The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.
Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;
- Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

I’m curious as to how many comments there would be if Sony hadn’t deleted our early arguments. Currently, the comment number I see is 7318 by HerbertFortoon. That number could be moved down the line as Sony sees things they feel are damaging to their cause. Here’s an idea…instead of erasing the sometimes brilliant and undeniable facts we present, why not take those comments as constructive criticism. While we’re on the subject of not erasing things, how bout leaving my system the way I bought it. Send me updates when other systems advance sure but there is no good reason to take away what I’ve purchased. When I download updates on my Mac, I know it’s not going to surprise me with a note that says if I want to check my email, I’ll have to give up the availability to download other programs. I wouldn’t sell you a car and start pulling pieces off the engine to give you better “security” so don’t sell me a playstation (that emphasized this feature in the first place) and do the same thing.

GreatnessRD – I couldn’t agree with you more. Consoles never should have went online. Get a real friend and sit in the same damn room and play together. Now we rent everything, and everything can be taken away at will.

They’ve removed atleast 5 just from me.
I guess they didn’t want it out there for anyone to know just how bad researchers are affected.They’ve affected future clusters for those who can’t afford access to a super computer at 6K+ a cycle.
One last thing.I do not play any games online,but i did updates just for the features…And now it appears i’ll be updating in the future to lose features.If i had not just bought a new 3D TV, i would not have updated,because i want the FW 3.20 that has the 3D update in it……………….So for that reason alone i had to update, and just for the games,as i purchased a 3D capable BluRay player when i bought the TV.

I would have thought that Sony had learned something after their great success with their music CD DRM management venture, but no, don’t ever take your customers’ needs and interests into consideration, all you care about is maximizing profits! Don’t bother with all the fancy explanations, what I notice is that my PS3 can no longer be used for online purposes, except to log on to the Playstation store!!! Of course I will not abandon the other OS, it was one of the key reasons why I bought the console in the first place. One thing is certain, unless this is fixed in favour of the customers, i.e. a full refund for consoles rendered useless by the software downgrade or an immediate release of version 3.22 with the other os option back in, I promise never to buy any product ever again that carries the Sony name or logo!

Google “Mathieuh talks PS3” for some more information. It seems that removing OtherOS from Slim models was what kickstarted PS3 hacking, eventually leading to Geohot’s exploit. Previously hackers hadn’t bothered with the PS3, since homebrew was possible, even if limited.
Just left a complaint with the BBB. Feel much better but nothing will happen. There needs to be another way for consumers. Screw you Sony!! Waste your time and money answering to BBB!!

Well, I’ve stayed silent for a long time but no more. The gaming industry is taking a nose dive this year thanks to moves like this.
I would be find with this update if you actually explained what security concerns the OtherOS option presented. I may have gave it up. But since you’ve ignored everyone 21 days since the update went live, I see this move as cowardly and a lazy response to GeoHotz hack.
I thank you for not allowing me to play online because of vague “security concerns,” and I will not update ever.
2010 is the year of “The customer is always last,” and the worst year in gaming industry. Thank you for your contribution.
And another thing: Why could you take time out to fix the DNS exploit, but could not take the time to fix the security issues with the hypervisor?

i work at a shop where we fix xbox and ps3 systems, every customer that comes in with ps3’s that have problems i tell them about what sony is doing and if they havent updated i show them this forum for them to see and some just tell me to not fix the unit and we end up selling them a fixed xbox, im doing my part and alot of people on here are doing it to
oh and i forgot to mention that i also show them the custom firmware thats coming out and that it will continue like that with every update that sony brings, you should see their faces, i get a joy telling them this, little by little im slowly taking away legit customers away from SONY.

3.30 firmware is now out. Note that they specifically call it a “mandatory update”. Wasn’t their only legal defence that the updates were “optional”? Take a screen capture or something, they may change it.
Not even microsoft does this. Sony…you have screwed yourselves, messing with the hacking community. You need to fire the programming and network staff because they obviously have not a damn clue what they are doing! Did you hire them from the best buy geek squad? My grandfather could do a better job than your staff. Yes there are people that don’t care about what you do they just want to play games, but the majority of the people that purchased a “fat” PS3 liked, wanted, and used the Other OS feature. One of two things are going to happen, you are going to get hit with a class action lawsuit or you are going to be hacked. Only reason I was considering buying ps3 over xbox 360 was the other os feature now that is gone what the point when xbox has more games at same price. Before I buy a PS3 the price better drop

Sigh, I caved, backed up all my Ubuntu files, reformatted and updated. Took about 6 hours. Sony seems content to ignore this until it goes away and I don’t want to own a $550 paperweight. But now they’ve got 3D coming in 3.30. Oh look! Flashy 3D for TVs nobody owns! That should distract everyone from the Other OS removal, right? I haven’t got the time or energy to fight this, but I wish anyone who does the best of luck. My future non Sony purchases will have to do the fighting for me.

We need to untie our gaming systems from the internet. Too much functionality is based on the cloud and now we are forced to stare at our consoles that we so dearly paid for. Nuh-uh, there has to be a better way. Online gaming is great but I want to play my games without you SONY forcing me to do optional updates….you’re wording sucks, you’re lawyers are good at what they do and you all are a bunch of scammers, Microsoft at least tells you there going to screw you upfront and you know what you’re getting into but you guys are some other piece of garbage. Geohot hack away!
Unfortunately, newer game discs will force you to update in order to play them, even if you stay off the Internet.
