Upcoming Novel to Bridge Gap Between Resistance 2, Resistance 3

James Stevenson's Avatar Posted by Community Director, Insomniac Games

We wanted to be the first to bring you the exciting news that the Resistance series is expanding again, this time with a second novel from science-fiction author William C. Dietz. Resistance: A Hole in the Sky is set in the aftermath of Resistance 2’s finale and Lt. Nathan Hale’s death, and follows Resistance 3’s hero, Joseph Capelli, on his journey right up until the beginning of Resistance 3. For those of you who have been wondering about what happened after the shocking climax of Resistance 2, you won’t want to miss A Hole in the Sky when it releases this Summer from Del-Rey Books.

For those of you wondering what’s going on with Resistance 3 itself, you’ll be happy to know that we’re super busy preparing both Resistance 3 and Ratchet & Clank All 4 One for an upcoming media demo in London followed by the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco next month. We’ll be sharing new screenshots and gameplay video, and press will get their first hands-on impressions of both games. To keep up with all the latest, follow us on Twitter or “Like” us on Facebook.

That’s all for now – I’ll do my best to answer your questions in the comments!

We figure the spoiler statute of limitations is up – Especially since we are introducig Capelli as the new hero.

While I don’t mind reading – it’d be great to have some sort of 5-10 minute intro in R3 that details everything. I’ve never been a fan of going to another form of media to get important story points of a game I’m playing.

Either way, you’ll be able to get all of the critical info in R3. The novel is for folks who want the deeper dive into various events. The game will still be awesome even if you haven’t read the novel.

If I read this book, do I automatically learn an unlock code that allows Hale to rise from the dead, bury Capelli alive, and reclaim his throne as Hero?

I enjoyed the first novel, can’t wait for this one. It will give me something to do during the annual summer video game drought.

So how about July 6th for R3 instead of September 6th? There’s less competition for sales…

VixDiesel said:

@20 Yeah, I’m not keen on playing as Capelli either. He is quite possibly the worst character in the Resistance world. Was so pissed off at the ending of R2 and seeing the biggest d-bag in the world still standing there. Should have been anyone or anything else.

Capelli goes through a lot in the novel and 4 years between R2 and R3. Hopefully you will think he has changed for the better

You don’t pay attention to the PS Store very often do you.

PS Store updates in the evening some time after 5pm EST (but of late its been more like after 8pm EST). So you won’t see demos due out today until after the store updates. Just because your calendar says it is the 25th means that the store will magically show you the demos that are out for that day. It’s like a store, they first have to get it in stock before they can sell it to you.

You guys should do a Collector Edition for R3 and include a digital version of the novel :)

Can’t wait for the new R3 info

@20 MarkNMo
I support you 100000000%. I hope resistance 3 give us the ability to unlock a Hale skin for the single player. I hate Crapelli

VixDiesel said:

January 25th, 11:12 am

@James Stevenson: First impressions of him though were never even remotely positive. I would have preferred playing as Grayson even if Nathan really was KIA. Capelli just never got on my good side. He was a major tool. Every time he was on screen I wanted to punch him in the face.

I may get the book if most of this stuff won’t be covered in R3.

Maybe just maybe, if I get the book my opinion might change. Want to send me a free copy? :)

I bought the first book, The Gathering Storm, amd loved it. its hard to find a book that actually grabs my attention. This one did and im excited to find out William Dietz is writing this one as well. He wrote the HALO books and did a very good job. Cant wait to get the book when it releases.

shogunreaper said:

Comparing digital and physical stores is stupid, they are not and will not ever be the same. It’s not like they ‘just’ get the demos that day, they get them in advanced and decide what the best day it would be to release it.

Hi James, a fairly avid fan of the Resistance series here! Just wondered how you guys were finding the multiplayer side of the game to be shaping up – I know you tested it as staff for past entries but I’m interested in knowing your opinion of this one. How different is it, and is it nearly finished in dev?

In Metro 2033 they used salvaged weapons and they had bad accuracy and damage. Would Resistance 3 be like that?

ShredinSlash said:

I have loved the Resistance series from day 1, have most of the media of the series (have to get those comics, and the action figures will be a pass, not having my brother open them up “by accident”) and couldn’t wait for this novel to be announced, i read The Gathering Storm twice! William C. Dietz is a great author, glad you could bring him back for the second novel, and hope for many more!

I bought the 1st novel and remember eating a warm ham sandwich and drinking coffee just when Natha Hale, in the book, starts eating a ham sandwich and coffee in the SRPA barracks. It was awesome.

Anyways I cant wait and pick this up day 1

Are there any plans for Insomniac Games to do another community day like they did back in Oct 2009. I think that would be a great way to get some of your fans that live in your own backyard to see what you guys are doing. The last community day event was awesome. Keep up the great work Insomniac!

You know it’s been 5 or 6 years since I last read a novel (last time I read a novel was during high school). I was thinking about reading novels again. I was at Barnes and Noble and started to look at novel based on Video game (Mass Effect, Tom Clancy video game novel). I did have a glimpsed at Resistance: The Gathering Storm when I was at Barnes and Nobles, I will read the first novel and make it my summer goal. Thanks for announcing the second novel.
