Coming to PlayStation Plus: Sonic the Hedgehog, Spyro: Year of the Dragon, and ModNation Racers Full Game Trial

Hi everyone,

Hope you all had a nice Valentine’s Day. We’re continuing to spread the love around PlayStation Plus into March with four featured games, an early access demo for Playstation Move, and a discount on another PlayStation Network exclusive title – all coming to you on March 1.

Sonic

As mentioned in an earlier post about the arrival of the SEGA Genesis Collection, PlayStation Plus subscribers will get Sonic the Hedgehog for free and one month early from when it will be released to the rest of the PlayStation Network! Not that it needs much of an introduction, but SEGA is reviving the classic adventures as Sonic battles Dr. Robotnik for control of South Island. Speed through classic levels like “Green Hill Zone” as you unlock trophies in this piece of gaming history. The SEGA Vintage Collection also includes Streets of Rage 2, Golden Axe 2, Altered Beast and many more – all free for PlayStation Plus subscribers.

ModNation Racers (Lil Tinker)

In addition to Sonic the Hedgehog, we are offering downloads of a sequel of one of our favorite PSone series and a full game trial of one of our signature “Play, Create, Share” titles. We’re happy to release Spyro: Year of the Dragon, from Insomniac Games, which is the third installment in the PSOne series. This is a great follow up for any PlayStation Plus subscribers who downloaded Spyro the Dragon and Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage. Also, be sure to download the full-game trial for ModNation Racers, developed by United Front Games. With the highly active community there are tons of mods, karts and tracks to download and try out. PlayStation Plus subscribers will also get early access to the demo for PlayStation Move Heroes. Explore the familiar landscapes from the smash hit franchises Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, and Sly Cooper – ripped apart and rebuilt for the PlayStation Move Motion Controller.

Finally, our update includes a discount of 80% off on Blast Factor – one of the first PlayStation Network exclusives – and downloads for Enigmo (the new mini from Pangea Software) and Pix’n Love Rush, which are both being offered to PlayStation Plus for free two weeks prior to their release to the rest of the PlayStation Network.

As always be sure to check the full list of new items as well as items that are being taken down from the PlayStation Plus storefronts below:

  • Big update there!
    Tons of games for me too, and I can’t wait to play the next Spyro game. My girlfriend and I played the first two together when I got them on PS+, so now we can continue doing so with the third.
    Awesome.

  • So, the SEGA Genesis games are the free monthly games now? Answer that for us, please.

  • Booyah! PSMove Heroes demo! Need to pick Spyro 2 up via PSStore…

  • 1 hr. Modnation trial? So with load times that’s like 1 race?

    Spyro YotD is the only game in Spyro’s entirety I haven’t played so looking forward to that. (Spyro Enter the Dragonfly on Gamecube was an unplayable slideshow.)

    I have the Genesis Collection but as it’s the PS2 version and my PS3 isn’t BC… also doesn’t have Streets of Rage 2.

    Heroes on the Move hasn’t changed back to the good title yet? Oh well, early demo gives me time to consider 2nd Move purchase as I’ve already decide to get the game.

    PS+ has paid for itself, and still 8 months to go. nice

  • PS+ is not worth it. Sony needs to stop slacking off and start getting some new features in we need a better network and this is how it should be done.

    1)voice messaging
    2)chatrooom (using mics)
    3)Ability to change your username without losing trophies or downloads.
    4)prevent hackers from hacking into games.

    That is what we need SONY! If PS+ had all of this then it would be worth it.

  • Thanks Grace; very nice !

    Glad I decided to opt into PSN +; definately worth the price.

  • SPYRO AGAIN??? NOOOOOOOO PLEASE!!!

    Where are Castlevania Symphony of the Night and Metal Gear Solid???? Please, don’t do that with us sony, we want good games, enough spyro please

  • I’d like to echo what others are saying, the Genesis games are a nice bonus, but not at the cost of the games we usually get. We can already get 46 Genesis games for $20 on PS3 if we really wanted them and most have played these in one of their many re-releases. It doesn’t look to be happening next month, so I trust it won’t start.

