Coming to PlayStation Plus: Discounted PlayStation Protection Plan

230 0

Earlier this year, we introduced the PlayStation Protection Plan, an extended service plan for the PlayStation 3 and PSP system. This service was introduced to give gamers peace of mind by providing an additional one or two years of coverage on top of their one year limited manufacturer’s warranty. Some of the plan benefits include free shipping, no hidden fees or deductibles and utilization of OEM parts and service technicians…PS3 plans are now available for download directly from the PlayStation Store. However, in continuing our goal to provide PlayStation Plus subscribers with exclusive offerings and even more value to their entertainment experience on the PlayStation Network, we are now offering the PlayStation Protection Plan to subscribers for a discounted price.

PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to purchase a two year PS3 plan for 25% off (PlayStation Plus price $44.99, original price $59.99) Considering the PS3 one year plan is $44.99, PLUS members get two years for the price of one! In order to qualify for any of the plans, your PlayStation 3 must still be within its one-year original manufacturer’s warranty.

We are happy to continue to offer new features to the PlayStation Plus subscribers. With a little less than three months in the books, PlayStation Plus continues to evolve giving gamers an excellent set of content and features for their PlayStation 3.

Additional information on the PlayStation Protection Plan can be found here.

  • I dont know i would rather have actual features for us PSN+ members. maybe the ability to change our PSN IDs??? come on

  • It’s funny that the people who would actually want an extended warranty (us 60GB owners) are the one’s who can’t use it. Sad. Makes me wanna cry especially cause my buddy who also “had” a 60GB no longer has it. YLoD. I’m scared for my friend Mr. 60GB.

  • @99 give me a break. You really think this is a good deal and not in actuality a kinda shady way to milk add on profit? The 1-year warranty PS3s come with are the first warning sign, what, they aren’t very confident in the build quality to offer better? Then their solution is to charge you additional money to fix something that shouldn’t break so soon? And then I should be happy because I can buy a ripoff warranty for 25% less?

    I know, I know, if you don’t like PS3, then don’t buy it…

My angst comes more from the fact I am a PS fan and want some reward for the loyalty and for not choosing the competition. Sometimes they make it really hard, they can’t possibly expect people to be excited over this offer. I want them to delight me, not disappoint over and over.

  • But… I bought my PS3 in 2007. Why no love for the early buyers, Sony? :(

  • I care about my data more than the hardware… even being an owner of a first edition 60GB model. Sony, how about adding more robust backup features to the PS3 rather than your archaic all-in-one backup the system currently features? Selective and Incremental options would be nice.

  • utterly pathetic Sony….. pathetic

  • ZOMGOSH!!! I’m so glad I bought Plus because now I get a discount on giving MORE money to Sony! Wowwww!!

  • I’d like to know if this is available in Canada and if you can give us back the same console so we don’t lose our locked save files. My original PS3 died of YLOD so as much as it sucks to say it I would consider purchasing the extended warranty for my replacement console.

  • does anyone know how long it takes to get your ps3 back from sony (my ps3 got the ylod) i sent mine about 3 weeks ago??

  • Of course, I checked the further info and it’s not available in Canada. If they don’t give back the same console I would use a local 3rd party shop instead, anyway.

  • A couple of concerns here. First all of us who still have the consoles with the Emotion Engine Chip or emulator are out of the loop so there goes our backwards compatability.

Secondly, this does not leave the warm fuzzy feeling with me about the current slim model. Is Sony basically saying that within 3 yrs of purchase the model will fail and you will lose all the content on your HDD?

As far as the PS+ goes the big demo that is coming is KZ3 but that won’t be until late November like it did with KZ2. I am more disappointed that the direct download of Infamous is $29.99 the same as the on the shelf retail. Where is my savings on that?

  • Wow… Sony, you’re really gearing up for a firestorm of complaints. Posting this worthless “perk” on the same day as the Plus content update?! Hope you have some thick skin.

I’m fairly certain I’ll be back on here in less than four hours to complain about the miserable selection of exclusive Plus content we will be receiving today.

Every week you make all of us PS+ subscribers look like idiots. Yes… we gave you our money after your promises of “content.” Since the first week, we have progressively received less content and lower quality content.

