NBA 2K11 Gets Free Stereoscopic 3D Update on January 16th

Ronnie2K here! Back in October, I discussed NBA 2K11’s PlayStation Move functionality along with a deep look on all the great features NBA 2K11 has to offer. And if you ever have suggestions for NBA2K, hit me up on Twitter and follow us on Facebook.

NBA 2K11 has garnered more than two dozen Sports Game of the Year awards, has been called “the greatest sports game of this generation” in earning a 9.5 from IGN, and continues to be one of the most talked about games across social networks. And the nostalgia behind the return of Michael Jordan to the virtual hardwood continues to be overwhelming. For the few of you who have been holding out for a copy or have put your NBA 2K11 on the shelf for a couple weeks, I just wanted to give you heads-up about the upcoming game update. Especially anyone who was lucky enough to pick up a stereoscopic 3D TV over the holidays.

NBA 2K11 for PS3

For those of you who missed out on the 3D retail exclusive at Best Buy released back in November, this Sunday, January 16th, we will be offering a free title update to your NBA 2K11 game that will allow PlayStation 3 users, who have a 3D television and online connectivity, to experience NBA 2K11 in 3D! Just pop your game in and it will update before the title screen. From there, you can turn on your TV’s 3D capabilities, grab those awesome 3D glasses, and experience the NBA game you love with an extra layer of depth (an extra dimension even!) to what many have hailed as the deepest, most immersive, and best sports game of this generation.

Many have been lucky enough to play the Best Buy 3D exclusive extensively over the past couple of months. This has led to the question of what goes on behind the scenes to make 3D possible in NBA 2K11. So I got together with Visual Concepts, the creators of NBA 2K11, and asked them!

All 3D effects come down to one simple idea: make each of a viewer’s eyes see a slightly different image and you can create the illusion of depth on a 2D screen. Technology to create 3D movies evolved from two-color images, called anaglyphs, into the more modern projection systems that use differently polarized light. Most of the new 3D televisions use a technique called “alternate-frame sequencing” in which they first display the image for one eye and then display the image for the other eye, holding each image on the screen for 1/120th of a second. To make sure viewers see the correct images with each eye, glasses that cover-up one eye in exact synchronization with the television display, called active-shutter glasses, are used. What’s most exciting about the new technology is the quality of the images it produces. The new generation of active-shutter HDTVs let us make a 3D game using full resolution HDTV images at framerates up to 120Hz.

To properly drive one of these televisions, NBA 2K11 must create two separate images every game frame–one for each eye. We create a virtual stereoscopic (two-eyed) camera and render the whole scene in full HD resolution twice, once for each eye of the camera. These two images are packaged together and delivered to the television as one “frame” which the television decodes and displays as two consecutive images, one for each eye of the viewer. Just in case anyone has a pair of the old-school [red-and-blue] 3D glasses lying around, NBA 2K11 will render using the anaglyph method as well.

The intelligence of the Visual Concepts guys, in programming NBA 2K11 as one of the finest sports games to be playable in 3D, is remarkable. And from personal experience, it’s absolutely amazing how your player literally jumps off the screen when going for a thunderous dunk. Or maybe a certain President in 3D? It must be witnessed to be believed!

I’d be remiss to mention that some other minor tweaks, including some updates to our online experience, are also included in this update. These changes should enhance the experience. So make sure to grab it and get to some 2K11 gaming immediately!

As always, thanks to the great people at PlayStation for giving me this time to talk to you about the latest NBA 2K11 update. And of course, thanks to you passionate Sony fans who have helped us make the NBA 2K Franchise what it is. Development for NBA 2K12 is already well underway and it’ll be October before we know it! How do we take it to the next level? Mark sure to follow us on Facebook to see exclusive info for the NBA 2K Franchise in the coming months.

I’ll be taking questions below so feel free to ask any follow-up questions. Thanks for reading!

  • 11:04 AM EAST coast, no Update.

  • I’ve been trying to update my NBA 2K11 but I don’t get the notification when I start the game. Is there any limitation/requirement in order to get the update? is this global? or is it US? did it went live?

  • You’re getting slammed ronnie, got anything to say to the masses… not your fault… pressed delete instead of enter… a dragon from the land of Lilliput is holding the update hostage and won’t let it go unless three noble knights present the dragon with a gift of lemonparty and honey… common dude say something??!!??!!??!!

