, considering I’ve read a lot of comments that disliked vehicles or Socom 3/CA. Know that I have played Socom 1 and Socom 2, but my favorite title was indeed Socom 3 and Combined Assault. I loved the vehicles, I loved Convoy, and online co-op in Combined Assault. Just take into consideration that you have fans of all series.

Thank you Zipper, MAG was insane! Glad Socom’s back in the right hands.

P.S. Hmmm all it may be missing is offline Split Screen…

  • Thank god Zipper are back on socom s6 made a real mess of it and after having played MAG which imo is very immpressive i really am looking forward to Zipper making a proper socom game cant wait.

  • Awesome!

  • First off Jeremy. Thank you. This is awesome news!!!

Though, I URGE you to listen to the fanbase and avoid the mistakes of Confrontation. Look back at SOCOM 2 and build from there. I’m not talking about graphics. I mean the “core” foundations of what made that game work and SOCOM 3/Confrontation fail.

    1) Give us more than 7 maps. This is very important as it gives life to the game. don’t forget to add alot of the old favorites while adding some new ones. Make sure they’re not too large. DO NOT make the mistake of SOCOM 3 and add vehicles. Focus on the close-quarters battles of Socom 2 and even Confrontation.

    2) THE OLD LOBBY SYSTEM. BRING IT BACK!! This is also very important. SOCOM had the best lobby system in any game ever. No stupid quick matching crap. At any given time you could scroll through the current rooms as well as see who’s currently online through the players list and what room they’re in.

    3) Tiebreaker rounds/Team switching. Give us back tiebreaker rounds and remove the dumbest idea in the history of online games -team switching.

Please don’t screw this up. Confrontation was the biggest failure and made alot of SOCOM fans very, very angry.

  • Please fix it to where people don’t Camp and hide all match. I’m a Socom player since PS2 and play MAG now. I would Love to see something done to change the mentality of Socom players of hiding in the bushes just because our team is winning a match by 1 kill or up 1 game. So that means we hide for the next 10 minutes?

  • i can not see this game been any good mag well and truly sucks i can not see me ever putting that piece of garbage in my console again.

  • Yes I knew it will come out (SOCOM 4). I wish the story is long and I know it’s about terrorism I wish the online is good and LAG free like MAG, BTW when is the official release date I know it’s FALL 2010.

  • My life is now complete thank you zipper!!!

  • Sweet! If looks could kill Wow this kills MW2 with the graphics & detail..I can not wait till it comes out this Fall 2010 COD your days are numbered!..Unless things change in MW-2 I’m through with it with all the hacking & cheating yeah you can see why I’m quite disappointed with MW-2..I rather pay a monthly fee then have to deal with people cheating and hacking! And get this steal your personal information!..So lets have it CHARGE NETWORK!

  • Thank you SONY for bringing this franchise to a GOOD and REAL developer! ZIPPER YOU ROCK!

After what /6 did I had lost all faith in Socom.

Here’s to hoping this game does the franchise JUSTICE on such a great system like the PS3!

  • WWOOWW MAN THATS AWESOME IVE PLAYED THIS GAME SINCE THE FIRST AND LOVE EVERYONE IVE GOT CONFRONTATION NOW AND LOVE IT THE ONLY THING IS THAT I WISH THERE WAS A MAP PACK FOR THE OLD SOCOM MAPS YOU KNOW LIKE HARVESTER, KILLING FIELDS, JUST THE OLDIES..

  • Welcome back gentlemen,
    We’ve been waiting for you.

Suggestion: Please crush the enemy elements hacking the old versions of the game.

I’m sure you know this, but, even with them ruining games by booting the room or cheating(auto-RPG’s anyone?) those games are still fun enough to go back to; however, they really anger most players because there is nothing WE can do about it. Yes, the PS3 system pretty much kills their annoyances, but those XboX’ers keep coming back to the PS2 version just to piss people off.

Please start banning these clowns by MAC address…its really the only way they’ll stop.(For instance: KCUF.REHTOM… is now
_-72aZo72-_ and regularly laughs about how he can ‘knife’ ppl, and does it too.)

In any case, welcome back, we’re happy but will reserve judgement for when actually gameplay is shown…

Good luck, and thanks again for returning.

  • i was a bit expecting it to be Sony confirmation on TwistedMetal, or something that could be obvious.
But that was really a surprise as i wasn’t expecting it!

  • Zipper … Zipper … I LOVE YOU ! Since Socom 1 !

