Next PS3 Firmware Update Adds PlayStation Store Recommendations

658 0

Hi everyone, the next PlayStation 3 (PS3) system software update is coming soon. Firmware update 3.41 will add recommendations for games and videos on PlayStation Store. When you’re browsing through the details of a particular title, you’ll see a new “You May Like” section on the right-hand side. This section lists additional items based on the purchases of other PlayStation Network members who have purchased the item you’re currently looking at.

You can then click on this section to zoom in on the list and scroll the recommended titles.

system software update 3.41 recommendations

This feature is a great way to discover new games that you may not know about, and it’s another step toward making the shopping experience easier and better for you all — similar to the five-star ratings feature we added in the last firmware update. Please note that while the 3.41 update will be released shortly, the recommendations feature on PlayStation Store is slated to go live by the end of July.

In addition to this PS3 update, the next PSP (PlayStation Portable) firmware update (v.6.31) will be coming as well. This is a minor update, and system software stability during use of some PSP format software titles has been improved.

As always, we look forward to your feedback.

Update: For those users who are replacing the PS3 hard disk drive: We have been aware of the symptoms with the system software update 3.41, released on July 27, and that it will cause the update to stop in some occasions while replacing the PlayStation 3 (PS3) Hard Disk Drive (HDD) if the PS3 system is installed with version 3.41.

To resolve these symptoms, we have released a new version of system software update 3.41 with a very minor change (the version number does not change) on August 2nd. If you are experiencing such symptoms when replacing the HDD of your PS3 system, we kindly ask you to use the latest data and try again. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, and appreciate your understanding and continued support.

  • Please add a feature where we can have auto dynamic themes every time we boot up our ps3.

  • Still wish we could leave fb statuses instead of only being able to interact with the site through the picture gallery, this new update seems like a huge waste of time….

  • I hope the update has fixes that are more substantial than this. Among them: a setting to turn trophy notifications off!

  • Would you guys ever release anything useful???

  • It does everything….

Except Cross Game Chat, PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility, Linux, etc.

  • Vote for SOCOM 2 HD!

  • while i can definitely see this helping the casual PS3 gamer find titles it on the other hand does not help me. I make it my business to know every item every week on USA, Canadian, Australian and European playstation store. i know whats there and i buy what i like but i think it will be helpfull to alot of gamers. good job guys.

  • It’s nice to see all of these small updates, but recently announced ratings and now recommendations are features that should have been available long ago. Announcing an update with recommendations as a headlining feature is embarrassing for the platform.

  • senseless update

  • How about updating Other things first…I Don’t even go into the PSN store for anything but i guess its good for the people who do

  • i wonder what people are going to talk about when cross game chat finally releases..

  • This FW is probably just a guise to patch some new exploit.

  • I’m not one to really keep asking for XGC, but I am starting to really wonder why it’s still not a feature?

Are you guys cranking out some sort of fleshed-out party system that includes the features, as well as invites and game launching from the XMB?

I would love to at least hear a solid answer instead of “we’re looking into it”, which I’ve been hearing for years now. I mean, just last week I had to go and personally email a developer about trophies and custom soundtracks on a specific game and they told me that the soundtrack feature just can’t be done due to “legal reasons” or something. Why having we heard anything like that from you guys?

  • BIG BROTHER. No, I do not like this update… haha, just kidding, there’s nothing wrong with this. I just wanted to act like a fool. Also, first pic, “you may like: The Last Guy.” That game doesn’t get nearly enough love.

  • Good to a update is coming, don’t care it is good or bad, cross game chat is not a must need, guys go to 360 if you guys want it so bad jezz…

  • custom soundtrack for games

  • Wow. Epic update Sony. PS3 has been missing this feature for so long.

  • well a real recommend function so you can actually recommend a game to a friend.

  • CROSS GAME CHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Please add bluetooth stereo support for music, movies and games!

  • Crrrrrrrrrrrrrroooooooooooooooooossssssssssssssssssssssss ggggggggggggggggggggggaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaammmmmmmmmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee ccccccchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatttttttttttttttttttttttt!

  • Does the PSP update fix the v.6.30 GAME folder bug?

  • Yeah um not even the littlest amount enthused about this. I feel like what Trixzter7 said. We don’t really care about recommendations….to put it simple. Now what about making game sharing easier. Instead of needing to having to exchange account info with security risks, why not have it so that we can simply “gift” games/DLC without hassle.

  • i like it!

  • NEED PSP LOVE!

