  • I hope there will be online multi player match making, unlockables & vehicle & weapon upgrading because i feel it would really broaden the entire experience & add more re-playability.

  • David J i’m a huge fan of yours, I still remember getting God of War 1 and knowing nothing about it. I got it the same day Resi 4 came out for PS2, have to say they were the best 2 games i have ever bought on ther PS2. The fact that i never knew what to expect from GOW1 made it all the better.

Anyway about twisted metal…….i have never played one before(i’m from London by the way) because i never knew about them, never saw one commercial on tv. Please don’t let Sony do this to your game.

AND PLEASE ADD STATUS UPDATES ON THE XMB LIKE COD BLACK OPS AND NEED FOR SPEED:HP THAT TELLS YOU WHAT MODE AND STAGE YOUR FRIENDS ARE PLAYING. For MP games this should be standard but sony games like Killzone 2, Motorstorm and Uncharted 2 don’t have this feature.

Mr J keep up the good work.

  • I got to say TM head on the PSP was my first TM game and I had a blast with it. I am a graphics whore and I am not looking for a God of War 3 looking game, but something that claims a spot on the best looking game of this generation’s ladder, I wish you good luck on completing the game. and Please have a stable online experience, with Sony would allow dedicated servers to make things run much better regardless of a clients connection, but that is ok, Good luck

  • Thanks David, your videos always give me a giggle or two. :p

  • What ESRB rating are you aiming for in this game? Still “T”? Thanks

  • I remember there was this kid who had TM. I went to his house to check it out, and the idea of having guns and missiles on cars was so brilliant, how could I resist? I didn’t even like hanging out with him, but I did so I could play TM.

TM also reminds me of this one worker, an older gentlemen, who worked for my Dad. Whenever someone cut him off or he got stuck in traffic, he would say, “What I wouldn’t give for machine guns under the grill.”

I still have my copy of TM2, original case and everything. I didn’t even think about the PSP, until I heard it had TM.

Thanks for stopping and answering some questions, and thanks to the team working hard on TM.

How much of yourself do you see in Calypso? Calypso brings the TM tournament, and you are one of the head people who brings the TM universe to us gamers.

Will there be a collector’s edition?

Will we see any older TM games up on the PSN for download? I know that TM2 is up for download, but it would be great if TM releases on the PS3, and that day have a collection of 2-4 older games release on the PSN.

I can’t wait for the game, and I just know that this will be the most amazing Twisted Metal EVER!

  • The thing that will make or break this game is definitely the multiplayer. To be honest, I have never bought a Twisted Metal game before, but it doesn’t mean I never played them. All my memories of this game are going to a friends house, sitting on their couch and just going at it for a few rounds.

Now that we have online features with PSN, picking up this game is a no brainer. Just keep that awesome arcadey action intact and we’re golden.

The fact that I will be able to blow up someone half way across the world with a turret mounted ice cream truck just goes to show that it is a great day and age I live in.

  • Totally looking forward to the game and live in England myself and was gutted you never released TM4 over here (I had to import it plus a PS1 just to play it!). Been a fan since the beginning and love your work I really hope you keep it up and your doing a great job so far in keeping in touch with the fans something most developers don’t do then wonder why there games don’t sell.

I would like to know though any chance of live PSeye feed while playing?? So I can see my opponent as I blow them up that would be fun or maybe for co-op nothing better than talking through cams rather than head sets. Early games this gen touched on this idea but never really did much with it.

But anyways like I said keep up the great work and co-op it’s what I am most excited about as I always played previous games with my friends and wouldn’t want the latest game any different. Especially as it’s online co-op as we have grown up now and don’t get as much time to visit each others houses so TM is evolving with me I feel :).

  • Dave! Sweet tooth icecream taste like burning. It’s too much, what other flavor does he have other than awesomeness and GOTY? Merry christmas god dammit. Now let me go ahead and light my head on fire in anticipation.

  • Thx Dave for some insight into the though process that takes place in developing and balancing out a game. We can’t wait for the Beta and final product.

