PlayStation Move hands-on: Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition

At last week’s PlayStation event in NYC, I was pleased to see Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition make an appearance — complete with the new PlayStation Move control scheme.

I grabbed a PlayStation Move and a Navigation Controller and dove into a combat sequence several chapters into the game. Several details quickly became apparent:

Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition for PS3 and PlayStation MoveResident Evil 5: Gold Edition for PS3 and PlayStation Move

Aiming is much, much easier. I was able to pop headshots, even at long ranges, with impressive accuracy using the PlayStation Move’s reticule aiming. You move your character with an analog stick (via the Navigation Controller or a DualShock 3), then squeeze the trigger on the PlayStation Move to draw your weapon. Once your shot is lined up, you press the Move button with your thumb to fire the shot. Easy!

From what I played, the new PlayStation Move aiming controls will be a big help to players who had difficulty adjusting to Resident Evil 5’s default analog stick control scheme.

Knifing is easier, too. In the original version of Resident Evil 5, swinging your knife was a two-step process: you pressed and held one button to ready the knife, and another to swing it. But using PlayStation Move, you can “waggle” the motion controller to immediately swing the knife at any time. It’s handier in a pinch, and makes close-quarters battles feel faster and deadlier. It’s also easier to smash open crates and barrels to find those all-important healing herbs.

Reloading works through a similar process: you pull the trigger to ready your weapon, then “waggle” the PlayStation Move control to reload. These tweaks make the game feel faster and nimbler, freeing up precious seconds during heated combat sequences.

Chris and Sheva are more maneuverable. By shifting the run button to the left-hand Navigation Controller (or a DualShock 3), Resident Evil 5 frees up your right hand for aiming and knifing. This has a liberating effect on the game’s pacing by encouraging more hit-and-run tactics — a must when battling tough bosses such as the chainsaw-wielding Majini. Much like the other enhancements to the PlayStation Move control scheme, this makes playing Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition a nimbler, easier process.

Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition for PS3 and PlayStation Move

If you already own a copy of Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition for your PS3, you’ll be able to download a free patch close to the launch of the PlayStation Move (September 19th in North America) to enable the new motion-control scheme. This will only work with RE5 copies labeled “Gold Edition” — the original version of RE5 won’t be receiving the patch, for technical reasons.

Moving forward, all new “Gold Edition” versions of Resident Evil 5 that hit store shelves after the launch of PlayStation Move will come with PlayStation Move support included on the disc. Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition also comes with all the DLC add-ons, including the new “Desperate Escape” and “Lost in Nightmares” scenarios, as standard features.

Have any other questions about Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition’s new PlayStation Move control scheme? Ask away in the comments and I’ll see what I can dig up.

  • Cool! I guess I wont have to be waiting to get the Normal Edition.

Thank you for the Heads up.

  • Awesome! Can’t wait to pick up this game this fall! I played it once already, tho I never finished it. Looking forward to actually beating the game this time.

  • any plans on a ps move n game bundle you do know some people have the ps eye already

    • You can buy just the Move itself, but at this time there’s no included game. I’ll let you know if I hear anything different!

  • Too bad the patch won’t work with the normal edition, but I won’t get the game again just to try the new controller schema.

  • Aww man.
I would’ve loved to use the PS MOVE to finish up the rest of the trophies but I only have the original version of the game -_-

  • booooooooooo i want in normal edition I ain’t paying for the game again for this.

  • I’m pretty upset that I can’t play my normal, midnight launch purchased copy of RE5 cannot use this feature. I paid the full retail price for this game, and yet, those who waited for RE5: Bargain Edition are the ones getting the Move support. It was honest to goodness one of the only reasons that I wanted to get Move at this time. I now will not be getting Move for a while after it comes out, if at all. I love RE5. I really do. I have beaten it many many times. But I am NOT buying another copy of the game just to play it with Move.

  • I apologize for the messed up first sentence. My grammar mind escaped me for a moment.

  • Sid can you tell capcom to update regular version, I’m not buying the same game since I already invested with add ons on the original.

    • Sure, I’ll pass it on. But from what I was told, the issue here is technical in nature. The early versions and later G.E. versions have some pretty different code, with the G.E. being developed with future support for Move in mind.

    • Hi guys,

I have a pretty detailed answer so this may take two comment posts.

This is Joveth Gonzalez, one of the community managers over at Capcom. We’ve been keeping up with all of your comments and I just wanted to address the issues at hand, especially regarding the original Resident Evil 5 and PS Move compatibility. Sid hit the nail on the head with his explanation, but allow me to go into a little more detail.

The original PS3 Resident Evil 5 blu-ray disc does not contain Move compatibility because Move had not been announced or made aware of at that point in time. The Move controller requires additional memory resources, of which none are available in the regular version of Resident Evil 5.

