The Ultimate 3D Experience: Stereoscopic 3D Gaming on PlayStation 3 Available Tomorrow

232 0

Hi everyone! The moment is here — starting tomorrow, high-definition stereoscopic 3D gaming will be available in your very own living rooms! As you already know, all PlayStation 3 systems are already equipped with everything they need to play stereoscopic 3D games. Thanks to a free firmware update released this past April, the PS3 system is the only console on the market that can support full stereoscopic 3D gaming — right from your living room, and with no additional charge.

Today, our sister company Sony Electronics announced its 3D capable BRAVIA HDTVs are now available for pre-sale and will ship to retailers later this month. There are a broad range of models available in different screen sizes, some packaged with active glasses and others without, giving consumers the option to choose which 3D entertainment solution works for them. We’re extremely excited to be at the helm of a whole new gaming experience unlike anything offered before. Starting tomorrow, the following games and demos will be available in stereoscopic 3D for anyone who owns a PS3 system and 3D television:

  • WipEout HD (full game): Experience the adrenalin rush of navigating the twists and turns of futuristic racetracks at breathtaking speeds like never before.
  • Super Stardust HD (full game): Experience asteroids fly past you as you navigate the deadly battleground — only a battle on a cosmic level will save the indigenous life below from destruction.
  • PAIN: The stereoscopic 3D content will include the Downtown area and tutorial along with three modes, including two new modes created specifically with stereoscopic 3D in mind, Alien Toss and Ice Breaker.
  • MotorStorm Pacific Rift (demo): MotorStorm Pacific Rift in stereoscopic 3D puts you in the driver’s seat of a buggy for a one track, single player race around the deadly Kanaloa Bay for a dangerously real battle against ruthless opponents.

To give PS3 and new 3D capable BRAVIA owners a sample of 3D entertainment at its best, 3D capable BRAVIA HDTVs will come with PlayStation Network vouchers to download these four stereoscopic 3D game experiences, which total more than 100 hours of gameplay.

We’re also announcing that The Fight: Lights Out will be available in stereoscopic 3D, combining PlayStation Move with 3D to deliver an immersive and realistic gaming experience unlike anything you’ve played before. This is only a small taste of the 3D experiences you can expect with the new 3D capable BRAVIA HDTVs and PS3. With new gaming experiences coming this year in the form of stereoscopic 3D gaming and PlayStation Move, as well as an expansive software line-up, the PS3 system truly does everything and continues to be at the forefront of innovation. In addition, 3D Blu-ray movie playback is coming to the PS3 this year via firmware update. Stay tuned for even more 3D news and announcements coming in the near future!

  • After Avatar, everybody wants 3D.

  • sure sounds great but not for my wallet cuz the 3D tv sure sounds expensive

  • I back Sony when it comes to alot of things, however this doesn’t seem like a good idea.

Going out to get a new TV is highly unlikely. Even then I would like to see more hardcore games get 3D functionality. Sure I’ve heard about Killzone and a couple others but still. I’d like to know what publishers are even interested in the technology.

I do have two questions though. Is 3D capability difficult to implement into a title post-release or even a new title all together? Also is it possible to play a 3D game without a 3D TV or just not suggested?

  • why can’t games/movies also be in 3D Anaglyph images also, I don’t mind getting red/cyan $0.50 glasses to play 3D on my HDTV!!

  • It it live yet?

  • The avatar game allready 3d ready for ps3 ,I well get one in about 2years when the tech gets better and the price drops

  • I have seen 3d tv at best buy the last few months and it can change a cable channle to 3d iras watching a live NBA game in 3d of the 3d bluray player can turn any movie in to 3d but it’s not good if the movie has the 3d info on it Avatar will be rereleased in 3d bluray about nov the movie monsters vs Aleans with 3d is out all ready

  • Lucifuge_Rofocal

sony going to buy us new tv

  • i’ll wait for KZ3

  • 3D is going to crash and burn. Just like it did a few decades ago. And for the same reasons. It has all the same problems it did back then.

It’s a gimmick. It’s a visual parlor trick which requires special glasses and makes a significant portion of the population nauseous.

When we someday have a display which does _real_ 3D instead of stereoscopic 3D, that is going to be an enormous hit which will take the world by storm.

