Re-imaging of Dante, and the New Devil May Cry

291 11

“I remember calling it Developers May Cry, it looked that good.” God of War III’s game director Stig Asmussen confesses in the upcoming God of War Directors Live event, when asked about his art direction days on the original God of War. Devil May Cry; its headliner, Dante; and the entire DMC mythology have sprung installments on multiple consoles, comic books and an anime series. Dante is an iconic figure in the video game world, so imagine the reaction when Lead Producer Alex Jones and Chief Creative Director Tameem Antoniades were tapped to change everything we know about Devil May Cry and start from scratch. The result? DmC.

Clearly, Ninja Theory and Capcom were anticipating a strong reaction and fan skepticism, but after my conversation with the new DmC team, I grew more confident that Dante and the cast of DmC are in good hands. It’s daring, crazy and extremely challenging to change an 11-year-old franchise. But, if Christopher Nolan can do it with Batman Begins, maybe Ninja Theory can do the same for Devil May Cry. I’m sure you’ll agree when I say that I feverishly await more details behind the new DmC. Expect both Jones and Antoniades to visit the PlayStation.Blog in the future.

I like the new hair. There, I said it.

  • there is a difference between making a reboot of a game and an iconic character when this new Dante was announced I said they made one of video games mode Iconic characters looks like a flaming homo with the cliche cancer stick, If you’re not making a Devil may cry game and not using Dante then it’s not devil may cry. call whatever you like but don’t say and am quoting Alex Jones ” where going to toughen up the new Dante” cause so far he’s doing an amazing job with all the negative feedback’s Personally i thought heavenly sword was a crappy game and if other developers truly believe DMC is in good hands then they have truly mistaken and Ive heard been reading these comments that Dante fell out of people’s vocab then he was probably not one of the most wanted characters in Marvel Vs capcom 3 and if. and thinking this one guy will make a Dark knight miracle then you are truly an optimist with all this negativity surrounding this new Dante

  • last post for a while I promise… btw NT is not all that great heavenly sword was visually stunning but that could be attributed to my gift from God television just as much other than that it was a slow moving glitchy mess and the story made no sense… “ooh we have this sacred sword we can’t use we just look at it and worship, and i’m sorry I don’t really think there was much depth to spaghetti hair girl other than “I have to save my people”, the martyr thing is kinda cliche… I kept all of DMC’s titles including despite the disjointed story cuz it was still intriguing cuz they coulda gone further with the story of Sparda, or even vergil for that matter or even with whatever happened after 2, but HS was nothing more than a rental 6 hours no trophies not mention no gratification from beating it on the hardest difficulty known to man… but in all honesty I really think that this new Dante… must die. I hope that scene where he’s chained up is the ending scene right before the credits that would be awesome.

  • Less emo/scene, and more punk and we got ourselfs a badass haha btw people who use scene or emo with punk UHH they arent even closeeeee but yes I meann as longas the game is good yeah buttt I kidna like how he is not all perfect cause the world is griddy in real life and kinda ugly at times and this kinda gets me.

  • Okay so I’m a DMC fan and I have to say I was caught off guard by Ninja Theory’s new design for Dante (or Edward as I will refer to him until more of the game is shown). However I am too much of a fan to turn away from this as it is the first new game (well any game actually) in the series in a long time (while RE gets an update yearly pretty much). I do understand that they want to try something new, but at the same time I do agree with the hardcore fans who want back what they’ve abandoned. To be honest the only things that really gets to me is the fact that the director has Dante’s hair and the fact that he smokes (when he made eating pizza while fighting demons awesome in DMC3). What I’m trying to get at is yes Dante is an iconic character and the change is jarring, but give it a chance and wait till you have access to the full game to give judgement. At least that’s what I’m going to do and I sure hope it lives up to my expectations.

  • i dont like the change in Damte it reminds me of dark sector meets nano breaker why not just give us a game about Sparda

  • ok ok. so the new DMC is coming out and guess what. its gonna suck. i say that the guys will now change the combat system because they just showed that they can change his appearance this means they will fully change it to the way they want it to be. HOW dare these idiots do this to Dante. I hated DMC4 until i got to play as Dante. He is DMC and these fools are slowly killing him. I for one will boycott this game because its not DEVIL MAY CRY its EMOS MAY CRY!

