Crytek Talks Crysis 2 PS3; Multiplayer Demo Now Available

Console gamers didn’t get the chance to experience the first Crysis, a shooter known for making PC gamers feel self-conscious about the power of their graphics cards. PlayStation 3 owners won’t be left out of the follow-up, as Crysis 2 arrives on PS3 next week.

Recently I spoke with Executive Producer Nathan Camarillo about those trademark Crytek visuals, and about the new multiplayer demo, which just hit PSN last night.

PlayStation Blog: We know Crytek can produce on the PC. How do you utilize the PS3 to live up to the high PC standard?

Nathan Camarillo: It’s the core of CryEngine 3 that’s able to scale appropriately and we can adjust per platform exactly what we wanna get out of it. We want the exact same gameplay experience, the same fun, the same intensity, all the same visual information that you need to understand and play the game appropriately. It’s just a lot of under the hood magic.

PSB: One recent IGN article said Crysis 2 didn’t look very good on PS3. CVG/PSM disagreed. What’s your response?

NC: I’ve gone on the record saying that if you stick PS3 and 360 side by side I would challenge anyone to find any meaningful difference. I don’t see it at all.

PSB: Talk about 3D implementation Crysis 2 on the PS3.

NC: In Cry Engine 3 we have a really tricky implementation of 3D – we’re able to generate the 2nd image with little to no impact. We don’t lose visual quality, we don’t lose resolution. You get the same experience as you get in the 2D game, except it’s in 3D, which is better. It’s more immersive, it feels better.

The 2nd part of our implementation is: we don’t throw things out of the screen at you. We start at the TV screen and then push in. This avoids eyestrain and eye fatigue, because we want you to play this for hours and hours. If you’re playing single player it’s easily 10-12 hours for a good gamer to get through the game.

PSB: What should PS3 gamers be looking out for in the demo?

NC: In most games you’re mentally programmed to stick on the ground. If you wanna go one level higher, go find a ladder, go find some stairs. It takes until people see someone jump in front of them that they realize they can jump there. You gotta break the habit of being ground-constrained like in other games.

If it’s one story high, you can jump there. If it’s a story and half, you can jump and pull yourself up. So it really changes the speed and pace of multiplayer. I can’t wait for PlayStation 3 owners to get their taste of crazy, insane nanosuit multiplayer action.

That wait is now over – the Crysis 2 multiplayer demo is now available on the PlayStation Store, featuring two game modes on two maps. Try it out and share your thoughts in the comments.

  • You mean people actually got to play the demo? Wish I could but I can’t seem to connect to a match.

  • Please do yourself a favour and do NOT buy Crysis 2 on PS3. If you preordered, download the demo and see by yourself. And DO judge the game by the demo, since it’s your only possibility to judge the game.

  • about an hour trying to connect to server to even try and play still no go connection not available yet everything else runs fine. already turned off on this game and haven’t even played it yet, will wait for bargain bin which shouldn’t take long at the rate it seems to be slipping from favor.

  • Guys, guys! Is it really that bad?! May be this because they just roll in…. wait a couple of weeks and then only judge them… I hope this will get better.. I want this game for PS3! So Crytek you better work your butt off on release version.. Also I want to warn don’t be Microsoft’s lovely kissers it will not help you… respect every gaming community by providing equal product quality only then you will succeed

  • I will be pleased if you guys even delay release date because of this… The quality is what only matters…

  • the demo isnt working for me still… hasn’t worked yet, do people not want to play or what?

  • OK. At the risk of being different… I connected a few times, and when I could I thought it was a lot of fun. Not life changing (no game is, I think) but I love the mechanics of the game itself. Yes it’s difficult to melee kill but in most game its too damn easy to run around stabbing people which is total [DELETED] (think MAG or Black Ops). Meet me on the battlefield and bring your knife, I’ll bring an M16. Get the servers up to speed and patch the framerate issues and I’ll still buy it day one. Peace.

