Introducing thatgamecompany’s Journey

133 7

We are really excited to officially announce our current thatgamecompany project, Journey.

Journey - Bridges

The inspiration for Journey came from Jenova Chen’s feeling that in the modern world where man has so much power, we have lost an integral aspect of the human experience – awe towards the unknown. And we can see this in our video games as well. But don’t take it from me! Here’s Jenova to talk about it more:

In today’s society, man is powerful – We can travel at 60 mph; we can fly; we can connect with just about anyone, anywhere, at anytime. But on the street, people pass by each other ignoring the wonderful existence of other beings. We are overwhelmed by the attention needed to gain and execute our own power – just like we are in most video games. While we are doing that, we can become isolated and insecure deep inside our mind.

On the contrary, when we are hiking in the wild, we become tiny and weak again. These feelings make every other person we encounter much more important and enjoyable. We greet them, giving them genuine and useful help. We might travel together for a period, learn from and rely on each other. Struggling against the dangerous nature together, somehow, makes us warm and powerful inside. (This doesn’t make any rational sense, but somehow that’s how I feel. And I’m sure many of us do.) While most video games offer the sense of empowerment in the online gaming experience, we felt the player will pay more attention to the other players if they are less distracted by the power, and the online gaming experience will be quite unique if it carries the feeling of awe towards the unknown.

In a world where the majority of the players are distracted by technology, evoking a sense of awe and mystery could be very refreshing and powerful.

To realize these goals, we aimed to create a world that feels vast and somewhat unfamiliar. And so the game begins with a character waking up in a desert, with no clues as to what might have happened before or what will happen later. There’s only a tall mountain in the distance, beckoning the player to set out and explore.

Journey - Desert Journey - Motion

As you travel through the world, you may encounter a stranger who is on his or her own journey. But we don’t want to talk too much about the online experience right now. In part, because we really don’t want to inform your own experience of it; also, because we really enjoy seeing what happens when experiences come without explanation. But there’s plenty of time left for us to talk about it in the future…

Journey - Waterfall

One thing is for certain: we love getting to talk about a new project! It means that we can’t just navel-gaze about our own work anymore. It’s out there. You’re responding to it! And it also means we’re that much closer to getting the game into your hands. So we’d like to extend a HUGE thanks to everyone who has already expressed words of encouragement – they really do help!

  • I sort of don’t want this one to come out because that is the last one your contracted to make for the PSN :(

Yet I’m anticipating it so much…

Is there a projected release date?

  • Sweet! looking forward to getting this :)

  • holy crap!! I want to play! I thought this was concept art when I first saw it.. is this a full retail title??

  • Still haven’t gotten around to buying Flower, but I am planning on it.

This game though…it’s like they read my mind about what I wanted in a game. That sense of being small and in a giant, mysterious world is exactly why Shadow of the Colossus is still my favorite game ever released. This seems to evoke that same sense of mystery and discovery, and I will buy it day 1.

  • I, too, am sold.

  • Two questions, when? and how much?

    • Haha I think you’ve been following the blog long enough to know by now those questions aren’t answered until a game is MUCH closer to being release. Right now all we know is 2011.

  • Yes yes YES!! This looks like an excellent idea, love it! I spent a ton of time wandering the world of Shadow Of The Colossus and this sounds like how I felt as I wandered that world. Thank you SO much for your talent and work, thatgamecompany. You all continue to blow my mind. Can’t wait to see this game become a reality!

(*Ahem* Sony, you guys would be well served to give this talented group of people a ton of support. I think they really are on the cutting edge of what videogames can aspire to be)

  • I just want to join in with others here who have heaped praise for thatgamecompany and their games. I’ll be sure to pick up this one as well!

  • Welcome back…I’m happy that the game is one its way…sad that this might be your last exclusive title (it was a 3 game deal you signed right)?

Any chance you’ve made a deal for more?

  • looks brilliant…..I cant wait

Sold. Now I’m going to find out what I’m buying.”

I like your comment, Korbei. You were sold before they gave you any detail, and so am I. Jenova, your perspective was profoundly insightful and poetic. Kellee, from what I’ve seen in Flower, I’m confident that all of your staff at thatgamecompany are just as creative and open-minded as Jenova, and this insight into the human heart beyond the materialistic need to have power and wealth that encourages most games and even most game marketing campaigns is what sets you apart and above your peers.

I don’t know much about Journey, but I know I already appreciate the journey you intend to invite me on, and the unknown corners of beauty that it would reveal to me. Thank you for doing what you do.

  • the fact you guys are making it, is a must buy for me.. after the jaw dropping FLOWER.. and FLOW, you guys are innovation at it’s finest! You and Q games make me happy I own a PS3.

  • My money.

    It is yours.

    Very impressive.

  • Looks amazing

  • After flow, Flower, and Cloud, you guys could put out a blue ray filled with lolcats and I’d pay 60 bucks for it.

  • Day one.

  • Holy cow. You’ve done it again, Jenova! I love the concept of this, and I love the art. I can’t wait to learn more and to actually get to play it. Flower has gone down in history of as one of my all-time favorite games, heck one of my all-time favorite anythings!

Sony, you’ll sign another contract with thatgamecompany for more exclusive games after this one, if you know what’s good for you!

  • Why wasn’t this at E3?

  • You guys have the greatest imagination in the history of gaming. REALLY!!

  • Want!… no, NEED!

Love TGC games, can’t wait to try this one!

