UPDATE: Thanks for all of the feedback. Just a quick update, 3.40 has been released. In addition, PlayStation Plus is now available in the PlayStation Store.

We’re thrilled to hear that many of you are excited about the five star rating feature. This feature is retroactive for all of your PlayStation Store activity, so you can jump into the store right now and start rating all of your past purchases. Look for a “Rate” button on the product pages.

The PSN App on Facebook is also live. You can find it here: http://apps.facebook.com/playstation.

Hi everyone, once again we’re adding new features to the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system via firmware update to ensure we’re bringing you the best, most comprehensive entertainment experience possible. PS3 system software update (v3.40) will be available soon, adding the PlayStation Plus subscription, enhancements to the connection between your PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts and more. Additionally, we’ll be launching system software update (v6.30) for the PSP (PlayStation Portable) system simultaneously with PS3 system software update (v3.40), adding PlayStation Plus compatibility as well as other new features.

We’ve gone ahead and provided a few highlights from PS3 firmware update (v3.40) below:

  • PlayStation Plus: PlayStation Network users will be able to purchase membership to PlayStation Plus; a new subscription service on the PlayStation Network that provides you with new options to expand and enhance your gaming experience and enable you to gain an exclusive set of features and content. Friendly reminder, all of you PlayStation Network users will continue to have free access to PlayStation Network’s unmatched and expanding suite of new and exclusive features while PlayStation Plus subscribers will gain access to an exclusive and expanding set of gaming features, content and functionality.
  • Photo Gallery: A new network based photo sharing feature is now available on the Photo Gallery. The enhancement allows you to upload, browse and comment on photos on Facebook and Picasa Web Album. You can also opt to share your photos between your PlayStation Network friends as well as print photos from Photo Gallery.
  • Video Editor & Uploader: Video Editor and Uploader is a new function found on the XrossMediaBar (XMB), which enables you to edit, save and upload video files stored on the PS3 system to sites such as Facebook or YouTube.
  • Five Star Rating Support: Users can rate the PlayStation Store content they have purchased with one to five star ratings.
  • Power Save Settings: The default setting for PS3 System Auto-Off will be set at 2 hours, providing you with additional power save options and further improving power save features on the PS3 system.

In addition to the latest features introduced in PS3 system software update (v3.40), a separate, new PlayStation Network application on Facebook.com will be made available. This builds upon what was previously launched with Trophies and the ability to publish purchases from the PlayStation Store. Now you can further integrate your PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts with this new application. The application allows you to display your PlayStation Network profile on your Facebook account, find out which of your Facebook friends have a PSN account and send them a PlayStation Network friend request, view your PSN friends’ online status and add the PlayStation Network application tab to your Facebook user profile.

  • For facebook, i wanted trophy/psn purchase announcements to be made visible only to people who were on a particular facebook list (i.e. people who would not be annoyed by the ps3 wall posts), i suggested this on PS share, but they never passed it through the screening process. Go figure

  • Good call 187:)

  • #185. Wrong.

  • While this is a great update, in order to keep the PS3 evolving, it does seem kind of strange with all the comments posted that it’s not really what the majority of users has asked for.

Are people really asking for the ability to be more in line with Facebook and YouTube? It seems to me that a lot more people would want Netflix integrated, or cross game voice chat (the latter I personally care nothing about).

I just know that I have not used any of the new updated music features and don’t plan to use any of the updated video features. I do, however, like that we’re getting a rating system for the PSN.

So I still look forward to integrated Netflix, and I wish that the auto update was not exclusive to Plus. I just might get Plus anyway so that’s not a big deal but does seem kind of unfair.

  • Really neat update! Looking forward to it!

  • awesome!!!!!!!!!! thats all i have 2 say

  • Clearly the video editor is not (only) for editing recorded videos from games, but if you’re importing videos from your camcorder or camera, you’d want to be able to edit those videos and upload to youtube from the ps3. Neat idea.

  • First time poster, long time reader. Just wanted to say awesome job, it’s nice to see the PS3 moving in the right direction. I never thought I would pay for extra content but have to say that I am throwing $50 at you when PSN+ comes out.

    Great Job!

  • We’ve gone ahead and provided a FEW highlights….

    Meaning there is likely more……

  • @201 GTFO

  • this update rocks thank you sony!. the part that i like most is the youtube feauture.i also would like to know if you can download vids as well?again thank you for this cool update :0

  • enhance the gamer card on my PS3 to have facebook/psn functionality accessed from my ps3 not my pc and that will be the shizz

  • Everything is half backwards lol. copy music cd’s no cd cover to upload. Get netflix, have to use a disk. Have message boxes, but can’t leave voice message. Have a voice chat area, but can’t use it while in game. Maybe one day all these odds and ends will be tightened up.

  • If you could upload multiplayer gameplay footage from your favourite games with the video editor that would be great. . . . .but as it is. . .I have to ask. . .what in the name of God is the point?

  • BRING IT!!

  • why not custom avatars with a report feature to flag inappropriate content.

  • Please respond to this.

Why is it you never give updates that support gamers? The things we want like Cross game chat a better in game XMB and normal XMB you don’t give us. Since 2.40 not one update has did a thing that interests me. Again I feel as a hardcore gamer you are leaving what we want out. Worst of is you give no kind of timeline or confirmation that anything we care about is coming.

  • @157 Ok, you have adult ADD but yet talking would be distracting…Would be a good rebuttal if it was believable.
Reasons people vote down on XGC:
1)No friends! Try to make everyone else miserable because of it…
2)They usually play solo! And again, for some reason, want to make everyone else miserable!