But stereoscopic 3D? No. It will burn bright as a fad for a while and then snuff out as soon as the novelty is done. Just like before.

Avatar didn’t do so well because it was 3D. It did so well because it was a great film. The guy’s previous film was in regular ole 2D and brought in huge wads of cash, too.

  • Anything that requires special glasses like this is just a silly idea. Why not just make some glasses with little LCD panels in them? Oh wait, that was done many years ago (and was a failure). But at least with that, you could look around with head tracking and total immersion in addition to the 3D. There was a mechwarrior game that was pretty fun, but not much else. This fishtank 3D is just a waste of Sony resources.

  • You ppl are so wrong.
We (gamers) will be in the front of 3d. Cause games will take the most out of 3d.

Sony – next time – don’t say – tommorow – give us an hour please.

  • We can play these free demos but where can we get the 3D glasses?

  • Well – you need to buy a 3d screen. Panasonic and samsung are already selling. Not sure about sony themselfs
If you have DLP tv or projector – there is a way to use them
i’ve read about some1 using Nvidia’s computer glasses with Mitsubishi DLP TV, and avatar game.

  • I think many of you who are worried this is too early, are too short-sighted yourselves. This is just a first step. Virtually all new TVs will be 3D from here on out. IT’S AN OPTION on your TV.

Myself, I am VERY excited to try out Sony’s new XBR line-up with the HX900 series. For someone earlier, it’s basically an improved XBR8 with 3D.

Also, I read an interview talking with a developer talking about the enhanced level of precision in a 3D First Person Shooter game, due to the “depth” we can now perceive.

3D is the future of gaming, and it’s here whether you get in now or in the next few years.

… Now if someone can get the word back to Sony that our older ES Amps need an update for 3D pass through, so I can keep my High Def Audio and not have to downgrade to an optical cable.

  • Well, it’s about time! I thought I would never have anything to play on my new 50″ Panasonic Plasma FHD-3DTV. Now, just get me some patches for Pacific Rift full game, Killzone 2, Mod Nation RAcers, Uncharted 2, M.A.G., and God of War 3 and I will be happy for a while until you can get us a FW for 3D BluRay movie playback. But, for the love of god, get moving! I want more 3D content please. asap!

  • I find myself underwhelmed about the whole 3-D gaming idea.

Im not sure if its that I will have to wear glasses, or the high cost of the TVs required, it just feels a bit gimicky to me.

this type of technology is difficult for me to see the value of as I would need to make a sizeable investment before I could evaluate it.

maybe its because i have been playing games for over 25 years, but I dont see the ‘wow’ factor to 3-D gaming

  • ok after readin all of these commentz before postin which took me at least 2 hourz from needin too taka break of over haul from the lil kidz N hardcore NObody gamerz (since i am a sports guy FIFA all day errRRrrr itz da only thing dat matterz 4 true gamerz)and and the HUGH precent of maybe 80% xbox ownerz who log in here cuz we ps3 ownerz dnt really have time too post in any blogz with so much blueray gamin too do YEA i guess u haven’t thought of dat wat i did their, i have too explain it AT e3 their simply gonna announce next monthz line of 3D tvz without shutter framez N plenty of surprisez too go wit ur 3D HD TV so ppl need too slow their roll for 2 sec. HOMIEz actin like dey knw da FUTURE up in diz piece

  • Now if there was only a voucher for a 3D TV with purchase of 4 PS3 games… Until than i will be gaming in the past generation 2D format with 5.1 or 7.1 surround.

Technology i guess is passing me… or is it that technology is still to expensive? Either way i got my HD games in boring 2D with surround… Im happy :)

  • tv needs 120htz for working 3d technologies!!

  • ya sure- then 3 years later you losers at Sony will take the 3D option back out of the options list like you did to our PS3s dual OS- no way, you won’t fool us again.

  • so are the games available to download for everyone or only if you purchase a bravia tv?

  • So I already own a Mitsubishi 3D HDTV and the NVIDIA 3D shutter glasses. Are these going to work? I already have TV hooked up to a HTPC and play DirectX games in 3D.

