  • what is this update for, i know it says extra security but.. what for?

  • @163 Feel free to do what you will with your console, but when you use it outside of the way that Sony intends it to be, don’t expect them to be ok with it and just let you do what you will.

  • @250 besides Fair play to Sony for making life hard for jailbreakers. both hackers and legit players suffer by limiting the abilities sony gave the ps3 it doesnt matter what sony does or what hackers do we all end up falling plus hackers our not going to stop and we all know that

  • @251 hackers have jailbroken ps3 so this is sony attempt to stop hackers on ps3. this is why ps3 is MUCH better than 360. PERIOD!

  • right, to all of you moaning that Sony are trying to stop Jailbreaking,

They’re a corporation, they make money, do they want to stop making money?…no, I don’t think so either, they’re GOING to keep patching the console to make sure it stays solely in their hands if theres any possibilty of the consoles games being pirated (inb4 ‘but PS3 has no games’)

I doubt there’ll be ANY sort of cross-game chat whilst they’re fighting a battle against potentially losing money to gaming pirates

I don’t particularly care if cross game chat is brought in or not, I really don’t think I’d use it to any great extent baring in mind that I’m usually online with friends anyway and most games on PS3 now have mic chat functions (some old ones still dont) and when I’m not I like to have music on pretty loud, the in-game music function doesnt really matter to me either as I have my PS3 by my computer

  • the link is broken for update details. i’m assuming it’s for the usb jailbreak. anything else?

  • With this speed, please give us hungarian psn too :)

  • it’s all good i dont care about these update’s you guys are expecting to much.
people need to stop thinking every update is what there waiting 4
dont wrry they will say sum thing 1st or have it in a press release so you will know months before they rilly come out.

  • If this is for preventing piracy/hacking, thumbs up for you Sony :)

    Here’s my idea:

In my opinion, just pure mind juice, Sony should do this: Have an automatic system in the background, which allows/not allow changes to the system being able to detect unauthorized changes to the system. Any unauthorized change will be automatically sent to Sony for further investigation over the network, or the next time the system is connected online. For pirated games, detect them, make it useless to online, and issue an insta-console ban. A few lawsuits for publicity won’t hurt either.

  • lol all you guys saying that hackers will find away around this are kind of late. I’m starting to like the 360 scene a little bit more now, you people are so snobby.

  • chyea, i’ll update over my dead body

I don’t care about hacking on COD or anything like that, those guys are tools. I just want some homebrew like oldschool emulators so I can have it all on one machine instead of my laptop. The PS3 is like a giant super computer that you can’t use, it’s about time people figured out how to do more.

  • @258 i agree. the community hypes up every update to the umptenth degree, only to be disappointed later when its not what they thought it would be.

  • @261 then why did you accept the terms of service and conditions of using the ps3? you should have returned the system to wherever you bought it, since you agreed to not circumvent the system’s security system when you use it. Children.

  • OK, we all know this update’s main purpose is to delay the PS3 Jailbreak by 1-2 days. But does the update do anything else as well? Sony could at least slap a new feature in for the sake of appearances.

  • @261 (alienjiz420) – Emulating old games is illegal. Why would Sony want to allow its users to do that or promote illegal activity on its machine? They’re not stupid.

  • The sheer magnitude of both SONY’s incometance and hubris is absolutely stunning. they continue with their policy of using bogus accounts for their own employees to openly attack and harass anyone who complains. The ignorance and unbridled contempt this company has for its paying customers is absolutely astounding!

Heres a hint for you. In the real world we live in homebrew is NOT piracy nor are linux users terrorists. To claim otherwise is to invite litigation more massive than the many you are now facing. It also destroys what little is left of your already worthless reputation.

Let me give you another lesson this time in economics. Sonys losses as a whole in fiscal 2009 were $441 million. Fiscal losses for fiscal year 2008 were in excess of $1 BILLION. That is an astonishingly huge amount of money to lose in such a short period of time. Such losses can easily lead to bankruptcy. Now ask yourselves this: is it wise to alienate those who keep you in business? These are not shareholders, CEO, CFO, COO or anyone in management. These are your customers who are your sole source of income. Since you cannot figure it out the answer is NO you can’t live without your customers. PERIOD!!