  • I can’t wait for this game! It looks like thatgamecompany might have another masterpiece on their hands! :D

  • I love this company and the beautiful direction they’ve taken games. I can’t wait to play this. And as a Dune geek it looks like I’ll have the bonus of pretending I’m Fremen.

  • thatgamecompany are honestly the best, most down-to-earth developers in the industry! Definite buy day one!

  • I’ve always wanted an online game that doesn’t just deal with “surface” emotions of anger, and empowerment.

I’ve been searching, even longing, for an online game that’s equally as emotional as single-player experiences. (Much like Heavy Rain)

  • Wow, what the hell? This looks incredible. Sony needs to acquire TGC already and give them unlimited funds to develop their games. Flower was nothing short of a masterpiece. When can we expect a trailer?

  • thatgamecompany is easily one of my favorite developers out there right now. This is a day one purchase for sure.

  • Instant buy!

  • you guys had me sold at thatgamecompany’s journey they made one of the most innovated games on ps3 i cant wait for this

  • thatgamecompany, you’ve done it again. I’m looking forward to another great game overflowing with beautiful scenery and an amazing musical score.

  • Im intrigued and after Flower i’ll prety much buy anything by ThatGameCompany without question! Day 1 purchase! I wonder if it will have Move support?

  • The first picture vaguely reminds me of Shadow of the Colossus, my favorite game of all time. But on ThatGameCompany’s own merits, I loved Flower, and even played Cloud a long time ago, and I’m sure that a unique game from them is not a ‘risk’ at all, but a success. May you guys get more critical and financial success than ever before, because you deserve it.

  • If you guys are making it, I’m buying it. And this concept and the screenshots are amazing.

By the way, my wife and I were thinking that Flower would look amazing taking advantage of Sony’s new 3D patches. I imagine it would add to the immersion of an already absorbing experience.

  • I’m not quiet sure what this game is all about, but if “THAT GAME COMPANY” made it,that’s all I need to know….SOLD!!!

  • I’m probably not the first one to think it looks like Love. Unfortunately that game is a mess and rubbish because the guy wants to hog all the credit and make it himself. Silly man. I look forward to this, but I do hope it’s deeper than past games. I know it’s PSN but c’mon, look at the Joe Danger. Full of amazing content and things to do for a reasonable $15.

  • Oh and it would be super sweet if you guys could give FLOWER some DLC :)

  • All I needed was to know thatgamecompany was making another game and I was already sold. And that picture sells it even more.
Thank you for being awesome thatgamecompany!

  • I love you so much, SCE. Please continue to help amazing developers like Media Molecule, Polyphony Digital, Team ICO, our beloved yet independent thatgamecompany, and countless others make innovative games despite risky goals and limited appeal. PlayStation has so many things going for it because it has so many amazing, passionate, visionary minds all around the world working to make beautiful games. This abundance allows your developers to specialize and it insures that PlayStation will always cater to every gamer.

Never change. I most sincerely beg of you.

  • I’ve been fortunate to have enjoyed flOw on PSP so far, I hope to experience your other games as well.

  • I can not say anything that has not been iterated in these comments in regards to the quality and feeling that goes into your games. I LOVE that you dont ever charge more than $10 for your games. Please know that TONS of people will buy your games Every Single Time. Thatgamecompany and Q-Games always have my money now. Because I can trust you guys to make Deep , Amazing games. I hope that you stay Sony exclusive so your quality stays. My most selfish hope for the two companies is that Sony just acquires you guys. But that may put limits on what you can do even though I think Sony lets there companies do their thing.

  • At first i thought, man this sounds like a great idea, and definitely agree with the modern society, but my second thought was….

People online are not the people they are in real life, so meeting some one online and hoping for them to help you or have fun together, well, thats very unlikely. Its definitely possible, but doubtful.

Hopefully you guys do something other than voice chat to communicate, as i dont think people will make the best use of it.

    Good luck.

  • If he really believes this hippy-dippy blather, why is he sitting indoors cranking out videogames? Shouldn’t he be sitting in a freezing-cold temple somewhere in the Himalayas living on melted-snow soup?

Or is it all just an image created to make some money?

    • He’s a creative person. He needs to create and share his perspectives with the world. And I try and make it so we can enjoy his games for as long as he wants to make them. =)

  • TGC you already have my money on this for the artstyle, just give us a date.
The concept to offer a new approach for the online experience by making the players feel the need to get in touch it’s a real challenge, I really hope you nail it.

  • Hey TGC, any chance we’ll see PSMove support added to flOwer? I think it would be a good fit.

Also, Journey sound really interesting I can’t wait to check it out. :D

  • i don’t know what everyone else is saying, but this game reminds me very much of “le petit prinz” or “the little prince”. So lonely yet content. I love the art direction shown in these images, and hope there will be gigantic creatures or some kind of awe inspiring LIVING thing(s) within the game. Hats off, TGC.

    • Oo, haven’t gotten that comparison yet! I love The Little Prince, and can definitely see some parallels!

  • Looks beautiful. Want more !

  • @92 JimInPT

People don’t Talk or even Act the way they THINK. Never. And here is a blog post. Where he can type whatever.

  • So far i have loved everything that has come from thatgamecomapany so I’m gonna pick this one up as well and see what happens ^_^

  • Teh 0ld. Well, it is ;) But i absolutely love it and i will buy it day one. Thatgamecompany, you guys are incredible!

  • @#13: Move support for Flower has already been announced. It will probably be a free patch.

This project looks good. Knowing that the brilliant minds behind Flower are behind this, I’ll probably buy it as soon as I can.