Maybe it’s cuz I have kids, but I don’t expect perfection out of the gate. I just want to be entertained…please.

  • I hate to jump on the dogpile– I don’t like to kick people when their down– but part of good development is working within the box afforded you. No bonus points for drawing outside the lines. Even the original Crisis didn’t do that right, what with even high-end PCs struggling to make it work.

Hell of a time to magnify the fact. It’s the same reason you don’t want someone from Dreamworks or Pixar running a dev. studio. They wouldn’t understand limitations.

  • THE CAKE IS A LIE!

That’s all I have to say.

  • still can’t get on

Please, Crytek has been claiming their engine bests Killzone2/3. They’ve also claimed that the PS3 version runs better than the 360 versions. What code were they using, and why can’t they illustrate their claims in a demo, if they’ve been doing so well since they’ve been bragging? They didn’t even show the PS3 version off till a little while ago, and IGN reported it ran terribly.

Sure, “HOPE” that they fix it, just as all other devs never fix this issue. They don’t know what they are doing with the SPU’s and did not spend the time in development. Its not going to fix itself in a week, and they will likely not even patch it. Dice, Rocksteady, the Deadspace team, and others have all managed to learn something from GDC conferences, and even sony themselves.

  • I would not mind if developers delayed some multiplatform ps3 games as long as they are just as good as the other versions.

  • This shouldn’t come to as a surprise to anyone! As it is a Multi-Plat game afterall! Though i did expect better from crytek; i have enough multi-plat games on the ps3 to know that we’ll never get a decent enough mutli-plat game! *sigh* :/ That’s why i buy them used! >:D and i’ll always buy new for the 1st party devs! ^-^

  • Strictly based on the demo build of the game the PS3 version looks last gen compared to the PC version. The 360 version is definitely better than the PS3 version, but PC is top dog.

  • The demo for Crysis 2 made the game a nice little shooter. Nothing near what it is being hyped to bed/ is at. Players seem like sprites. People are too small. framerate seems choppy, but not unplayable. The lighting is ok, the textures are ok, and the gameplay is good. Only thing, we’ve (PS3 owners) have had much better games; KZ3, and UC2, just to name a few. Again, this is just a demo, and they are just testing the servers I’m sure as with every mp demo (servers SUCK btw). Seeing how the game is just a week or so away from launch, I doubt there will be a new demo with an updated build. I’m skipping the game, but not what I experience from the demo, but the demo sure didn’t make me want it any more.

  • this is seriously unacceptable. boastful talk was just them being cocky without actual results. if this demo was ported from the 360, crytek lied about individual development across platforms and they suck at porting properly. if this demo is the actual build, they suck at developing on ps3 and they straight up lied to our face.

  • I played the demo last night and it took about 10 mins before I actually got into a game online.

It’s an ok game and the visuals are not bad, but I think I got spoiled by Killzone 3.

I loved playing with the Move and the Nav in Killzone 3 and I think I’ve been spoiled by this, as I can’t seem to play as well with the controller any longer.

  • I’am not impressed with the demo. The visuals are mediocre, its blurry, choppy, even at 1080p it still doesn’t look as good as I thought it will be.

    “Achieved with CryEngine 3”
Achieved what? a poor port, yes
PROVE ME WRONG WITH THE FULL RETAIL VERSION OF THE GAME CRYTEK

  • This is incredibly disappointing. Was so excited while downloading the demo but could not get into one match last night. Also, reading impressions from this blog plus some forums and it’s really disappointing how the PS3 version has turned out. And yet Crytek sit here and point blank tell us there are no differences in the console versions whatsoever. That’s insulting. The proof is right in front of our eyes. I personally was set to preorder the game after some reassuring quotes online from different sources other than IGN. But after reading impressions plus my experience of not being able to play one match soured me on the whole thing. I can’t see myself supporting this game at full price with this lack of polish.

