Killzone 3 Announced and Playable in 3D

Well, the title pretty much says it all, doesn’t it?

Our friends in Europe (“where the history comes from”) recently held an event where journalists went hands-on with Killzone 3… in 3D. SCEE’s James Gallagher was there, and he’s got what you want to know: details.

Earlier this month I made my first trip to Amsterdam and while I didn’t get chance to visit the Van Gogh Museum, I did get a different sensory treat: I got to play Killzone 3 in 3D.

The select group of journalists invited had little idea of what to expect as they climbed the stairs to a private cinema in Amsterdam’s Melkweg, but soon Hermen Hulst, Managing Director of Guerrilla Games, took to the podium and revealed all.

Killzone 3 picks up where its predecessor left off and it’s a much grander experience in terms of scale and ambition. There will be more variety, more enemy types, massive environments and a broader vision of the planet Helghan and its many terrains. The presentation closed with a beautifully violent video montage of the Brutal Melee attacks, which are the new close range attacks.

I caught up with Hermen after his presentation to ask how community feedback has shaped Killzone 3.

“As you may know, we are always in close contact with the Killzone community,” he said. “The response to Killzone 2 has been fantastic but there is a general response that it had too many ‘corridors.’ We have to temper that with the knowledge that many players really enjoy that gameplay style. Our plan is to solve this dilemma with huge variation in gameplay styles.

“We had plenty of variety in Killzone 2 but much of it was introduced in the second half of the game. This time around, right from the start every new level has its own distinct feel.”

The level playable at the show was set in an arctic environment and introduced a number of new gameplay elements. One of the most eye-catching is the new jet packs: first you must fight off three Jetpack Troopers, who are quick and heavily armed. Once you defeat them, you discover a spare jetpack that you can strap yourself into. It works like an exaggerated jump, allowing you to soar high into the air and use the forward thrust twice before having to land, and opens up the possibilities for platforming and aerial combat.

ScreenShot_2009_03_21_1814

“If you remember, the Jetpack Troopers were in Killzone: Liberation on PSP and we’ve always wanted to bring them back,” explained Hermen. “When you include aerial combat you obviously need plenty of space so the much bigger levels in Killzone 3 have presented us with the opportunity to include this enemy.”

The story is an important part of the Killzone experience so I asked him to set the scene. Warning: there’s a Killzone 2 spoiler in his response.

“We recognise how important the story is in Killzone games,” he replied, “and we’re making great leaps forward with character development and the quality of the dialogue and the writing. We’re going all-out to make Killzone 3 a rounded experience on all fronts.

“So with Visari gone, there’s a power vacuum on Helghan where figures like Stahl, the head of the Helghan weapon producer, are vying for power. Essentially, the surviving ISA soldiers are caught in the middle of a catfight when what they really need is to get the hell off the planet and return to Vekta.

“On the ground, this political situation changes the nature of the conflict. The Helghan are now in the ascendency and they are bringing a great deal of new technology to the fray. The result for the player is that you’ll be encountering new weapons and enemy types with their own distinct behaviour.”

Finally, I was told beforehand that we wouldn’t be mentioning multiplayer at this particular event but I knew you wouldn’t forgive me if I didn’t at least broach it, so I asked how much of the team’s energy is going into this component.

“We always refer to multiplayer as ‘the other half of the game’,” he said, “meaning that it’s just as important to us as single player. It’s an area on which we have key individuals working and I can promise true innovation. Right now we’re looking through all of the feedback we received on Killzone 2, particularly around accessibility.”

I came away with so many thoughts and impressions from the event that I feel like I could write a short novel. Head to over to eu.playstation.com to read an impressions piece that I wrote, which goes into more detail on the incredible stereoscopic 3D. Feel free to ask questions in the comments; I have more info and quotes from Hermen that I can drop in there where relevant.

Thanks, James. As you (and I) salivate over these impressions from Europe, know that we’ll have our own take on things coming very soon. Anything more you’d like to know about Killzone 3? Ask away below and we’ll save those answers for our next post.

