Coming to PlayStation Plus: Discounted PlayStation Protection Plan

Grace Chen's Avatar Posted by Sr. Director, PlayStation Store

Earlier this year, we introduced the PlayStation Protection Plan, an extended service plan for the PlayStation 3 and PSP system. This service was introduced to give gamers peace of mind by providing an additional one or two years of coverage on top of their one year limited manufacturer’s warranty. Some of the plan benefits include free shipping, no hidden fees or deductibles and utilization of OEM parts and service technicians…PS3 plans are now available for download directly from the PlayStation Store. However, in continuing our goal to provide PlayStation Plus subscribers with exclusive offerings and even more value to their entertainment experience on the PlayStation Network, we are now offering the PlayStation Protection Plan to subscribers for a discounted price.

PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to purchase a two year PS3 plan for 25% off (PlayStation Plus price $44.99, original price $59.99) Considering the PS3 one year plan is $44.99, PLUS members get two years for the price of one! In order to qualify for any of the plans, your PlayStation 3 must still be within its one-year original manufacturer’s warranty.

We are happy to continue to offer new features to the PlayStation Plus subscribers. With a little less than three months in the books, PlayStation Plus continues to evolve giving gamers an excellent set of content and features for their PlayStation 3.

Additional information on the PlayStation Protection Plan can be found here.

@190 TwinDad

LOL did I say I expected or wanted them to reply to every comment? Of course they can’t, I know this. This post alone has a few good questions that other users can’t possibly respond to. That’s the stuff we should see replies to.

I would be a PS Plus member in a heart beat if you offer better cross comunication tools, the ability to leave voicemails and respond , how about a message tone option when you get a message , how about a chat thats more like AIM with group ability and cross voice chat and party chat. Cross vid chat anything sony. I love your platform but we need a reason beyond cheap games to be a plus customer , i am holding back until better communcation tools arise if ever.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I bought a warranty from Squaretrade. My PS3 is covered for a full three years from the purchase date, and it only costed me $35. If your PS3 dies, you send it to Squaretrade and they Paypal you the full amount you paid, then you just go out and buy a new one. I’ve had to call in a warranty from them before (not for a PS3) and they really have excellent service. Why send it in to Sony and have them send you some refurbished piece of crap when you can get a brand new one? It also saves you from giving Sony even more money when all they do is rip you off anyway.

Too little too late, just got my 4th Ylod on sunday. Fixed it monday night. So glad I didn’t buy PSN+. Since all of us fat system owners get screwed.

Out of all things I really wanted… I just wanted something to protect my ps3… mines is a real sad story and I won’t even bore you. I’ve had my ps3 since 2006…. I am a RAP & RLS member… let’s just say.. I was really looking forward to this.. unfortunately it looks like you guys cannot extend that offer to us. I am not surprised… just disappointed. I don’t see why the newer Ps3 owners are the only ones covered by this. I understand that you may not wanna flip the bill for the cost because you don’t make these specific CECHAO1 Models and it would perhaps be costly. I think that if people who purchased their systems before the advent of the Ps3 Slim and can indeed show proof of that through an actual receipt with date of purchase they should be “grandfathered” in under the Ps PP. I would most definitely purchase it right away! Would you reconsider it Sony?

I just got the YLOD for the second time but this plan is useless for me because I bought a 40gb PS3 in 2007 which means i am out of warranty and not qualified for this protection plan. Make it available to me and I’ll gladly buy it for the normal price.

wow sony, a little too late for this plan. and again your disappoint us with no replies to this post. The same thing happen with PSN+ alot of questions left un-answered. This plan would have been great if it was released when the PS3 first came out. Sucks for me and others who have had the system since day 1.

Alright, wow…Warranties can’t go on forever. Simply put they are making a sound business decision. Imagine taking your car into your mechanic and demanding a 5 year warranty on a decade old vehicle? They’d laugh at you. Same deal here. You want a warranty on a 4 year old gaming console? Seriously? I have my 40 GB PS3 for several years now. No major problems (partly due to the good care I keep the console in). If it broke down after this time, I would take it as I got good time out of if and get it repaired.

Should mention that my PS2 is still running… It’s been repaired too. *gasp* Or should we all demand warranties for that too?

Honestly, from a customer service point of view, there is a saying which applies. The customer is not always right, but it’s not our job to prove it. Would you feel better if Sony pointed out how silly some of these comments are?