    Anyway, nice update, PS+ has been a really great value for me and it looks like I’ll continue it for a long time to come.

  • Is this a joke?

    The 20-year old Sonic the Hedgehog is our free game? Seriously? I figured those Sega games announced earlier today were a bonus for PS+, IN ADDITION to the the usual stuff. Does this mean we are getting rehashed Sega games for the next six months? If so, that’s bull****. I didn’t sign up for Genesis Plus. I signed up for PlayStation Plus. I want PlayStation games, not old Sega re-releases of games that I played fifteen years ago. Many of us, including me, already have the Ultimate Genesis Collection on disc. If the next six months are rehashed Sega games I already own, consider me officially pissed off.

    And another damn month of Spyro!? How about some variety instead of dumping an entire series on us? That’s three months of PS1 games I have absolutely no interest in.

    Oh, and I noticed an ad on the PS Store for PS+. It said we get “free add-ons”. I had a good laugh at that one. I can’t remember the last I got an add-on, let alone one that is even worth giving a crap about.

  • Question… because we’re getting all these free Genesis games now, does that mean we won’t be getting any more featured PSN games? If so, that’s really too bad, because I’d much rather be playing a modern day PSN game rather than a game that’s 10 or 15 years old.

  • @50 Hell yeah!

  • Wow, sounds great – can’t wait!

  • I’m not a forum/blog type of person, but I just wanted to thank all the team behind PS Plus. It is really worth with all the content you give/offer us, thank you.

  • I already got Genesis Collection >.< oh well might check it out if its the games seprate with more trophies i might get it ;P either way SO happy to see 3rd spyro thank you :]
    Kinda wish to see some PS2 games hit the PSN, like I would love to see you guys release Primal to PS Store remastered (in HD/3D option whatever else you want to dress it up in) with Trophies. that'd be pretty cool. and I would love to see some other PS2 games like the DYnasty Warriors games hit PSN with trophy support and stuff and I to would love GTA:SA to come to PSN I would so buy it (as long as you add trophies of course ;P)
    anyways looking forward to this update! I agree PS+ is starting to shape up nicley and Im really looking forward to future things.

  • If the Genesis Collection games covers our quota for free games for that amount of time – that will kinda suck. I already have the Collection.

  • Well this coupled with buying Pixeljunk Shooter 2 and it looks like I’m set for gaming in March.

  • Looks like an ok update for me. Sonic is cool but so tired of it. I had it on the 360 when I had that. The 3rd SPyro is cool but still haven’t even started the first one. The minis are still something I could care less about. I’d rather get a free movie rental. The Heroes demo is cool but it’s just a demo so no biggie there. Oh well there is always next month.

    I’m still happy with getting Stacking. Lets see some more new games from Plus in the future. Anyways keep up the good work.

  • yes sony is #1, and just because of the free sonic games im going to buy the BTTF game

  • Also one last thing can we PLEASE start getting more responses from the staff on our questions. I’m always seeing so many great questions going unanswered. Like one of the big ones on here.

    Are these Genesis games going to be our PSN games for the next few months?

  • Spyro Year of the Dragon, all Spyros. they were all so much fun. Oh the good old days :)

  • PS Move heroes Demo= kick booty. Has anyone played Princess Fatty on PSP and is it comparable to the PS3 version? And as for the third installment of Spyro, that’s awesome. I’ve loved playing thru 1 and 2. PS+ is starting to really pay off and 2011 is starting to take shape and it is good shtuff.

  • Sonic for free? EFF YEA! Spyro 3 for free? EFF YEA! Pix’n love rush for free? EFF YEA! And to top it off, a PS Move Heroes Demo! I can’t believe some people say that plus isn’t worth it :D
    No regrets. I cant wait for this update.