  • Then Rico (that is still alive sadly) throws you a bazooka (or the name that those weapons have in the game) and with some cool camera angle and awesome epic soundtrack you prepare to fight the mechanical beast.

  • The camera returns to your perspective and it is show time!!!

Obviously what I have written have a lot of influence from MGS, but you don’t necessarily end up fighting the commander in the top of the destroyed mech in hand to hand combat XD; but you cant deny it would so FU•$ING EPIC A KNIFE FIGHT in first person view in a stage surrounded of mech parts, mech blood (or oil :D) and fire everywhere.

So guys what you think of my story telling direction?? :D I think that KZ need that kind of stuff. Other than that, the gameplay is awesome.

  • Killzone 3 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Halo

  • Wait are we already in E3?

    -Little Big Planet 2
    -Killzone 3
    – Hints of Uncharted PSP
    – God of War: Ghost of Sparta

I’m scared of the stuff you guys are saving for E3. Are you telling me you guys have things better than what you’ve already announced hidden away for us to see? Oh My god I might need to go out and buy some disposable diapers for E3..

  • YES! I’ve been waiting for pictures for a while now. I can’t wait! I love KZ2. I’m trying to get the Platinum now. I hope we can Party up with friends or something like that in the Multiplayer. I CAN’T WAIT!

  • @154

Don’t get your hopes up, man. There is little to nothing left, trust me.

We will have 20 min dedicated to Move and it’s lousy shovel ware
We will have 10 min dedicated to PSP and the PSP2
We will have 15 min dedicated to HOME and all it’s lousy $#*T
We will have 15min of all the games we’ve seen already and then they will show Infamous 2 and maybe Resistance 3. Maybe. Don’t hold your breath for it because Insomniac wants to push their new IP and Sony wants to push Killzone 3. Motorstorm 3 might make an appearance but really what’s the point?

  • The BEST FPS ever….I cannot wait to play the next iteration! My only gripe was the midget stature of Sev comapred to the rest of the cast and that i would have loved to play as the Helghast!

  • I can not wait for KZ3 this game is going to be epic.
just one question any word on a release date.

  • im jw is it only in 3d or can u just watch it normal because im not planing on getting a 3d tv it’s to much money!!

  • i hope it don’t come out this year, just to push 3D on to gamers.

  • Just make the story and multiplayer better and it’s a buy.

  • Only 3 things I want: offline multi-player, offline and online campaign co-op, and more weapons with customizations on them. Please have them comment on these!

  • If the PSP2 is announced I will take a crap and pre-order it now, just don’t make it cost more than $250 or else the brand may die, sorry to say.

  • so… it’s coming out next year?

  • WILL THIS GAME FIX THE LAGGY CONTROLLS?? LIKE THOSE IN CALL OF DUTY?
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please answer im sure many of us have this question.

  • I can’t wait, love the series!

By the way, are you guys saving any announcements for E3?

  • i swear i like killzone 2, but i never got in to it so it just sat and collected dust lol. i played it last week though after playing MW2 non stop and everything was all greek to me but after setting the controls to as close as possible to MW2 everything made sense. what i really want in KZ3 is a complete custom button mapping so i can change the buttons on my own and not have different presets of what you think is best for us. also this isn’t important but it would be cool to see the playstation move as an option on this game too. playstation move + 3D = ZOMG

  • meh…

    I hope 3D isn’t mandatory.

Otherwise, it’s an interesting post, and I’m curious to see what they new things they bring to the table for Killzone 3.

It’s still hard to get excited this early though…

But, I’ll definately keep my eye on this one!

  • To all the 3D haters, you don’t have to play the game in 3D. Also this is gonna be AWESOME, and he mentioned new weapons in there, SWEET.

  • 3d gaming has to take a toll on the overall engine. Had they just focused on the graphics and physics we’d have a game that actually looks better than part 2. We don’t have that now, though. Why you ask? Because Sony is beating their chest to this 3-d junk.

