Little-Known Facts: Call of Duty: Black Ops Multiplayer

Hello! I’m Josh Olin (aka JD_2020), and thank you for the opportunity to highlight some of the features that Call of Duty: Black Ops will deliver to PS3 fans when it launches on November 9th. A number of these features are ones that I think the community has been wanting for a long time, which is why we’ve worked really hard to deliver. So let’s get started!

Call of Duty: Black Ops for PS3

Multiplayer Online Split-Screen Support

Let’s get started with what I believe is the most unknown, yet confirmed, aspect to Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer – the online split-screen support we’ve re-introduced to the franchise!

The Facts:

  • You can connect a second controller and bring a guest online (i.e. “JD_2020” & “JD_2020(1)”).
  • Guests can rank up, earn unlocks, etc – all guest progress goes away once signed out.

Custom Games Editor

Allow me to introduce the Black Ops Custom Games Editor! Private matches have never been this customizable. Players will have the ability to structure their games at all new levels of granularity. From variables as simple as Time Limit and Score Limit, or as deep as which weapons, Perks, and gear are available. You want a Pistols Only match? Make one! No longer do custom game modes rely on the “honor system.”

Furthermore, any Custom Game you create and configure can be placed in your File Share, for friends and the community to browse, download, and enjoy. You just might create the most addictive new game mode of all time from the comfort of your own living room!

In-Game Friends List

We’ve integrated a built-in Friends List into the in game user interface. You’ll be able to browse Recent Players, Friends, navigate their File Shares, Recent Games, Combat Records – all within this in-game menu system designed to streamline the social process within the game. Sending game invites and joining Friends’ games has never been simpler than in Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Regional Matchmaking & Party Privacy

Call of Duty: Black Ops will support regional matchmaking filters on a global scale. So, no matter where you’re at in the world, you will have the ability to specify whether you want to match with players from other geographical regions, or only those local to you. This will make communication and lag a much less intrusive variable on your gameplay experience.

Additionally, given Black Ops will support joining games in progress via an even simpler built-in in-game Friends List interface, we’ll allow a Party leader to lock down his lobby to Invite Only, Friends Only, or even Close it altogether if he wants to be in complete control over who enters and exits the Party Lobby.

Emblems Do NOT Reset with Prestige

This one is pretty cut-and-dried. A frequently asked question is, “Will my kickass emblem I spent hours perfecting be lost when I prestige?” The answer is “NO!” Emblems are one of the only aspects of Black Ops MP that do not get a full reset upon entering Prestige. Things that will reset when you Prestige are: XP, COD Points, Challenge progressions, Loadouts, and so forth.

So that’s just a few of the lesser-known components to Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer, confirmed for the first time here on the official PlayStation.Blog! For more information regarding Black Ops, and all the new features included in multiplayer, head over to our official YouTube channel and watch all the different trailers we have highlighted from the game. • @151, oh give it up. Microsoft throws money at all these companies to get timed exclusive DLC. Why shouldn’t they take it?

It’s Sony’s fault that we are getting shafted on stuff like that. Sony isn’t willing to throw some money into getting some exclusive content (most of the time). Don’t blame it on Treyarch.

  • PS3 gets the inferior multiplat again! :(

  • Ive sent like 3 tweets to JD_2020 maybe if we spam his twitter he will convince the devs that we should be treated equal to other users

    DO IT. IM DOWN

  • I have been man

  • Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn, How about give us destructible environments ( that’ll never happen ) then you can start bragging about how this game is more advanced and better than MW2. I mean c’mon we get to play in this luscious ” JUNGLE ” map full of trees and plants etc. You call in a ” Rolling Thunder ” killstreak and lo and behold after the dust settles not a blade of grass is bent, not a tree branch is broken ? FAIL. BC2 VIETNAM WILL OWN black Ops. If I’m suppose to be in a jungle then I want to be able to actually destroy a bush that’s blocking my view. I guess Black Ops is so advanced it features Kevlar covered Titanium skeleton foliage lol. The reality is the COD game engine will never be upgraded to feature destruction because that would mean they would they couldn’t spit out the next COD title come next November and Activision isn’t messing with the golden goose.