However, when Resident Evil 5 was being remastered as Gold Edition, our R&D group was made aware of Move technology, so they re-balanced the memory resources to allow Move support to be patched in at a later date. (end part 1)

    • Part 2!

We understand that there are a lot of early adopters who would like to have access to this functionality, and we at Capcom would provide it if it were technically feasible. The best we are able to do is provide the patch for free of charge for Gold Edition, or else we wouldn’t have been able to bring the new control scheme to North America and Europe all together.

We’re always open to questions and feedback, and you can always send me a message over on Capcom-Unity.com. Just look for jgonzo (that’s me).

      Thanks for your time.

  • That’s also worth saying, Mercenary!

I also bought Versus, Lost In Nightmares, Desperate Escape, AND costumes for the normal game. This is just ridiculous

  • Wait…so PlayStation Move support is ONLY compatible with Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition? Not the original Resident Evil 5 that was released on March 13th of 2009?

  • I would love it if Capcom released RE4 and RE5 together on one disc!

  • why so long for the patch i won that house party contest and get my move in two weeks how long for other games like mlb 10 and tiger woods 11 get the patch or any games

  • The RE team is seriously inept.

How is the trigger button not the trigger? That’s what it’s for.

Does no one express these kinds of concerns in Japanese? I understand they’re ignoring us stupid anglos, but someone’s gotta be able to set these people straight in their own language.

    • You know, I thought the same thing at first, but it’s actually quite comfortable and natural feeling.

  • Very interesting but i’m not buying the gold edition, patch the regular edition, thats it

  • If you got the original disk but you brought all the DLC from the PSN, can you download the PSmove updated and be able to play with PSmove controls?

  • Same game? better be $19.99 if not then its because of scams like this more and more people will start pirating. The gaming industry has turned into crap. You guys just rob peoples money and complain. Hope it rotts!

  • I’m sad, I cant play awesome shooters like this. I am a disabled gamer, so the Nav controller is a No Go. Why didn’t you guys put a D-Pad on Move? The D-Pad would have been a smart Move(see what i did there) Maybe a future model will have a D-Pad, but for now I will still buy Move, but not for those games. )=

  • “This will only work with RE5 copies labeled “Gold Edition” — the original version of RE5 won’t be receiving the patch, for technical reasons.”

A tiny line inside a everyday news piece makes all the difference.

This is some ridiculous news for users like me, who spent 60 bucks for the original game plus some more for the DLC episodes. I could have saved some serious money if I´d known this before.

This is totally dishonest with loyal Sony and RE5 customers.

  • I’m not buying the game a second time for Move support. Seriously you should reconsider finding a way to get it implemented. Far more people have the regular edition than have the gold edition and have already bought the addon packs making it a far more logical choice than alienating a larger group to give an add on to the smaller group.

  • Look… the Move is trying to distinguish itself from the Wii. So Why use words like *waggle*? you advertise the ability of 1 to 1 accuracy and pinpoint movements, but them you advertise, actually advertise the ability to waggle! it makes no sense, and really shows that you haven’t figured out what you want your product to be

    • Yeah, I agree, I should’ve used the word “shake,” because that’s what you do — shake to reload.

  • No thanks I already bought normal edition, wtf was Capcom thinking? Patch the normal edition you greedy bastards.

  • Technical reasons, huh? More like money reasons, hm? Honestly, this is absurd. As a day-one owner of the collector’s edition of RE5, and a purchaser of all of the DLC, I’m pissed off. I really enjoyed RE5, and I was looking forward to playing it with Move, but no way in hell am I paying for another copy of the game and DLC that I’ve ALREADY purchased. Technical reasons…what a freakin’ joke. The agenda here is clear, and that’s to get people to re-buy the game. Capcom, you can patch the original game and you know it. What ever you put into the Gold Edition to make it technically able to support Move, you know you can put it into the original game; you’re just not doing it. You could at least offer a pay-for patch; a small fee to update the game to include Move support. But then you wouldn’t be able to charge as much, would you? Your agenda is clear, Capcom. We’re not as stupid as you think. As if it wasn’t clear enough, I’m passing, and you can be sure that MANY will as well.

  • I like the way my comment is in moderation because i complained about it only being patched into the Gold edition

  • Why are people surprised that RE5 Gold is the only one that’ll have Move support? That was one of the first things they ever revealed about Gold back when it was announced a YEAR ago. This is not a sneaky trick being pulled now after the fact to sell more copies of Gold. Gold was always originally meant to be a Move-compatible upgrade for RE5.

I’m also kind of curious why some people are complaining about move not controlling like a d-pad. If you want to use a d-pad, why are you using a motion controller instead of a… d-pad controller?

