Crytek Talks Crysis 2 PS3; Multiplayer Demo Now Available

Console gamers didn’t get the chance to experience the first Crysis, a shooter known for making PC gamers feel self-conscious about the power of their graphics cards. PlayStation 3 owners won’t be left out of the follow-up, as Crysis 2 arrives on PS3 next week.

Recently I spoke with Executive Producer Nathan Camarillo about those trademark Crytek visuals, and about the new multiplayer demo, which just hit PSN last night.

PlayStation Blog: We know Crytek can produce on the PC. How do you utilize the PS3 to live up to the high PC standard?

Nathan Camarillo: It’s the core of CryEngine 3 that’s able to scale appropriately and we can adjust per platform exactly what we wanna get out of it. We want the exact same gameplay experience, the same fun, the same intensity, all the same visual information that you need to understand and play the game appropriately. It’s just a lot of under the hood magic.

PSB: One recent IGN article said Crysis 2 didn’t look very good on PS3. CVG/PSM disagreed. What’s your response?

NC: I’ve gone on the record saying that if you stick PS3 and 360 side by side I would challenge anyone to find any meaningful difference. I don’t see it at all.

PSB: Talk about 3D implementation Crysis 2 on the PS3.

NC: In Cry Engine 3 we have a really tricky implementation of 3D – we’re able to generate the 2nd image with little to no impact. We don’t lose visual quality, we don’t lose resolution. You get the same experience as you get in the 2D game, except it’s in 3D, which is better. It’s more immersive, it feels better.

3dd

The 2nd part of our implementation is: we don’t throw things out of the screen at you. We start at the TV screen and then push in. This avoids eyestrain and eye fatigue, because we want you to play this for hours and hours. If you’re playing single player it’s easily 10-12 hours for a good gamer to get through the game.

PSB: What should PS3 gamers be looking out for in the demo?

NC: In most games you’re mentally programmed to stick on the ground. If you wanna go one level higher, go find a ladder, go find some stairs. It takes until people see someone jump in front of them that they realize they can jump there. You gotta break the habit of being ground-constrained like in other games.

If it’s one story high, you can jump there. If it’s a story and half, you can jump and pull yourself up. So it really changes the speed and pace of multiplayer. I can’t wait for PlayStation 3 owners to get their taste of crazy, insane nanosuit multiplayer action.

That wait is now over – the Crysis 2 multiplayer demo is now available on the PlayStation Store, featuring two game modes on two maps. Try it out and share your thoughts in the comments.

  • Jst played for about an hour to see if there was something I missed that the majority here sees. I do not see what the peoblem is. Its freaking gorgeous and fun as hell. These have got to be XCRAP fanboy plants to ruin PS3 sales. Not happening. And anyone else discouraged about buying it, remember the majority of people won’t post here or don’t know ps blog exists.

On a separate note…it’s still a pain to get in the rotation so that has got to be fixed. Other than that this game is superb.

  • Yeah I couldnt even get into a match, I was able to get into a lobby with other people once and then got booted out before I could even try the damn thing. PASS!

  • can’t even get in a game.

    such [DELETED].

  • @ 150,

I’m not a “Xcrap” fanboy. The graphics are nothing really special on ps3. Infact, after seeing KZ3, I think we’re all spoiled on what the Ps3 can do. When one plays a port of a multi-platform title, they are expecting a solid port of that game. I’m not a big FPS player but I think that Frame-rate drops are NOT good in a FPS game?

Now, the game play is decent, but its nothing revolutionary. Sniping is fun and quick to get some easy kills, Of course, its my opinion, but when a majority of people tend to say to avoid a title, I think the common sense to approach this title with caution.

You’re right about the whole blog thing. I’m sure the reviews will echo what everyone is thinkin’ about this game. Time will tell. Hopefully the devs can make some improvements on the frame-rate. Perhaps, we’re playing an old build of the game?

If you’re all about graphics in games, Then I suggest in owning the PC version of the game.. In True-1080p (res can go higher) it looks absolutely breath-taking with max settings on..

