Coming to PlayStation Plus: Discounted PlayStation Protection Plan

230 0

Earlier this year, we introduced the PlayStation Protection Plan, an extended service plan for the PlayStation 3 and PSP system. This service was introduced to give gamers peace of mind by providing an additional one or two years of coverage on top of their one year limited manufacturer’s warranty. Some of the plan benefits include free shipping, no hidden fees or deductibles and utilization of OEM parts and service technicians…PS3 plans are now available for download directly from the PlayStation Store. However, in continuing our goal to provide PlayStation Plus subscribers with exclusive offerings and even more value to their entertainment experience on the PlayStation Network, we are now offering the PlayStation Protection Plan to subscribers for a discounted price.

PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to purchase a two year PS3 plan for 25% off (PlayStation Plus price $44.99, original price $59.99) Considering the PS3 one year plan is $44.99, PLUS members get two years for the price of one! In order to qualify for any of the plans, your PlayStation 3 must still be within its one-year original manufacturer’s warranty.

We are happy to continue to offer new features to the PlayStation Plus subscribers. With a little less than three months in the books, PlayStation Plus continues to evolve giving gamers an excellent set of content and features for their PlayStation 3.

Additional information on the PlayStation Protection Plan can be found here.

  • ok i’m just going to say what everyone is thinking, how about offering this plan to the sony fans who paid $600 for their consoles you know the people that believed in sony while everyone else was saying they were done. but no instead let’s offer the warranty to the people who stood on the sidelines and waited till we made it into the ultimate gaming platform with our ideas and suggestions. by all means reward the late coming bandwagon [DELETED] and not the loyal ones.

  • You need to be within your initial one year warranty, so unless you’ve purchased your 60GB console after 8/25/2009 then it is not eligible. Basically every single Slim qualifies as those launched 9/1/09.

  • how about giving us PSN PLUS subscribers something real good like the DEAD NATION BETA ACCESS!!!

  • Your protection plan continues to be pretty useless as long as you prevent any means of recovering the data stored on the hard drive from the old PS3.

You won’t allow restoring from backup data to the replacement PS3 you receive when your PS3 breaks. Ergo, the backup mechanism is quite useless.

This, in my opinion, is the most broken aspect of the PS3 right now. It at least doesn’t break often. But when it does break, you’re dead in the water and have to start over again from nothing.

Sony… when this situation occurs, you lose customers. Because it’s a very frustrating experience and having to start over again is a good time to consider jumping to a different console… as long as you’re going to have to setup everything again anyway.

  • Out of the box the xbox has a 3 year protection plan whats up with that sony i am already on my second ps3 and my first xbox

  • Still no PlayStation Protection Plan for Canada, right? Although it doesn’t matter anymore since my PS3 is coming up to the 1 year mark. Just have to pray for long life.

  • I have two comments to make, one positive & one negative, first the positive..

    1. Great news about the extended warranty reduction for PS Plus Subscribers like myself, I have the Slim & nearly got this last week, glad I held off, great reduction for Plus Subscribers, thank you Sony for that one, I’m also liking a lot the fact that it can be downloaded from the PSN Store, good job.

    Okay the negative..

    2. I am Plus Subscriber & have generally enjoyed the content, have some of the PS1 Classics been a little shall we say awful, yes they have, Rally Cross, Urgh, Syphon FIlter, hmmm, some of the Mini’s too were not exactly what I’ve been waiting for, but what I have been waiting for is the Dynamic Themes, we haven’t had a single one yet have we?, also where are our Avatars etc for the second month, we’re nearly into the third now?

Thanks for reading & good job again on the warranty, I’ll be getting that ASAP.

  • Eh, warranties are not what I bought PS+ for. I bought it to get free copies of games I bought months-years ago!

  • @#1. This.

    Also, DEAD NATION.

  • @ghostedsnake21 – They don’t have 3 year warranties anymore. (since the redesign)

  • My PS3 is well past the first year warranty… So this is of no use… How about you guys just give us a KZ3 or LBP2 beta already hu? Please?

