PS3 Firmware (v3.21) Update

7,437 0

The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.

In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.

Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;

  • Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
  • Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
  • Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
  • Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later

For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

  • @ Flukester

I’m in IT and run a VM farm at home and use Red Hat Enterprise and Fedora. As well as Windows Server 2003 boxes to maintain DNS and as a DC for my personal network. I bought my PS3 to game and play Blu-Ray movies with not run something I can spin a VM up in 20 minutes.

  • @darini or any other naysayers
honestly i shouldn’t have to keep repeating this. at what point am i wrong when a lawyer with the nys attorney generals office who actually has experience in this matter tells me that i do indeed have grounds for legal action and would most likely win. how can all these people arguing against this update be wrong. please no bs just answer with a serious adult response. if u cant then please dont just say it doesnt matter or something stupid like that because obviously to us it does.

  • nobody could confirm that that was even a public comment.

  • @5099

Well, only if they have reason to fear piracy or security. Say for example, someone being able to boot a usb iso loader to play ps2 games from an external hdd. But that could never happen; so certainly don’t even think about it or google it XD

PSN, current online games, and OtherOS are still an option if you bypass the fw check. Secure your functionality by performing the following,

    1) google “tutorial bypass ps3 fw update”
    2) follow instructions
    3) DO NOT UPDATE
    4) enjoy existing functionality

If it helped you then pass it along.

  • Ohhhhh…the problem is piracy. Because it’s wrong to take something that somebody else paid for…. I see……

  • @darinl79

I did. The PS3 game when I purchased mine were horrible. But I needed a wireless controller for my PS2 as my kids at the time were destroying cords. So I could get a PS3 play PS2 games until the PS3 games were good. It was a wise move on my part I’ve gotten my value out of the system. I have a few more PS2 games to play through and I will use my PS3 until it dies to play them.

Guess what I bought a PSP to play PS1 classic on. Why not FF7 is great on the road.

tl;dr: your reasons are not law.

  •   This was posted on PS3-Hacks.com by: dominosmd2010-04-01 15:03:28 Figured I’d at least post this somewhere, since Sony made a pathetic move today (April Fools, yeah right) that affects a large number of PS3 owners; the removal of OtherOS. The 3.21 update apparently does nothing but remove a feature for “security concerns.”
I didn’t even want to install it on my PS3 Slim, so I went and adjusted my server to bypass the update for myself and others.Basically, this will allow you to use the PSN and play your games online while still having an older PS3 firmware version installed, such as 3.15.If, eventually, a disc game comes out that requires 3.21, you will be forced to upgrade to play that game; there’s nothing you can do about that yet.
But in the meantime…You can go to customize your network settings from XMB, and get to the part about DNS nameservers. Select custom, and enter the following IP as your Primary DNS:67.202.81.137And there you go, PSN works.
So Basically All You Have To Do Is Make 67.202.81.137 your primary DNS and your ps3 will be able to connect to psn without any updates

  • im a lil confused here, please could some one clarify maybe in “stoner terms” lol… if i have an older version 40gb ps3…i use my flash drive for movies, use the browser sometimes when the laptop is down, and game game game,i also put pics movies and music from a flash drive,….I dwnload games, demos ,and stuff like that…so my Question is???? HOW DOES THIS UPDATE EFFECT ME? Because when i went to settings system settings i believe it said i have used another system before?? it dident say DEFAULT” like the instructions said it would??? SO Now im really confused?what will i NOT be able to do? i know i need the update to play online now and stuff…so im not complaing, just curious…..please could anyone answer this for me!!! thanks a million VeRt2bOsToN

  • oh fine ill do it this way.

  • im online while still running 3.15 :)

  • @Amdusias440

    ROFL.

  • “Playstation 3
    It only does
    Everything”

    Not anymore…

    I’m a sad camper today..

  • The only problem I have with some of the bloggers and the negative press of the update is that it did more then just remove other OS. It removed “Default System” and improved the performance of some Playstation titles.

  • @VERT2BOSTON

If you don’t know what OtherOS is, or care to use it, then this does not affect you at all. You could do yourself a favor though and get informed of what Other OS is and how it could affect you. Have fun gaming.

  • Yeah, Sony will slip the Other OS back in when a “Class Suit” face-palms their April-Fools joke. Sony Computer Entertainment has control over their product, well guess what? So do the people who buy it. I will not play your game SCE, but YOU SCE play MINE…

  • whats with my comments awaiting moderation o_O?

    need i go on?