What I find funny is that they won’t give us certain options and features for the OS because memory is being used here n’ there but then they back 3-d gaming which takes a huge hit to any engine to replicate. Whatever Sony. You’re last place for a reason. And if John Krease was here he’d kick your @$$ and tell you that you’re a loser and ya lost.

  • this should have been left for e3, and i’m really going to wait until 3d tv’s that don’t require crappy glasses. wearing glasses on top of my glasses to play a video game doesn’t sound appealing. this whole 3dtv with glasses fad is really lame in my opinion.

  • Spirit Thief , that is your opinion and 3D is coming rather you like it or not and secondly how is 3D lame ? if you are going hate on 3D then buy xbox360 then

  • @Pirate
I agree. I wear glasses myself and I refuse to dawn full regalia just to play a game. Soon you’ll want us wearing gloves and vest and helmets. Pork you and your gaming when that day comes. Gaming has already lost its appeal anyways. The days of good, clean, fun gaming is done. The Nes, Snes/Gen and Ps1 days is where it died. The Ps2 days is where things shifted and then the xbox 360 really ushered in a new era of pay first and enjoy later. Sony is following that path and I don’t like it.
Pay for this and that and this and then maybe enjoy a 7 hour game. Pork you, Sony.

  • Why? Why not save this for E3 its only weeks away and also for LBP2 , If these two were announced during E3 it would only make Sony’s E3 better.
What could you possibly be saving for E3?

  • !!!You Dumb Fuks!!! 3D is an option you can play in visually so stop posting up things about 3D. go to gamespy.com that’s where they said 3D is only an option.

  • @175

Well, the reason Sony did this is because it is throwing all of the journalist and sites off the trail. They don’t want them breaking any story or news about their little pay to play PSN service and they don’t want them breaking any news about the new touch screen PSP2. That is what is going on. I’m not stupid and that is exactly what Sony is leveraging at E-3 and banking on to make a splash.

You will be flooded with MOVE stuff ad you will be hit with a new paid PSN sub that is optional, yet will take away features from non paying PS3 owners. For instance demos and such will come to the paid members first and some games will and so forth and so on.

Just wait for it guys. Sony is setting us all up for a massive jab in the shorts.

  • @176

Yes, 3-d is an option but it is taking away resources from the engines in which the games were built on. Making a game 3d isn’t a simple 500kb or ram hit. It’s a massive endeavor that takes away huge potential engine gains that could’ve been made over the years. The game looks no better than part 2 and that is fact. It could have had the dev’s and Sony not spent so much of their resources on this stupid 3d junk, though.

Killzone 3 looks like Killzone 2 in a new location. People think it looks sooooooo much better but it doesn’t. They’re sticker shocked by the new locations and that is that.

  • @ Geurilla Games-i’m going to try and not repeat anything on other weebsites
    1. plz have sev talking during the campaign; it helps give the character more emotion liike in uncharted. Something as simple as saying “Damn” wen u take alot of damage, “Yes!” wen getting a headshot or “do i always have to save u?” when resuscitating a character
2.Not to much cursing plz, because it gets iritating
3.add killzone 3 to the killzone website
    4.bigger maps 4 multiplayer also
    P.S. thanks 4 a great game with killzone 2

That is just the tip of the ice berg. Sony is pushing for us all to go out and buy new tv’s. The ps3 is in last place and not returning profit quick enough and thus they have to resort to other tactics to remain viable. That is the truth.

  • looks good but hopefully MP will be much better on KZ3.

    dont care about 3D tho…

Please dont put jetpacks in MP

  • RurouniSaiya-jin

Hell yeah! An awesome announcement. Hope there will be plenty of info at E3.

  • 4 players offline Splitscreen mode please its a FPS and offline MP is a must, every goddamn shooter should have offline mp,

  • PLEASE have a better story that’s interesting and makes us want to keep progressing in the game. Uncharted 2 did this briliantly! I loved KZ2 for the gameplay, the visuals and the multiplayer, but the story is the only thing i felt was not up to par.

Also better dialouge…RICO does not need to curse every other word!! gets annoying after a while.

I can’t wait for this game, and can’t wait for the first trailer!!!