  • Do not forget theres another word for what sony is doing to us their soon to be former customers. Honestly theres several words for it but the least offensive is Cowardice. Dispicable certainly applies as well but it comes in a close second.

  • FormerPSfan…stay on your xbox and get out of here. you = epic failure! :D

  • Will this update Brick My 60 gig? also you cant stop the hxrs. I dont use any of that stuff cause I like to buy my games which helps to fund sequels to said games. HB on the other hand can be useful, It helped to sell many millions of psp and You know it did. I just feel it wrong to make it maditory to update to a firmware. It should be a choice. Heck the psp go still has HB running on it and a CF soon. We are living in an Updating Society, You update so do crackers, and so on forever.

I have even read that this could be done through the video cables that people use for sd tv’s. Now what then?
The HB scene has more dev’s (hundreds worldwide)working on this compared to Sony coders working on patches(maybe 50 total)….

  • I also find it hilarious how me not updating will prevent me from accessing the playstation store, and I do buy a lot of psn games so its sony’s loss and the developers loss.

@266 couldn’t have said it better myself, a company that doesn’t listen to its customers is bound to crumble to dust

  • @265 emulating old games is not illegal as long as you have purchased them at one time or another, which I have. i’d just prefer to do it on my ps3 rather than my macbook which has an integrated intel card vs the ps3’s awesome power and graphics

  • My original post was deleted. How nice of Sony to delete posts that do not agree with their stance.

I do not have a p3s jailbreak dongle, but I for one will not be applying this update. The PS3 jailbreak is still in its infancy. People are talking about “adding ps2 emulation” and other things. The simple fact is it’s just too early. Sure, thinks WILL happen in the home brew community. I imagine porting something like VLC or MPlayer wouldnt be too difficult. But PSGroove has only been out about a week, max. So, it will take time for apps to be written for the PS3. Time will tell, and I will abstain from updating, and see what comes of it.

  • @sarno1605: LOL seriously!!! stop acting like a 2 year old with a full diaper having a tantrum. Your behaviour is exactly why you cannot function adult society. If you cannot comment in a mature manner then you shouldn’t be allowed online unsupervised. Your a prime example of why the PS community is universally derided as immature beyond words.

  • Everybody talking about kill those hackers attempts and etc, etc I bet you if Sony never stopped that every last one of you would be riding the hacking train….. Then people say xbox this and xbox most of you are fake as hell

why even by the system and don’t say ” oh I’m a collector ” and other excuses y’all was hype when they had all these features and every update and little by little they take something away to give you something you don’t need.

Like on the web browser there is a security browser that uses trend micro it’s a trail run then you gotta pay for it come on now, the playstation plus has all the features we ask for f**ked up part is we have to pay for it so when the year or three month sub is up and you don’t want to continue the package all that stuff you bought on it will probably be useless. Sony just really need to pay attention to to alot of there fans and quite honestly they don’t care about you they want your money.

So now you decide if you gonna cheer them on for updating you with useless bs and lies, or you can write to the head honcho and give them your two cents

  • They already have a method up to go online and bypass the update

  • I support security updates! down with people who do not!

  • Thanks Sony for keeping our systems safe! :P

  • nice job on blocking the jailbreak/ps groove but it doesn’t entirely block it. there is a proxy tool that allows you to go online and bypass the hack easy.they are also releasing a new hex code for the ps groove device.so this update is a start but it doesn’t fully stop it.get back on this sony

  • Don’t update. FIGHT THE SYSTEM. VIVA LA REVOLUTION!!!

  • hey for people who changing hard drive you need to put “PS3UPDAT.PUP” into your USB dongle root PS3/UPDATE *folder
    like this: PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP

  • The best update to get so far.
Now I know my PS3 account is secure, Developers will still be making games for my PS3, Pricing for games will remain stable. Less cheating hacks.
Homebrew is overrated and it’s so 80″s. Dont need that crap.
You hacks need to make/develop your own console.
OH! What’s that! Its easier to be a Thief stealing exploits and gamers money.
Keep up the good work Sony.