Can’t wait for Mushroom Wars… it’s like waiting to go to the dentist.

    Sad.

  • I have two ps3s, how does it work for that?

  • @103

What electronic product gives you more then a 1 year warranty without having to pay for a longer one?
What electronic product has a 10 year life cycle that doesnt require constant upgrades?

Now l dont know if Xbox does this kind of thing, if they do,more power to them.

You want to talk milking a product…just look at your Pc.

And where is the gun pointed to everyone’s head that makes them have to get the plan?

And before l hear more screams..l have an old trusty 5 year old Ps3 system, so the plan is no use to me..and l never expected one.
But for those new to the Ps3, its a good deal.

  • As a playstation plus subscriber I too am disappointed I wasn’t automatically let into the Dead Nation beta…they should have gone through all the pool of PS+ members before sending them out to regular PSN members.

Having access to betas was one of the main reason I subscribed to PS+. But now it looks like that doesn’t guarantee anything.

  • kids the closed beta for dead nation is going out and 45 bucks for two years coverage beats 150 out of warranty.

There has been plenty for plus people just stop crying when something comes out you don’t want.

  • I know a lot of guys aren’t happy about the service plan not being available to those with old PS3s, but, to be fair, it never was.

Sony are offering quite a sizeable discount to those who were eligible to buy the plan in the first place, nothing has changed.

I say, keep the discounts coming. This particular one might not be suitable for everyone here, I for one would like it extended to more regions, as I think it’s only available to the US right now… but it’s still nice to see discounts extending beyond those few titles that are chosen for us in PS+

I personally would like to see an across-the-board PSN discount for PS+ users. It doesn’t have to be much, but it would be nice to know that I can buy what I like, and get a small discount. Please consider this, Sony

  • Hey everyone welcome to the playstation community where no one is happy no matter how much sony tries seriously. Sony thank for this OPTION since i bought my new ps3 three weeks ago this will help me out big time.

  • Will these protection plans work with imported consoles?

  • @119

” FOR PLAYSTATION® PROTECTION PLAN: THIS SERVICE PLAN PROVIDES NO BENEFITS DURING THE TERM OF THE MANUFACTURER’S WARRANTY. “

  • I would rather have been guaranteed a Dead Nation beta code, but this is good for new ps3 owners…

I wonder how many PS+ members are new (within the last year) PS3 owners…

  • After asking repeatedly for the content PS+ subscribers were promised and signed up for, and being repeatedly ignored here on the blog, I’m not signing up for anything.

If my PS3 dies (btw, I’m on my THIRD PS3), Sony will be lucky if I don’t just go buy the competitor’s console. At least when you sign up for a service on their system, the deliver content as promised.

  • Another WORTHLESS feature for PS+ subscribers.

  • No thanks!

  • Just terrible idea not to include older models. Is it your customers’ fault you made a faulty product?

  • other than 1st month, getting nothing out of PS PLUS

  • When they announce something for plus that is actually worthy, I will sing Sony’s praises as loudly as everyone complains. I so can’t wait for that day. Please Sony, make it soon, like next week.

I’m tired of the Xboxers laughing at us and I’ve been given little to debate them with.

  • I hate how if your system is past the 1 year warranty you can’t do this….

  • Uh guys, why are you [DELETED] that you cannot purchase the product replacement plan on your launch PS3’s? There’s no way allow old PS3’s into the plan without it being insanely abused.

These plans are insurance, not repair costs for stuff that has already broken.

If you want to complain about Sony’s repair costs, or not being offered this 3 years ago fine, but you have no valid reason to expect to be able to buy the warranties now.

  • to all annual Plus members who will not want your PlayStation Plus account to automatically renew itself, Sony has that setting turn on by default, you may want to go to your >> PlayStation Network icon >> Account Management >> Transaction Management >> Services List, and look for PlayStation@Plus and click on it, disable it.

glad i checked, i’d be stuck with another year of garbage
    bunch of hypocrites

  • Both of my 60g PS3 are still going strong. I use them everyday and use them for movies and gaming. Iam sure I wont need the warrenty even though I cant use it. Thanks anyways

  • @115

How did you managed to get a PS3 approximately one and a half years before release date?