  • I played the demo and boy…. WTF Crytec this game doesn’t look anything like you have been showing us on the trailer. The graphics in the trailer looks much cleaner and sharper while the demo looks washed down and faded what are you guys at Crytec smoking when you put out this demo. I just hope to GOD that when the retail version comes out it doesn’t look like this

  • I must have played when the connection was fixed.. Everything is fine in this game except melee i think. You have to literally hit a guy like 4 to 5 times before you down him plus it just looks way too [DELETED]. I think they could have put more animation into it. The simple hit with the butt of a gun just doesn’t do it for me.

  • @EvilAngle34 and Marlyt get your eyes checked

  • Played it on the pc and played the ps3 demo. Both are good, I do hope that the graphics can be bumped up just to gamer settings like the pc version is for the consoles.

  • Thanks Crytek almost killed my PS3 I was have to reformat the system… all of those who suffer redd light and beeps try safe mode and format the hard drive this my help

  • I’ve tried to play the demo a few times today and every time it can’t find anyone. Then it eventually says that the connection failed.

  • lol the 360 version doesn’t look that great either. The pc on the other hand…OMG!! is it gorgeous

  • thats a bad ass game loving it…

  • so no response from anyone from sony or crytek? thats not suprising, it is exactly what child does when it has been found out to lying they go quiet and dont say anything

@crytek shame on you for releasing the game in this state to gamers, and to have crappy servers and crap xbxo360 matchmaking system which i wish you would not use, its crap, make dedicated rooms ffs or allow people to make dedicated rooms, this game is just like blk ops, crap hit detection, crap matchmaking, at least if the servers would work that would be something, but 5/20 tries to get into a game? no sorry, this mp say volumes for what the whole game will be like, if you cannot even be bothered have solid mp experiance in demo, what hope do we have for sp one? and you develops in industry moan and whine about people that pirate games, yet you spew games like this out? dead space 2 servers were crap also, is this a EA thing at the moment?

  • @sony shame on you guys for allowing these 3rd party developers to shovel us these sub par games in these conditions, this crap you have going on with ms is kiling the console gaming market, we getting decent solid games from you, and sub standard multi plats from developers, it just not on

anyway hope they sort this if they can for ps3 games that were really looking foward to playing your game, based of what i played on the demo, i will not be picking it up any time soon

  • I am downloading it now hope to see if its any good being crysis its probably amazing .

  • I want to get this on PS3 but the 360 just runs smoother so I’m going to have to get it on that platform. I usually buy PS3 for all my games but this is just nasty.

  • http://ps3.mmgn.com/Articles/Crysis-2-PS3-Demo k i find this and it shows they dont look alike

  • @GARSTER

Have fun even trying to get into a game.

It won’t get me into one.

  • Not impressed at all by the graphics in the demo. The cryengine 3 looks hardly better than the black ops engine, and that engine is seriously outdated. Add that to the fact that for some reason I cant connect to a game unless someone invites me to their squad, just don’t see what the big fuss is.

Will definitely PASS on this one.

  • Crytek is so full of it. Crysis is much more open world than say Killzone 3 or Uncharted 2, so I could definitely understand the visuals being a bit worse in terms of detail. But Crysis 2 on PS3 looks and performs horribly. Sub-HD resolution, framerate issues, and texture pop-in galore. That is when you can actually find a damn game due to all the connection issues.

All that bragging about CryEngine 3, and this is what we get. I’ve seen better looking and performing Unreal Engine 3 games on PS3 (that actually run at 720p, mind you), and that’s just sad. I can’t even imagine how the game will chug in 3D mode.

I really was looking forward to Crysis 2, but I don’t think I can support such a lazy port. Naughty Dog and Guerrilla could make a better looking game with their eyes closed. Granted, graphics aren’t everything. But when the gameplay suffers as a result of all the technical issues, there’s a problem.

  • The demo has bad visuals and is sub HD. I will reserve my final judgement until I see a head 2 head comparison with among the retail games.

  • Not terribly worried about current graphical problems and frame rates. I have in my experience played many demos were there were all kinds of problems, however, optimization moves in leaps and bounds towards the end of making the game. The ps3 can play graphically advanced games without a hitch (don’t make me point out the Uncharted series). The only possible problem is that Crytek is a third party devolper, meaning that they may not be able to fully use the ps3. Nevertheless i am confident that Crytek will at least have excellent visuals by the release of the final game, though, i have no doubt that if all you’re playing the game for is its looks then you should definitely get it for the pc.