An other fan from France ! =)

But, like every fans all around the world, I expect that this Socom 4, is a Socom 2 “tuned”.
Keep the Socom 2 gameplay, better graphics, and that’s all !

    Can’t wait ! =)

  • You have no freakin’ idea what a great day this is!!! Been a Socom junkie from day 1. I was extremely upset when Zipper let Slant 6 (great Mopar motor, absolutely horrible developers) take the reigns on a game that, quite possibly, had the biggest fan-base ever. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get back to the basics. K.I.S.S- Keep It Simple Stupid, /6 must have missed the memo. Love the single player, please add co-op like Combined Assault but the basics of Socom 2. LOVE IT!!!

  • An additional comment:

DON’T fix the game to eliminate camping.

I’m not sure about anyone else, but, I consider this game about as close to a sim as it can get…if ppl want to camp, so be it. That’s how it is for real…and that’s how I want to play. Sure it sucks…but this isn’t Mario Bros…its SOCOM.

Please DO make either the environment or vehicles more interactive: IE, you can jump on them or get in them and drive them.

    That’s all for now!…

  • Finally a game me and my friends can actually enjoy again…I thought slat six’s so called socom, was going to be that game, but that game was just a huge disappointment… So THANK you Zipper for coming back to an awesome series of games. I personally cant thank you enough…
Oh and for all you haters out there, quite crying about a great game, (that slant six screwed up) now that Zipper is back in the saddle, we can accept a great game.

I’ve owned every socom ever made, and I’m happy to say I will gladly own this one, in a heart beat..

  • Looking forward to it.

  • Jeremy, I was on the MW2 tip and I looked up MAG soooo much before purchasing, and man what a game, this announcement is kinda scary to those who are really digging MAG, only cause the obvious and players ditching it and online play sucking FORCING us to dislike it since theres no single player action. please, now would be a good time for those who LOVE MAG to drop some type of news as to what to expect with MAG, maybe not to take attention away from the SOCOM announcement (congrats to those waiting for that) but to just make me please feel better… more maps, DLC…anything… :-(

  • can’t wait

  • WHY DO THEY LOOK LIKE MERCENARIES ZIPPER.
GIVE US THE CLASSIC US NAVY SEALS LOOK.

I DONT WANT TO FEEL LIKE IM PLAYING A PMC SHOOTER

  • WoooT!!! can’t wait!! untill release day!! xD!

  • Please, please, please tell me that there will be co-op in SOCOM 4.

How awesome would it be to have a friend control Bravo team or you control Bravo team and a friend controls the other Alpha member.

You could have two human controlled players, either one on each seal team or two on the same team,
    or even…
four human controlled players in co-op.

This guys says it all. He posted on the teaser page.

    ACDarkKnight | March 5th, 2010 at 7:08 am
I know you guys aren’t talking about multiplayer yet but if the game isn’t coop, its almost a no buy for me. After the most recent Socom PSP game had it, I see no reason why this game cannot. I really am excited at the possiblities of this game and I really want it to live up to what I think you guys have planned. You all didn’t let me down with MAG so I have faith. PS Thanks for being so active on the blog Jeremy, its really cool to see and hear from a great developer like Zipper so much!

I’m sure there are a lot of people that are looking forward to co-op in SOCOM 4. Please let there be co-op.

  • I completely agree with the co-op, it would be sweet if the players could have that option for a 2-4 co-op online, and have it just like single player, only difference you can roll with your friends.

  • WE WANT SEALS AND TERRORISTS PERIOD.

    No Mercenaries,
    No Commando’s B.S

    Just SEALs and Terrorists.
    Thank you

  • amm Guys….i think at this phase in the PS3 life cycle…with the kind of momentum its gaining….announcements like these could come as a bit of a “let downer”…

    please see Referenced article:

Hoping PS3 has a long and properous life cycle!

  • Mag is absolute bull, socom is way better and I can’t wait for 4. Well done Zipper!

  • It will be the same old same old. lag lag lag rank ups glitching infrequent patches. one problem after another. Ive played every socom and have slowly fell out of love with it b/c of slant six AND zippers own actions…or lack there of.

  • @#564 Shadow_Dancer

You are right on point! The fear of a lot of die hard Socom fans (and there are a lot of us) including myself is that Zipper might be trying too hard to lure new Socom fans in (because of the Confrontation fail) & try to do too many things different. Like the old saying goes “if its not broke, don’t fix it”. I can only hope that Zipper/Jeremy listen & respond back to the Socom Community. Socom 2’s mechanics were the best I’ve played and I’m comparing that to the Modern Warfare’s, Halo’s & Killzone’s of today!