  • @52 good points, I wish Sony would allow us to restore a back-up from another console or eliminate protected game saves or offer us cloud storage for saves lol The only reason I ever do a full back-up is for a few games like Fat Princess that are copy protected >_<

  • 80023102!

  • PS+ will give early access to select OPEN beta’s. As far as I’m aware there’s been no OPEN beta since PS+ launched so complaining is premature.

  • might have been interested but my 60gig is now 3 years old, I would love to be able to have some peace of mind for my console especially since my version is now obsolete, but this doesn’t help me one bit.

  • Meh, doesn’t help me as an original 60GB PS3 owner. The price is good tho. That being said Best Buy offers a 2yr plan for $79.99. Its more but if my PS3 breaks in that first two years I can walk in and get another.

As others have said you gotta do something with the backup stuff. I just upgraded my 60GB to a 500 GB and had to borrow a neighbors 80GB drive to store my backup on since I did a full backup. I’m not even remotely looking forward to finding a drive big enough to do a backup on my current stuff if the need ever arises for me to do that, especially since my console is getting old and YLOD could happen.

    Stop shafting us ;(

  • ill get plus right away when good free games and betas become available. mainly beta’s

  • Lowest rated post ever? Let’s go for that…

Also wanted to add to my earlier post that I’ve had to buy a cheap Blu-ray player so I could at least watch my movies while my console is down or somewhere in the mail and also to use the PS3 less and hopefully extend it’s life a bit for gaming and such. Thanks for that! AND Move is about to come out. Hard to justify buying all those accessories for a console that keeps failing on me. I just keep that next $150 bill in mind every time I turn the unit on. Why spend money on frivolous things like accessories when I have console repairs to save up for? Maybe a protection plan would help me spend my money on things like this more confidently.

And add to that earlier $1250 all the money I’ve spent on PSN downloads, which I’m not sure about, but it’s probably well over $500. Then add in your cut of my disc based software… you guys are bleeding me dry over here. :(

  • Hmm… so is this available in Canada?

  • This should’ve been included with PS+ for free. My system has already once YLOD’d and given enough time the $150 refurb I had to shell out for will probably do the same. This is just sad. :|

  • Wow, what a terrible “benefit” to try and entice people into buying a Plus membership. Then again, kinda par for the course at this point, amiright?

  • cool, TO BAD I HAVE A LAUNCH 60 GIG

  • boring my ps3 is already out of warranty…….how about giving Plus users good stuff like all the themes, avatars, beta access and etc that you guys promised. Random people are getting beta access into DEAD NATION….how bout getting us an invite

  • If My warranty sticker is slightly peeled is my warranty void

  • is this for US only? i live in Canada please let us know

  • I think that’s a little hard to take. $50 plus $44.99… Very hard to take indeed.

  • Grace can you guys add the option to support the PSP on Playstation Plus ? i mean i know im not the only PS+ subscriber who owns both systems ( PS3 and PSP ) , i really want more PSP support from you guys

  • @Thegodslayer
Yup same here. Sony is going to keep milking us early adopters with their defective hardware for all they can. Refurb warranty is only 3 months. That’s an enormous ripoff right there. And can you buy a new warranty? Nope. Only newbies can. What a money sink this system has grown to become.

  • I support this idea in theory, but I can’t really take advantage of it, since I have a 60GB. If you start allowing in on older systems, I’m in.

That said, I’m fairly happy with Plus so far. In the first two months we’ve received over $50 worth of games alone. Not a bad start.

Any chance we’ll see a DC Online Beta for Plus subscribers?

  • FAILURE!

  • I’ve got no problem with this except what’s up only being for the newer console users. I mean I’m in the category but seriously? There was really no point in this except to attract newer Plus subscribers…

  • Can the early adopters at least get a free inflatable ring cushion? It’s getting hard for us to even sit down anymore. I’m still hurting from the 60 GB refurbish cost.

  • Con.

Premium electronics should carry a guarantee to work correctly for at least three years. Not good enough.

13 month Scenario: “Sorry, your unit was built by Jimbo – he was hungover that morning – unlucky.”