  • I’ll be passing on this POG(Piece of Garbage). Onto the next amazing PS3 exclusive.

  • “NC: I’ve gone on the record saying that if you stick PS3 and 360 side by side I would challenge anyone to find any meaningful difference. I don’t see it at all.”

    You LIAR!

LoL that is the biggest pile of doo doo I have ever read. I played the game this morning and it sucked soooo bad. The concept is there but the frame rate and the resolution sucked beyond belief. If you don’t believe me this is a very trusted site that is non biased. And all of this is coming from a PS3 fanatic….. ME!!!

    http://www.lensoftruth.com/head2head/verdictscreen-shot-comparison/head2head-crysis-2-multiplayer-demo-screenshot-comparison/

  • To anybody who still wants to believe that the final built will be on par with 360s version: Don’t!

Crytec are very well aware of what they release to PSN to represent their product. The demo is meant to represent the game and we have to judge the game from the demo.

To all who haven’t played the demo because of network issues: believe the screenshot comparisons! The game really looks that bad! Often Screenshots don’t do justice to a product. Not with Crysis 2 on PS3. The resolution is terrible, the colors are washed out, everything looks blurry and the framerate is not consistent.

If we PS-gamers continue buying inferior versionsm we will get inferior versions till the end of this gen. Our only power is to leave our wallets in our pockets.

    Crytec don’t deserve your money!

  • I have to agree with everybody else here. I was really looking forward to Crysis 2 on the PS3, but the demo is extremely disappointing. Not only it feels like SD and the rendering is blurry and poorly defined, but the low frame rates make it almost unplayable.
I am especially angry since the game actually looks like it could be a winner, and I love FPSs.

  • downloaded the demo..coudnt get into a match..what gives..i was considering this game but after hearing all the backlash about the graphics(mind you i dont care one bit about them), the MP being a bit lame, etc. im going to Pass on this one..besides i alredy have my hands full with KZ3 n still looking foward to Socom 4, Infamous 2, resistance 3 and more so ya good luck to the game..im sure it will still sell loads…..on the PC at least.

    *goes back to KZ3 MP*

  • Finally got into a game last night and honestly had fun. The Nanosuit mechanics were pretty cool.

Ran okay, but not amazing. Definitely some drops in frame rate.

Looked okay, but not amazing. A single player demo would have been a much better idea.

  • so, my only question after reading all of your genius input on the demo is…

what don’t you understand about the word DEMO??? did you think they would release the most recent build so that players could play two maps?

i’m reading all this crazy backlash against this game on consoles(specifically on ps3) and it’s not even out yet. someone explain this to me, logically.

i had a blast with the demo, while still keeping in mind that it’s the DEMO. i didn’t expect it to be perfectly representative of the finished product.

all in all, i cannot wait for this. pre-ordered and paid for. i also can’t wait for everyone to be proven wrong when this game takes a giant, steamy dump on crack ops and pretty much any other shooter that’s been released this year. wait for it :)

  • Criterion. Visceral. Bioware. Gearbox. DICE.

These are just some of the many third-party developers who ACTUALLY know what they’re doing on the PS3. The backlash here wouldn’t be so bad if Crytek had only talked up Crysis 2 but hadn’t also knocked Naughty Dog, Sony Santa Monica, and Guerilla in the process.

Crytek is in this position for one simple reason: They got cocky. They talked a big game and now they’ve come up short. You know the difference between devs like Crytek and Naughty Dog? Naughty Dog makes world class games and then is genuinely humbled when the accolades roll in. Now imagine a 4-year-old that throws paint on paper and demands to be complimented for their “art.” Let that 4-year-old grow on that same premise until they’re in their mid-twenties and completely smug.

    That’s Crytek.

Just remember guys: Crytek may be remembered for creating some of the most groundbreaking visuals ever seen in Crysis 1 and creating a game that is future-proof, but Naughty Dog will go down in history as having made some of the best games of all time.

    Food for thought.

  • Challenge? How about a bet? PS3 version has terrible performance

  • @iron_lemonade

Killzone 3 was awesome in both the beta and demo version. Crysis 2 is garbage!

  • the biggest challenge of the demo is actually getting into a game.
Thats how bad it is. For cryteks sake i hope it sells on pc which is probably hard to do cuz of pirates

  • Should look into the demo tonight….