  • THIS GAME IS GONNA BE SOOOO FI_IkIn $!CK =D CANT WAIT

  • Why no multiple profile loading in online multiplayer WHY Josh Olin WHY :(
Please we need a patch I want multiple account loading in online cmon WHY!!
Pss: I know is because of the big cash Micro$oft give to ActiMoney :(
    Hate on you all :(

  • urgh….Sony, improve your online structure already!

I was so excited two PSN sign-ins (with unlocks) were coming to PS3, but NOPE.

  • Guys, think about it, have you seen two PSN logins on any PS3 game (RES2 did not track stats for 2nd player), you have NOT.

It’s a PSN limitation, nothing Treyarch can do.

    Shout at Sony instead.

  • @ 164

Then why did this post initially say we could sign into 2 PSNs? Also, David Vonderhaar’s twitter said it too, yesterday.

How can they NOT know what features are in the game when it’s due out in 2 weeks?

  • @165

    Good point dude.

My guess is maybe Sony was going to enable two PSN log-ins (and stat tracking) with a FW but that FW got delayed.

  • The point is, if they put 2 log-ins the way Res2 did, it would make no difference.
In Res2, you lost everything you’ve unlocked as a 2nd player and you did NOT get trophies. You might as well have been a guest.

So we have to wait for a FW that enables PROPER 2 PSN sign-ins where 2nd player can unlock trophies, press the PS button and see HIs friends list and also save his stats/unlocks etc.

This is missing from the Sony SDK. Nothing developers can do, we need a FW update by Sony to enable this feature.

  • i didnt buy mw2 cause i knew right from the first trailer that it was gonna be a rip off but this one though, I am gonna buy it day 1!!

  • @ somethingatt

What about the way LittleBigPlanet implemented it? If you played together, whatever you got was transferred to BOTH PSN profiles.

And seriously, STOP SCREWING US Activision and Treyarch. Why announce something at first and get our hopes up just to go back on it rapidly!?!

  • They even said on the COD website(http://www.callofduty.com/intel/407) :

“- (Xbox 360 only) You can bring a 2nd, Gold Xbox LIVE account online!”
“- (Xbox 360 only) Both players with full online accounts can rank-up while playing split-screen, as if on two separate consoles.”

  • DEDICATED SERVER, I can’t stress this enough. We need a dedicated server for multiplayer, it drives me insane that my fios connection is useless when someone with lesser bandwidth (or is just located in Oregon and I’m in Washington DC) is hosting a game, leaving me stranded and lagging like crap. I can’t explain how annoying that is.

  • Sounds awesome, I pre-ordered this game and can’t wait. Sony’s lack of press and advertising would have you believe this possible game-of-the-year would be coming out for Xbox and PC only.

  • OMG YES

  • @somethingatt

its not missing from the PS3 SDK. its been in the Sony SDK since 2008. SEE RESISTANCE 2

  • Why can’t we login with two PSN accounts at once? Resistance 2 did it, and it’s unfair the 360 gets the feature and we don’t.

  • This is bad.. on xbox they bring a different gold account online… with PSN they just said guest.

  • Happy about the split screen co-op however the fact that only one person is logged in and the other person is a guest who will lose all of their progress once you turn off your system, makes split screen seem somewhat pointless. Maybe you guys can take a tip from Resistance 2 and try and put in two player login split screen. The only time second player should be a guest is when the person your playing with doesn’t have a ps3 account on your system.

  • “- (Xbox 360 only) You can bring a 2nd, Gold Xbox LIVE account online!”
“- (Xbox 360 only) Both players with full online accounts can rank-up while playing split-screen, as if on two separate consoles.”