  • As someone with heavy eye dominance issues, I’d like to see or hear about some form of on-screen rendering of the 3D content. Whether or not it will require a special TV aside, I and I assume a good number of folks just can’t experience 3D via the glasses-based medium. I hesitate to mention the competition, but Nintendo claims or has the 3D experience coming sans the red and blue or vertical/horizontal specs. Autostereoscopy or some future lenticular solutions would be amazing.

  • i swear people you all are so aggravating it’s not even funny. You waste others time as well as yours B****ing and moaning about it being a gimmick or it being expensive or better yet, you think sony is actually dumb enough to renege on good quality games souly for the “ooh and ahh” effect you get from 3D. yea i admit the TVs are really expensive but so is everything else in the world that some people want like cars or ipods or just things. i mean really, do you not remember how much the hdtv plasmas and lcds were when they? for that time it was expensive and not many people hopped on the bandwaggon but they eventually caught on. the same will happen for the 3DTVs.

its a good thing i spend 700 on a vizio cause yes it would be a pain to by another expensive tv after just buying one a year ago but i can just give my tv to someone who needs it. so for the ones crying about it being expensive just shut up cause if you really wanted it, you will find a way to get it. and to all the other 3D whiners, why do we have to suffer cause you don’t want it? it’s like Roger and Ebert, nobody wants to see a movie cause these 2 guys said it sucked.

  • ok i have a 3d panasonic plasma ive down loaded the pacific rift demo and i cant get it to play in 3d maybe im missing something plz help?
Is this available in the US ive heard it was only gonna be available in japan until today i heard different.
if u know how to make this work pleaser give me detaILED INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO USE TY.

  • gslimjim98-

I thought the Blog was here for PS3 Gamers to post their thoughts, not soley those that you agree with.

    Am I wrong?

  • So where is this? I just checked and nothing at the PS store. Now I have to wait until after work >.<

@SCAR, can you see an option that says something like side-by-side? When that's on, you should be able to switch your TV through the settings menu under 3D to side-by-side.

  • You people hating on 3D are so closed minded. If things were left in your hands, we’d be destined to play sidescrollers forever. Open your minds a little and think where things are heading, it’s very exciting. But you, for some reason, want to stay in the past forever. What are you afraid of? People like you are infuriating because noone is taking anything away from you, yet you can’t stop whining. You are whining about things getting better, think about it.

  • Opinions are like a**holes. Everybody’s got one and everyone thinks everyone else’s stinks

  • 3D don’t you mean Stereo Vision which has been around since 1850?
    Stereo Views
    See also ‘Further Notes’
Stereo views became popular in the 1850s. The one below is of The Lord High Commissioner’s Procession in Edinburgh’s Royal Mile in 1858.
    Royal Mile – 1858 http://edinphoto.org.uk/talks/talk_edinburgh_university_2010_02_ethnographic_photography_in_scotland_page_02.htm

and in 1971 there were :
    http://www.stereocraft.com/

    Stereo-Matic 500
This is the only projector that will allow you to project your view-master reels in 3D.

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5646041&SRCCODE=GOOGLEBASE&cm_mmc_o=VRqCjC7BBTkwCjCECjCE

Now there is another thing Sony is shooting For.
Stereo Vision plus Motion sensing devices like camera, and controlers = VR(virtual reality)
I urge parents and older teens and young adults to do the research. I also urge you this technology is not new. It is only new in the way it is delivered.

  • Which is it Sony? is it the 11th? or 4 days from now?
This clearly shows the disorganization of this company.

  • So what kind of glasses do I need for the 3d Gaming?…I am confused..

  • you need stunna shades!!!

  • Just figured that I would point out that you can not enjoy the 3D if your PS3 isn’t directly connected to the TV. No routing through an A/V receiver, not sure about if it is an hdmi 1.4 receiver. But mine is only 1.3 and the play in 3D option doesn’t even show up. So I guess its either 7.1 surround or 3D.

  • I have a Samsung 3d tv and downloaded MS but for some reason it does not allow me to play in 3d. It has two options in the main menu “Play” and “Play in 3d”. The latter is in grey and cannot be selected. Can anyone help me? The PS3 is connected directly to the tv

    Thanks

  • I downloaded Pacific Rim 3D demo, but when opening splash screen comes up, I cannot select Play 3D.?? I have a Mitsubishi 3D tv and set to 3D mode. Any ideas?

