Today, Sony Computer Entertainment released the following statement:
Notice: Unauthorized circumvention devices for the PlayStation 3 system have been recently released by hackers. These devices permit the use of unauthorized or pirated software. Use of such devices or software violates the terms of the “System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System” and the “Terms of Services and User Agreement” for the PlayStation Network/Qriocity and its Community Code of Conduct provisions. Violation of the System Software Licence Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System invalidates the consumer guarantee for that system. In addition, copying or playing pirated software is a violation of International Copyright Laws. Consumers using circumvention devices or running unauthorized or pirated software will have access to the PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through PlayStation 3 system terminated permanently.
To avoid this, consumers must immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from their PlayStation 3 systems.
What this means to you
Circumvention devices and game piracy damage our industry and can potentially injure the online experience for you, our loyal PlayStation customers, via hacks and cheats.
Many PlayStation.Blog readers have asked how we intend to deal with these incidents that they have been reading about in the gaming press, and this is our initial response.
By identifying PlayStation 3 systems that breach our guidelines and terminating their ability to connect to PlayStation Network, we are protecting our business and preserving the honest gameplay experiences that you expect and deserve.
Rest assured, this message does not apply to the overwhelming majority of our users who enjoy the world of entertainment PlayStation 3 has to offer without breaching the guidelines detailed above, and we urge you to continue doing so without fear.

the only thing I didn’t like about sony was that in order for you to use netflixs u have to log on through psn…
but on my Nintendo Wii i can log on like nothing so I use netflix on it lol
so sony cant do that cause they dont own netflixs…

I agree that piracy and tampering is wrong and effects everybody. I believe purchasing things, that people spend hours and months working on, is the ultimate compliment to pay to them.

According to Sony none of us own our console and cannot do what we want with it without the fear of being sued. If you people really understood the truth about what geohot has done and why, you might look a bit more intelligent. I 100% agree piracy and cheating should not be tolerated, and I also agree that Sony doesn’t have the right to control what “owners” of PS3s do with their consoles so as long as it doesn’t involve piracy or disruption of the Playstation Network.
Update after update of nothing but security fixes is not making your customers happy, perhaps you should start listening and acting on what your customers want. I’ve been a die-hard Playstation fan since the first Playstation, but your recent actions have really cast a bad shadow on you as a company.

I think Kevin Butler should knock Geo Hots on his stupid ass. People who enjoy PS3 need to do whats right by them in order to assure great games in the future. Hackers don’t care about the future of gaming. They care about there on needs and their on fame.
wvnative is a punk. They hack the PS3 because they believe they should be entitled to “more”, EVEN THO many hackers claim they never play their PS3 or even use it at all.
Hackers are fools who can’t be satisfied with what they have in front of them, so they open it up and the collateral of doing so ruins the experience for every single legit gamer out there. They don’t think about moving the industry forward, they don’t think of how their actions will hurt those around them, and they simply don’t care.
Sony has been steadily improving the PS3 ever since it was launched. So if that is their excuse (which it isn’t), then they are WAY out of place.
Keep up the good work, Sony. Ban those people off the edge and back.

Correction currently your pissing me off with these frequent required mandatory updates with mostly patches.

I was shocked to see it myself while even more shocked to see it all over the internet on thousands of gaming blogs and tech blogs. It may just possibly be the biggest mistake a PR guy could ever make. Can I have his Job?