  • You folks like paying for garbage, because the stress box couldn’t make u happy keep our systems safe yeah right why do you think the old ps3 models are slowly dying…. Because it’s to have us all buy the slim this all planned…

You Cats are to ignorant to see the big picture but oh well, when you do see the big picture sucks to be you

  • Give MKV support =(

  • This update distroyed my ability to have AUDIO. WTF SONY!?

  • Thank you so much for this… if it bfixes the jailbreaking. I hate hackers without a life. “My ultimate goal is to crack the PS3” congratulations on wasting amazing tech knowledge on useless stuff. Could’ve used it in a useful way like medical engineering or something.

    Good job Sony!

  • if you want something done right
    you gotta do it yourself

  • lol It’s funny to see all these people being so anti-piracy, and I don’t understand the reason. I guess they’ve been duped by the corporations into believing that a pirated copy equals a lost sale. But kudos to Sony for being so quick to try and stop it (and they won’t, just like every other attempt by every other company). Don’t you wish they were this attentive and quick when it comes to features and updates that people actually want?

  • we want cross game chat wud make life alot easier

  • @179
Who said I was against homebrew!?

    @187
WTF are you going on about!?

  • This is really bad, Sony fixed it too quickly. This makes me think that there could be more exploits that they don’t know about. They let the hackers show them the exploits, instead of finding them ahead of time.

Any funding that WOULD have gone to actual features has been taken over by the “Disable OtherOS” and “Security Features” update funds.

P.S. I got a friend to make his PSP-1000 “unhackable” by updating his software. Sony should be thanking me, as he actually wants to buy PSN games now.

  • They (jailbreakers)have already bypassed this update sony, guess the cat and mouse game begins.

  • @271, unfortunately you’ve been misinformed. I’m not some anti-piracy Sony fanboy and I’m not saying you shouldn’t emulate old games if you want, I’m just saying it’s illegal.

Emulators themselves are OK. Homebrew in general is OK. Playing old game ROMs on an emulator is illegal, even if you own the originals. This is true in Canada and the US. In the early days when ROMs started increasing in popularity, sites perpetrated misunderstandings about their legality (it was OK if you had the original, it was OK if you deleted within 24 hours, etc.) but the only way a ROM copy of an old game is legal is if you’re a library / archival institution making your own backup from your own legal copy of the original.

Practically, we all know that there’s little actual legal danger for the individual retro ROM pirate, so I’m not saying we should cower in fear from some gaming Big Brother, just that it makes sense Sony wouldn’t promote open old-school emulation as a fan-pleasing “feature” on its system.

  • Sad but for every super geek you have figuring out how to patch the jailbreakers there is a super geek getting around it. Work on some things the community really wants. In your struggle to control this the people who pay for their things are getting tired of waiting for cool new features. Might want to satisfy your paying customers first.

  • FYI….their is a way to bypass this update so in theory it is NOT mandatory. But i updated as im a PS+ member and BUY my games.

  • This is just a fix for the hackers, I for one am not updating until Sony adds in game music. I thought the reason for 7 processors was to multi task, but Sony won’t let it. I’m no hacker but I’m tired of Sony making me use my satellite internet to update and they add no functionality this is the point of an update dumb asses. All I have to say is I’m tired of the days you were encouraged to “Hack” your system. If the next console is anything like the PS3 you can bite it Sony. IE promises made but not kept.

  • @283 u can play mkv files on the ps3 if u use a program called “mkv2vob” its super fast at converting and loses none of the quality….i have numerous mkv quality files on my ps3. Try it Out!

  • Cool story, bro.

I’ll update when we get some new features.

  • You got my support, Sony. Happy to help fight the jailbreakers.

  • It’s amazing to me how you guys can get an update to stop something from happening so fast but you actually wont give us what we want and hold things back if you put as much work as you did to get this out to stop the jailbreak “which is actually going to keep on happening” than we would have everything we ask for, and here is a tip if you want everyone to update add your little security patch with something people actually want so that everyone would update ” I have 2 PS3″ I don’t have jailbreak software but you see my point and allot of other people also have 2 PS3’s and theres a bunch more who don’t care for being online they just want free games but if you give people something worth the update everyone would do it.