  • After reading through the comments, I can’t believe nobody else is outraged that the next six months of free PSN games appear to be nothing but Genesis games…

    * Sonic the Hedgehog – Available March 1 – April 5
    * Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – Available April 5 – May 3
    * Streets of Rage 2 – Available May 3 – May 31
    * Golden Axe 2 – Available May 31 – July 5
    * Comix Zone – Available July 5 – August 2
    * Altered Beast – Available August 2 – August 30

    I did not sign up for this. As bonuses like Stacking, they would be great, but I bought Plus to get PSN games, not Genesis games. One Genesis game is fine. Two is okay. But six months of old Genesis games in a row in place of games created for PSN is absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable.

  • I have the same sentiments as everyone else. The upcoming Sega Genesis releases are very cool, I can’t wait to earn trophies for playing some of my favorite games of all time… but are we getting these at the expense of our monthly PSN titles?

    If so, that really sucks. I subscribed to the service so I could be exposed to great PSN titles and exclusives, not 15-year-old ports that I’ve bought one or two times already. The trophy support is nice, but I’d rather get something newer with my subscription.

    I really hope this isn’t the case, cause we’re stuck with it for at least the next six months.

  • Getting Sonic free is truly a gift! I can’t wait! PS Plus is great!

  • wow this is way too much. wow you guys are REALLY raising the bar. i have always loved “plus” and i will continue to subscribe so long as the service stays as it is. thanks!

  • I read on the UK PlayStation site that SOCOM: Special Forces is coming to BETA Trials for PS+ members. It’s in the Coming Soon.. ‘section’.

    Cheers!!

  • no no no no dont make all these old Sega games the regular monthly plus free games. that is total rip off and bs. I want the promised different games and NOT SEGA games.

  • and wat happen to the free avatars and dlc that was supposed to be there free for plus members monthly as advertised???

  • Man, more great news! This update contains not a single thing I own, which should apply to a bunch of people (many of us don’t own Spyro 3). That makes you guys… AWESOME.

    Also, I agree with @48. I’d gobble up some Kingdom Hearts avatars.

  • I never understood these 1 hour demos. you spend more time downloading he game than actually playing them.

    With that i would have loved to play the demo for Heroes, but i dont have Move. i really see no reason as to get it as the only game i would like to get (Eye Pet) doesn’t even have a bundle, but all other Move required games do?

    it would have been nice to at least try the game to see if getting the game and move would be worth it.

  • My guess is that there will be more PSN freebies than the Genesis ones. I am basing this off the fact that certain games are being released with a 5 week break in between. Don’t be surprised if we get something free between those 5 week breaks.

    Personally, those mini’s are FANTASTIC choices for free games. I hope everyone with PS3’s tries out Enigmo and Pix n Love Rush, they are great games.

  • @10, 41, 58, 59, 64, 65,78 Yeah, Sonic & the other Sega games may be on SUGC, but look at this way – Since these are individual downloadable titles now, they’ll have their own separate set of trophies, which should be rather easy to get. If you want easy trophies, might nas well download the game since it’s free, right?

    @78 specifically – they ARE all different games. They never said games from different companies or anything but Sega games y’know. Anyhoo, if you’re THAT dissatisfied, don’t renew your PS+ subscription, otherwise quit crying.

  • Am I the only one that can read? All you people asking if the Playstation Moves Heroes is free, It says that it is a DEMO. Why are ou guys still asking if it is a Demo.If you guys are going to write on a blog website maybe you should learn how to read first. Its Playstaion Moves Heroes Demo (Free To Playstation Plus Subscribers)

  • [DELETED] Sony!!! , i was so excited about this “free” sega games, but this are going to be our next PSN games for the coming months??? just when i thought that signed up with PS+ was a good idea (sam & max, Lead & Gold, Stacking) and now you come up with this [DELETED]

  • okay (cough) (COUGH) wow thats a boat load of stuff there for ps+ member’s . nice going . (cough) (COUGH) why is people’s complaining ? i think the people’s that’s complaining are none ps+ subscriber’s or xbox live gold member’s . LOL , sure be nice to be a ps+ member right bout now.

  • YES!!!!!!!!!! MY SECOND FAVORITE GAME COMPANY OF ALL TIME IS BACK!!!! THANK YOU PANGEA SOFTWARE FOR INTRODUCING ME TO VIDEO GAMES WITH THE EXCELLENT ‘BUGDOM’!!

