Resistance 3 Multiplayer Revealed, Beta Later This Year

James Stevenson's Avatar Posted by Community Lead, Insomniac Games

Greetings from the PlayStation.Blog.Lounge here at the fabulous W Hotel, across the street from the Game Developers Conference in downtown San Francisco. As this post goes live, we are revealing our all-new multiplayer for Resistance 3. We’ve said all along we wanted Resistance 3’s MP mode to bring the best of both Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2’s MP and co-op modes, and you’re about to see just how we’ve managed to do that.

Resistance 3: Fort Lamy Action Arena Battle

Resistance 3 will feature 16-player Human vs. Chimera deathmatch and objective-based modes set in locations across the globe. That may seem somewhat jarring after the 40 and 60-player mayhem in RFOM and R2. Rest assured though, our biggest motivation in determining our new player count was the fun times that we and the community had on maps like RFOM’s Busyard and Rooftops, as well as the Bayou House and San Francisco maps in Resistance 2.

Resistance 3 will offer a very deep and customizable progression system. Players can create their own progression paths through multiplayer, spending their hard-earned points to customize loadouts that fit their unique playstyle. We learned a lot from Resistance 2 co-op in terms of giving players the ability to create specific roles in a team and level up different abilities – which you will see with the various active tactical and support abilities, as well as the new personal and combat attributes.

Resistance 3: Fort Lamy Action Doppelganger

Resistance 3: Fort Lamy Prison Messhall Resistance 3: Action Cell Battle

For instance – each player can choose and level different support abilities – such as a Bubble Shield, Ammo Beacon (give ammo to teammates) or Radar Beacon (enhance your team’s radar). There are also tactical abilities you can use against your enemies, such as the Doppelganger (projects an image of you nearby to distract enemies) or Dash (an explosive burst of speed to evade enemy attacks).

Furthermore, each player can select and level a personal attribute and a combat attribute. These range from the ability to have leapers bust out from your corpse, to start with more weapons in your arsenal, to reloading or firing at a faster rate. You will be able to truly customize your character loadout to fit your own unique playstyle in Resistance 3.

We’ve been working on this new direction for close to two years now, polishing and refining our maps. We’re having a ton of fun playing Resistance 3 in the office every day. We will be bringing a multiplayer beta to PSN later this year, so stay tuned to our newsletters (Check today’s for the first news on Insomniac’s Community Day on March 29th!), Full Moon Show podcast, Twitter feed and Facebook page for all the latest updates!

Please tell me you haven’t forgotten about James Grayson. He needs to be another spin-off or part of the main titles.

Is this a fake post? Where is Infinity Ward or Treyarch who devised this article? April’s fool isn’t for another month…8v8, personal and combat abilities? Might as well title the game COD: Resist buying the 3rd Installment. I truly loved RFOM and played the crap out of that game, but 2 disappointed me, and 3 I’m not even the slightest interested in purchasing it. I’m highly upset at how the serious could have been and how it turned and will turn out. Halo sold the doo doo out of their games and what did they change? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Why Insomniac…why did you turn to the darkside of FPS? Was it because noobs and people without skill complained RFOM 1 was “too hard”? I truly hope someone will branch out from the company, bring along all the programming from RFOM 1 and create a true sequel to the game. You lost a sale here and with many of my buddies releasing R2 and this article….I’m depressed now…

8/8 = CoD (team deathmach)
The resistence 1 and 2, the multiplayer is a best multiplayer on Ps3. I want game fun for me and my friends online, i dont want a game more “tactic”, i want game FUN (MP). If want a game tactic, i play CoD BO or Killzone 3 (i have this games too)
The map “more big” for 8 players, for kill one guy is too dificuld, becouse always wins sniper, and future = 8 sniper/8 sniper.
I dont know if buy R3, the MP 8/8 is a disappointing.

The game goes on sale september?

Will there be any type of Offline and Online Cooperative Mode announced aswell? Because, I enjoyed Resistance 2 mainly because of the cooperative… Maybe you guys could do Online and Offline Co-Op Campaign?

40 players was a perfect number in R:FoM. I wonder if that game still has a community… i’ll check it out later tonight. >.>

This is generally really bad news though. Hopefully they don’t drop the dedicated servers for P2P. The fact that they dropped the co-op from R2 is really disappointing too.

That whole blog post was just a punch in the face for me. R:FoM forever.