  • i think zipper should just remake socom 2 for the PlayStation 3 with just updated graphics and all the glitches patched up. I believe they would make a good profit because that was possibly the must successful socom game. If they want to please the adult gamers, maybe they should consider moving to xbox to make a better profit. I know its based from PlayStation, but maybe its time for a change.

  • I appreciate the return of SOCOM, but I will have to dissagree with the direction of the title. Spectre has been beheaded by some haji I assume since he and his team are not mentioned. And the Navy Seal Op realism is, well gone.

Though I wasn’t a SEAL I did serve as army infantry and SOCOM caught a respectively real/fantasy portion of team based operations.

Confrontation revealed were SOCOM is now graphics wise, but the former characters will be missed. R.I.P SOCOM 1,2 & 3 and welcome “SOCOM reboot?”.

Lets hope that the direction that we as a SOCOM team in general don’t stray from the roots. I’m waiting for a copy to give a fair judgement, but from the looks of the preview, well I’m stuck on the past I guess.

But I will say thank you Zipper, welcome home.

  • I cant wait. Zipper, you guys are the best. MAG was really good, but what I wanted was another Socom game, and here I am, reading about a new Socom game coming out this year.I am just glad Slanted Six isnt developing it. Their Socom was good, but after 1 year of patching. This is on my list to buy now. Nice of you guys to return to Socom again, and theres single player too ! cant wait !

  • PLLLLEEEEEAAASSSEEE make it the exact same as socom 2. or re-release socom 2 the exact same way for ps3. would it be possible to sell s2 on ps3 for like 40 dollars and just have a newer server host the game?..but please have No vehicles, make sniping not extremely easy, no button to run faster, doesn’t take forever to stand up, throw grenades further, 8v8 is plenty, no 16v16 or 92v92. A fast moving game that comes down to shooting skill and strategy would be awesome.

I totally agree about the gameplay mechanics. THE BEST!

  • OrlandoStrongman

Except we don’t need a run button.

  • Thank god zipper is back slant six really sucks lol I’m so glad zipper is back. Slant six should of never made a socom only zipper

  • Zipper thank you for making a new Socom game. Ive been playing Socom since the release of Socom 1. Socom 1 and 2 were most the enjoyable games I have ever played. I did not however enjoy Socom 3 and Confrontation. Despite the past few sequal not living up to the Socom name im still longing for the return of the classic style of Socom 2. Please make the multiplayer 8v8 small maps…much like Socom 2. Stick to the same formula that made the first 2 games great…they didnt much change because they almost perfect as is. Thanks i hope much success even if you guys massacre the game again lol

  • Jeremy,

I noticed there will be a single player campaign along with multiplayer online, but will there be a co-op campaign mode? I also noticed the name is just Socom 4. Are the SEALS done and it’s PMC now? PLEASE don’t say it is. There are WAAAAY too many PMC shooters out there. I love MAG and the faction, PMC style team but please let Socom be Socom. Are there going to be any maps for sniping? Basically, Vigilance is the best sniper map ever! Had the ditch in the middle as a divider, tons of places to hide and was just big enough to make long shots feel oh so good. Please stick to the close feel that has been Socom. Since Socom CA, there has not been a game that has that “intimate” feel to it. I loved playing an 8v8 suppression and, being one of the last alive…man, you’re heart is racing, you’re on edge and BAM! That’s was we miss. Please Please Please bring it back!!!

People, please remember that Zipper did not make Socom Constipation. That was a Slant 6 failure. Do not compare Confrontation to any other Socom. If you simply will not buy the game because Confrontation is a failure, then you need to be donkey punched. I will never buy another Slant 6 product.

    SOCOM 4 EVER!!!

  • Is he holding Heckler & Koch HK417? This game should be great, it’s great to see the original creators working on it.

  • The weapons in the shots are as fallows:

The Chick has a UMP45 with silencer and Red dot

The black dude has a SCAR 11H with ACOG sight (7.62mm NATO version)

The white guy has an M4 with red dot sight, and an MP5

The guy in the back of the last shot has a M249

I hope that clears things up all in all the Navy Seals do indeed use all of these weapons. About time SOCOM got the loadouts right, the Navy Seals dont use AK-47s, or P90s/F2000s as much as the SOCOM fans would like to think they do. Navy Seals only get AKs by dropping their guns and picking one up off a dead man they killed.
