The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.
Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;
- Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

Has anyone started a database of games that require this update? This should be done so we don’t get ripped off anymore than we have already…
i am going to play it safe and not purchase any games released after 2009
sony, as angry as i am over this decision, (i know i am not alone) i think you would be able to redeem yourself if you would re-enable the other OS feature on your own. instead of making us wait for geohot’s cfw. instead of retaliating with negative actions to our circumventions (blocking the DNS for example) you could easily save yourselves by just giving us what we asked for. i’m sure fighting with us is both more stressful and expensive then simply giving us back what made your system so great in the first place.

thats funny i do the same [DELETED] and my old skool 5 fan intercooler in over time fringin loud bastard, but exactly how many of u actually use ubuntu, or yellowdog, for thos of u that dont its really not a big deal, but for users like me it is a big deal, i paid 499.00 for mine and a 199.00 exented warranty and bought 18 games on its intial release bought all the accessories as well and im telling i like flipping it into a supercomputer and reverting backing to play my games, yeah linux is slow as hell but it is an option i paid for as for backwards compatibility 4 usbs etc…. i could of went with a 40 gb or maybe a 60 gb for 399.00 but i didnt i did my research and bought the ultimate 80 gb that supports other os and i will not make that update to 3.21 i will stay 3.15 till its fixed

You’re wrong, anyone who buys a PS3 is quite within their rights to do what ever they want with it.
If you buy a car and decide to install a new stereo, alloy wheels, go faster stripes, change the engine, etc, etc, nobody would consider that illegal why because YOU OWN THE CAR IT’S YOUR PROPERTY.
You buy a PS3, yet if you change anything you’re doing something wrong!
HACKING IS NOT THE SAME AS PIRATING but becuase it usually leads to pirating that’s why the companies WANT you to think it’s illegal.
And let’s be honest if all the Sony devs can come up with for new firmware is sorting trophies then perhaps hacking it will give us firmware that’s useful.

They didn’t have to punish everyone for one person’s illegal actions. They could have easily banned Geohot or even arrested him if possible instead of pulling this move off.
Yes, Geohot started the ball rolling, but Sony re-routed the ball on the wrong course and now it’s causing a ton of collateral damage.
By the way, be warned that comments to this article will probably close soon (usually comments are closed after 30 days). So somewhere else will need to be found for complaints and discussion.
Newer firmware update posts are one possibility. Assuming they still remove OtherOS, it’s relevant especially to those of us who haven’t updated.

It’s more like locking the door of your theatre so thieves (people sneaking in without paying), and also the people who booked and paid for tickets, can’t get in. If you refuse to give refunds, it’s just going to give a lot more people new incentive to find some alternate way in.