    Dave

  • Twisted Metal 2 had been the first game of the 3D generation I had come experience. I can distinctively remembering playing The Big Leap for the first time as Sweet Tooth. Just like another favorite of mine growing up, Mortal Kombat, Twisted Metal 2 had a great deal of hype surrounding it in my circle of friends for the secrets and easter eggs hidden within the game. I had already discovered Needles after plummeting to my death on several occasions and acquiring the code written below the rooftops, but it was when I sent a Power missile at my brother’s request hurling towards the Statue of Liberty that I got my first true taste of what TM2 had to offer. Stripped of her robe and clad in a red bikini stood lady liberty, and then I fell in love. The Eiffel Tower, of course, comes to mind next, but then there were so many other great details to the core experience. I’m so glad you have brought back the split-screen experience that has been missing from so many games of this generation, but I also look forward to the small details which are sure to come of this next great game. From the trailer alone seeing giant bowling balls and film canisters rolling past players let’s me know this franchise is once again in the right hands.

  • This game is going to be great without a doubt… I have been a fan since the beginning and it has been a great ride. If this will be your first Twisted Metal then you are in for a treat.

My question that i hope doesnt break my heart is if Axel is returning? I know its hard to make an Axel posse but man that would be sweet. If he is not in it then how about any characters that came in TMB?

  • Twisted Metal 2 was the reason I really got hooked on the PlayStation brand. After playing for 48 hours none stop at my friends’ house one weekend, I went home, put my Genesis and all my games up for sale in the newspaper.A couple of days later sold I them and had just enough for a ps1 and 1 game(tm2 of course) not counting tax, thanks mom. Five ps1s, two ps2s, two psps and thankfully one ps3 later (I know I played them all a lot) here I a lifelong Sony and Twisted metal fan and huge Jaffeholic. Thanks and happy Holidays to you and your family.

  • David, first and foremost, I want to thank you. I know you have put your heart and sole into every game, and your not just about what will make the biggest buck, but rather what is a way for you to express yourself creatively and uniquely, time and time again.
Secondly, I have to say, I would be absolutely grateful for one of those Sweet Tooths. I have been playing your TMs since they first came out. They were one of the original reasons I wanted a PS1. My brother and I used to play it all the time, until the disc went bad. Any how I got my wife addicted playing the PS3 RE5. She may be the sweetest lady in normal everyday life, but she is also someone that loves to go around and kill AI and online opponents alike. She also loves killing people in GOW.
This would be a great gift, for her, to help get her in the mood for your new TM game. She currently has a RE T-Cell Anti-Virus Energy Drink on display under our PS3 and I know this would go right beside it.

  • TM is My Fav PS Franchise!!!!

  • David I think it’s cool how much in tune with the fans you are. I appreciate that you ask our opinions for things, but still are making that game that you want too. I love Twisted Metal and hope that this new installment honestly becomes a staple in multiplayer action.

It seems you guys are putting in alot of hard work to make this title fun and appealing for fans and newcomers alike. Keep up the good work man.

Oh also if I win one of those awesome figures. I’d like it signed by the team if you guys can work that out. Thanks.

  • The very first game I played on the PS1 was Twisted Metal 1. I remember being at my cousin’s house playing his PS1 for the first time, I believe it was on christmas and my uncle had rented him a few games for him to play on Christmas. I was there watching him and we both took turns. We thought it was fun and really was something different.

When Twisted Metal 2 came out, we went all out. We both played that game religiously. We would both take turns playing with different characters to see their endings and play co-op with Icy play on. I wasn’t a fan of that mode but it made everything a little harder and challenging.

One good thing I remember was playing with my cousin and seeing Mr. Grim fall out of nowhere in front of me (My favourite character was Specter) anyways he fell in front of me and I said out loud before I blew him away “Mr. Grim, It was nice of you to drop by.” Sounds stupid I know but it was hilarous at the time.

Anyways i’m really looking forward to this game and everything you answered sounods great. I hope there will be a beta for this game and I hope i’m lucky to be accepted. Thanks for answering all our questions! Have fun with your new pet Grey Hound and Merry Christmas David and the crew!

  • Very very awesome, I’m excited for this one :D I own all 7 of the games in the series haha!

