PS3 Firmware (v3.21) Update

7,437 0

The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.

In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.

Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;

  • Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
  • Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
  • Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
  • Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later

For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

  • At big boss, have you read what you typed. You explained the reason they have done it in your complaint. It is something useful, it’s protecting you.

  • I dont use the other os feature, but forcing a firmware release with that as the only “feature” is a crappy move Sony. At least bundle it with a feature or stability to your network. Geez.

  • This guy has NEVER EVER given a firmware post before. It has to be an april fools joke. Look at his title, why the hell would he do a firmware update?

    Pretty silly.

  • WOW, all these technical geniuses on here. They have to force it in a firmware. If its to protect the PSN then everyone will have to update to go online.

  • im going to love this update its the best one ever

  • SECURITY IS YOUR PROBLEM NOT OURS, I WANT MY MONEY SO I CAN BOUGHT ANOTHER SYSTEM FROM COMPANIES THAT ARE MORE RELIABLE.

YOU KNOW THAT, I’M GONNA TAKE SOME ACTIONS IF YOU DO THIS.

  • poor complainers. wah, sniffle.

  • Fair enough I say, if it keeps the PS3 secure.

  • GUYS IT HAS TO BE A JOKE, SINCE WHEN WE GET BLOG NEWS ON A SUNDAY NIGHT? FOR SOME THAT CAN WAIT TILL TOMORROW MONDAY? I THINK JEFF R. IS BEHIND THIS JOKE HAHAHA HILARIOUS!!!!

  • I hope that this is a joke……3.15 to 3.21?? what happened to 3 .20?….yes, this must be the Aprils da joke….oh,yes….I think :-(…..Sony dont do it!!!!!

  • i’m glad that they’re getting rid of a useless feature. unless this is a joke since they’ve always maintained that they wouldn’t get rid it on the PS3 models that supported this feature.

if it’s true, the next thing they need to cut is the browser.

  • Oh…I knew that this would happen, when geohot starts hacking in PS3 through Linux…

  • ok…..

THIS has to be a joke, first off April 1st, what are the chances out of the last 4-5 months we all have been waiting. The military bought playstations JUST to use this feature so they could run software to do calculations. Also it says “Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later” well……

What features could those be sony, really, what could the be. If this isnt a joke, and this is all it does SONY FAILS. I have been a sony fanboy for about 14 years, yes, 14 years, I have owned several of every console, own thousands of dollars worth of there equipment, from TV’s, to Blu-ray players, to 3 Ps3’s, to alarm clocks. But if this is what they are releasing then you need to FIRE your WHOLE ******* SOFTWARE TEAM as they do not understand what the **** we all want. If this isnt the case, then sony played a great prank on all of use, and that seems to be the case, I mean come on, all the days they could have released something and it was APRIL 1st. Sony, Please do not disappoint me, please……

    Dereileak!

  • Jesus Christ, people need to seriously calm down. Did anyone even read the post, or do they just scan looking for buzzwords.

Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat

Does anyone actually understand that? No? I didn’t think so. What that’s saying is, “now you can sign into Playstation Network and use all the stuff that you always could when signing into Playstation Network.”

This is the reason everyone hates fanboys. Because you throw your temper tantrums when Sonys trying to have a little bit of fun.

    RE. LAX.

  • if they said update 3.16 I would have been concerned…but, no fret. :S

  • @106… well it says before that statement: “although the following features will no longer be available;” so it does make sense. Either way, this doesn’t bother me. ;)

  • I wonder if their movie partners put some pressure on Sony about this…

  • Hooray! Less features that you can shove on us or we can’t play the games we purchased for the PS3! Please tell me soon you’ll be removing the ability for the models with it to play PS2 games or else you can’t play PS3 games as well!
    You guys are evil.

  • uahahahuahahah they afraid of geo hotz jailbreaking the system thats why they removing the other os feature still if that dude was able to hack the iphone he’s going to hack the ps3 someday…Even if he hacks the ps3 hacking the ps3 is not on my radar I’m not going to download 25-30 worth of data just to play offline..

  • IT ONLY DOES REMOVE FEATURES ™

    :-)

Bad move, Sony. You will now only encourage the Linux Freaks to hack your system. The only reason they did not until now was because of this feature! You have unleashed the rage of the Linux nerds now!

  • This is total [DELETED]. Why remove a feature people like instead of making a proper security fix? Sony FTL… :(

  • well I personally think it is bad form to remove a feature without giving something in return…but I still stand behind Sony as my SECOND favorate system this generation. And I love my PS2 from last gen!

  • Is Sony looking to have a class action lawsuit. I suggest you restore Install Other OS immediately.