  • How many people are laughing at the morons who think 3D is mandatory and don’t realize that it’s a settings option that can be used for those who DO have a 3D TV?

    *raises hand*

Oh man, the general public. Lol.

  • As it was mentioned before…….NEEDS to include, 4 player Split screen and Online Co-op, MORE VEHICLES and NEW weapons to cause mayhem specially in multiplayer with an expanded and deeper badge system taken to next level, YouTube uploads and of course…….an unlockable unique REWARD for those who earned/finished KZ 2 with certain amount of TROPHIES. Oooooh ! And a Helghast soldier/figurine included in the KZ 3 Special Edition. Thank You

  • @Guerilla Games again lol
a “Flashback Pack” 4 multiplayer with maps from killzone and killzone 2 FOR FREE. There’s nothing worse than paying 4 old maps. This way if someone with killzone 2 wants the flash and thunder map 4 example, they will buy kz3 leading to a bigger online community

  • nice,i hope they can include co-op online. variety of weapons and modes and i will be happy.

  • PLEASE ADD STORY MODE CO OP, K2 WAS MEANT TO BE COOP PLEASE MAKE K3 COOP LOVED KILLZONE 2 AND KILLZONE 3 WILL BE A FIRST DAY BUY FOR ME, ONLINE WAS ADDICTIVE HOPE THE ONLINE MAPS ARE EVEN BIGGER AND OPEN THAN K2, GREAT JOB SONY N GUERRILLA LOVE THE 3D NEWS GETTING A 3DTV THIS YEAR SO IM GOOD TO GO.

  • super excited about this, as long as 3D is optional. I hope the game doesnt suffer from killzone 2’s major problem. lack of a compelling storyline, and every level just thrusted you into a warzone without any real storyline. There were no characters with compelling personalities. It was a good game, no doubt. But it could have been so much better if they spent more time creating a narrative and characters you cared about.

2nd major problem, excessive and unnecessary f bombs. Felt over used and tired an hour into killzone 2. Adults are jaded by this language, it only appeals to kids. Get it out, or use sparingly.

  • I’m honestly sick and tired of 3D. I don’t enjoy it in the movies (as it’s nearly always gimmicky) and I HIGHLY doubt it will be any different in games.

I’ll go ahead and call it. There will be some scene in the game where you get knocked down, and then a squad-mate will extend his arm to you (In 3D… woo).

Hopefully this won’t affect the core gameplay (or at least the time for develop) of Killzone 3, although I’m nearly sure it will.

Here’s to hope that the game turns out well.

  • I’m so excited to hear more about KZ3, KZ2 is my favorite PS3 game as of yet.

Here’s some things I would like more info on, though:

Will there be any aesthetic customization (different outfits or skins) aside from the class skins?

Any chance of a Helghast campaign?

Any chance of co-op campaign or side missions that are co-op exclusive?

Will there be some sort of Survival or Horde Mode?

Will there be Perks or Boosters?

  • I recommend there should be a BETA. :I

  • Ate we gonna have to buy a 3D TV to play KZ3, or is it optional?

  • FIX the CONTROLS make them more responsive make a matchmaking for online and add splitscreen online and off and its a MUST buy for me.

  • cool stuff

  • Isn’t it to fast for this?
and what you want 3D for? o.o
it would suck if you need a tv to play 3D.

  • There is nothing wrong with the controls of KZ2…it isn’t Unreal Tournament or an arcade fighter like MW. How about you let the developer go with their artistic vision and see where it gets you. Why people want every fighting game to control the same is beyond me…why even bother buying new games if all you want is the same old same old?

  • X-MellowMixMan-X

can yall make the looking from left to right and up and down with know lag, pliz make it an instent turn thanx

  • Jesse_Soldier95

The reason i bought a PS3 was because of Killzone2, i had so much fun playing KZ1 and when i got my PS3 with Killzone 2 packaged with it, i played nonstep but what killed my passion for this amazing game was call of duty…….but now i like battlefield and soon its gonna be killzone 3 :)

  • Can’t wait to get my hands on it… Sick!