  • TM has always been a great series. I am proud to say I own every single TM game you guys have ever made(with the exception of the kiddie toy verson). I still remember working a few midnight shifts during the holidays, with not much to do we would pull out at that time brand new PS1 and play Twisted Metal all night long. That game just never got old. I am waiting for Twisted Metal 3 to come out with great anticipation. Do have one question to ask, are there going to be any collectibles in the game, like maybe a logo or a paint color to make you stand out during on-line play?

  • I remember that I found TM 2 around where I lived in the ground and saw it had no scratches and I told My cousin about it and he came over to my house and we were hooked!!

  • I have a two part question regarding the building of the new Twisted Metal. With the ride of internet enabled consoles and hard drives installed in every system the business of video game publishing has radically changed. Long term strategies are being created before a game is even in an alpha build on how to manage the future DLC and separate teams are being created just to build this content. Do you have a plan for future DLC? What are your feelings of the growing trend to create map packs featuring three maps for $15 or publishing DLC after a game ships that was created prior to a game shipping and could have been placed upon the disc but was not because more money can be squeezed out of consumers.

  • in terms of DLC, what kind will there be. characters from past TMs, new weapons, new maps, new online modes, new add on stories? Also for new charters you think we might see characters like how uncharted did by bring infamous and resistance characters in the uncharted 2 online. Any collectors edition of Twisted Metal?

Thanks for answering any of my questions and keep up the good work. Cant wait to play twisted metal next year when it comes out.

    Long time fan – BigBossX

  • The fact that you denied the making of this game makes it so much Sweeter. When you announced that there will only be three stories I was a little disappointed although to be honest if there were any three I could pick it would be the same ones. I absolutely love Dollface! She has been my favorite female character since her debut. I never had the chance to play TM Black Online and this will more than make up for it! And I can’t emphasize enough on Dollface, she really turned me on to goth chicks!

  • I’m not going to write about criticism, instead I’ll be writing why I want TM for the PS3.
The main reason I want to play this new game is mostly because I remember playing the old TMs and having a fun time. In my time back then it was what me and my friends would play. Me and my brother would even go head to head. It was one of those games that defined my early life. After a long period of not playing a TM game, I was super excited when I heard this announced.
It looks phenomenal already and I look forward to my day one purchase!
Happy Holidays David Jaffe and the team behind the TM series!

  • I remember playing Twisted Metal when i was like 8 years old. And i loved it back then. And then i forgot what the game was called.

Then i looked at E3 and sweet toth came out. I was so happy for this, and this was 1 week before i bought my ps3. So many of my friends here in sweden including myself is going to buy this game and have a blast.

    Thanks for this game.

  • will be a map editor for twisted metal ?

  • @David Jaffe
Thank you for taking the time David! Always good to hear from you and others in the industry.

  • Okay, so here’s a question for you guys.

Lets say that people who were fans of twisted metal for many years find the single player all rather easy and completed all the character difficult setting. How will it make them want to continue replaying it again and again? I mean don’t get me wrong but there are a total of 5 characters (if I’m not mistaken, by the addition of Axel) each only having 3 difficult setting. All adding up to 15 times to play it on single player.

So yeah, that was really on my mind for a while now. I really hope you guys have time to answer it. Also I have to say that my very first play-station game was twisted metal 2. I got the game when I was really young, I think 7 or 8 maybe, and I just fell in love with it. I came out to really love playing it, that sometimes when I was young my parents told me that every time they took me to the store I would get a cart and start going everywhere in the store, telling my parents, “OH YEAH, TIME TO SHOOT THE HECK OUT OF THIS PLACE” ya’know pretending I was drivings my dads car.

Well that is all I have to say and that I can’t wait to get my hands on the new Twisted Metal game.

  • Too bad I don’t like Twisted Metal…. it reminds me of Redneck Rampage. In fact, anything with evil clowns in it seems to appeal mostly to rednecks.

  • Don’t call it a reboot or a re-imagining. Just call it Twisted Metal.