  • Very, very underwhelming. To think I spent the past year expecting a far superior game to Killzone 3! Apparently I was mistaken. How foolish was I to think a 3rd party developer would actually hype the PS3 version of a game and have it actually turn out just as they said. I was starting to get concerned when they wouldn’t show any details of the PS3 version, and now I know why.

It’s like Haze all over again. “The Halo killer” (yeah, right). Crysis 2 “COD killer” (wrong!). Although I would like to COD burn a slow and painful death at the stake. Oh wait, it already is! Each year that series gets one step closer to the edge. MW3? Please, I’m not even going to anticipate that game. As for the Black Ops port… It makes me sick. Sony, thank you for having fantastic 1st party developers. Please continue to support them and make sure they don’t go anywhere.

Sorry, back to Crysis 2. I can deal with a crappy game. Hell, we all can. We can all buy a game and at least beat it and return it no matter how bad it is, but when that game is hyped beyond the limits of the known universe only to collapse upon it’s lies and deceit at release, those developers deserve zero respect.

  • There is alot of differences i have played both demos and here is what i can see in difference:

. When you go stealth on ps3 you see your gun is orange as for xbox 360 its clear like its suppose to be
    . Melee is Broken
    .Environment is blurry
.Xbox 360 more detail on guns as for ps3 less detail

To me i think its just not good gamer creating if they are not making ps3 look very graphical and awesome as xbox 360 and now that i have seen the demo i want to cancel my ps3 pre order because of that but i won’t because i like ps3 and i won’t get my GAME points back so im going to have to stick with it

I hope they do make improvments before they release the game or all i will be doing is playing campaign then never playing it again >:(

  • I have to agree with the 200+ negative comments about this game

  • The only reason the graphics arent good is that if they were on full it would take FOREVER to download

  • Here is a link to youtube showing the retail graphics
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7bTfuPpUuI

  • Maybe Sony should start greasing under the table like Microsoft so developers can stop making them subpar games. It seems like the only ones that respect the ps3 is sony’s 1st party companies.

  • @ 154

No offense intended to anyone, brother. One man’s opinion is all it is. I just do not understand why all these people are piling on so hard. I’ve never seen such negativity, even from the gaming crowd. These yahoos rarely surprise me with their vitriol but this has been downright hateful. Opinions are great for all to have, and I get that some people just aren’t going to like something. But this isn’t Tron or Damnation (worst PS3 games ever). It’s not bad at all, in my opinion. Oh well, maybe I’m a ‘tard. Peace.

  • I think the reason why a lot of ppl are frustrated is that crytek said crysis 2 would challenge uncharted 2 killzone etc but the demo showed that it was nowhere close to it.I’ve played the demo again and maybe I may have been too critical but still you shouldn’t make promises you can’t keep especially to a ps3 community that almost always expect top notch quality games

  • played the demo. and im sad to say that the xbox version is alot better. i love my ps3 but the difference is too big, im going to get this on xbox.

feel sad for the devs who probably spent alot of time developing this, but its not great. framerate drops significantly, and i dont normally notice this stuff.

  • This game was made pc’s and scaled down to run on consoles..bad move nowhere near enough ram for a start, this shows with an appaling 30fps,low res and clipping.don’t think this gen of consol is ready for cryengine.keep it on the pc.where none of these issues are present. i’ve got all 3 platforms and the pc 1 is the only 1 worth buying in my book

  • Unfortunately, the demo doesn’t work since there is network error.

  • Yeah I played the demo, it has many problems. Framerate is sluggish at best, aiming is inconsistant, melee is just awful, stealth mode is pretty stupid, graphics are below average, I could go on but I will not. About the only thing I like is the music that plays, seriously, that’s it. Sorry but I will just go ahead and wait for Resistance 3, the only fps this year I want to play.

  • mmmm I smell lies , really bad frame rate , weird spiky shadows , sub hd visuals , inconsistent sound design , blured textures , AND LAZY developers who think they can make a good port but completely FAIL and make cheap garbage.

  • Wow! NOT 1 single reply or update to resolve the disconnects or poor graphics on the demo.

  • First of all, i can t play the demo.

  • No reply form Crytek. This shows how they don’t give a s.hit about us.