  • so far i save over 200.00 on ps+ and discount . example. rival school avatar bundle = 9 or 10 dollar so = + 1.99 = wow that’s some saveing’s , sam & max demo download error = + personally apologise note from ps+ and psn store staff = redeem code for sam & max to KEEP = demo = full game = 30 sum dollar , and so on , also thanx for the free v-day gift. and hope the staff’s a wonderful v-day too . PROUD MEMBER PS+ , PROUD MEMBER PLAYSTATION REWARDS MEMBER .

  • the only complain i have is , WERE IS MY FREE EXCLUSIVE AOSXE AVATAR ? hope you guy’s fix this problem.

  • sony you can do that way:

    1 psn full game
    1 mini
    1 ps1 classic

    AND

    1 genesis classic

    cut a mini, but not replace the psn full game by genesis classic, PLEASE!!!!

  • Lookin’ forward to Pix’n Love Rush!. Might also pick up Blast Factor; I’ll try my friend’s copy, see if I wanna claim it for my own. Nice to see Spyro chuggin’ along, though I still have to beat even the first one (though my sister and friend have been runnin’ through it). I’ll be sure to take advantage of the Sega downloads, too, since otherwise I just have the Sonic Mega Collection, which, since I got my PS3 this last Black Friday (bundled with Modnation Racers), can’t play the disc (please, oh PLEASE, make PS2 emulation through PS3 a reality). Not sure if want Viewtiful Joe avatars: one the one hand, they’re undoubtedly viewtiful (this from a guy who got the BCR2 avatars because of manly moustache), but on the other hand, I don’t know that series well.

    Ah, Sony, keep PS+ on the up-&-up, and you just might have a repeat subscriber.

  • When are you adding Cloud Saving to PSN+ subscriptions?

  • Why all the complaining?? I have saved soo much money for being a + Member. Best Sup Ever!!!

  • Sonic!! Woooohoooo! :D

  • Please tell me that the “Demo” part was the mistake, as having
    PlayStation Move Heroes (Free to PlayStation Plus subscribers)
    would be too cool.

    If it is a demo it belongs in the “Featured Demo” section. Just saying.

  • Plus is like a rolling snowball of awesomeness. It’s the smartest purchase I’ve ever made on Playstation.

    I know I’m a broken record, but please consider giving Plus members a free download of Crash Commando from the awesome dev house, Epos.

  • I’d like to assume the sega stuff is just a fun offer they are giving us. I’d be irritated if it was our “free game” for the next few months.

    The other stuff looks pretty good. Might actually pick up blast factor at that price. Viewtiful Joe Avatars are pretty great too.

    However, I want to see Mega Man 3 hit the psOne imports section already. I believe they are up to 4 in Japan, I would like to see those hit in the next few weeks. They’re far superior to one and two IMO, especially 3.

  • What if I already own all of those games? And $5 clasic Sega games WOW sound like a really good deal.if your burning money for HEAT in the winter.

  • @91

    They are referring to Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection which is a PS3/360 game.

  • Ok, does anybody here really think 6 months of Genesis games is all PS+ members are going to get?

    We are supposed to get 3 games per month – PSN, PS1, mini (I know some people were upset b/c they thought PSN meant full retail game but seriously we were never going to get 1 $60 game every month, or even $30 Greatest Hits DL, for $50 for an entire year). Some people on here also complain that minis shouldn’t even count. If they replaced minis w/ Genesis games would it matter? Or Genesis games instead of those early really bad nowhere near classic nothing that anybody wants PS1 games? And since PSN games can not be in any way shape or form confused with 15 yr. old Genesis games what kind of moron – Sony employee or consumer – could ever confuse the two? Nobody, no matter how big a Genesis fan or PS+ fan they were, would renew or sign up for PS+ if all we got for the next 6 months were 15 yr. old games. Nonsense.

    Your outrage is so misguided I don’t even know why I wasted my time.
