I wanted to drop in and deliver some truly exciting news – on behalf of everyone here at Zipper Interactive, I’m pleased to announce that SOCOM 4 is indeed in development and is slated for release exclusively on PlayStation 3 this fall.

Of course, as with any new announcement, what you really want to know are the details: Who’s in your squad? Where have they been deployed? What kind of threat are they up against? Though we’ll be revealing the answers to all these questions and plenty more throughout 2010, we don’t want to leave you completely in the dark, so what we will tell you is that a militant revolutionary has unexpectedly seized control in an important South Asian country. As the Ops Com, your mission is to command an elite five-man squad charged with stopping his aggressive agenda before it’s too late. In only six days, you must lead your team through a hostile jungle and urban environments against an army of well-armed rebel insurgents that completely outnumber you.

If that setup doesn’t whet your appetite enough, you should also be pleased to know that in addition to the SOCOM’s single-player operation, players will also be able to enjoy a 32-person multiplayer mode that boasts more Special Forces units than ever before!

If you crave even more information, then the guys at IGN have you covered with their exclusive first-look preview at what we’ve shown so far. Editor and shooting game fanatic, Ryan Geddes, dropped by our studio earlier in the week to check out SOCOM 4 for himself, so be sure to read the full IGN article to find out what he thinks.

But wait! There’s more! As part of our continued announcement celebration, the folks at GameTrailers TV will air the world premiere trailer for SOCOM 4 tonight at 12:30 am EST/PST. All you have to do is tune in to Spike TV when the time is right and let your eyes and ears do the rest. Don’t miss it!

Oh, and before we let you go, we wanted to send a message to our SOCOM and MAG fans all over the world. First, if you play MAG and wonder what this means for the game’s future, wonder no more – we’re still fully committed to supporting MAG for a long, long time and the addition of another game in our lineup doesn’t change that. Second, it’s been great to hear from SOCOM fanatics located in every corner of the globe as we led into today’s announcement. We’re extremely excited to be attached to this beloved franchise again and knowing that so many people wanted us to return to something that already meant so much to us has been both inspiring and touching – so thank you to all of you who wanted it to happen! We look forward to living up to your expectations.

  • I wasn’t into MAG so hope i like this one better.

  • Socom is Dead. Hearing 32 vs 32 shows that Zipper clearly hasn’t learned from the mistakes that killed the franchise. I will never, I mean NEVER buy a game that Seth Luisi has worked on. SONY do the right thing and kill this game now.

  • The last Socom I played was the 3rd one and heard lots of things that pushed me away from playing it on PS3, but I love MAG and can’t wait to see the trailer tonight on GTTV

    PS3 RULES!!!!

  • As an avid MUltiplayer, please, please listen to the comments on SOCOM 3. Learn from them and make 4 leaps and bounds better. I was very disappointed with the latest SOCOM.

  • very good news. looking forward to the new SOCOM. especially since MW2 will likely be the last one of those. keep up the good work with exclusives.

Globox nothing looks as good as those games do. plus this is an announcement…not a final product. relax man i’m sure they’ll be just fine once the game is ready for launch.

  • this is an AWESOME ANNOUNCEMENT. IF YOU DONT LIKE SOCOM YOU NEED TO GET HIP THIS GAME PIONEERED ONLINE MULTIPLAYER FOR SONY AND WAS THE FLAGSHIP TITLE FOR YEARS FOR ONLINE USERS. DO YOUR RESEARCH TERDS THIS IS FAR FROM A FAIL BY SONY!!

YES I LOVE CAPITALS BECAUSE IM LIKE A LIL BOY ON XMAS RIGHT NOW LLS

  • So this is a single player game like the old SOCOMS were? with added multiplayer? IS that correct? I loved the old single player campaign of the original SOCOMS. . . this could be epic

  • Very excited for this. Can you make the trophies a bit easier this time though lol?

  • Sweet, finally. I can’t wait. Glad to hear you guys making another Socom that has a campaign and multiplayer.

Is there going to be co-op through single-player campaign though? Socom gave love to the psp with co-op and co-op on some of the PS2 versions, but no love for co-op on PS3 so far from this series. Granted only been one Socom game so far for ps3.