MEDIA GO PLUS+ or something to help move my UMD games into a memory stick! i’m sure someone can write the program/code. OR, an address to send UMD games to be transferred into my Playstation Plus Account to download the actual game, and re-cycle the UMD discs, because SONY is socially responsible that way. :D

  • hmmmmm its not the most amazing update…but at least its somethin, and who knows maybe theres more stuff they just dont feel like mentioning

  • eh kinda lame

  • >.< I appreciate all of these unnecessary updates but what about all the crap we've been begging for since day one? Especially know that I have PS+ where are the features that I can get on another console for the same price.
If Kratos wasn't so handsome i'd jump ship.

  • just a suggestion, but Skype would be nice to have on the PS3. Skype on the PSP was great, but on the PS3 it could be much better because video chat is what Skype is more commonly known for.

  • Joke? Are you needing money to do that?
Could you add something at least functional and not commercial? Auto sync for trophies is enough… Or better, PS Button – Auto Read Message Upon Notification #222, THIS would be GREAT.

  • Wow seriously people, they know you want cross game chat, or have you not seen the PS Blog Share? Sometimes some posters on the internet are worse than children..

  • another lame update..SERIOUSLY..SONY..either CROSS CHAT or in-blueray texting..somthing that will make our communicating process a bit more convenient :p but again..all you guys that are BEGGING for Xgamechat..remember BOXHEADS PAY for their service..WE DONT..so..if u want that..and im sure they are working on it..THERE WILL BE A FEE..kinda sucks that PSN+ didnt come with that..i wouldve bin on that wagon the first day nd im sure all your BEGGERS wouldve too :P

  • Ok what a lame update first thing I don`t no but ….ya lame updates no 1 will get ps+ if no cross game chat woooooooooow ps3 you guys kills me c`mon man the most important feature is left out AGAIN

  • NOW THIS IS A SELLING POINT! YOU MEAN WE CAN ACTUALLY FIND GAMES WE LIKE BY HAVING YOU ADDING THIS FEATURE! O M G W T F B B Q

    You suck.

  • is this update mandatory? its 160mb for a small feature because each firmware update is all previous updates not a small patch

if this is all it adds i’ll wait to download another 160mb when cross game voice chat is released in 2012 or when EA says you’re allowed

  • CROSS GAME CHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • BIG ?? Is this a mandatory update for our PS3 to go on-line? An hour downloading this over a sloooowwww internet connection for my PS3 to get back on-line! I think this update could have waited.

  • Sounds like a huge waste of time, but it’s more than I was expecting.

  • Don’t you guys get it? Sony isn’t going to update with big updates like cross game chat and .mkv support. They’re going to have all those in the new Playstation 4. Sure the Playstation 3 is fully able to update to these updates but Sony just wants to milk us for all we got.

  • I hate freaking pausing a game to chat with my friends!!! It takes away so much from the experience.

  • When are we getting Pandora radio? Its such an easy add-on and would be great for everyone!! It would also be cool to have a search option for our media files…I have my music collection of a few hundred cd’s and music files on my PS3 and it would be nice to not have to always scroll through everything. Love my PS3 though!!!!

  • HairyToeKnuckles

    Wow! I’m completely underwhelmed!

  • What was the point of having a blog share website to help improve future ps3 updates when i have yet to see the most popular requested features implemented? This is a helpful and nice feature, though it seems more of a hassle to have to update my ps3 for something so small. I say postpone the update in order to implement at least 1 or 2 of the requested features.

  • Please don’t use purchase histories; use similar ratings instead. Amazon’s recommendations are often crap because they don’t weigh recommendations with ratings, so many people get suckered into the same bad purchase.

The Programming Collective Intelligence book makes things like this very easy from an implementation perspective.

Another request with ratings: I want to be able to rate items in the Games and Videos section of the XMB by selecting the item, pressing triangle, and selecting Rate from the context menu. Searching around the game and video stores to rate my previous purchases is quite painful, and this would make it much easier!

I hope there is eventually a fix for playing downloaded 24fps video properly. The PS3 always converts to 30fps, introducing judder :( I don’t have that problem with 24fps blurays; only videos downloaded from the PSN video store.

For everyone else complaining, I’m sure this update also includes some hidden PS Eye/Move gesture features.

  • Will it bring back Linux?

  • SCEA is a joke. Really? This deserves it’s own firmware update? So glad I don’t play on my PS3 anymore. Count on me not buying anymore products from you idiots in the future.

  • Meh, can’t hurt, I suppose. Though, how about making it so you can put things in your cart and save them for later (think Amazon.com). From the very first time I used the Store, I was disappointed to find that it dumps everything once you leave.
