Update On PlayStation Network/Qriocity Services

An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.

  • thanx for the update and for keeping us secure…down with the hackers!!!!!

  • I just want to go….How will you compensation for being inconvenience?

    Thank you.

  • @85+ Sponge-worthy “external intrusion” = Somebody hacked in .

  • Thanks for the update, hope it’s resolved soon. I have no urgency to play online at the moment so its not a huge deal to me right now, hopefully you guys get it up and running soon though and add extra security in hopes that this doesn’t happen again. People doing this need to get a life.

  • Smoke them out and lock it down Sony. Do not let these losers walk. GEO-NOT wiggled away but no one has paid for the crimes that continue to plague us.

  • Lol get a life. Geo hot? kids smarter then you will ever be..

  • Haters gonna hate.

  • ok seriously, when the servers go back up, i hope colt gets banned….

  • I’m also a PS3 gamer that has to endure this crap, but I’d really like to point out a few things to you, and just to prove I know what I’m talking about, I’ve gone to the trouble of including links, so that you may further educate yourself.

Geohot and Anonymous are not related in the slightest. Anonymous went after Sony not because of the lawsuit, but because Sony requested and recieved a list of every IP address that had viewed Geohot’s site or videos, which, in Anoymous’ eyes is a massive crime against basic privacy. (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109252-Anonymous-Says-Its-Not-Finished-With-Sony)

  • Geohot had settled with Sony. He had agreed not to use Sony products in an unauthorised manner from then on, and Sony had agreed to drop the case. (http://news.softpedia.com/news/Sony-Geohot-Settlement-Details-Revealed-Include-Restrictions-194789.shtml)

Anonymous had indeed DDoS’d PSN and Sony websites, however the attack ceased when they came to realise it was a better idea to send a message to Sony without hurting perfectly fine consumers and gamers. Because of that, Anonymous had planned their ‘largest attack yet’. (http://www.profusely.me/2011/04/anonymous-halts-to-save-gamers.html)

  • For freedom of speech? What exactly?

  • I don’t find it a coincidence that this happened RIGHT after PSN linked with Steam. Perhaps the linkage opened up a vulnerability not there before. *shrug*

  • @12
Why would Sony reward us for them getting screwed over by hackers…

Not being rude, It’s just I find that very unlikely we’ll get any great treatment.

  • Thanks for the update

Anonymous when you said we won’t affect the public what the fu@& r u doing now

  • vignesh, Anonymous didn’t do this. At least not This time. Please, do some research first, eh?

  • Please try and conduct an investigation or interview with the whole PSN team (including engineers) as soon as possible, and come back to us with a video showing what the problems those old chaps are facing these days.

  • It takes them this long to announce what happen. why do they do this to the customers and fans of the service. why??? Why hide it and then have the rumors and questions be surrounding on why it broke? This is stupid on their part. I don’t like that the service is shut down be cause some idiot decided to break in. I blame the hackers and then sony for keeping the customers that pay alot of money to have the premium services, not telling what is up and why.
If you guys would just report what happen and keep some mini series, then the rumors would stop.

  • @105
just because they said they didn’t do it, doesn’t make it true. Hitler didn’t say anything about discriminating the jews in his speeches…. but he still did it

  • @Colt – read the ToS again, specifically Section 17: Termination. To paraphrase, it says that they have the right to terminate your access to PSN for any reason. In this perticular case, if one refuses to have/download the latest firmware available (which, as of the time I type this, removes OtherOS), that alone is cause for SNEA (or anyone else for that matter) to log into PSN. To log into PSN, one must havethe latest/newest FW available. So, what I said before still holdstrue. You had a choice – either OtherOS or PSN. Ever heard the old saying that you “can’t have your cake & eat it too”?

  • @106
They must be certain of what hit them before claiming anything.
Every official statement that comes from Sony itself goes straight to the press, so any backing on their word would take out their credibility.

  • I did ok today and yesterday but if no psn tomorrow im going to go crazy

  • When is psn going to be back!!!! Cmon it is the weekend

  • Ye you mean th NEW TOS that was JUST introduced on april 1st When Sony switched from SCEA to SNEA? Its a violation bottom line, What sony did was illegal, the only issue is nobody is going to spend $100,000 on Legal Fees to attempt to take Sony to court.

Are you that Naive? You all remember Geohot , when sony tried to sue they had 10 lawyers. Geohot had 2. They were trying to sue the poor guy for millions….. A multi-billion dollar company trying to sue a 21 year old for more money then he will make in 2 lifetimes. And then all of a sudden they drop charges and settle with a permanent injuction?

Give your head a shake man.

  • I guess this kills the 1-2 day downtime quote. PSN is gonna be offline indefinitely??

  • @111 – I feel your pain, frankly, your guess is as good as mine in as far as when PSN will be back up. Hell, I’d to play some of my multiplayer-only games (MAG< Warhawk, etc.) games, or even play Final Fight: Double Impact (which requires me to be logged into PSN). The only thing(s) that I can reccommend is to play some single-player games, watch a movie or 2, or (if you're a multi-console owner), play a certain other console online 'til PSN is up & running again. Other than that, I don't know what else to suggest.

  • Ha ye right. The TOS that was just changed on April the 1st when Sony switched from SCEA to SNEA? Pfft thats a scam bro, accept an agreement 3 years ago, but they have the power to change the agreement to there benefit? Come on man, im not supporting any hackers all im stating is that Sony used there power to push around the little guy (us) to basically control the way we would like to use our devices….

Basically you buy a Sony system and pay however much money , yet you do NOT fully own your own device? Just saying what Sonys doing i believe is wrong/unethical and probably in the long run be more harmful to them.

  • Come on Wednesday night and Thursday night was painful enough…. I can’t take another hour of this offline!!!