  • All this game is, is a call of dookie with a nano suit, u got the lmg spray n prayer’s, a kill cam and a helicopter, i told crytek this and i’ ll tell them again there the new infinity ward/activision, copy n polish turd

  • The game is horrible i know that its just a demo but the game is so close for release and it looks horrible. graphics arent pushing the limits at all for the ps3 and it aint just graphics but gameplay is not quite good either, hit detection is off but really off and starting a game takes forever. Pop ups and frame rate issues ruined the game for me. Killzone 3 for the win. i really wanted to like the game but its not the case

  • Dissapointed with this, thought it would stand out from the 360 …iv’e played all three ports pc 360 and ps3 and this 1 is the worst ,frame rate, resolution, clipping …360 has them but the frame rate stays more constant…i’m not a fan boy i got all three and i’ll be getting the pc version. It wipes the floor with both in dx9…so when the dx 11 patch comes out it’ll be awsome.

    PS3 fat,
    xbox360 elite,
    Alienware m15x.pc

  • Wow I am extremely disappointed. I downloaded the demo but I guess I’ll just delete it. Didnt even try it out yet but having read all of this I’m not going to waste my time. Thank god I have Killzone 3

  • This is what happens when you blow hot air Crytek, it was you guys that built this up for PS3 users.

  • well after many many attempts i was able to play for 15 minutes and now just keeps kicking me out. Deleted….

  • 30 minutes in and the closest I got to a game was “Waiting for 4 more players”. When I said my expectations were very low in my earlier post, I still expected to play. Wasn’t much of a demonstration. Multiplayer demos are frustrating when you can’t even get into a game. Throw some bots in there or something. Give the player some target practice to warm up on while they wait. Let me see your game! What’s the problem?

Nice menu tilting with the right stick though. That is innovative. Future of the genre.

Give me a single player demo.

  • The graphics are terrible. it looks nothing like the screenshots. i cant even find a match

  • No love to the liars.

Crysis 2: Over hyped and under delivered.

  • Why? I hate when the 3D is inside the TV. I want a crap flying at me(literally) (not really). How is it supposed to be immersive if things are not, in a realistic scenario, are coming at you? LAME.

  • What I want to know is what happened to the matchmaking? I can get a game without fail within seconds on the Xbox 360 demo, but I can wait around for 30 minutes and it’ll never connect to a game on PS3. I am glad I own an Xbox 360 in this situation as while the game isn’t as great as the PC version on either console at least it looks half decent on the Xbox 360. Where did it go wrong Crytek? All I heard for years was the PS3 was to be the console with the best visuals and yet it isn’t.. Disappointing is an understatement.

  • I bet after the interview Jeff was like “hey would you guys like to post on the blog? nothing big maybe answer a few questions to promote crysis 2 some more.” and the guys from crytek were like “Noooo way man, we’ve seen what they did to slant six. you post it.”

  • been trying for 30 mins to get a game…………. and it tells me i lost the connection……….i think not, I DL @ 50Mbps and UL @ 4Mbps so they can jog right on cheeky fu**ers not impressed

  • Not a good start Crytek. U guys said ps3 would have the better end of the deal this time around and your demo turned out horrible. Tried using my fragfx shark which wasnt bad but the game itself was very blurry lots of jagged edges and tearing. I am cancelling my pre order and renting your game first to see if its worthy enough for my money. I hope it is guys, bin dying to play since u had the throne with crysis on pc. I never had a high end rig so i couldnt play it though. Please take this to heart guys and come out on top.

  • Lol, this was a funny Article to find.
    http://myniritori.com/news/crysis-2-for-ps3-not-well-received

I liked playing the game for the few minutes i got to enjoy without being disconnected.
If they fix the connection issues id get the game.

  • I found this on the Twitter of crysis:
If you’re experiencing Crysis 2 PS3 demo issues, check out this blog – http://www.ea.com/crysis-2/blog/ps3-demo-issues

  • wait….wait…wait one minute here. Both Treyarch and Crytek claiming that they care about the PS3 community and/or utilizing they PS3 to the max on the same day on the PS Blog? Is this like the unofficial funny blog posts day on the PlayStation Blog?