  • So what I am reading is … you usually have some hidden fees.

Is that what you’re saying? That you have hidden fees on this stuff but you can circumvent that business if someone subscribe to your PlayStation Plus service? Am I getting this right? It’s ensuring no hidden fees, whereas the standard business plan Sony has some hidden fees?

  • if this is today’s big highlight for today’s update .. this week is gonna be worse than last week

granted something is better than nothing but if my ps3 does go *knocks on wood* i’d rather just buy another 1 out right of the shelf

im startin to seriously regret passin up bad company 2 for a 1-year sub to ps+ .. seriously

  • this is by all rights somewhat of a scam. i have had nothing but problems when dealing with these people, microsoft, nintendo, sony when it comes to taking care of their consumers. what they need to do first and foremost is to be willing to work with the consumers, then have a plan for taking care of them.
as with all business the bottom line is how much money can they make without having to respend any of it on their consumers, which i guess thats capitalism for you, but they need to do something honest for a change.

  • This is so stupid. Discounted? How about free.

  • That is really pushing it…

Given the fact there is no other business case where a free internet based console gaming systems is now trying to charge a fee (and add new features) I understand Sony’s efforts with this change. I would applaud this initiative if it was in any way innovative, but playstation + as a whole is starting to look suicidal.

  • i had a 20gb launch model that died back in like feb 09 and i got a new 1 in june 09 so this incentive to ps+ is useless to me

  • wow not 1 bad word or any profanity in my previous comment and its still “awaiting moderation” .. wow why do i even bother visiting this site anymore?

  • EU needz this!
well actually, sepcifically the UK to be honest =P

  • Where was this plan when my first PS3 console succumbed to the YLOD?!

  • To anyone who thinks beefing about no beta doesn’t belong here, bite me. Where are we supposed to post it? Should it be on the announcement about the beta that was never posted. It’s all intertwined, a conspiracy wrapped up in an enigma deep fried in paranoia. This is the perfect place to unload. NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE!!! Justice=Beta

  • ATTENTION ALL CANADIANS!!!!!

You can already extend your PS3 warranty! It’s called Sony Care. I extended my warranty by FOUR ADDITIONAL YEARS!

    Go here: http://www.sony.ca/view/sonycare.htm

    OR CALL: 800-773-9667

The deal mentioned in this blog post does not apply, but it’d sure be nice if Sony would post about this here, so that Canadians STOP ASKING THE SAME QUESTIONS OVER AND OVER AGAIN. And hey, maybe Sony would actually make some money from it…

  • Im shocked how so many people on here can’t even read.

NO YOU CAN NOT BUY A PROTECTION PLAN IF YOU DID NOT PURCHASE YOUR PS3 WITH IN ONE YEAR OF BUYING IT.

That means all you people that bought a PS3 before 2009 (i believe) can NOT buy a protection plan. What is so hard about understanding that.

I myself had to recently buy a new PS3 slim after my ps3 disc drive finally died. I chose not to refurbish after reading all the complaints from those who have gotten refurbished ps3’s. Why pay $150 for a refurbished ps3 to only have a 90 day warranty, when you can add another $150 ($300 total) to buy a new ps3 and have a one year warranty.

  • Oh yeah to add onto my comment.

If Sony was to offer a Protection Plan that would end up making us pay only 25% cost of a brand new ps3 to replace the one that died with in the warranty, that would be a plan i would buy into.

  • Thx…it’s nice to have more options.

  • LOL no tks

  • Wow those of us that supported Sony in the launch days are now screw ed out of getting this. Instead you just give it to the new people instead of those long time supporters. I’ve just about had it with Sony.
But the best part is they don’t even stop there they say if you become a Plus member you will get first picks for betas then today they send beta invites for Dead Nation to random people who didn’t even purchase Plus.
So far Plus has been the worst waste of money I’ve spent on Playstation because so far they have only offered services and games that either I already owned or are of no use to me. I will not be purchasing Plus again if this continues and may even reactivate my L ive account and begin purchasing games for that system again since they at least know how to treat their customers.
