Duke Nukem Forever PS3 Interview

James Gallagher's Avatar Posted by Blog Manager, SCEE

In what some people were comparing to shaking hands with Bigfoot and riding the Loch Ness monster, I can now confirm (as if you didn’t know already) that Duke Nukem Forever is very real, it is coming to PS3 and I have played it.

I also grabbed this interview with the President and CEO of Gearbox Software, Randy Pitchford.

Duke Nukem Forever Interview

How does it feel to have this iconic character in the Gearbox stable?

It’s kind of surreal but I really have to forget about that and focus on the mission of finally releasing Duke Nukem Forever. I’m trying not to worry about pressure or expectations.

In what state was the code in when Gearbox first got its hands on Duke Nukem Forever?

The vision was certainly evident and there were several moments of brilliance scattered throughout the game. When 3D Realms shut down, there were eight guys that managed to take everything that had been worked on and stitch it together; they went through war to get it even to this stage. They now call themselves Triptych and they’re up on the 10th floor of our offices. They did an amazing job and they deserve a lot of respect.

Right now there’s a team based in Vancouver called Piranha and they’re working on some amazing optimisations for PlayStation 3. It was almost inconceivable, when we first received the code, that we could bring it to PS3 but we refused to accept that and have put in a huge amount of work to ensure that the software comes to that audience.

The nature of the project and the level of goodwill that surrounds it in the industry mean that we’ve had plenty of people willing to jump in and help.

Have you removed or adding anything?

A lot! It’s a complex piece of software and it would go well beyond the scope of this interview to detail the additions and omissions. Today, there are 70 people involved in the project, yet when 3D Realms closed its doors, there were 30.

In terms of the story, the design and the experience, it’s a 3D Realms game through and through.

Is the level of expectation around the game a blessing or a curse?

I don’t know yet. With Borderlands, the challenge was getting everyone’s attention. With Duke, we have the opposite problem.

Is there a sense of poetic justice in once again working with Duke?

Not justice at all – I was with Duke for a few years and there are so many people involved for longer than me. One thing I am pleased about is that Allen [Blum] is still involved. Allen created Duke; I feel honoured and privileged to be carrying the Duke Nukem torch but only because I’m carrying it with Allen and he is involved every day.

Are you including multiplayer?

Of course – I can’t imagine a Duke Nukem game without multiplayer. When 3D Realms was working on the game, they never got around to that side of things so Gearbox has enabled a huge effort on that front.

Do you see any discrepancies between the flavour of gaming of 12 years ago, when Duke Nukem Forever was conceived, and the tastes of modern gamers?

Sure, games have evolved in some ways but there are some areas where they’ve stagnated. For example, Duke Nukem 3D was really innovative, at the time, with its mix of combat and environmental puzzle solving. It was rich with interactive environments and plenty of secrets to discover if you veered off the natural path.

Not so many games bother with those any more. Half-Life does a good job with its pacing, I suppose, but hardly anything has the level of interactivity of Duke or does the hidden Easter eggs thing any more. Duke Nukem Forever does all of that.

When’s the sequel coming out?

I have spent zero mindshare on anything beyond Duke Nukem Forever!

Finally and slightly off-topic, how is Aliens: Colonial Marines doing?

It’s looking great! We’ve been radio silent but we’re very excited. It’s funny you should mention it because if you go back and look at Duke Nukem 3D, we included facehuggers and there’s Aliens stuff up on the walls. I’ve been stealing from Aliens my entire career so it feels great to finally be involved in the canon.

Truthfully, the game was announced too early – the ink wasn’t dry on the contract and we hadn’t even written the first line of code, but we’re really committed and so is SEGA, and I’m sure that pretty soon we’ll be in a position to start talking again.

I’m very intrigued and respect the developers for what they’ve been through to bring out this game. I’d honestly like to see some footage of the game running on a ps3 though :D. Also, is there at least an estimate of length on this game?

Always bet on Duke!