Can’t say I disagree. I just hope your next course of action isn’t something incredibly stupid like require serial numbers (which are easily cracked/forged) or use some form of copy protection (which is easily cracked and really only hurts legitimate end users). Yes, these are both points that end users are well familiar with but apparently the gaming companies have yet to get their heads out of their rears and realise this. If things go that way, I would probably end up getting rid of my PS3 and making my Xbox my primary console (provided they don’t do something stupid in a weird “gotta copy the copetition!” move).
According to George Hotz, the guy who hacked the PS3 (and who Sony have an impending day in court with) he originally did what he did as retaliation for the removal of the ‘Other OS’ function.
While I don’t condone piracy (it’s bad for everyone – look at the lack of third party support for the PSP, a direct result of rampant piracy) it’s fair to say that Sony are partly responsible for the current PS3 situation.
Removing features from a system that people have bought in good faith is bad business practice and unethical. Removing a feature that is beloved by exactly the kind of minority userbase who have the means to hack a, supposedly ‘unhackable’, system is just plain short-sighted.
Listen to all you Sony corporate lapdogs. Unbelievable. You all seem to think that jailbreak/CFW == instant cheater + pirater. I have homebrew capabilities, yet I don’t steal games. In fact, I just bought the Back To The Future game bundle today. I could have easily pirated it, but I didn’t, cause that’s not how I work. However, I do believe that losing more features than gaining isn’t exactly an improvement (OtherOS anyone?). PC’s allow you to watch pirated movies, play illegally downloaded games and do all sorts of illegal stuff. In the end, it’s up to the user to make responsible choices. The same holds true with a homebrew enabled console. If all it could do was run illegal copies of games, then fine, ban it and sue the hacker. However, if it’s capabilities reach further than what a mere pirate wants, then let that pirate be held accountable for his actions, but that doesn’t mean everyone who runs CFW is interested in such narrow-minded functions.

i like what generalplot said… theres people on cfw that still buy games on psn and for sure they probably dont cheat online… ive only heard of one game that uses cheats call of duty thats it… and yes i hate it when they cheat, so all i do is quit and look for one that doesnt… thats all
#135 i agree with you mostly but it is sony’s right to change add or remove features they see fit. i never used the other os option as i just wanted it for games and movies. and thats all sony provided was a game and movie system it wasn’t put out to be a sole computer system and they removed it due to the ability to copy and pirate bluray data. sony recognized that problem and took steps to fix said problem. it does suck for those who used the other os for non illegal use but it was safer to remove it from the system. so both sides have a relevant cause for disapproval its hard to find a middle ground with something like that
if sony would add some sore of homebrew ability but still be able to block the use of pirated ps3 games then i believe both sides would be happy. but in the real world that dosent happen someone is alyways going to be mad

Its the whole reason as to why the psp was hacked. Sony didnt (and still doesnt) care for it. thats the main reason as to why hackers are trying to mod the psp go since Sony neglect to even support the thing (evidence as the psn updates barely any “good” psp games come out)
If sony actually took the time to know what us (the consumers) wanted maybe they would see less piracy. i mean the whole reason hackers want to hack the Psp go is to play games that are still only available in UMD only.
Now i know this is for the ps3, but still a Sony product is a Sony product. And hopefully these Blog people give word to the higher ups of whats really happening.

I am glad this wasn’t swept under the rug and not talked about by Sony. Years ago I owned a Sega Dreamcast console and was very angry and upset that the console fell to ruin do to piracy. I value the PS3 very much and hope that it won’t suffer the same fate. You have my full support of ridding the Playstation community and network of these thieves and cheaters.
sony should add some sort of homebrew capability and block pirated games so ur rite zombiewraz people might enjoy that more.

I also want to point out that I’ve spent a considerable amount of money on PSN, and by banning my account and/or console is actually detrimental to Sony. I still make purchases (I’ve bought a custom avatar (Norman Jayden Heavy Rain), the LittleBigPlanet dynamic them, and about 15 PSN games, including the recent purchase of Back To The Future bundle I mentioned earlier. I don’t really do online gaming (I’m old fashioned and have always preferred to have it just be me VS the machine) and disabling my ability to get online only keeps me from making future purchases. The only thing I use PSN for is the store to download demos of games (to try before I buy) and buy PSN games and content.
Zombiewraz you miss the point. “patches are fine when they are adding security” Hmm… yeah security from hackers, that helps me alot. I don’t wish to hack my ps3 for many reasons or ever thought of it.
Point, less useless updates and more powerful updates. Hackers are just going to keep circumventing, why make more work in patching? They already have the they code, so even if they get team failoverflow and Hotz, there are mire hackers out there that would take the lead. Then legally, Sony can only get so far, a new strategy is needed. Would sound better to update the PSN store to where it simple doesn’t recognize certain code. They can circumvent the hardware but they can’t hack the network.
i agree with Generalplot, there is too much conflict between unauthorized software and pirates but yet generally the two would be stuck together.