  • I’m totally dissapointed. I’ll pass on this one… Unless they bring the old Dante back.

  • By the way, this new character reminds me of Michael Jackson’s Thriller video.

  • I love the Devil May Cry franchise and own all the games, books, anime, manga, etc. However I won’t even grace this game with a rental or demo download. I was considering trying HS and Enslaved and I love most Capcom games and am really looking forward to MvC3. However, after seeing the abomination they mistakingly call Dante, I am boycotting both Ninja Theory and Capcom. Sure my game collection may suffer but until they correct my FAVORITE video game franchise this is they only thing I can really do to get my point across. Maybe if all outraged Dante fans do the same Capcom will listen to us and return to the original story-line.
If they want something different why not follow a Sparda or Virgil story line for a spin-off or two?

Point is… If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!

  • I’m thoroughly excited for this new game. I think it’s kind of pathetic that everyone is going “GOD I HATE THIS GAME BECAUSE HIS HAIR IS BLACK! GOD I HATE THIS GAME BECAUSE HE LOOKS LIKE A HIPSTER!”

I appreciate what they’re doing with the franchise, and as a writer myself I appreciate the story that they appear to be weaving. No matter how much fans are complaining, Lord knows this is going to sell and sell well. We live in a very sad age if a game can flop because hardcore people can’t stand a little hair dye and a teenager going through a rough patch. Dante didn’t just pop out of the womb shooting up demons and slapping women on the rear, every hardcore hero had to start somewhere.

  • I love how. The theme for gaming has gone into an reverse time scheme. Imagine the future grim!? When I imagine the picture. I get dark ages style of “aesthetics”. The game looks great! I’m an seasoned fan, and I think Capcom, Tameem Antoniades, Alex Jones have paved a new road for DMC to further extend the franchise. I’m so excited to and anxiously waiting to play this title.

    -Fifty-50 Trap-

  • @Vcheese

Sorry you feel that way. Cool that you have a time machine though :)

  • @juujigai

Come on! you don’t need a time machine to know this is going to fail, Just read!

  • Sorry you feel that way. Thankfully your opinion doesn’t have to equal mine. I intend to thoroughly enjoy this new game, shame that you don’t seem willing to try it based solely on them messing with your Dante’s looks.

    *shrug*

    Oh well.

  • Even if it were not Dante i don’t like the main character. I hate that emo look.

  • That’s too bad.

  • Why do you people keep changing the characters looks?
ITS NOT THE CHARACTERS, ITS THE GAME PLAY GET THAT THROUGH YOUR HEADS!!! fix the damn camera problem. P.S you completely ruin devil may cry for me.

  • @juujigai I think more people are more offended at the fact that Ninja Theory took the liberty to do a total redesign of a character that’s been around since 2001. I personally am reserving judgement of the game itself until I see gameplay videos and the like. Right now though, I totally hate the look of this new Dante. This cuts almost as deep as when Sucker Punch thought it was a good idea to redesign Cole.

  • I’m willing to try a demo, but I personally think it would have to be amazing to make up for having to play that scuzzy junkie that looks like a 18 year old that hasn’t had a bath for twenty years. Think about it, you will be looking at that character for X hours, where X=the length of the game. I see no humor that Dante has in the admittingly short demo, as a non-smoker its a tad of a turn off to see him smoking.

P.S. when they say they are aware of both the negative publicity and the positive, are they aware that, if these comments are any indication 80-90% are negative? Unless they are stupid, they should know, THAT IS NOT A GOOD THING!

  • This’ll be multiple posts to fit the text limit, so please bare with me for a bit.

Honestly I think it’s more of a matter of the negative gamers have always been far more vocal than the gamers that enjoy the products. Most of the time the only people that are more vocal than the haters are the ones that are a bit of an extremist about the series.

I agree, he does look like he hasn’t bathed in forever, which is really realistic given that he’s a parentless bastard trying to survive on his own in the streets. When you have no father and your mother is killed (and sister if they didn’t retcon her existence) and your brother up and leaves you, that really doesn’t leave you with a lot of financial options.