I have many fond memory’s of playing Duke Nukem 3D back in the day and from what I’ve seen on this so far has looked immense. I can’t wait to get my hands on this game.

Duke will be out on all three primary platforms, but it’s nice to know that Gearbox is going the extra mile on the PS3 version. There’s some good details on that in the Q&A above.

Typo #1:

Typo #2:

DNAgent said:

The demo showed what looks more like a 360 controller and only the 360 has Duke Nukem 3D. I’m not going to be buying the mediocre shooter because of lack of support. PS3 still doesn’t have Duke Nukem 3D either. The only reason this game will sell will be based on nostalgia which is what will blind people to the mediocrity of this game. On top of that this game is rumored to come out in February of next year. This is the perfect time for it to get overshadowed by Portal 2 & Killzone 3.

I cannot tell you how long I have been waiting. Not just for any more continuations of the games I played as a kid (Doom, Quake, Unreal (not tournament), Duke Nukem), but specifically for a Duke Nukem sequel. I am also happy to see it come to the PS3 after I left the PC gaming scene and started using consoles :P Now why not put Duke Nukem 3D on the PSN?

Also, this BETTER not be a inferior port!!! I can’t imagine a bigger insult than having a legendary series like this have an inferior version on our system.

Yeah typos..lol..although how can you say anything about typos when you don’t spell check your own post..unless “ahve” is the new “have”. silly typos..

I’m still a bit skeptical that Duke Nukem Forever is actually coming out… I’m just waiting for it to be delayed, but I think it might actually come out this time.

2 Things:

1) I want a Special Edition. If it comes out, I want to buy it on day one and I want a Special Edition.
2) I hope you guys put up the PAX Demo soon! Prove the game exists! :p

King4Ransom said:

the only thing I’m concerned with is will this be as difficult and have all the other elements as the first Duke Nukems. (lots of levels to explore, secrets, lots of weapons and lots of levels) if it has those things that’s worth a buy all by its self to me. all the new graphics and everything else is just icing.

What a great interview sincerly.
As a young kid, i used to play a lot of Duke Nukem 2, and now i am playing Duke Nukem 3D with my broken arm.
But it’s kind of sad that Todd Reploge the co-creator has retired pretty soon and live in Thailand married and with kid he had done a lot with Duke Nukem 2.
it’s also nice to hear that Duke Nukem Forever is coming to console, will it support the PlayStation Move controller?
hope it bring back some duke nukem 2 feeling

I hope you guys get this game released with great success… I’m kind of tired of hearing Duke Nukem Forever jokes lol. Finally move this series out of obscurity for its fans (not that I’m one of them, I just can relate *sigh* Legacy of Kain).

EggySong85 said:

It’s nice they have a team devoted to optimizing the game for PS3. It’s hard to tell whether or not they’re just going to port it or if they’re planning to add in PS3 stuff like 3D and Move support, though. I naturally hope for both on any PS3 port, but I’m not expecting the PS3 version of Duke Nukem Forever to get any special treatment, since the original code seems to need so much work as it is. Either way, I’ll be happy just to play it on my console of choice.

It’s too bad nobody in SCEE nor Gearbox has a grasp of the obvious or a calendar. When 3D realms closed that was the unfornate end of Dukes newest adventure. This is a blatant cash grab. What PS3 owners need / want is a modicum of original thought, that is new games not stale rehashings of whats old. Like Doom this dog has had his day. Can we not move on?

kdiep said:

October 12th, 2:47 pm

I’m actually worried now. When has ever a PS3 port been done with the quality of the lead platform by a DIFFERENT developer. In fact, it’s usually situations like these that causes the most horrific PS3 experiences. Bayonetta being a prime example of this. I know those GRAW2 and Splinter Cell games were done by another department within Ubisoft, and they look extremely rough (especially the latter).

If there is one pattern I’ve seen is that whenever the lead platform is of a non-Playstation platform, the PS3 version is doomed to be inferior. I guess we can only wait and see, but this is not sounding good at all.