  • Love Twisted Metal. Bought them all except small brawl, still want to get that one though. Anyways, Dave will this story be still in the realm of Black? The reason i love black the most is how dark and twisted the game was. The other ones were great but they felt a little cartoony and it just wasn’t as memorable. I know you said this would be the best single player experience but will it still be as dark?

  • Also to the addition to my previous question

What if the buyer of the game can’t get a hold of internet and is unable to play the online gaming.

  • I actually typed some massive entry up and tried to post it on your blog as a recommendation for the new TM, as well as a brief history, but it failed to post and i lost it. :( So i’ll try to create it again….
Basically I wanted to just let you know that one of my own personal draws into TM was when I would play with my younger brother in TM1 and TM2, both of which were great games. The large hidden level “Suburbia” or something was the one level we would constantly play. The following TM games became (in my opinion) too dark. Beyond that of dark humor, which TM1 and TM2 had so greatly achieved.
As we played TM the Game evolved for us. We created our own meta-game within the TM game. We would specifically play on city levels. It was called “Good guy, Bad guy”. We would wind up acting different roles as we drove around.
The “Good Guy” was usually Outlaw the cop or a car that could be used as an undercover cop car “Spectre”. Continued…

  • hope they give kratos a small cameo in the game using some ancient greek viehcle XD or riding some crazy demons :p

  • …The “Bad Guy” was anything other character usually “Sweet Tooth” who would periodically pull over and try to sell “Cracksicles” to the kids. It was almost like a game of follow-the-leader.
When a chase finally ensued because of our human nature to start something exciting and disobey the law, is where the intense and humourous play would ensue. The key factor was the Nitro Boost animations. It looked hysterical.
The game played out until the Bad guy pulled over and submitted, killed the good guy or escaped from the good guys view for a decent period of time.
I am 28 now but have tons of memories regarding this meta-game we created. I hope the story of two kids taking a game and making it into their own adventure inspired you on new ideas and the fact that keeping some “Light-heartedness” to the game is a beneficial decision. No one wants to play a game in the bowels of hell. Similar to when people complain when a game is too “Grey” or “Brown”.
Hope you enjoyed the read. Can’t wait to get this game!

  • I was excited to hear that a new Twisted Metal was coming to the PS3, but it’s not what I was hoping for. Twisted Metal Black was absolutely my favorite Twisted Metal. I loved the dark, semi-realistic approach. It was also my first game for PS2 and I was completely stunned by the graphics. The Twisted Metal I wanted for the PS3 was Twisted Metal Black 2, or something more in that direction. More dark and realistic. Kind of like what Christopher Nolan did for batman. The old batmans were cartoony and corny. Now, batman is something you think could be possible and the atmosphere is awesome. I enjoyed all the Twisted Metal games, and I will be getting this game too, but it’s just not what I was expecting.

  • Is there a car inspired by God of War? That would be awesome!!!!!

  • Hey, Dave! I just wanted to know, with the growing trend of DLC, do you think there might be some characters/vehicles from other Sony franchises (like Kratos, Helghast, Jak, etc.) being added on there as DLC (for multiplayer)?

  • Ahh TM, the worry i gave my primary school teachers, when i drew a whole picture book on my favourite character Axel. I have never really considered why TM would not be popular in EU and Asian markets, coming from Australia, I remember TM on PS1 being very popular at least in my circle. Just wondering if vehicular combat games that TM inspired such as Vigilante 8, actually added certain design and gameplay features for future TM. Also wondering if button combos are back for ice freeze shots and so forth.

Thanks for the split screen. Nostalgia and awesomness awaits!

  • i remember a couple years back i loved colectable cards and i hade a tone of them. at that time i was trying to get a copy of twisted metal 2 for the playstation 1 but i could not find a copy enywere. my friend who also loves the twisted metal series hade just bought a copy and i was despratly trying to buy it off of him. but he just wouldent part with it and so i hade to reason with him and ended up trading my entier card colection for it on the car ride home all i did wac admier the art. when i finaly got home i played it for 4 strate houers.i still play these games on a regular basis and you know what i dont regret the trade at all.

  • 2 thumbs up, definitely appreciate the honesty and passion present in this video.

All the new details are seriously hyping me up to heavens, 2011 can’t come sooner!