Some people aren’t happy unless they’re complaining. Did anyone really expect Sony to give new warranties to millions of out-of-warranty-and-possibly-already-broken PS3s? It just wouldn’t happen, unless there was a massive amount of hardware failure & they were trying to make up for negative publicity.

PS+ offers discounts on many things, & now that includes warranty extensions, essentially in addition to what we signed up for. Thanks Sony. It’s not for me, but I can appreciate how some people would buy it.

Betas, on the other hand, are still lacking even though we were promised that from the start. I know devs might have their own arrangements for handing out beta codes, but it’d be nice if you could send more to Plus members… & send more to members overseas. Many betas seem to be US only.

Anyway, to Sony, PS Plus is not a bad idea per se, but when you ask people to pay to be come something akin to VIPs, you should try to treat them better. Make them feel like they are special, and give them something to show off to their non-VIP friends. Animated avatars? Exclusive beta content? Small discounts of all PSN games? Or, my personal favourite, one hour trials of all full price PSN titles! Give us something so that we can say to our friends… “Ha! I’m better than you because I’ve got PS+”

Seriously… one hour trials of ALL PSN GAMES! I know you worry that we’ll just play trials all day, but it will increase sales in the long run!

Generally speaking, If you don’t buy junk, you don’t need a protection plan.

darkedgex said:

Come on Sony…. the people have spoken. Why should the loyal PlayStation supporters who bought the original fat systems be left out of this protection plan?

It’s so lame that you won’t support your product or stand behind it even if we’re willing to pay for that support…

ps3 owner since january 1 2007 i got it fixed once for 150 then again but for free due to the disc drive this is useless to me oh well

PlayStation Plus was such a waste of my money. We should have the ability to CHOOSE which games we get for free with our subscription! I already own everything they’ve made available, so now I’m being punished for supporting those games in the past like a sucker. Heck, I already owned the subscription to Qore, too. Any refund there? Nope.

Oh yeah, and that cross gaming voice chat is incredible…

Lame amateurs…

PSn plus is becoming a joke, every month the 1 theme, 1 avatar, and some cheap arcade game we dont get to pick? I am not renewing unless Sony really improves this and improves it fast.

Can’t they at least offer more avatars and themes? i mean really, come on. I gave Sony a chance with hopes they would improve plsu, so far its a joke, feels like they stole 50 from me.

The protection plan is good, but should be much cheaper besides the 25% off, or free for plus subscribers.

mastorofpuppetz said:

On top of this PSn is still far behind, no voice chat, no party chat, PSN needs an overhaul, faster dl times, auto syncing of trophies, etc….. Improve this soon or I am not renewing my Plus at all.

Suck it Sony. You know you messed up on the PS3 fats and they break just like the xbox 360. Atleast Microsoft stood behind they’re product and repairs em. Sony does what its always done since the faulty PS1, give they’re customers the middle finger and charge em up the rear for a repair that should be warranty!!!! YOU SUCK SONY!!!!

Do you have to buy the warranty wherever you bought it?

Wolverine8780 said:

My complaint has nothing to do with older ps3’s or slims or Canada. What I wanna know is … out of all things … I had every intention on buying your two year plan and I am a plus user till I read this said plan isn’t even availible in Wisconsin?!? Really Sony , c’mon? So what , I have to pay more to get my ps3 fixed if and when it does break? Thats just sad. Nice system , no complaints other than that.

Way to leave us early adopters out in the cold. Thanks Sony. I was still considering it, but after reading this I DEFINITELY won’t be sending you my 60gb that got the ‘flashing red light’ a week ago today. Yeesh.

riiiiiiiiight… because the “protection plan” is soooo fair when you consider that nintendo’s customer service is free and it’s FAR superior to sonys even with the plan. for example my psp 3001 broke while under warranty and with the plan, yet i’m still require to pay $90 to repair it just because it’s a cracked screen cause by sony’s design fail with the screen placement! WTF! both sony and microsoft need to really work on their customer services

Why do I bother Sony doesn’t read comments.

What a freaking waste of space. I own 5 original 60gb units, and one of them just YLODed. Does this crap cover it even though I’m a day one PS+ memeber? of coarse not. It’s a waste of time. Thanks for nothing!

I’ve been a fan of Sony for years. although I love the PS3, this protection plan is pointless. Like so many of us, my PS3 also died. (RSoD) I just go a new slim but I’m sure I’ll be replacing this System as well. Sony’s only using this as a ploy to avoid repairing the problem. Trust be when I say, this is a sgn of things to come