  • @BlooodyCow Hahahahaha, I guess so.

  • Business is business. And this is all talk. Crytek can say whatever they want, but the fact of the matter is, they’ve failed. I’ve played all three demo’s on all the platforms. Crytek was talking of the PlayStation 3 version performing better. That’s not the case. Xbox 360 demo suffers from texture pop-in on large scale and the PlayStation 3 version studders like a third grader with framerate. Crytek is just trying to sell the product but the fact of the matter is, its a sub-par attempt. It doesn’t push the console or he would say it looked better on the PlayStation 3. If it was the definitive game for PS3, it would look better than Uncharted, God of War and Killzone 3. But it doesn’t. No 360 game matches those.

  • I am currently playing the Crysis 2 multiplayer demo, and I have read all of these comments and honestly, I do not understand what the problem is. I think this just might be the best FPS game EVER to hit the PS3. Better than Killzone 3, Uncharted 2, and Black Ops combined.

My reason being that, I mean look at it. In this game, your soldiers can turn invisible. This is an intensely needed addition for something like Uncharted 2. Imagine how much more amazing Uncharted 2’s single and multiplayer would be if Drake had the ability to turn invisible at will! This is just one of many reasons why this game just might be the best around.

For instance, in Black Ops you fight zombies, but in Crysis 2 you fight aliens. Obviously, aliens are much cooler than zombies, as well as super soldiers. Super soldiers are probably the coolest thing around. Imagine if black ops had super soldiers. Maybe then it would have the chance to be as good as black ops.

Crysis 2 opened my eyes to how weak most FPS games have been recently, and it is a must own. Burn all of your other FPS people, this is the game to own.

  • There’s a reason the PlayStation 3 got the demo late. Because Crytek is stumbling to get it right. Its too challenging and they can’t hack it. That says a lot about what we can expect from the final product. Don’t support trash like this. Other developers work really hard and do really well and are underappreciated. Support them. If you have to play this, rent it. We shouldn’t have to put up with lies and crap like this. We should be infuriated someones trying to take advantage of us.

  • If the final product will be like the demo than this game will go down in history as a big fail. Not only did Crytek call out killzone and uncharted but they also said there game was the best graphics on console and that the Ps3 version will be the best game Ps3 users got.

  • “There’s a reason the PlayStation 3 got the demo late. Because Crytek is stumbling to get it right. Its too challenging and they can’t hack it. ”

Oh please hush, don’t get so arrogant that you have to make half hearted assumptions to prove your point.

The game plays and looks fine. Honestly, it’s a great game either way, if you can’t deal with some minor beta issues, don’t play it.

  • PASS. Keep giving the PS3 subpar ports and save me money 3rd parties.

  • Oh what a lie!

He said that there are hardly any difference between two console versions, what a load of rubbish. Check this out – http://bit.ly/gKcK2x

PS3 demo suffers from awful framerate problem that is almost unbearable and unplayable. I only played the demo for 3 minutes and exited in disgust. It’s just terrible!

Definitely going to give it a miss for PS3 and get the PC version instead.

  • This demo just killed my ps3 yesterday.

    :(

I got the flashing red light!

  • Will the full version include a feature that lets me wipe all the Vaseline off my nano-suit’s visor, or is this a feature that’s getting saved for the sequel?

CRYSIS 3 – BE THE WASHCLOTH

  • ima try the demo out i really hope its good because ive been wanting to get this game since awhile now

  • Demo is horrible, looks worse than Blops. Crytek must have been used-car salesmen before they got into video games.

  • best graphic wow

  • So its actually Free Radical that made this game right?

HAZE. Do we not remember how they hyped that to high heaven before it came out? History repeats and repeats.

    I’m out.
