Crytek Talks Crysis 2 PS3; Multiplayer Demo Now Available

Console gamers didn’t get the chance to experience the first Crysis, a shooter known for making PC gamers feel self-conscious about the power of their graphics cards. PlayStation 3 owners won’t be left out of the follow-up, as Crysis 2 arrives on PS3 next week.

Recently I spoke with Executive Producer Nathan Camarillo about those trademark Crytek visuals, and about the new multiplayer demo, which just hit PSN last night.

PlayStation Blog: We know Crytek can produce on the PC. How do you utilize the PS3 to live up to the high PC standard?

Nathan Camarillo: It’s the core of CryEngine 3 that’s able to scale appropriately and we can adjust per platform exactly what we wanna get out of it. We want the exact same gameplay experience, the same fun, the same intensity, all the same visual information that you need to understand and play the game appropriately. It’s just a lot of under the hood magic.

PSB: One recent IGN article said Crysis 2 didn’t look very good on PS3. CVG/PSM disagreed. What’s your response?

NC: I’ve gone on the record saying that if you stick PS3 and 360 side by side I would challenge anyone to find any meaningful difference. I don’t see it at all.

PSB: Talk about 3D implementation Crysis 2 on the PS3.

NC: In Cry Engine 3 we have a really tricky implementation of 3D – we’re able to generate the 2nd image with little to no impact. We don’t lose visual quality, we don’t lose resolution. You get the same experience as you get in the 2D game, except it’s in 3D, which is better. It’s more immersive, it feels better.

The 2nd part of our implementation is: we don’t throw things out of the screen at you. We start at the TV screen and then push in. This avoids eyestrain and eye fatigue, because we want you to play this for hours and hours. If you’re playing single player it’s easily 10-12 hours for a good gamer to get through the game.

PSB: What should PS3 gamers be looking out for in the demo?

NC: In most games you’re mentally programmed to stick on the ground. If you wanna go one level higher, go find a ladder, go find some stairs. It takes until people see someone jump in front of them that they realize they can jump there. You gotta break the habit of being ground-constrained like in other games.

If it’s one story high, you can jump there. If it’s a story and half, you can jump and pull yourself up. So it really changes the speed and pace of multiplayer. I can’t wait for PlayStation 3 owners to get their taste of crazy, insane nanosuit multiplayer action.

That wait is now over – the Crysis 2 multiplayer demo is now available on the PlayStation Store, featuring two game modes on two maps. Try it out and share your thoughts in the comments.

  • I have an Xbox which i bought my younger brother for christmas, i usedto have an Xbox like 4 years ago when there were no games for PS3 and liked it, but then i found out again why PS is good when i bought the slim couple of years ago. you cant argue that the graphics are far suprior on the PS3 its just that most games are made for the Xbox and ported to PS3 usualy making sure that the PS3 game is not quite on par or is the same as the Xbox 360 version so as not to piss of micro$oft [bribes alot of the time involved] money talks, big example is COD, was badly ported to PS3 its doesent run aswel but even though it was ported after playing on the PS3 you go to xbox and it looks more soft with less colours and less visually sharp, this is because the Xbox is not true HD it upscales to HD, the ps3 is FULL HD and it shows, the only reason the PS3 version of COD doesnt run as smooth is because it was ported and not coded properly for the PS3 and on purpose too, Micro$oft [Xbox 360] wanted to try and make people think that the PS3 is hard to code for and that it is not as good as the xbox so because they have so much $$$$ they just paid Activision to do what theyre told, like they do for other games

  • PS3 exclusives such as UNCHANTED, GRAN TURISMO, GOD OF WAR, and KILLZONE!! really show off how amazingly graphical + smooth the PS3 really is. now play CRYSIS 2 demo on Xbox [again it is ported badly to ps3 so pay the xbox 1] then directly after play KILLZONE 3 on PS3 and you WILL BE AMAZED at how amazing the graphics are and how smooth the game is, even with 24 players online, it does shock you to how good the PS3 really is when its used proply like it should be but none of these multi platform game companies want to showcase that and piss off micro$oft because afterall theyve got the money and as we all no and is proven with games like COD and CRYSIS 2 money talks, its a bummer for people who own the PS3 because it means that most games we basicly haveto play the Xbox 360 version of which is stupid, but hopefully this will start to stop when BATTLEFIELD 3 comes out because they’re making a different version for each platform, they have stated that the ps3 version will be better than the Xbox 360’s.