  • Still nothing 11:10 am in Chicago…maybe if I stop trying to update then it will work.

  • ummmmm…….so…..where is it?

  • Hi Ronnie

A lot of ppl still waiting (2:45 PM CST)… At least tell us when the patch is going to be released.

    Thx.

  • I’m going to go ahead and release a statement for them since they can’t, and no I did not hear this from any official source… this is based upon my own assumption. The members who be cannot make a comment due to the risk of loosing their job, so we will not be told when it is going to be released. We will find out either when one of us checks ourselves or when we hear a statement stating why they are not going to release it. Until then I will check from time to time and will inform you guys unless I hear it for you first.

  • Called 2K Sports, they said I’m not the only knucklehead calling them asking where’s the 1.3 patch… go figure. I’m going to assume it’s a Sony issue not pushing the update calling Sony now for info on weather or not they have the update or if 2k Sports dropped the ball on this.

  • Good work Bronx. Still no update as of 6pm eastern

  • 2K says Sony’s got the patch. Called Sony, and asked to be escalated to tier 2, they told me they do not have the ability to contact tech support(the actual software engineers) and find out status of such matters, and even if they could they are not allowed to release info about future PlayStation releases(even though this is not a Sony patch or release, just 2K’s data on their update servers). Very disappointed at Sony, and this pushes me to buy from Microsoft from now on. Way to go Sony, keep in mind the 360 has 3d SBS as well. Probably a better option for us next time. I can’t believe I’m actually promoting MS, but Sony just told us all to suck it, the consumers… go figure.

  • well i keep getting disconnected from 2k server and no up date still and its 6:06pm stl time and i’m about to go crazy

  • Well don’t get nuts. We know PS3 is better. Lets just pretend that the release isn’t due for another month, that way we will stop going nuts over this. Although I guess 2k could always upload the patch online, and we can manually update via usb flash drive.

  • Asked Sony about that and they said it wont load a patch unless authenticated through the Sony’s update server. And for me 360 vice PS3 is a toss up, I got them both and for the most part I don’t notice any difference in gaming. Just my opinion.

  • lol patch is late and you get responses like #113

  • I just called Sony and 2K and they said wait until it comes out..

  • I’m sure the tons of calls are going to make whoever is in charge find the bottleneck in services and do some yelling.

  • i know ronnie’s twitter accout is going to need an update after all the tweets hes gonna get over our 1/16 patch let down

  • I don’t even know if he cares, he would have responded with something by now. Even if it was some corporate answer, but he is silent…….. you hear that…… it’s the sound of no patch, and no explanation why!!!!

  • you right bronx_bob.i’m going to see what tuesday bring with everybody going back to work.if we/i dont hear nothing then i’m done with this nba2k might as well play fifa 11 like i did play 2k

  • lol just be patient it will come eventually… you know that you wont leave the PS3 nor 2K so I don’t know why you keep making threats like that besides that noone really cares

  • 1 who’s making threats
2 if noone cares, then why are you commenting
3 I am a consumer and if I choose to go with another viable option it should be their concern. If you owned a business and customers were seeking other vendors for service you would be concerned. This is big business and money, think bigger pee wee.
4 you are a big tool

  • wsup ronnie i love 2k games period wish you guys would’ve tried to keep working on the college basketball series but hey no complaints here…as far as 2k11’s my player mode i really don’t like the restriction on certain attributes in the NBA everybody gets better with hard work i think restrictions should stand for certain positions such as center’s with 99 handle’s or PG’s with 99 standing dunk ability is there a chance this can be fixed in the near future

  • I am commenting because you keep posting nonsense when the only thing you have to do is just be patient. what OTHER service are you looking for? NBA 2K11 with 3D is PS3 exclusive. Yeah, I’m a tool.. that sure shows your maturity. Read your own comments buddy… quoting you.

  • Hey Ronnie. Ive been playing the NBA 2k series since the day it first came out on Dreamcast. Loyal supporter. I always have suggestions and things i feel that can help make the game quality better and more realistic. not saying it isnt good but everything can always be better.