  • @18 Not possible . its not the glasses or tv that produces the 3d image YOUR BRAIN produces the 3d image . The glasses and tv work together to present conflicting visual data to the brain in such a way that the brain resolves as a 3d image .

  • So no Linux?, but I can have 3d which only works on a Television WAY too expensive for me to afford? WTF!?!

  • Carlos_spicy8--o

i don’t have a 3d tv but i downloaded superstardust hd and the dlc and now i cant have custom sound tracks :( anyway to fix this? or any1 know what’s the problem?

  • !!! 3D HOWTO && MITSUBISHI/SAMSUNG 3D READY TV OWNERS !!!

Someone just confirmed it in another thread after having talked to several Sony tech support folks…

The following post explains how to get 3D working:
    http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-General/3D-is-not-up-and-running-yet/m-p/45756075#M4370187

Unfortunately, that post and the post that follows confirm that the PS3 does not output 3D Checkerbox format. This means it will not work with any of the Mitsubishi 3D Ready TVs released in the past couple of years – as well as any other television that requires checkerbox input.

If you are one of these Mitsubishi/Samsung owners, it looks like you will have to wait until the 100 dollar converter boxes ship later this month.

If you want 3D gaming now, play Jame’s Cameron’s Avatar on either XBOX 360 or PS3 as it supports checkerbox 3d format (they implemented it themselves).

Sony seems to be using this to make the big Bravia 3D push and not 3D in general.

  • Doesn’t work with my 3D TV. I have Vuzix 310 Wrap 3D video glasses that can handle Side by Side (cross eyed or straight), or colour coding over composite. I am not allowed to choose 3D from motorstorm demo, and the stardust demo doesn’t allow one to choose 3D options. So much for the promise of 3D if Sony won’t even support older 3D technologies.

  • Same here, it doesnt work on my Panasonic 3d tv.
    Wtg Sony

  • ^ It’s because they haven’t released the update for the ps3.
Plus you have to have a 1.4 hdmi cable, plus your tv must have an hdmi port, that handles 1.4 or higher.

There are some new 3dtv’s being produced, that you don’t have to wear glasses to see 3d.
There is a working prototype right now, but when tested although it actually worked the picture quality was low and fuzzy.
    But 3d worked without glasses.

Also i agree with mostly everyone here that 3dtv’s are very expensive.
a 50 inch led 3dtv is $7,000, so yeah really expensive.

  • The release for the PS3 is already out so I presume that it should not be the problem. My blue ray 3d movie works with the 1.3 cable as well as the channel that will broadcast the world cup so I also presume that should not be the problem.

    Any other ideas?

  • I just bought a Samsung PN58C8000.  I can not get my ps3 to recognize the tv. It picks up 1080p resolution but not 1080p3D or 720p3D.  The ps3 is directly connected to the tv with HDMI 1.3, thinking it might be my avr.  The ps3 firmware is 3.3 and it is not working. Someone dropped the ball (Sony or Samsung) because my setup should be perfect. Post back if you know what the hell is going on.

  • you killed my dog for this??

  • Any idea if we will be able to do an Anaglyphic mode for Red-Cyan and Yellow-Blue? That would be great; I just bought a BRAVIA ex700 32″, so I won’t be buying a 3D TV any time soon. :-(

  • If the PS3 really does limit 3D over the new HDMI spec (1.4), which is what it looks like, the rest of us (the early adopters) are out of luck.
For those with a 3D TV that doesn’t work, you need a 1.4 HDMI compliant setup, since 3D capabilities are new to this version. (3D *might* work in 1.3 but only in 1080i.)

    For details, see:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Version_1.4

Again, disappointing since 3D should be easy to add with a proper setting regardless of HDMI capabilities or component/composite cabling. Granted, HDMI 1.4 might make it less complicated for the user to configure.

  • I’m usually all about enhancing my gaming experience, but having to buy a new tv again isn’t very realistic for alot of people. As many have stated above most of us only have just recently purchased a HDTV, i wish i were as rich as sony thinks we all are…I wonder what sony is thinking when they do things like this, i mean this is as stupid as the pspgo