  • Thanks for the awesome video chat David! Can’t wait to play TM!
I just wanted to say why im looking forward to the new TM so much:
I’ve been playing Twisted Metal since i was 10 years old (dont blame my parents) and we only had one Playstation so my brother and I always had to share. We never liked playing games together except for Twisted Metal 2. I don’t think we’ve spent that much time together since not bickering, fighting, arguing, annoying each other and just being brothers. We were gamers together and that doesen’t really happen anymore. So thank you for the awesome experiences Jaffe.

  • My first Playstation game was TM2. I picked it up when I was waltzing out of Toys R Us with my dad back in ’96.

My friend Ben and I must have played the co-op in that game for 200 hours. You can imagine our joy when we got a chance to relive those glory days with TM: Black years later when we were hitting high-school. Ben and I don’t live terribly close nowadays (careers and lives sort of drifted us apart, geographically), but luckily this new one will be supporting online co-op.

Thanks a million Dave & Scott.

  • by far the greatest part of my TM history is playing TM2 with my friend and just dying sooooo much on the ice level but we didnt care at all since it was soo much fun playing that game over and over

and also playing as twister took sooo much skill since her special was sooo good but also did alot of dmg to herself just made the game sooo much fun for me

twisted metal to me is what made me love coop video games and till this day im playing TM2

tm2 made my childhood-teen years a damn blast and im sure i can speak for my friends that they also agree with me

this was a long time coming but the amount of love im sure your putting into the game will shine as much as it did for tm2 and tm black…. thank you and i will be picking this up for sure

also i miss you on your blog but i do understand your super busy :P

    happy holidays Eat Sleep Play

  • The one thing I’ve always had trouble with Twisted Metal is the special attacks (energy shield, freeze, etc). Why don’t you have it as a secondary weapon tray that recharges or maybe a selectable special attack before a match, ie the SF Alpha Series or Marvel v Capcom? I’ve just never been able to muscle memory the button presses and drive for some reason. Thanks for answering questions Jaffe.

  • I hated Twisted Metal. HATED it. It looked boring, clunky, and just not my thing. Then I saw the reveal for TM PS3. My interest was peaked. The graphics were nice, the driving looked tight enough, and there was just something about it that seemed fun. I decided to look into the TM series. After looking through the history of TM i really had a change of heart. I know Jaffe has an eye for quality, so i figured this game wouldn’t be an exception, and the multiplayer (offline and online) looked like a LOT of fun. just the sheer joy of getting a couple friends and playing some just for fun matches on the couch together seemed right.

Jaffe, I know you can make this the awesome multiplayer experience that PS3 needs. It looks awesome, and you got me hooked!

  • The main reason besides the mp that people loved the game was a certain wickedness and ruthlessness that you couldn’t find in any other games especially in the 90’s. The unique characters and story lines are what makes twisted metal great and the fact that you can play with others just adds to the fun.

My criticism is obvious, the game is going to lack some very beloved characters and we understand that adding more character’s means more time and money, but I was always excited to play as new and old characters and to see their story lines as well. I will miss that in this game.

In other words, please add mr.slam into single player as DLC. Thank you!

  • The intro of Twisted Metal for E3 is what caught me onto this game.

I was big into Vigilante 8 (which obviously was a rival) and I only played TM at a friends house a few times.

But the intro for the game at the E3 conference was amazing, and the fact that you brought coulrophobia into the atmosphere of gaming is beyond awesome. Sweet Tooth is badass, and I will be purchasing this game instantly.

  • The Twisted Metal series is one the main reasons I’m a Playstation gamer..preorder my copy sight unseen! By the way i heard a rumor that the game’s name was given because “Drive Fast and Blow [DELETED] Up In a Psychotic Rage” was too long winded..can you confrim this.Signing from the crew of “Drive Fast and Blow [DELETED] Up In a Psychotic Rage” with your signatures on that Sweet Tooth would be sufficient confirmation..yes I may have started the rumor.

  • I Have a question In Nuke i saw a team of sweet tooth and a team of doolface,Is there going to be more teams or only for specific multiplYER MODES