  • Cool, more stuff my console isn’t eligible for.

When it YLOD’s AGAIN, that $50 goes to the repairman.

  • I need an extended service plan for my PS3 but is is over the one year mark. Please incorporate a plan for people such as myself.

  • this is not fair because what should the people do that bought their PS3 like two years ago and if i would be able to get the protection plan on my PS3 then i would do it even right now to feel safe that i would be able to get my PS3 repaired with out coughing up $170 at once for refurb PS3.

  • I would like to hear some reviews of the PlayStation Protection Plan since May 2010. Is there hidden fee’s for repair services, replacement or any additional cost? What is really covered?

  • man….total bs

  • What about the Plus subscribers who just bought the plan recently? Like a week ago. Good job keeping your supporters in the know, Sony. Really. Good job.

  • PLUS+ is the way to go

  • I would assume that they really don’t want Dead Nation’s flaws to be exploited by avid gamers who subscribed to PLUS. I gave you fifty for the Plus experience” and I usually hack on people who whine but this is getting ridiculous. I thought once there was more games coming out we’d start to see some action. First beta out *snubbed*. I won’t renew if this is the crap I can expect. Don’t forget how you get paid, Sony, off my sore working-class back.

  • I totally agree with Letters2Kay

I’m in the same boat. and also a PS+ member..waiting for my 3rd ps3 from sony.
I think sony should help us gamers with the older systems..

    (Here’s what Letters2Kay Commented….)
Plus Member, here. Also on my 3rd 60GB refurb (4th console, if you’re keeping track). Would be nice if this service were extended to refurb owners or even consoles currently out of warranty. Can’t wait for my next YLOD. Those are so much fun.

    $600.00 Original Console Price
    $150.00 First Refurb
    $150.00 Second Refurb
$0.00 Third Refurb (Sony paid- thanks, guys!)
    $50.00 Plus Subscription
    $300.00+ PS Brand Accesories

Total Spent on SONY Products and Services for PS3 alone: $1250.00

Don’t I deserve the same consideration as new adopters paying $299 for their redesigned (and more reliable) PS3s? I’d like to cover my system before it inevitably takes a giant steaming dump on me again. $44.99 is a lot easier to take than $150.00…

  • I’d buy this if you’d agree to fix my dead 60GB unit, Sony. It’s just sitting in my closet, all wrapped up in it’s original packaging, waiting for the day someone finally informs me that it can be fixed under this new protection plan, should I purchase it.

Until then, you should be ashamed of yourselves for releasing a device that essentially had a 2-year predetermined lifespan, as many, many people online will attest to.

At least Microsoft stepped up and offered to fix their mistakes at no additional charge.

  • Sony bad job, stop ripping us off
PS+ is horrible fire everyone that’s making up these dumb ideas

It’s times like these when I second guess buying a ps3

But if you actually give us some quality content in the next couple of weeks i’ll take this back haha

  • If I get an invite, and I’m wrong I’ll apologize. But they started being emailed out 15 hours ago and I don’t have one. Maybe you forgot me and 200 others when they were sent.

  • This is something that should be FREE to playstation plus users. We want more GAME/COMMUNITY FEATURES SONY.

  • This is something that should be FREE to playstation plus users. We want more GAME/COMMUNITY FEATURES SONY. I can’t even take advantage of this to begin since I SLEPT OUTSIDE TO BUY A 60gb AT LAUNCH, way to stick by your early adopters, honestly at this point I would say you should have just scrapped PS+ because it’s just pissing me off

  • what will be the price for the psp/pspgo? I would like to extend mine before the one year is up

  • Why the F are people talking about the Dead Nation Beta on a post about the Protection Plan.

As for those moaning about the Plan itself, do you really think a company will offer you protection for a product you could have had for over 5 years…especially an electronic product?

    Get real people.

And some of us got the PsPlus for more then just games. Good to see its being used for things that could actually save you some serious money…that could then go to buying some games.

  • @99 I agree wholeheartedly…stay on topic and happy about additional services…glad I got +