But seriously, if i have to deal with garbage P2P gaming like in CoD or MGO, im renting this for the single player and buying it used later on. As a resistance fan since launch, this is all terrible news.

In terms of questions.
– Is there going to be custom games list like in R2 along with matchmaking or is it going to be just straight matchmaking?

– For those that don’t want to play with traits or killstreaks is there a separate playlist for that, if there is a custom games feature can they be disabled?

-What about split-screen, how many players can one console occupy per online/offline match?

LilWayneSuckz said:

March 2nd, 7:04 pm

Were you people who want to 32 player online playing the same game I was? It was completely disjointed and the redeeming quality of Resistance 2’s multiplayer were the co-op modes.

It was hard to jump into a game because the few lobbys available were either full or the game mode was something completely uninteresting for me.

Now knowing that the multiplayer will have matchmaking and various game modes, this may be the most solid FPS on the PS3 with online/offline co-op in the single player (with matchmaking), deathmatch matchmaking and a much more streamlined gameplay experience I am anticipating this game much more than Killzone 3 and whatever other FPS is coming to the PS3. I’m amazed at how the people who made “Ratchet and Clank” were able to make such a gritty shooter.

Why take away the Resistance 2 style co-op? That was the sole reason I got my monies worth out of that game.

This is downright depressing. I honestly wish that RFoM had been like Call of Duty and apparently Resistance 3 because I would have hated it and never looked forward to its sequels. But instead it is my favorite multiplayer game and its sequels are only related because they have Resistance in the title. I know it’s not out yet and one opinion is not relevant but I’ve seen enough to know that it’s nothing like the original. This will be the first Insomniac game I do not buy, even if there’s another 50k tournament.

Servers please!!! So no split screen co-op for the campaign?!!

Ghost_Shrimp said:

March 2nd, 7:23 pm

Please tell me it isn’t going to be 16 people randomly running around a small map and shooting each other in the back??? That is what it looked like on the video I just watched. Where is the fun and dynamics in that?

Why do all the developers need to copy Call of Duty… I know it’s extremely popular and you guys want a piece of that but the COD fanbase is glued. Instead how about you make a multiplayer FPS that caters to those who don’t care for the simplicity of COD.

Oh well I bet the singleplayer will be awesome at least.

I second blakepro’s comment!! Please bring back R2 co-op mode!! I love campaign co-op, but for replayability we also want R2’s co-op mode, it was the best!

Will the multiplayer be split-screen online compatible? R2 is one of the few games supporting this feature and we love it!!

Arcadian_Rebel said:

Sounds good! I’m fine with only 8V8 multiplayer as long as there is a lot to do like in Call of Duty.

Also, splitscreen by chance?

I have highly skeptical about R3. R2 failed me badly and I highly dislike R2 for fact that Insomniac had taken out all the features (1-hit option, CTF, 2-players co-op..etc) that made Resistance franchise famous. I sold R2 back to Gamestop 2 days after obtaining it.

Am I going to buy R3? Absolutely not. R2 had failed me badly and there no way of recovering from it. Insomniac had lost me as a fan when they let games like R2 to be sold in game stores. Don’t get me wrong, I still have R1 and been playing it since it hit the store.

Resistance 3 is an ABSOLUTE NO BUY FOR ME. I an not gonna fall for the hype like i did with Resistance 2. God what was i thinking when i spent those 60 buck >:(
Not only was the campaign horribly dull, but the competitive mode! Every single day I play I curse it around fifty times! That F*****g 10 thousand kills trophy is the the worst trophy I have ever come across! im not even near the 6 thousands and i have already cursed that trophy around 100 thousand times
Also I cant stress enough how pissed im at those damn Wraith jumpers! WHO WAS THE ONE WITH THE BRILLIANT IDEA OF ADDING THE WRAITH TO THE COMPETITIVE ARSENAL! I bet i been killed by them around 90 percent of the time. I have no words for how disgusted i get every time I see the entire opposing team, carrying Wraiths!
Lastly the matchmaking. GOD KNOWS RESISTANCE 2’S MATCHMAKING IS THE WORST I HAVE EVER COME ACROSS!!! There is no excuse for having to spent 10+ minutes waiting to get into a ranked game.
Like getting that “NO GAMES FOUND” half the time isn’t bad enough.
After i get all the trophies from Resistance 2 i will never look back at another Resistance game in my life! no new installment will ever make up for what i been through (SO FAR)!

