Resistance 3 Multiplayer Revealed, Beta Later This Year

Greetings from the PlayStation.Blog.Lounge here at the fabulous W Hotel, across the street from the Game Developers Conference in downtown San Francisco. As this post goes live, we are revealing our all-new multiplayer for Resistance 3. We’ve said all along we wanted Resistance 3’s MP mode to bring the best of both Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2’s MP and co-op modes, and you’re about to see just how we’ve managed to do that.

Resistance 3: Fort Lamy Action Arena Battle

Resistance 3 will feature 16-player Human vs. Chimera deathmatch and objective-based modes set in locations across the globe. That may seem somewhat jarring after the 40 and 60-player mayhem in RFOM and R2. Rest assured though, our biggest motivation in determining our new player count was the fun times that we and the community had on maps like RFOM’s Busyard and Rooftops, as well as the Bayou House and San Francisco maps in Resistance 2.

Resistance 3 will offer a very deep and customizable progression system. Players can create their own progression paths through multiplayer, spending their hard-earned points to customize loadouts that fit their unique playstyle. We learned a lot from Resistance 2 co-op in terms of giving players the ability to create specific roles in a team and level up different abilities – which you will see with the various active tactical and support abilities, as well as the new personal and combat attributes.

Resistance 3: Fort Lamy Action Doppelganger

For instance – each player can choose and level different support abilities – such as a Bubble Shield, Ammo Beacon (give ammo to teammates) or Radar Beacon (enhance your team’s radar). There are also tactical abilities you can use against your enemies, such as the Doppelganger (projects an image of you nearby to distract enemies) or Dash (an explosive burst of speed to evade enemy attacks).

Furthermore, each player can select and level a personal attribute and a combat attribute. These range from the ability to have leapers bust out from your corpse, to start with more weapons in your arsenal, to reloading or firing at a faster rate. You will be able to truly customize your character loadout to fit your own unique playstyle in Resistance 3.

We’ve been working on this new direction for close to two years now, polishing and refining our maps. We’re having a ton of fun playing Resistance 3 in the office every day. We will be bringing a multiplayer beta to PSN later this year, so stay tuned to our newsletters (Check today’s for the first news on Insomniac’s Community Day on March 29th!), Full Moon Show podcast, Twitter feed and Facebook page for all the latest updates!

  • Please guys don’t let the multiplayer be broken like call of duty.

  • After reading through the comments here I can see why this franchise went to [DELETED].

  • Hey brother James stevenson , In RESISTANCE : fall of man !
on the Air Vents u can FLy in many directions , Like the middel vent in Busyard if u remember !
So is there Airvents in Busyard map when u bring that map back to RESISTANCE 3 ??
Last point : how about RESISTANCE fall of man parties system ? i think RESISTANCE fom it’s self was Orderly system , unique system !
    Thank you !

  • Looks like a step backward to me. R1=40 Players Online, R2=60 Players online, R3=…16? great…looks like I might stick to R2 then. :(

  • I still logon and play online co-op to this day on R2 with two seperate accounts. To hear that there is no online co-op in R3 is a huge dissapointment. That alone makes me not want to buy this game. Then to hear your taking a huge step backwards to 8 vs. 8 is just mindboggling. Have you looked at the competition? MAG is running a platform that puts 128 vs. 128, thats right 256 players running in the same game. I think its time to step out of the 32 bit age and upgrade you software.

  • Just to have my say, for what its worth. I would like some clarity on the split screen multiplayer question. In R2 you had a unique system where my wife and I could log onto our own user names and play together. This really separated R2 from every other game out there. That and the 8 player online missions. Is there going to be something similar in R3? The reason I ask is, I can play team deathmatch and capture the flag and all those other games on COD till my hearts content. Is R3 going to be different? By the way, my wife hates COD but loved R2. It is the only game we both play. Please let R3 be a game we both can enjoy.

  • Send me an invite for the BETA. I can’t wait til this game comes out. Out of the mountain of games I have, I’m still playing R2!!

  • I’m a little late but does anyone know if the beta is for PS Plus members, or if it is invitation only, or just a open beta like Killzone3? More games should have a open beta like killzone 3 did.

  • They have not stated yet on who will get to participate in the beta.

  • James stevenson Sir,

Can I ask a favor? It is a small request.

Why can’t you guys give what us R:fom lovers want back? Bring this up into your next meeting and if it is advertised as being there this will be a def buy for me. How about you guys split up your playlist. Do what your doing now and what not, but have a classic/retro mode. By that I mean Rfom playstyle. all weapon pick ups minus starting carbine/bullseye. Same play and concept of R1. no perks class garbage. Give us what We want. PLEASE!!!!!! also in retro mode have all game modes as well. breach/assault (miss those) meltdown and ctf…….. Plus make those 40 player strong parties as well….. Shouldnt be that hard.

  • i really wanna play this game , i liee the other two games and waittin to see the new stuff in this one
