Update On PlayStation Network/Qriocity Services

An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.

  • then I take it no one has been to a Sony Supported hack fest and if I were you, I would deeply research befor firing off an answer.

  • Last I checked, we were told 1-2 days…..3 days ago.

Oh, the BBQ was yummy. Great corn-on-the-cob. :D

Hockey playoffs are on so I’m good. Dunno why every other one of you aren’t watching the great sport of hockey, esp. during the playoffs. Bunch of lame gamers sitting on a blog instead. :p

  • @ sid4peeps first of alll … they didnt take anything away . you were more than free to keep linux by not updating , secondly they stopped producing units and supporting that feature WHY ???? you guessed it hackers . and no george didn’t do what he did for the common man .. he did it for his own ego and enrichment .

@+ s1mpl3______j4ck the psn gaming service is free and and even states in the TOS that it can be shutdown at any given time with no guarantees of connectivity whatsoever . i wouldn’t expect them to lose even yet more money on a free service .

  • I personally want my information to stay confidential and am glad SONY has done everything they can to protect it by turning PSN off. While it is not ideal, I know my CC information is safe and will be again when they decide to plug back in. I’m a PS+ subscriber but have no desire for any sort of refund because this is a extreme situation and again I applaud them for doing everything they can to keep my info safe and weather the bad PR from shutting down the online component of their main console.

Thank you SONY. I look forward to more great game experiences on and off-line in the future.

  • aw hope it gets back up soon

  • sony supported hack fests would count towards “authorized intrusion ” depending on what type of hacking your speaking of if your talking of game hacks which is changing code and not gaing access to servers then your speak8ng of a different type of hack all together . HOWEVER , it is NEVER lawful to gain UNAUTHORIZED ENTRY into a server or access portions you were never authorized to access ii would highly recommend you visit the fcc website TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK .

I’m sorry Sony but I don’t think one of your top tier game critics can hold out much longer!

  • @Sony TYO 6758
I can see that you are having major issues. We gamers are more then gamers some us hold stocks and bonds to your company.
Some of us purchase things off your Network and some of us just play games that we purchase from the stores.

But all in all many of us people called “Consumers” are getting fed up with how we are being treated.

Now, your Network is down and it looks like for some reason or another you wish to remain in the shadows .
This does not bode well for you. It makes no difference rather it was an” external attack” or not. You should have been well prepared for it. Now with the past events that have happened I am wondering one thing?
Is Sony going to be around much longer? Why are you hiding your finalize data until a later date?
All we are asking as consumers is that you be honest and open. What you need to do is have a press re-lease.
I, a single consumer may not have the power to do anything but when you start losing legions of consumers you will no doubt feel the burn in your pocket books.

  • oh BTW 466+ datastorm98632 heres yet another resource demonstrating the illegality of hacking (take out spaces) h t t p : / / http://www.ncsl.org/default.aspx?tabid=13494

also … sony wasnt built yesterday , so they ll survive this … hell … apparently the rest of the world doesnt even care as their hasnt even been so much as a mention on the news . i plan on sticking with sony. hell if not for all the fun then perhaps just out of spite for the hypocrisy of the hackers . i don’t need ALL the details , just tell me if it’s prudent to keep my suscription .

  • @s1mpl3______j4ck every post of yours that I have read has just been about getting something free. Sony is allowed to take PSN offline WHENEVER they see fit. I’m pretty sure if you read the Terms of Service, you will find this. All game companies state this! Nothing is OWED to you.
    15. WARRANTY DISCLAIMER AND LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
No warranty is given about the quality, functionality, availability or performance of Sony Online Services, or any content or service offered on or through Sony Online Services. All services and content are provided “AS IS” and “AS AVAILABLE” with all faults. SCEA does not warrant that the service and content will be uninterrupted, error-free or without delays. In addition to the limitations of liability in Sections 1, 2, 11 and 13 of this Agreement, SCEA expressly disclaims any implied warranty of merchantability, warranty of fitness for a particular purpose and warranty of non-infringement. SCEA assumes no liability for any inability to purchase, access, download or use any content, data or service.
Not exactly what I said but close enough. You’re owed nothing.

  • One thing to consider is the wording of this update. “External intrusion” would indicate that the security breach was from a single entity, rather than a massive DDoS effort by a group like Anonymous.