  • You know what? I cant stand it anymore! *Takes gun and commits suicide*

  • i want compensation DLC, backgrounds, movie pass. anything. ruined a long planned out night. had to have my friends bring over XBOX’s for a gamer shesh

  • Bunch of Motherless Kids sitting in their basement ruining my movie time on netflix with my gf.. So much for a quiet night in.

  • @94 + fuzzyclutter

Thanks. My point was that “external intrusion,” as a term, is a bit of an oxymoron in its construction.

  • I hope Sony puts a bounty/reward out for these pricks, let their own turn them in for a price. This whole thing would almosy be worth it to see these nerd ass bratty little maggots go down for this.
The nerve of these aholes to think that its okay to inconvenience 10s of millions of psn users to prove their pathetic cause.
Im glad this is backfiring on them as the vast majority of legit psn users are outraged by their sense of right and privilege to incovenience everyone else for their cause. These maggots have now crossed over to the ctiminal category of cyber terrorist and they ANYone responsible needs to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

  • @114- Well, ifI may make a point via an anoly her if I might… While you buy PS3 (hardware), games, etc. (or virtually any media for that matter, things work a little differently than, say, buying a car or house. Sony owns the underlying code that the PS3 runs on, & they own PSN. they allow people to use said code so long as you don’t break their rules. When one buys a CD or movie, one doesn’t “own” the movie. The people who made those media own it. What you’re effectively buying is a license to use it for your own private use. That’s why (if for the sake of convo you had bought the LotR trilogy on DVD), you’re not suddenly entitled to your name in the credits, any royalties, give away untold number of copies away to everyone you know, etc.

  • You know its funny but I can still go on netflix without having to sign in which is like weird but nice to know i can use netflix other then that at lest i can use my PS3 for something

  • my playstation might make a good anchor for my boat now

  • xXCoLtKiLLeR

Do a little research and stop trolling.

    1. You most certainly OWN your PS3 or any hardware you purchase. What you do not own is the software that runs it, you are licensed to use it.

    2. DDOS attacks are illegal in UK, USA, and many other countries. People that have done them have gone to jail for it.

    http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2010/12/09/are-ddos-distributed-denial-of-service-attacks-against-the-law/

    Again, do a little research.

  • Ok………. Im not running my own code on my PS3…. Installing other OS was a FEATURE. A Feature Listed on the PS3 box, your argument is not valid. Sony could have simply Allowed users to update and keep ALL features available with the PS3. And if they released something that had a Vulnerability, it SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED. Not patched via a firmware update to remove there mistake. They could allow you to have OTHER OS on 3.60 and just choose between PSN and that.. But no they removed it entirely.

The filing states that when Other OS is used, API and other hardware features are blocked, including PS3′s graphics chip, thus making it “impossible to run a pirated game on the Other OS.”

  • “Sony’s actions are like a car manufacturer telling a buyer that it is going to remove the engine because it does not want to service the part anymore and then telling the consumer, ‘tough luck, we are not going to give you a refund,’” said co-lead counsel James Pizzirusso, head of Hausfeld LLP’s Consumer Protection Practice Group.

  • blah blab blah blah
    blah
    blah
    blah
bottom line…… everyone is pissed they cant play games

  • coltkiller if your so frekin butthurt about the other os, than buy a xbox. no one is forcing you to stay with sony. as a matter of fact, it would be nice if you left

  • well better trade your PS3s in now while you can. Sony just got booted from the console business. It was fun while it lasted.. :(

  • Thanks for the update, but do you have an estimated date and time for PSN to up and running?

  • Nah thnx Socom 4 just came out sweetie ;) And FYI just saying The DMCA was introduced to stop the things Sony did/ is doing. Just weird how the system works… What are they gonna take away next for you to be butthert?

  • @129
your a fawking idiot. their fixing the problem. live went down for 11 days or something like that…. if you think 2 days is bad, than just kill yourself please..

  • nobody really cares about who owns what or gives permission to use codes or really cares what OS is used, everyone is mad they cant go online and kill there friends. i vote sony compensate us for this. it doenst have to be much, PST credit, a movie pass or game, any DLC would be nice. just to show that they are working on it and do care about their customers

  • coltkiller you [DELETED], they can take away a bunch of features, I DONT CARE. as long as they keep online gaming i would be happy. as a matter of fact, you should be happy most of their services are free. you sit here and [DELETED] about losing one feature like that feature made the ps3 the best console ever. it didn’t do [DELETED]. its gone and ps3 is still very good

  • Thanks for stating the truth finally. It is good Sony is protecting your credit card information people. Better to shut it down then you get ripped off. stop complaining and visit with family or something.

  • or just keep complaining to this web page that sony is NOT looking at haha

  • What I find interesting is Sony is thanking us for our patience when that is exactly what most people are not doing.

  • Well, let’s put it this way: relatively few people, outside of some universities and some parts of the government, used OtherOS (& let’s face it, they weren’t playing games on their PS3s, they were using PS3s for their sheer processing power only). Those who did use OtherOS and/or wanted to jailbreak their PS3s did so for 1 purpose: pirating software (and using “homebrew” as an excuse). Don’t believe me? I’ll cite proof: Bobby Blackwolf (who runs a site called http://www.bobbyblackwolf.com) did some research & posted his findings, which you can read yourself. He even cited his sources in his report. Recalling 10s of millions of PS3s? Are you kidding? Please, enlighten us to what you’re smoking and/or drinking? That’s financially impractical, esp. when a more cost-effective mean (FW update) is available. Simply put, Sony realized that OtherOS left them vulnerable to piracy, so they decided to disable it via FW update, & one had the choice between keeping it, but unable to access PSN, or vice versa.