If it has 4 player co-op online through the single-player campaign, my friends and I are sold. We have been chomping at the bit for a co-op campaign shooter.

Either way, I am glad to hear you are making another one.

  • @QDub

learn to read, it’s 32 player mp not 32v32 mp which would be 64player

yea it’s not 16 player but it will have that mode, yes seth does have an annoying tendancy to ruin things, but i’m still really hyped for this

  • No matter how many times you deny you will keep MAG supported, i won’t believe it until i see it.

  • Awesome news. I wonder if they are using Killzone 2 tech.

@59 Maybe try to read the entire post before you comment. He clearly states that MAG WILL BE SUPPORTED FOR A LONG LONG TIME along with Socom 4.

  • One question: From the IGN article, it says that the squad consists of “Ops Commander”, two Westerners, and two Korean agents. I’ve also noticed that the title is just “Socom 4”. Are the US Navy Seals out?

  • Jermey, Are you going to be our Socom 4 community manager? If so, that’s great news and on behalf of the socom community we welcome you and look forward with working with you. You are a real class act and based on your work with MAG S4 information and feedback should be flowing freely between us and Zipper.

    This news made my week!!

    Talk to you soon,
    LazyTime
    (SoS) SONSofSOCOM

    • Thanks. And yes, I will be. I represent all Zipper games. :)

I will be adding to my team, though, so you\’ll start seeing some additional folks soon.

  • Ive read your comments, I can promise MAG will die very soon….You guys really bum me out with this junk….

I understand you want to make money but could you have waited a couple more months before announcing that your going to kill MAG? (Again I see you say you won’t kill MAG but come on….tell the truth, it doesnt make good fiscal sense to support a game that WILL NOT sell as well as SOCOM 4. That is a bummer) All that being said….Im truely sad about your decisions.

  • CAN NOT WAIT!

Brilliant news! Zipper is now officially my favourite developer of 2010!

MAG rocks. SOCOM 4 will rock.

  • i’m bummed out because i was expecting a new rpg or something along the lines.oh well,i guess its a good time for FPS fans :)

  • A lot of negativity towards MAG on here.

  • THANK YOU ZIPPER!!!

Question if the devs would care to reply, any old maps from the series making a comeback for online? Ex: Crossroads, Fishhook, Rats Nest, Frostfire, Sujo, Harvester, Citadel, Killing Fields and so on?

THANK YOU AGAIN ZIPPER, YOU MADE MY DAY!!!

  • JEREMY,

Just a word of advice. Please, simplify the controls for SOCOM 4. That is one of the main faults in all the SOCOMs, unnecessary difficult control schemes.

  • Alright Jeremy, you have my attention.

Two seperate dedicated to each team sounds alright. The only SOCOM I’ve played was Fireteam Bravo on PSP, and I loved it. The only reason I didn’t get Confrontation was because of the lack of a single player campaign. Hopefully SOCOM 4 delivers!

  • Also, this kind of spoiled the GameTrailers TV announcement.

  • Looks like females will be quite happy with this new Socom… ——> http://ps3.ign.com/dor/objects/19332/socom-iv-us-navy-seals/images/tba-socom-iv-us-navy-seals-20100304094812082.html Female characters heading to Socom??

  • Twisted metal 5!!…
    No…Jak and Dexter 4!!!!!
    ….No……..hang on….Killzone 3!!!!….
    no….Warhawk 2?………no.

    Sony:SOCOM 4 YAY!!!!
    Me:….umm…yeah cool I guess.

  • YES baby Zipper is BACK! We got faith in you zipper bring your A+++ Developing.

  • Them’s some SHARP looking character models right there. Dayumn!

  • bleh

  • Please Jeff, please please please please please please please please PAHLEEEZZZ!!!! tell them that it is not SOCOM without USER CREATED RANKED ROOMS

  • Please don’t make it like the rest of the SOCOM series. Seemed like since Socom 1 it took more and more bullets to kill somone. Even with /6 version, it just takes more. Go back in time and make it realistic. If i shoot a guy with no armor in the chest hes going to be hurting or dead. Two shots to the chest will kill you.