For example. Next year you should add a feature in timeouts where you can choose who you want to inbound the ball. How nice would it be if you had 1 second left in the game down 1 and you could choose your inbounder and make sure he is a good passer to give you a better chance of a good look or a better thrown lob inbounds play.

  • Ronnie, re: the MyPlayer autoplaycalling feature I understand why you guys implemented this, but for users like me who love to control the plays (whether my player sucks or not) it’s a serious hinderance…

In real life, if I’m not the superstar on my team and I keep calling for the ball, I should be subbed out. But we all know that’s not going to happen in the game, so why can’t you just offer us a simple solution: Make auto playcalling an OPTION. Why force us into using a feature that, clearly, is upsetting alot of longtime 2K fans?

Also, telling us we need to play the game, the way YOU want us to (increase team chemistry) when the game was perfectly fine before is a cardinal sin IMHO. :)

Regardless, I’ve simply ignored the updates since they were released. MyPlayer is way too fun to miss out on.

And if you’re reading this and haven’t played 2K11, don’t get me wrong.. it’s the BEST basketball game to ever come out. There’s just a couple issues many of us hardcore NBA 2K guys like me don’t agree with. :)

    Cheers!

  • DOWNLOAD IS AVAILABLE as of 6pm EAST COAST!!!! whoo

  • Finally!!!!

  • hey ronnie do you have a email i can send you my post. its 2800 characters of meaningful words lol. i would like to send it but this page limits me at 1250.

  • Ronnie:

First off thank you so much for making quality games I’ve been a fan since you guys came out and congrats on smashing “elite” AKA Live for the 11th consecutive time (I hope NCAA and NFL don’t sale their license to EA like this ever again!!) I’ve lost alot of close games because intentional foul is not working anymore. why is that?

  • Oh I forgot, I love the over the back foul thats authentic, but whats up with the over the back fouls when clearly my player is way too far or didn’t even foul. Keep making great games!!

  • I play 2k11 everyday since the day it was released, from Korea to Texas, lol. I love the My Player and Crew Modes. I only have one problem so far with the game which is why we cant talk in the Crew locker room before/in between games. Its small but I figure every other lobby lets you talk except that one. It would help with maybe going over what happened last game or just as simple as saying give me a sec to use the bathroom.
Thanks for the great game though. I’m addicted to My Player, lol. Julio Santos for MVP…

  • are you guys going to fix a cheap move by player like lebron or dwade that they post up a player and spin pass them and do another spin dunk? basically that move is like unstoppable when they spin though you.

  • what type of glassess will be need to see the game in 3D , because my red and cyan glasses aren’t working so I’m thinking I may need diffrent glasses and or play around witht eh settings.

  • Hey Ronnie two questions; first what would you consider to be the preferred settings for depth and 3D display to create the best view when playing 2k11 in 3D. Secondly, do you know if there are any plans to bring back the College Hoops series next year?

  • Found some bugs in My Player Mode.
I patched it up then continued my game (Rookie PF in Oklahoma Thunder):
    1. When you go NBA.COM – Headlines/Homepage, It says “Turkoglu fuels Thunder for a 30th win!” But the thing is… Turk is not even in our Roster!
    2. In Team Information – Schedule, select a past game and view box score, The Rosters are incorrect, the player list is wrong and even My own player is not there, hell, even Durant is not there!

  • i read another post where you addressed the arena music manager for ps3 and you said you were aware of the glitches.will there be a patch to fix the issue.how hard could it be.it was such a great idea its a shame to have to wait till next year to perfect it.especially since x box has no problems.when i set my play lists it works in game for like 2 minutes actually shuffling the tracks…then it goes silent the rest of way but you can here my custom songs playing very low in back round and regular menu music disappears all together. please fix this its so annoying to be so close to custom music…it made mlb the show so awesome.

  • hey i wanted to know when are you guys going to upgrade some of the gameplay… it is some what disappointing.. for example when you drive to the lane and go up for a dunk your guy either stops short or when he goes up for the dunk a deffender comes out of no ware and either blocks him or files him (and the file is not called) also it is nearly impossible to get steals and i would like to see some more dunking packages and lay up packages.. also more dribbiling moves should be included perhaps dribbiling packages because come to think of it everybody dribbles different.. (example derrick rose and rondo are 2 way different dribblers) thanks and hope to see an improvement on these concepts in 2K12.