Anyone else pissed off about this crap?

  • “- (Xbox 360 only) You can bring a 2nd, Gold Xbox LIVE account online!”
“- (Xbox 360 only) Both players with full online accounts can rank-up while playing split-screen, as if on two separate consoles.”

biggest load of crap ever. PS3 IS CAPABLE OF DOING THIS.

  • @ somethingatt

In Resistance 2 when having a second person logged in with you, the second player got experience and lv’s for their character, just like the first player which was kinda the point of the multiplayer mode.

  • Does this mean people can boost with tac instertions with the split screen? This sounds like i’m a booster, but, i’m nawt. ;)

  • Wait why does it reset and why does the 360 get to have splitscreen with 2 acounts and ps3 can not. Are you kidding me thats just stupid, basicly if me and someone with a 360 buy the same game for the same amount of money he gets to have his buddys play with him on their own acount, and i cant do the same thing. Treyarch you fail i thought that for once their would be a balanced fun game i could play with friends and you screw it up way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dammit I was excited for two PSN account login :(

See comment 79 for excitedness :(

  • Borderlands has dual psn log in, it tracks everything

  • I absolutely love that you have added split screen online multiplayer. I love to see that feature in games.

I’m a little worried about the second player always having a lesser experience though.

Can the second player choose from player 1’s custom classes? It would suck if the second player only had the choice of the few pre-determined classes available to level 1 players.

  • awesome!

  • earlier today it showed you could sign in with two psn’s. now they corrected it and that feature was only for 360.

  • LIES……you guys really should get your facts right before posting.

  • About the online split screen, couldn’t somebody just run a guest mode player and just leave them somewhere as a scout, so they have double the vision on their screen? And they would basically get no penalty for doing this at all..

You could easily just sit one player at the entrance of a building while your in the other room sniping. Then you see someone on their screen, you turn around and shoot them.. Repeat process.

  • @ 160….they come out every 2 years fool….a diff company makes modern warfare “infinity ward”…..what a jackhole you are

  • oh yea….@189….you could, sounds pretty lame tho….good luck “having fun” playin like that…CoD is Run-n-Gun buddy!

  • Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhddddddddd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I found out about splitscreen I was soooooo happy! But now it just sucks! Only reason we aren’t getting this is because Microsoft just buys out everything! This is unfair and will probably hurt their PS3 game sales in the long run. Why should PS3 buy from them when they know they will always get the short straw?

  • @189, I am not sure how that will work, you could be on to something. I am concerned about getting people like that stuck on my team.

On the other hand, the guy has to give up half his screen to do that. Wouldn’t be worth it if you ask me.

  • This will be the game of the year (2011)(Best-Seller) of all-time. PS: X-Box sucks.

  • At least it is a guest. Oh well if we dont get to play with two psn accounts. I just want to play it online splitscreen.

  • Stop moderating post that call you folks out. Lame

  • Well, many people had saying, the PS3 dashboard is not designed to allow multiple sessions in one game, so the programmers of each game need to make some changes at the code to make it work; but each game have differents settings to adjust and in some cases is very hard do that.
If you see it, the games that allow multiple sessions are from First Party Studios, and in some cases not all the features are unlocked for the other sessions.
Maybe will be allowed this feature but with a update of the PS3 firmware.

  • It would have been a nice feature, but to be completely honest I don’t I would ever used it. The game is already packed full of stuff. Just be glad that two people can play at the same time. More and more I feel ya just can’t please anyone anymore…

  • why listen to hardcore players more??? because real men play hardcore, only bitches play regular ! 1 shot, 1 kill !!!!

  • Yes, it is lame that 360 users can log in with multiple accounts and we can’t. When EA shows their system loyalty you get a free game not less of the packaged one. That is a cheap move and not surprising from Activision which seems to further prove they are the worst game company out there.

  • 4 player split screen zombies! plz!