  • I’m not buying this game again, it’s not that good. I have the release edition, patch that one.

  • This sounds more like an infomercial than a report

  • I have RE gold..Win.

  • Also, why do i have to waggle to reload? Sorry for the radical thinking but can’t i…Push a button? You’re always talking about how Move has buttons, make use of them.

    • It’s actually faster this way, you don’t have to fumble for a button — you just shake and you’re good to go.

  • I’d love to see Biohazard 4 in HD with Move controls…

Number 4 was clearly the best and scariest, as far as I’m concerned, 5 just seemed like a shoot-em-up, only slightly better than Age of Zombies

  • @fegui

The issue has to do with capcom, not sony.

    @Lirion
If they could of patched the first game, they wouldn’t have made the alternative/gold addition in the first place!

  • This game is going to be even better with Move support! thanx!

  • Will this patch also wave in 3D support?

I don’t own but have played this, would love to re-play with 3D and move support.

  • I’m a huge fan of Resident Evil, been playing it since the original. I loved RE4 on Wii, it was extremely fun and the controls were great, and when I heard RE5 would get Move support I was overwhelmed with joy.

But then I found out that only the Gold Edition gets Move support… what!? This is insane, way to take a dump on the loyal fans who purchased your game when it originally released. I’m not investing another $40 to get Move support for this single game. It’s not worth it, and nobody who would be interested in Resident Evil in the first place would buy it because those people most likely already purchased the original version.

  • I’m glad I didn’t buy RE5. Now I can wait even longer for the Move edition :)

  • Technical reasons…
Although I bought (pre-ordered) the collector’s edition, versus mode, Lost in Nightmares & Desperate Escape DLC I now have to buy the game again in order to access the Move update.
I love the RE series but that’s totally unacceptable.

  • Kinda sucks the original won’t get the update…I was actually looking forward to trying it out with the Move.

  • @26
Obviously you cant read well, you need to read the WHOLE comment. here i will re-post for you.

I’m sad, I cant play awesome shooters like this. I am a DISABLED gamer, so the NAVIGATION controller is a NO GO for me. Why didn’t you guys put a D-Pad on Move? The D-Pad would have been a smart Move(see what i did there) Maybe a future model will have a D-Pad, but for now I will still buy Move, but not for those games. )=

I took the liberty of capitalizing important things.

  • Capcom screwing over the original buyers as usual? /shock

  • You know what? I’m going to contradict myself and say they need to patch the original game. I mean wasn’t that the whole point of allowing games to be patched in the first place? If there was something missing in the original game, you patch it to add what was missing.

Not to mention people who own the original game might be at a disadvantage if the move controls actually turn out to be much better for competitive co-op(versus). It’s like the people with the “normal” addition are going to be at a permanent disadvantage.

  • I think its really dumb, that we that bought the original RE5 when it was released, doesnt get support on this controller.

I’ve bought every DLC for the original, and paid full price for the game DAY 1.

And now they try to make me buy another copy.

Makes me want to reconsider supporting DAY 1 games from Capcom.

  • I got RE5 day one and got all the DLC. I am sad that GE is needed for this. I might get it if I can get a good trade in on some old games or the price drops for GE

  • “Technical reasons” roflcptr, capcom = epic fail

Capcom seems to be doing everything it can to annoy its customers, Double Impact DRM anyone?

  • Does the Move patch also include any graphical or audio enhancements specific to the PS3?

  • Disappointing that gamers like me and others who bought RE5 on day 1 won’t be able to make use of Move support. :(

    Capcom patch RE5 too!

  • I’m probably going to end up buying RE5 now that move controls are supported, the regular controls combined with the level design and enemy AI made it a real turn off for me, this seems to make it much better.

But, even though i haven’t bought RE5 yet so it doesn’t affect me, I think it’s pretty crappy for Capcom to only release the patch for the gold edition, it’s not cool to leave out the fans who bought your game day one, at midnight even. Really that tells people NOT to go out and buy capcom games day one and wait for a better version, capcom did the same thing with street fighter 4.

  • wow capcom is seriously starting to piss me off with their horrible ssf4 costumes, unable to save certain game into usb/sd, crappy character lineup for mvsc3, and not thinking about the costumers that have purchased ALL OF THE ORIGINAL RE5 DLC for the move to not be compatible with. seriously use your heads capcom. stop thinking about your profits in getting rid of your gold edition and think about your CUSTOMER/FOLLOWERS for once!!!!!!! If capcom company listen to their consumers more you guys would MAKE more profit!!!

  • Upload RE5 GOLD on the PS Store Server… and all user with the normal RE5 Edition + DLC should get a free copy… problem solved.