  • Just to add dont go on about Xbox Live no more PSN perfectly fine for online play now only thing Xbox live has that PSN has’nt is party chat and apparently something about demo’s but every demo i want to play on the PS3 i can. the PS3 is also better value than the Xbox, how did i work that out you say? you pay £150-£200 for xbox but then youve got to pay for the wirless receiver another £50-£80 and Xbox live an extra £40 per year, so that about £250 for the latest console with built in wirless, and the same really for the lower budget model if you need the wirless receiver which mose people do, ino i do, and you will have like a 4gb or no hard drive. then you have compared to the ps3 a good chance that it may brake and not have a very long life. the ps3 on the other hand is £250-£300 all in depending on which one you wan’t might aswell go for the 160 gb you dont really need 320, and you get a full HD gaming system, plus added bonuses of being able to surf the internet watch bluray movies and enjoy true stunning HD games,

  • plus the PS3 has proven extremely reliable and should last around 8 years with a very low percentage that it will break, just incase it does i have the warrenty for 5 years which cost only £50 just incase. Ive had 3 Xbox’s 2 were years ago and one new one my brother owns which i can always hear through my ceiling lol, PS3 is a silent assasin. there we have it its all there and none of it is a lie i could go on but i dont cant be ass’ed lol. you may call me ‘FANBOY’ but the fact is i no exactly what the Xbox is ive had 3 of them like nearly everyone who owns a PS3 usedto play the xbox, and i do love the PS3 because it is……. the best out of the consoles you can get and its a fact, these game developers just need to stop taking $$$$ and stop being so scared by micro$oft and just go ahead and make the game the best it can be for that console. say no more no lies all truth.

  • @ marlyt

Ur not a tard. I see where you are coming from.

  • Notice not a single Crysis Dev dares set foot on this thread.

  • @NigelDocker Jesus! I took 15 minutes just to read everything. Nice posts though.

  • tbh, after playing the demo, i didnt like it much.

  • Soooo, who’s ready toplay some Infamous 2? Did everyone sign up for the create-a-mission beta? Just yapping since we’re gettingno feedback from Sony or Crysis team….Hello…is this thing on?

  • I feel like they dissed PS3 before the demo even came out PC version got it before us understandable Crysis one came out first then Xbox got it a dew days later then they release it for PS3 a WEEK before the gamre comes out?! Thanks Crytek your the best. >_>

  • LOL they removed the demo

    Crytek, you are pathetic.

  • @+ commedieu?

did they really remove the demo…lmao, i feel pretty bad for anyone that buys this game, so when are they gonna stress test the crysis mp network..lmao oh wait there not, they will just let it run like it is 5 out 100 game searches you will get to enter…*yawn*

  • It would be nice just to play the Demo, It hasnt even let me get in a game for the 3rd day now.

  • Crytek you failed. thought you would gain some console user-base buy going multiplat? You wont be getting my purchase and we/us gamers wont be fooled tricked or manipulated by false advertisement and lies.

Hope you learned your lesson we all saw what was going down when you cuddle oh so closely with Micro$oft!

  • @denuq

It’s still there. ranked a 3.72, certainally not what I expected from such a hyped game. probably has a lot to do with the fact that you can never play.

  • I downloaded this demo about two days ago and I cannot get connected to any game, what’s up with this??? Is it going to be fixed?

  • Oops, it’s still on the store but they are or have shut down the servers.

  • @+ marlyt

yeah after all the hype and the delay compared to 360/pc i thought least it would run ok, then because of the lash back they decide after 2 days remove it and bring network down yet, 360/pc demos were up for how long? dam eu only got it wed ffs..lame

  • I was really looking forward to the demo of trysis 2, but with all due honesty, this game is not as good as the other fps out this year. Frame rate is horrid, hit points do not register, and there is no way trytech can fix the problems before march 22. If I was trytech, i would have held the console versions, until they can adequately enhance the console experiences. Totally disappointed with crysis 2. Also, please don’t say it is only a demo, because i downloaded a demo of Medal of Honor early beta, before the game was released thinking that the final game would be different, but to my amazement, the final game was the same experienece, including the added glitches.

  • The “network connection lost” issue is still present. :( Can’t play yet.

  • If you want to join, i did th following. First join game and count to 15 secs, then exit and join again and count to 15secs, if it doesnt work, keep trying, and eventually it will work. But after one play through crysis 2 isnt that good. Sry crytek, its the truth. By the way Killzone 3 is way better, this is for anyone unsure about what game to purchase. Crysis 2 just got infiltrated by Killzone 3, oh and KZ 3 has a freakin mech, guys a MECH!!

  • why crytek? why do this to the playstation community?

  • Is this demo over or what. I cant play it, it says lost connection

  • @221: That doesn’t work for me because I get the error connection at the moment I press start on the Title Screen, it doesn’t let me do anything, it seems that the servers are down for good…

Deleting this demo, it was a waste of time for me…

  • “Crytek NC: I’ve gone on the record saying that if you stick PS3 and 360 side by side I would challenge anyone to find any meaningful difference. I don’t see it at all.”