I must say good job guys. The MP looks AMAZING just from that one video. I myself am glad that there’ll only be 16 players per match now. I never liked having 60 players in a match myself. Everything was just way to clustered and chaotic.

I’m really liking the customization too. I always find a certain role that I like playing and am glad I have full control over what I have and use. I don’t like that I have to play as X role to use X weapon. This is my biggest problem with KZ3. I like the infiltrator, but I really wish I could use the M82 with it. However I don’t like the Tactician at all, but that is the only career with the M82.:(

Also one quick question will there be split-screen support in the MP?

Again thank you and everyone else at Insomniac for listening to the community and doing what is best for the game. I am more hyped then ever for Resistance 3 now. You guys will be getting my money on September 6.

how is the health system going to work? is it full regen or is it going to be a hybrid like it was in R:FoM? i really loved the hybrid system and i feel like FPSs have lost a lot of personality by going full regen.

that being said, i trust whatever you guys have decided to do and am really excited to get my hands on R3. Oh! and community day is on my birthday!! it would be awesome if i could make it. im in Sac, CA so its not TOO far. maybe i’ll see you all there :)

I just watched the MP gameplay vid, and I hate to say it, but I am kinda disappointed with what I saw.

After those live action teasers I though R3 was going to be gritty, moody, and real.

The only thing taken from Fall of Man is the weapon wheel apparently. FoM will always be one of my favorites this gen, but R2 left me underwhelmed and I can’t say I am feeling hopeful for R3.

totally bummed. :(

Sorry about that guys, I just saw that they you’ll have a lot more different skill type things. I watched the MP footage and I gotta say I’m thoroughly impressed, the graphics look really really great and it looks like a hell of a lot of fun. I really hope you guys implement Move support, it’s absolutely fantastic on KZ3. Again, I’m really looking forward to this game, I <3 resistance.

Yes, to Leapers storming out of my lifeless body! I’m liking all the little things Insominac is doing with this title, One major thing I like is how the maps will be of places around the world and not just the campaign because pretty much every shooter out there has all there maps ripped straight from the single player portion. I mus… WILL BE IN THIS BETA! As soon as I find out how >.>

Stud_Kick_Ass said:

March 2nd, 11:28 pm

Let me get this right, there’s no 8 person online co op like in Resistance 2? That was the best part of the game, apart from the huge fights; it was the only redeeming feature after a lackluster single player experience.

Wait I don’t get is why you’d remove that AND 60 player multiplayer. 90% of the time in Resistance 2 there was something happening, in that Resistance 3 video (posted on g4tv) it just looks so empty and basically nothing was happening apart from a few one on ones.

I, along with many other now will no longer be buying this game. The 8 player co-op missions and 60 player multiplayer was the only good thing about Resistance and you’ve removed both of them.

No buy.

and more important…. i have notice developers has thrown away the mode of LAN PARTY GAMES…. how about u guys make the difference in here???

NO internet – 8 friend in a house + (2)RESISTANCE 3 + 2 ps3s connected to 2 tvs playing splitscreen 4 vs 4 + Pizza = TOTALLY AWESOME LAN PARTY NIGHT! EVER!

[DELETED], I’ve never seen so much whining. Yeah, the 16-player multiplayer does throw me off a bit, but who the [DELETED] cares?

EVERY GAME has a brainless shoot-for-all. If scaling back this one means more attention on the parts of the game that can actually be unique, to [DELETED] with multiplayer.

Campaign co-op, innovative weapons, solid story, unique enemies, interesting characters. Call of Duty’s still right there for all the simpletons.

I was expecting this to be more revealing from the way the article was written. IE;

“And you’re about to see just how we’ve managed to do that”

All I got from this article was that you guys reduced the player count from 60 to 16 (lame) and that co-op has some new stuff… I don’t care about co-op, give me the meat on the competitive mutiplayer!

I want to know if you guys have improved upon R2 or not and gave us more options for customizing weapons, attachments and abilities. And most importantly, not being limited to a simple boring class setup.

Vagabone said:

March 3rd, 1:31 am

You learned a lot from R2 co-op and you removed it completely, great. And did it ever ocurr to you that most of the people that buy and play your game have more that just a friend for a co-op experience?

You say you learned a lot from previous games player count and you reduced it drastically (shame on whoever thought it would be a great idea). Looks like you just want to alienate more and more of your fans *sigh*.