  • It all boils down to this. Sony advertised the PS3 and sold it with a list of features. Now, they are saying that if you don’t agree to(and download) the update you will lose main functionality. If you want that back you have to agree on losing something you paid for. I don’t know what planet some of you are from, but here on Earth that’s wrong. It’s stealing and it’s fraud. How can it be seen any other way?

  • a comment that rings true by a youtube poster

videogameobsession said “I am pissed about this, but I still laughed at the video… very funny! .. If Sony removed this because they are worried about a hacker they are going about this all wrong… do they not know that most consoles end up hacked for Linux competitions? If you look at how nearly all cracked consoles in recent years, DC, PS2, Xbox, Wii, they were to get Linux running on them. This is a bad move and will only create more motivation on the hackers part”.

  • ok seriously anyone not believing this is an illegal business practice go print out ur terms of service(and eula if u want ) and call the ftc or bbb or ur state attorney general or any consumer protection agency. it’ll take them about 10 minutes to rip any argument for this update u might have to shreds. dont believe us whiners and complainers. instead of wasting ur time on here with us go find out for urself.

  • DEViLiSHWONDER67

im sitting laughing at all the ticked off people. i have to agree , the ones who are most ticked are the ones who are ticked cause they lost the free games. i also wish all the civil suit good luck , your gonna need when ya all are laughed out of the courtroom. you only own the hardware, sony owns the software and you agree to lease it. ya all better check into software rights. you may not like what has transpired, but sony is within thier legal rights ihate to say.

  • @ improperlyaged

When is your Attorney General filing suit?

  • @devilishwonder
wtf are u talking about what free games? u do realize the ps3 wasnt actually hacked right? r u reading this or just saying what will sound good to sony? this is not a piracy issue it is a consumer rights issue. when u pay for something and someone takes it away from u its stealing. period. imagine if they stripped the ps3 of the ability to play mp3’s or dvd’s or store pics or even surf the internet for fear of piracy concerns? then what? i guess its ok cuz at least it stops people from playing bootleg dvd’s or illegally downloaded music right?

  • @DEViLiSHWONDER67

Yet again with the piracy. Read the comments on the blog. Nobody, but the SDF has mentioned Piracy. It’s been you took my feature away.

You are right, this will be settled in a court of law. Until then let the judges (Supreme Court etc) determine what is legal and not legal. You and I are just spectators and regardless of what law we know, not the final judges on this matter.

  • Honestly if some of these people posting in defence of Sony ARE Sony employees well …

  • this is like microsoft disabling the internet connection on your computer because you can potentially download pirated microsoft software off the net..

im sure you guys would love that

  • Exactly @ 5127 I agree. How many times have we agreed to the terms of playstaton? Its hard to have a lawsuit when you agreed to the terms and im sure the terms said something about playstation being able to refuse any service at any given time. They were nice enough to let us know they were going to take it off and they didnt have 2. I dont think its something they wanted to do, but people want to hack into every electronic that comes out. Can we blaim sorry for trying to keep the system safe??

  • Oh well, back to my supposedly inferior Xbox 360 to play Call Of Duty MW2 stimulus package maps. If anyone also has an Xbox and MW2 look me up using the same name I’m logged in with right now.

  • @lemmy
my attorney general can’t file suit until a proceeding is declared with an actual consumer and an investigation takes place. i have to send in or go in with my orginal box or pics of the original box clearly stating the other os function(which i still have). after this i will have to go in for a meeeting to discuss what effect their psn restrictions have had on previous purchases whether it be games or movies or whatever. i also have to bring a print out of my eula and tos so as to prove that they dont expressly state limitations based on firmware(i checked they dont) i’m scheduled to meet someone named lauren at 11am tuesday.

  • @5140 improperlyaged:

Just make sure they know that in order to use the other features (Blu-ray, games) you have to update the firmware, anyway, as newer games, BRDs tend to require it.

  • duh, its an april fools joke!!!!! cmon guys!

  • @Fat_kitty

Checked the 2nd link the JP one since I read Japanese. That article just talking about the 3.0 update and comparison from the old PS3 to the slim so nothing about 3.21 on there.