Yeah but there is a different when you see the PS3 version is motion though in comparison to the 360. The framerate drops are ridiculous. I expected more from Crytek considering you guys were one of the first to develop multi-core processor enabled games.

  • Trytek with their Tryengine3 have made so many outrageous claims over the development of this game, guess what almost everyone has been smashed to pieces.

    Here’s a few:

    “Crysis2 performing better on PS3 than 360”

“Crysis 2 in alpha stage looks better than KZ2” (this made rofl)

“Crysis 2 will feature best game AI ever” (F.E.A.R says hi, and CVG said mostly they suicidally run straight at you)

    and the most recent one:

“I challenge anyone to find any meaningful difference between console version” (LMAO)

This guy is like a drug addict in denial when is he going to wake up? They keep going on about this Trytek magic, why can’t they magically make the 4gig PS3 indtall disappear?

NC has really took the biscuit and added insult to injury by coming on the official PS blog and bare faced lied, he doesn’t deserve to be promoted like this. GTFO

  • Please tell me that Crytek/EA will be patching the PS3 version to get the resolution and framerate up to par with the 360 version. Because, from what I played last night, they have not fully utilized the PS3 hardware. Hardly the best looking console game to date, based on the PS3 version. So disappointed and I don’t appreciate being lied to with PR BS, Caramillo.

  • Everyone who critisized this guy (like myself) is WRONG.

Lens of Truth did a comparison video of the FINAL game.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bp8Ij1E1m-M&feature=player_embedded

Look at 2:35 mins into the video. The PS3 version has small details like leaves blowing in the wind, 360 has none.

  • I am underwhelmed by what Crysis 2 is bringing to the PS3. Don’t get me wrong, the gameplay is there and it’s GREAT, but the framerate did dip on numerous occasions. This is very disappointing considering Crytek went “on record” stating that the console versions were identical. How a lower resolution and choppier framerate boils down to “identical” is far beyond me. I feel slighted by Nathan Camarillo and this PR BS he has been feeding the media and gaming community.

Crysis 2 looks fuzzy, grainy, and somewhat hazy on the PS3 from the couple of hours I played last night.

I am seriously thinking about trading this in and getting the 360 version, because developers half-assing the PS3 versions of multiplatform games is getting quite OLD this many years into the console generation. So disheartening. Sony needs to step in at this point. Unacceptable and unfair to PS3 owners.

It’s a great game, but the PS3 version should have been delayed from what I’ve played thus far.

thats what im saying the whole hole point of how stupid this is, the PS3 is closer to the PC version with more particles in the air superior lighting compared to Xbox and its not missing grapihcs such as running water and things in places., an things that are far away from you. the PS3 graphics for this game are better but because of that, if they brought the game out as it would have been it would have shown up the Xbox, so they just did a few cliks of a button to lower the resolution a little and make the colours appear more dull with less bloom to them. this is becaus theyv’e obviously had a deal with Micro$oft.

  • i mean take what happened with the demo… they done a horribly old build or 360 port making the PS3 version look bad and worse than it actually is. and with all the complaints they never said one word or made any statements. dont you think Crytek would defend their product? yes but they were paid to keep their mouths shut so that people would either cancell their pre orders for the PS3 or get the Xbox 360 version instead. and it worked very well. its so stupid. and the fact they could so easily change the resolution to make it a more sharp and make the coulers and shine how it should be is rediculas. THEY DID IT ON PURPOSE PEOPLE, they got payed. its not good but hey what can we do.

  • the demo wont work for my ps3. it goes past the introduction video, and says i can’t connect or something.

  • That’s because the game is out already so the servers for the demo is over, it was a multiplayer demo dumb dumb!!

  • It sucks for every owner of a ps3 as we are prepared to pay for the ps3 as it offer more than the 360 in its hardware for these type of games. They said we have achieved best graphics on ps3 for the game than any other company. well were is it huh ???? we all know the ps3 can do better and handle more info. You cant hide it as we all seen it done by all Sony’s leading gaming brand. So why are we getting down graded version of game. come on its obvious Ive got both machine and i can see a massive difference its down graded i can tell
They charge the same price for a poor production of the game on a better machine its a joke
We as ps3 owner are getting ripped.
the game would be great if all the problems were to be sorted out and done right. and none of this down grading because of competitors the likes of $$$$$.()(360() >>we paid for a a better counterpart and so we should get a better version of the game. don’t get me twisted i like the game but all of the thing that is wrong should not be a problem as we all know the ps3 can handle thing better than its competitors.
Cant believe the misleading of there comments and that they are allow to getaway with it too.