This is honestly a far more realistic approach to the backstory and the franchise, and when you take the novel into account it fits in quite nicely with the world this kid would live in. And besides, what teenager didn’t experiment with some “weird” clothing and hair styles at one time or another? And if you’re the only person nearby who can do what you do, some secret organization picking you up off the street and experimenting on you is also realistic.

  • I like that Ninja Theory was willing to take a darker, grittier more realistic approach to Dante’s past. And while I’m not a fan of smoking either, let’s separate the legend from the man a little bit, is it really so far fetched that a mixed up messed up teen on the streets is going to try smoking? He’s not the son of the legendary knight Sparta at this point in his life, he’s a mixed up messed up emotionally broken kid trying to make it in the world and find his way, and I’m okay with that.

I’m not saying the rest of the internet needs to agree with me, Lord knows that won’t happen, but, it would be nice if the fans could separate their hardcore love for an “icon” from what’s honestly just realistic and good storytelling, in my humble opinion.

Like I said before, everyone had to start somewhere.

  • why do ppl want a more realistic approach… i play games to get AWAY from realitiy… the more fantastical the better imo.

  • :/ And unfortunately when you start taking liberties with certain things, vampires begin to sparkle in the sunlight. Not to knock Twilight but in all honesty, I could have done without just that one thing. That was just the straw that broke the camels back.

  • I’ve tried editing my comment twice to avoid referrencing a location starting with an h and referrencing how awesome something is with an analogy that uses the word bad and ends in a part of anatomy, third times the charm I suppose. Forgive me if the other two comments get allowed and post with near identical statements.

“Shame that you feel that way, but again, the redesign was Capcom’s idea, and the realistic darker gritty look fits in with the Japanese novelization of the series as well. Either way, I intend to give the game a shot, the combat engine if anything like the video should be solid, and the story looks quite interesting as well. I don’t see a change in fashion or a look at his past worth missing out on a potentially good game.

I really do think that this honestly makes him a cooler character. You don’t get as cocky, calm and collected as future Dante is without going through horrible times to get there and learning how to compose yourself. The fact that he had to endure all this as a teenager and he managed to survive it, overcome it, and become stronger for it makes him a more real, tangible and in my opinion more awesome character.”

  • What on earth are these people talking about? They say they want to make him less fashionista but the new design looks like a trendy emo whiny bratty kid. Then they go on to say that they needed to tuffen him up, but the new design looks like a complete wuss. I hate the new design, there was absolutely no reason for it. I will not be buying this. Im very disappointed. What was Capcom thinking?

  • I don’t have a problem with the redesign in general, but the hair…. it just puts me off. It makes him look like an emo (hopefully he will not cut himself in the game…). They really gotta work on the hair because that’s underlying cause of this negative fan feedback.

  • God I hope these ‘Hardcore’ Dante fans don’t screw this up for us ‘would-be’ Dante fans, I loved the first one, aside from the cheesy over the top cutscenes involving no laws of physics etc… (shooting a motorbike to keep it aloft? anybody?)
The second one turned me off of the series almost instantly… The third one was interesting but altogether not interesting enough that I had to play through it… The fourth one I bought because there wasn’t much on ps3 at the time, and I like Nero he’s cool-ish…

also I’m just gonna’ throw this out there again…
Resident Evil + Visceral Games… Think about it…

Save the endangered games, adult-ify them now.

  • This looks simply awful. They talk about making him look tougher and more edgy, then they make him look more feminine, lanky and fragile.

Another side note, I would hardly call Dante an “icon” in gaming

  • I can understand all the hate but some of you people should just wait for the actual game or demo to come out so you can back up your reason more to hate the character. You never know, it might even change your opinion about it to a positive one. I for one am happy about the change, and really looking forward to this reboot. I played all the DMCs and I only enjoyed the first one. Part 3 (prequel) almost went on the hate list because of how he almost looked like MJ with that jacket on, but after giving it a go ended up loving it (first DMC still tops it though). So don’t knock it before you try it guys.