  • @sponge-worthy
exactly i already informed some dude named alan of that. and he said that is the key. i also noted that the game PAIN requires a psn connection to work and he said that by not allowing me to play that game with 3.15 they are actually committing breach of contract and technically theft or service as video games are considered an entertainment service and they are restricting my access to something that was already payed for. he informed me that i may be legally entitled to reimbursement for my ps3 system at original retail price and any and all physical/psn games. he also informed that legally i will still get to keep everything since i have original proof of ownership by way of receipt.

  • us. playstation .com/support/systemupdates/ps3/index.htm

Is it only me or can anyone see the update log? loads 95% and gets stuck.

  • DEViLiSHWONDER67

lmao impoperlyaged. for the record i dont agree with everything sony does ,being a computer science graduate ,ill never forget the infamous sony rootkit debacle and the pcs i had to repair because of it. but if you research the other os option , you will see it has given acess to the internal workings of the ps3 , albiet my main point here is we dont own the software like so many believe, the rightsholder owns it, and we pay for the right to use it. we have no right to change the code, but if as owner of the software, in this case sony, they have a right to change or modify it in anyway they see fit.

  • SNE finished up $.10 today with no news stories connected to this issue. As you can see this means nothing to the greater finacial world and will have no impact on Sony finacially no matter what happens. It all comes down to making money in today’s corparate world. Sony has developed the best of the new 3D tech and controls Blu-Ray, they are on a roll. How you all feel about the company is meaningless. I have made enough off Sony stock in the last year to buy 100 PS3’s.

  • DEVILSHWONDER U ARE SO WRONG they do not have the right to alter software after purchase without consumer consent. why do u think u have to approve an update to ur itunes or to ur windows on ur pc. duh. n u studied computer science really. if i choose not to update my itunes apple can not restrict me from the itunes store. its illegal. microsoft cant disable internet explorer if i choose not to update a new secutrity patch. to do so is illegal in the united states. again they own the software but iown the right to use it as is unrestricted providing i dont violate the tos. nowhere in sony’s tos is not updating a violation. sorry u fail. go back to school.

  • It’s a good thing they don’t automatically hand out law licenses to computer science grads.

  • jesus how many fools do i have to prove wrong on here???

  • People are rightly pissed because instead of Sony making this console a necessary addition to any and all home entertainment centers (e.g., by adding a usable browser, HD-DVR functionality, flash 10 support, etc.) every stupid update either removes a function (“other OS”) or adds some completely uninteresting function (yeah photo albums!)

More trophies blows. Just wait until the next update when we’ll be asked to trade off free PSN for 3-D that nobody can use because we can’t afford it.

  • @sponge haha lmao
yeah i said the same thing to the guy with the med degree who said we only buy it they control how and when we are allowed to use it. stupid.

  • @Reinhart: I can see the Update history no problem. Although this bugs me that they removed a feature, I don’t use the “Other OS” feature so no loss for me. I am however bugged that they removed something and this sets a very bad precedent.

  • Good article on Sonyinsider.com about how FW:3.21 may effect sony.

lmao, i failed! ok if ya say so, wait and see who failed then, any and all civil suits will fail, mark my words. but go ahead and waste your time. thats what america is about. im just stating facts. doesnt matter if ya believe me or not. thats another thing about america. Ill just say in the end sony will be judged within thier rights and that will be that. doesnt matter to me one way or the other. im just stating a clear fact. matter of fact, one person mention windows updates, that is microsoft changing thier software in the way they want, also with the windows genuine tool to make sure its not a copy but original, sure ya have the right not to upgrade, but if ya dont ya may miss out on certain features. same goes with this update, ya have the right not to upgrade if ya so choose, but you wont be able to use certain features. so they are giving you the choice.

  • @Lemmy

You must have a ton of stock to make $300,000.

    # 52 week 21.27 – 40.45

Most you could have made selling stock is ~$20/share. You would have needed to sell 15,000 shares.

    Annual Dividend: $0.27

$300000/.$30= 1 million share to profit.

Stock up 16% YOY. They are on the move. The financial impact is two ways stock prices and Fiscal year earnings. Those won’t be known for some time. I do agree that I don’t see a financial impact.

  • @5162 erkan_:

That’s typically just industry-speak that you can use install this update over any previous version. That is, it is a comprehensive software package that does not require some intermediate firmware version to already be installed on your system. It is a standalone firmware package on its own–not just a patch for another firmware version.