  • Thanks Sony. I just signed up for Netflix on Thursday morning. What perfect timing. If it’s not up by Monday I’m selling my PS3 and upgrading my XBOX Live account to Gold so I can watch there instead.

  • There seems to be a lot of talk about whether or not hacking and or DDOS attacks are legal. Hacking in and of itself is not illegal in all respects. It becomes illegal when you hack your way into unauthorized areas of a system that you do not have the rights to do.

DDOS attacks are another story they are not a means of Digital Protest as these hacker groups and others that support them attest. They are illegal in many countries, including the US, UK and others. DDOS attacks can land you in jail and it has happened a few times. Look it up, its true.

Make no mistake what these hacker groups are doing is 100% illegal and 100% stupid. They claim to represent the gamer and those that want rights, blah blah blah but all they really are is digital terrorists. In the end the only people they are hurting are the people like us that just want to use the services and games we paid for. They don’t speak for me and I bet they don’t speak for most of the other 75 million PSN users worldwide either.

  • @BIG-E310 HaHaHa You can still watch Netfix, Go to Youtube and type in watching netfix on ps3 with psn down.

  • Well, from what i am reading; everybody is pissed and they should be…like me. But, I am now thinking of the old NES days, just playing to complete the game. I got some trophies from playing Lara croft & the guardian of light. Then playing Dynasty Warriors: Strike force which I still need like one card and some weapons to completely finish the game—FINALLY!!!
The boys are playing COD: BOs on split screen and to try complete some of the game on Veteran to get the trophies on those. So, in a way people of playstation, it REALLY SUCKS not being able to be online kicking some [DELETED], but, now it gives us a chance to play some games that would like to finish and get all the trophies.
I understand my rant that I made, I believe it was #106, but, since that time, I starting to play the games that I want to finish and get some more trophies.
So, let’s just leave Sony to take care of what needs to be taken care of. Because all these rumors and theories aren’t helping everyone here. Pretty soon it will work and hopefully it will all be good.
SONY is doing a good job and games are games.
    Thanks.

  • Sony isn’t working on this because its a holiday (Easter) weekend. We won’t see PSN up until Monday.

  • I want to watch Robocop but NOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

  • enough is enough. Im buying an xbox, unless I get a compensation caz this is really getting insane

  • Sounds like BS from Sony and they screwed something up and blaming it on hackers or someone else. I bet some guy just spilled coffee on the servers.

  • btw 473 you’re being irrational. An xbox will just cost you more money. What’s a couple days of no online. It’s not like you’re losing anything. Oh you can’t play online, neither can anyone else. But you paid for online, no you didn’t. There is no reason for Sony to give us anything back but it would be nice if they could actually protect their systems, that’s if it was actually a hack on their systems.

  • Really guys? I have said this.

“Hacking is a felony in the United States and most other countries. When it is done by request and under a contract between an Ethical Hacker and an organization, it is legal. The most important point is that an Ethical Hacker has authorization to probe the target.”

Yes, it is illegal. Anonymous is breaking the law. They have also confessed to hacking PSN. So, I say sue ’em BIG TIME!

Its like someone shoots you, and the shooter confesses, but you don’t press charges.

  • REMINDER OF WHY OtherOS WAS TAKEN

“The next system software update for the PlayStation®3 (PS3™) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3™ systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update. In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3™ owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.”

Why do people think it was for them to get money? How would they get money from discontinuing OtherOS?

  • What I’m enjoying most about all of this, is all the people saying they will buy a 360 and forget about Sony. O.k. Go ahead. Do you really think you not spending your money on Sony is going to put a major dent in their income? Get serious. Your threats fall on deaf ears. And for those demanding compensation, good luck with that. You’re entitled to nothing, so expect as much. If they want to compensate you for their problem then good on them. If not, suck it up, and get over it. Sony, take your time and fix this right.

  • okay what did i miss,…im back from work

  • ppl who encourage this outage are probably the ppl wgo caused this problem

  • In My opinion, I believe that Sony and amazon may have been hit with a “Super Virus” or a “Bullet Virus” it means that any with the Knowledge and Know how can develop a virus that can do serious damage to things including hard ware. Remember Stutxnet ? That virus was designed to damage the switching circuits that controlled the nuclear cooling pumps for nuclear reactors in Iran.