  • Ninja Theory? Ninja Theory? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Inafune, are you insane? are you see Heavenly Sword ? are you play Enslaved?
    ok ok ok
    I know It’s a bad reaction,
    BUT DMC TO NINJA THEORY

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Just wanted to voice my support for what you guys are doing with this game, because I know you’re likely to get a hostile reception, but I for one am behind you. I’d like to see more.

  • Please change the name of the game and MC’s name and were cool

  • to be honest maybe ur doing a good game but its already not Devil May Cry.Maybe im naive but il be waiting for Devil May Cry 5

  • And why the hell a reboot whos idia was that?????

  • no wait i think i get it.at the end of the game Dante’s hair gona turn white, he will stop smoking toughen up and become the cool guy we all love right?

  • i agree with radicalzez, bring on DMC5, and have the same looking characters as in DMC4 and bring nero back, and there’s no need to change dante into a emo smoking metro character

  • Where is the white-haired flegmatic in dark-red jacket? This smoking, scragged punk doesnt have anything to do with true Dante. This new “Dante” is lame a definetly not cool. How dare you to take from us Dante fans, the true Dante and replace him with this…starving, emo punk.

  • I forgot to say: who had fun of killing all those demons (regards the original Dante).

  • I don’t think it matters what Dante looks like, as long as the game is fun to play. Personally I didn’t find DMC4 much fun so I’m glad they have changed direction.

  • I am seemingly one of the only people who think the new trailer was pretty darn cool. I got a really good sense of direction and I happen to be a fan of the grittier realistic-ish edge to it. I really do see more of a early punk-rock look to him rather than what most seem to be gleaming. I don’t mind if the main character is young or thin.

I do get that folks are immediately upset about change in a franchise they have been playing for years, that is natural. Comparing the look to a Twilight character is a bit too much though. I don’t think that is what Ninja Theory is doing.

I guess its up to them to deliver the goods game-play wise. There is a real opportunity to have a huge win if the new DMC can actually get alot of the current haters to like they game when it comes out. I, for one am rooting for Ninja Theory. Stick to your guns guys, and good luck!

  • the only difference between this ‘reboot’ and the batman one is that the new batman movies made it more like the comic… and batman didn’t suddenly look nothing like batman.
you don’t change an icon, fans like icons. this is good for fans, and good for business seeing how fans will buy a game just because of an iconic character.
i am unhappy with the redesign and i’m not really liking the graphic style but i’ll judge that after more screens and trailers.
obviously its still a devil may cry game so the gameplay is going to blow every other game out there away and the story will be great(hopefully), but i wonder how ninja theory would feel if that chick from heavenly sword suddenly looked like an emo girl.

  • They need to toughen up the difficulty instead of the main character, atleast DMC3 took me more than a day to finish. Would also like to see some form of multiplayer this time around, DMC deathmatch sounds like tons of fun.

  • Boo Ninja Theory.

  • I dig it.

  • Haterzz gona hate, this is what I think, i love dmc with the original Dante but the new look is not making it for me yet but this is what makes me think, Dante will be on marvel vs capcom 3 and now also have Nu/Dante, I still don’t understand why you change it, such an iconic character, whould of been the same if George lucas changed the color/armor on Darth vader between the movies of the saga, no. I love capcom but this is just not right game play wise it could be the most awesome game on the planet but it will never be the same again, you call it Devil may cry I’ll call it Players will cry, my 2 cents.

  • hate the new design but the reaction in this thread makes me lose hope in humanity

  • He looks emo, just awful, honestly, he was real he would come after who ever changed his character.

  • I don’t know… but ever since the first Devil May Cry… the series has gone slowly down hill. I loved the first one, beat it I don’t know how many times, and I bought all of the other installments in the series because I kept remember that first game, but they fell way, way short. I had kept the first one even after trading in the 2nd and 3rd games… this latest one I didn’t even play because it was just so… I don’t know… it wasn’t what the first one was.

  • Wow, so many fanboys missed their Junior Juice this morning…

I honestly didn’t enjoy a single DMC after the first. I am welcoming the change over to Ninja Theory. Heavenly Sword was a beautiful and fun hack n slash at launch. Imagine what they will be doing with all the money thrown at them for DmC. I am intrigued.