Honestly, why would you vote down on it? So they add the feature, dont use it. Let the crazy amount of other people who do want it use it daily.

Its better than a new photo gallery…

To everyone bashing people who want XGC, screw you…Its not our fault they let us vote on features that should be added and XGC has been #1 since like…forever…but they just ignore the blog.share anyway…

So again @157, i dont think you have much merit telling me to get a 360, when its Sony’s fault that people are complaining.

  • Solid-Snake-Eyes

New features are always welcome, this is something I really love about Sony. Always adding new functionality to the PS3 and PSP.

  • I think it’s really irritating that only Master Accounts can link their PSNs to their Facebook and only Master Accounts can purchase PlayStation Plus. I really don’t want to lose ALL of my personal downloads, trophies, etc just so I can do that.

  • Finally PlayStation Plus Love You Sony And PlayStation Staff lol :P

  • At last the PS3 in Canada will do everything the rest of the world allready has.
    PS3…it almost does everything……bar cross game chat…mwahahahaha

  • I hope this means I can upload gameplay X_X
A couple of suggestions for next update though

    – Create groups in friend list
    – Add nickname to friend list

  • Wow, video editor looks great!

Thanks for all the free upgrades!

  • The video uploader things sounds great! I do youtube videos so this update is very appealing. Any word on any XMB stabilization updates or faster loading times?

  • No Wonder sony ps3 didn’t announce it at E3 because it’s a stupid update…what about New Xmb i’m so sick in tired looking at this old xmb since 05 when i first got my psp follow on to the ps3…i mean i’m starting to believe that ps3 can’t get anymore update to change the interface or to add innovated feature…i mean i feel that the ps3 is dying i mean i understand that sony try to make his console last ten years but i’m getting fed up of the same feat..i don’t care about cross chat so i know i won’t be getting ps+ since that’s the only decent feat that it has..in order to pay 50 bucks u have to make new partner cause i’m not paying 50 bucks for some minis and demos that’s just absurd.. i understand you losing money but hey listen to what we ask for..like putting new ps store is not going to make me buy anything new…i dont care about photo and video editing because we already have one for the ps eye..new stuff not improve old stuff…like start video renting subscription with qriocity and i can finally cancel my garbage netflix subscription…u stuff that makes us excited and proud to be a ps3 costumer …

  • Pretty awesome update.

  • What about Flickr? Will you be adding support to Flickr too? (since you’re using Flickr to host Playstation Blog screen shots.)

  • Another good looking update. I might try PSN+ out in the future if I hear more about it. As for the video editor, I do have a question. I remember hearing about GT5 being able to upload replays to Youtube. Would it be possible to maybe export the video from the game instead of upload it, edit it up into a highlight clip or something like that, and then upload it to Youtube? It seems like a great feature for racing and sports games.

  • Awesome Facebook features! I am about to deposit my funds so I can sign up for this tomorrow. :D I hope years from now you will award early adopters with cool unique avatars or something. :P

  • ThreeLeggedFreak

5 star rating system is a HUGE step in the right direction. Thanks. For that I rate this update a 5.

  • What is everyone’s deal with wanting cross-game chat? Why would you want to talk to people who aren’t even playing what you’re playing? I can’t imagine they would end up being anything other than a distraction. It doesn’t make any sense to me.

Beyond the confusion of a useless feature,

Looks like a great update. Can’t wait.

  • Have SONY said what are the first batch of free games that you are getting if subscribe to this service?
How can they pretend that someone if going to pay for this day 1 when we don’t even know what we are getting???????

  • It would be awesome if, with a future update, the XMB web browser becomes actually useful. You know, with exciting new features as being able to post comments on Facebook and/or YouTube, listening to internet radio stations, or rendering properly any given Wikipedia page. Just saying.

  • what about the flass player and divx player is that ever going to be updated???? love the new update but im still waiting on the flash and divx

  • Its About Tiiiiimeee!!!! Now Improve The Ps3 Browser. :)

  • How soon is soon?

  • …Where’s cross game chat?

  • Enabling 3D Blu-Ray should be much much much more important than this garbage.

  • @236 comes with PSN+

  • Wow… an update that actually adds new feature!?

Neat! Too bad there’s no cross-game voicechat though :/

  • @hamma11

Didn’t see that on the list of features for PSN+ on the blog post.

  • LOL, OMG.. SERIOUSLY?? Sony is soooooooooo clueless. They keep giving us these completely STUPID USELESS features like video editing and uploading… WHO EVER ASKED FOR SUCH A STUPID FEATURE? That’s such a great idea because I’ve always been dying to edit some stupid videos that I have on my PS3’d hd and then upload them to youtube? Come on seriously.. What is wrong with everyone at Sony????????????????

Cross game chat is the ONE feature that has been demanded for PSN for years now and you guys waste time on stupid MEANINGLESS features such as video editing and uploading? Sorry Sony but you’re doomed to failure because you guys are just so completely out of touch..

  • Video Editing?! Really?! Sweet. Now I just need an iPhone 4 and i can edit videos anywhere/anytime lol

  • WHere the hell is cross game chat. This useless crap is non-important.

  • Woho this sounds epic, cant wait

  • XScreamingEagleX

    sweeeeeeeeettttttttt!!

    nothing for Flash Support :(

  • Please give us Netflix in the XMB and update the web browser. It is ridiculous that that XKin can do more and the PS3 is suppose be technically advanced.

  • I’m salivating already….

  • Video Uploader YES! Thank you!