Israel, USA Designed Stuxnet Attack, Alleges Iran
Iran alleges that Siemens a well-known engineering company in Germany assisted USA and Israel in unleashing a PC-virus created for damaging its nuclear plants.

Also to keep in mind, there are a number of attacks everyday from other countries like Africa and China and Iran. Why do you think windows has such a high amount of updates?

It is plausible that some one may have finally created such another worm.

  • @ 479 that is a very biased and uncalled for. I am neither for nor against this. It is what it is. and WE have NO CONTROL OVER IT!
and we fear that which we have no control over..It is the uncertainty, that has people worried.
My concerns are is my private information safe? And people deserve the right to know if it has been compromised or not.

  • Latest Update for PSN/Qriocity Services

+ Posted by Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media

We sincerely regret that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have been suspended, and we are working around the clock to bring them both back online. Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.

We thank you for your patience to date and ask for a little more while we move towards completion of this project. We will continue to give you updates as they become available.

Rebuilding there system.. That will take a day or 2 including the testing everything.
@ Sony, people were telling you you needed to update.
One attack did that much damage?

  • Oh and one final question. How can one throw people in jail that may or may not exist and have protected them selves in such a way in which they can not be found?
You call these people fools . I say this one thing and I do not say it lightly. Even in todays technology one can remain “hidden” and unable to be found. there are people that have committed crimes 40 years ago and are still on the run. Heck there was a Local woman who had a job and everything and for 20 years and was fiannly nabbed for child abduction even after the child became an adult. Now you tell me this. For ever measure there is a counter measure for every counter measure there is a counter measure to that.
Welcome to the Web. You either accept it being a hostile environment or get off the grid.
Nothing is fool proof and your a fool to think it can’t happen again.

“This isn’t hurting Son. It’s hurting the people that want to play games online.”

This is costing Sony and it’s partners millions of dollars. Transactions are not going forward, commerce between us and SCEA and partners is almost nonexistent.

You and I have probably invested a small amount of money into the games and Network. Sony and it’s third party partners have invested a whole lot more. It’s their livelihood. It’s how they pay their employees and their bills.

This downtime is hurting Sony a whole lot more than it is hurting me.

  • an update? HOW DO WE UPDATE?! IF WE CAN’T EVEN LOG IN, ARE YOU STUPID?

  • Day 5, still nothing, i will wait for 5 more, if needed, just get it fixed, as long as its before 2021 because i have my Mortal kombat launch code still to be validated ;), i hope sony fixes this and make sure it wont happen again, better safe then sorrow, i don’t understand why people are on here looking for attention, “xbox here i come”, why are you saying this ? i and everyone else don’t care what ur doing, the good thing about this update is the people with out patience ( u need patience in life) are Kids , go play your xbox, and enjoy your monthly fee, mother will be delighted to pay it for u, Sony all the way,

  • They keep telling yall these cover ups i dont know what to believe

  • XBOX DEVELOPERS ARE LAUGHING RIGHT NOW BECOUSE OF THIS

  • I remember when XBL was down for 14 days.

  • will we be back online for new call of duty black ops add on
really looking forward to the new maps and zombies

  • we will get psn back soon, there are single players game and lot of hings to do so i better wait for them to completely fix this problem , i am glad SONY is fighting those stupid hackers , they just want attention because they manage to hack PS3 and that is sad, just keep fighting SONY.

  • Sony i just want to say thanks for all that you do yes it was a lil frustrating not being able to play online but like others said at least we dont pay for our gaming and so what a computer is cheaper not after you buy all the necessities to make it smokin. i do own multiple systems but truthfully i stayed on ps3 and watched netflix with my fiance. i am sure she enjoyed it and half way thanked the adolescent scum hackers. i am all about sticking it to the man but not to the people who are pretty damn fair to us. shut the goverment down if you want to do something worth while. but any who thanks again for all that you do sony screw them others loyalty is the key.

  • “We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly”!!! Really??? Impossible to do that being so useless. Good you hired ppl outside Sony.

  • glad to be bk thanks sony but when is ps store going to be bk online and when will we get our 30days ps pluss.