    Thank you!

  • I am very happy to hear this announcement.
I just wish they went back and focused on 16 player battles (max) like in SOCOM 1 and ditch the 32p modes

    Great new non the less

    Thank you

  • will the graphics be better then mag and will we be able to customize the controls how we want.

  • OMG yes!

  • THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU SONY AND ZIPPER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You don’t even know how much this means to us hardcore socom fans. Confrontation was a disgrace to the franchise and it’s time to bring Socom back to glory.

BTW, please…no vehicles in multiplayer mode…PLEASE. Keep focus on NON-respawn gameplay. THANKS AGAIN!

  • oh ya and USER-CREATED RANKED ROOMS!!!!!!!!!! this is essential.

  • 4 player split-screen off-line mode please? ;P

  • I don’t usually comment but this is one of the best news I’ve heard in a while. Confrontation seemed lackluster and out of place, but with Zipper back in command I know it will be a quality game I’ve come to expect. Heres to hoping its as great as 2 and 3!

  • HOLY F**K! I’m VERY excited. :DDDDDD

( So will one certain friend of mine … ) :)

  • OHHHH YEAHH!!!

not crazy about the fact that there is still a 32P mode. I also wish it was 16P max. Less players, better team work, less chance for lag, and more details on screen

But I can’t wait to hear more

    SPARDA

  • All die hards hit this BLOG SO SONY KNOWS HOW MUCH WE LOVE OUR BELOVED FRANCHISE!!! SOCOM FOR LIFE!!!!

  • Co-op????

  • Do us all a favour and:

    1. Hire some next-gen graphic artists/modellers/animators. The visuals in MAG are terrible. And SOCOM 3 was an embarrassment.

    2. Add 4-player splitscreen offline. Or better year, 4-player splitscreen with the option to go online with those 4-players (as in Warhawk). The PS3 desperately needs a game that can be fun at parties.

  • Oh..and please DO NOT ADD vehicles!!!

  • Socom 2 is what got me into playing online games. I’ve enjoyed a few since but still haven’t found anything that fit me like Socom 2.

The other Socom on PS3 was a joke and I didn’t even bother with it after playing the beta. MAG seems fun, I have yet to buy it though thanks to little free time an online shooter needs.

Just wanted to say thanks and I hope Socom 4 brings back what made me fall in love with online shooters to begin with!

PS: For MAG I love CITY levels…like big buildings you can climb into the 3-4 floor. If the game had more of that I’d probably make time :)

  • This is great news and since I adore MAG I am very pleased to hear you will continue to support it as well… my biggest potential nightmare when I heard you were doing a new SOCOM was that you would ditch MAG for SOCOM just to please the vocal minority that think only SOCOM matters… and I had vsions of DLC being cancelled for MAG because of it… because the only thing that would tear me away from MAG is if no new maps came… its the only real problem with PMC loyalty is you basically see one map all night long… In regards to Socom Im glad its back where it belongs… Ive never been soo dissapointed than by the last Socom game. None of the stuff on the back of the box worked on release, and only worke half arsd when they finally fixed it… I traded it in day after release and just kept the mic, and rebought it used months later when it was supposedly fixed… then traded it in again a short time later… PS, its stupid to have to have adobe flash player to sign into Mag forums.. I browse net on my pho at work when were not busy, dont surf at home on PC

  • Now maybe you guys can announce some MAG DLC! (I’ve got $12 waiting!) :D

This is great news though! I never had a chance to try out a SOCOM game other than Confrontation, and you guys are aware what most people think about that. So I’ll be buying this for sure!

  • Was hoping for Twisted Metal.
PS3 will be the first Sony platform without one near launch. It’s been so long I guess we won’t have one. It’s like walking outside and feeling like you left something at home.. :(

  • Sounds great, looks great. IGN article was solid. But will there be voice commands? That was something that I always loved about SOCOM, will there be voice commands?

  • another socom… dang…just quit…i got bored of socom back at number 2 why couldnt it have been crash or something that hasnt been back for a while

  • i still love my ps3 tho :D