  • I expected this and don’t blame Sony at all.

  • This is more like a punishment than a way to stop people trying to crack the ps3. The people working on this aren’t going to update their firmware to prevent themselves from working on this. So they will continue to work to develop a modchip to be able to bypass the ps3 security. However, the people who are legitimately using the feature, which is more than the numbers of illegitimately using it (Probably single digits here), are going to be the ones that will lose. And in the end, we’ll have a feature removed that in reality doesn’t stop the ps3 from being cracked, and will make Sony look like a sore loser. This move is screwing legit users while will ultimately do nothing to stop the illegitimate users. Do it another way, Sony. Maybe we can register to have this feature unlocked?

  • my name is gustavo diaz and i just turn into an xbox 360.

  • I give up on ever trying to educate people.

Good luck with your downs syndrome.

  • April 1st? Could this be an April Fools joke? :D

  • Cmon people, It says April 1, 2010 (JST). Not even with a time. Why are you little children always in an uproar over firmware updates?

  • ps3, where i got rip off happens.

where paying 600 dollars for no cross game chat happens.

    where no good games happen.

    ps3, where [DELETED] happens.

  • I don’t exactly want PS3’s to get hacked and end up suffering like the PSP did.

But, on the other hand, having a homebrew enabled PS3 might allow for some demanded features that we aren’t getting quickly enough… cough, cough!

Joking joking, I prefer to keep everything 100% officially Sony!

  • I hope this is a Joke… haha

:( If not then you are crazy $ony… EPIC FAILNESS!!!

I was thinking of using this feature “Install Other OS”. I would have to say this feature plus others features make the ps3 intriguing and also allows the ps3 to really deserves to have the tagline: “does everything”. I did not pay alot of money for the ps3 to have my features removed that I am using or will be using in the future. It is for the best that you add more features to the older models of the playstation 3 then to remove any EVER!!!!!!!!

  • This is pure wrong… when i bought my PS3, one of the features I paid for was the ability to install Linux on the PS3.. Are you going to compensate folks who are going to loose this feature?

  • Is this all because of what geohot did? If so then this is ridiculous, one of the main reasons I chose the PS3 over the 360 was this feature. Can I sue? Or at least get my money back so I can buy a 360 just to spite SONY? I better at least get some kind of compensation for the loss of this feature like a gift card to the playstation store. This kind of thing is unacceptable.

  • Wait really ? I use linux twice a week easily on my PS3, and now im stuck between losing out on gaming or a critical work environment… I hope theres compensation because that would mean id have to buy a second PC which is a 200$ im not ready to spend.

  • Guys calm down! I know they’re taking away a feature but you’re missing one part. On the last bullet point it says “Use of NEW FEATURES AND IMPROVEMENTS that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later.” There’s still going to be new features on this software update because it includes 3.21. Also it will have more info will be on the link on his post, so they’re still adding new ideas to the software update 3.21….. hopefully.

  • 600 dolares, Ylod and now linux remove. Great sony for suport the gamers supported you of the beginning.

  • Japan Standard Time or JST

  • GUYS THINK ABOUT IT, WHY WOULD SONY CHOOSE APRIL 1ST TO DO THAT, THAT WOULD BE LIKE THEM CALLING US FOOLS, JUST THINK ABOUT IT. WE PROBABLY ARE GONNA GET AN UPDATE BUT NOT WITH THAT, WHO KNOWS MAYBE CROSS CHAT JUST TO MAKE MORE IMPACT.

  • Awesome.

  • wheres the cross game voice chat firmware update :D

  • $10 the remove “Other OS” feature is a April Fools joke. Sony should Say Cross Game chat will also be included in this update lol.

  • How many of you that complain uses or even thought about using the “Other OS” feature? I bet it’s not even close to 99%.
So why are you complaining? Are people really this dumb?

Why even have another OS in the first place?

It’s like getting upset over a restaurant removing the option to add manure to your soup. It makes no sense.

  • Japan Standard Time?

  • I use to be obsessed with the ‘Number 23’ but now I’m obsessed with 4. It’s everywhere! Did you know that the update # is listed as 3.21. Now, 3+2-1 = 4. OMG!!!! 4 Is also the fourth month of the year which is April! There are also EXACTLY 4 bullet points in this news story! SEE!!!

…seriously people, calm down. Raise your hand if you’ve actually used this feature please.

Post Below this line if you’ve used this feature ————–

  • I love how all the Sony Suckups thank Sony for taking away a feature and “protecting them”. That said, I hope this is a joke. But it wouldn’t be a funny one.

Maybe it is secretly to prevent another ApocalyPS3 that will happen on April 1st at midnight. ;-)
