Q&A #2 for PlayStation Network and Qriocity Services

Yesterday, we addressed a number of your questions relating to the malicious intrusion into our network. You can find that FAQ here. As we get closer to restoration of service, here are more answers to your questions, many of which are more gaming related:

Q: Will our download history/friends list/settings be affected by the PSN downtime?
A: No, they will not.

Q: Will trophies that were earned in single-player offline games during the outage be intact when the service resumes?
A: These trophies are intact and will be re-synched when the network is once again operational.

Q: Will my PS+ cloud saves be retrievable?
A: Yes, once PSN is restored.

Q: What if we have a subscription to PS3 MMOs DC Universe Online or Free Realms? Will we get compensation for that?
A: From Sony Online Entertainment: “We apologize for any inconvenience players may have experienced as a result of the recent service interruption. As a global leader in online gaming, SOE is committed to delivering stable and entertaining games for players of all ages. To thank players for their patience, we will be hosting special events across our game portfolio. We are also working on a “make good” plan for players of the PS3 versions of DC Universe Online and Free Realms. Details will be available soon on the individual game websites and forums.”

Q: Will there be a goodwill gesture for the time we haven’t been able to utilize PSN/Qriocity?
A: We are currently evaluating ways to show appreciation for your extraordinary patience as we work to get these services back online.

Thank you for your continued feedback.

  • Thanks for the update Sony.

  • Thanks. While it’s disappointing I can’t play online, I understand the circumstances. I’ll be glad to get back on.

  • “He later added that Sony had been offered the chance to buy back the information, but declined.”

    taken from vg247.com

if this is true, theres no forgivnes

  • Now these are the answers we have been waiting for! Thanks for your hard work Sony!

  • I know this is a *bit* off topic but how to people manage to get 80-100 platinum??? I have only one (infamous) and though i dont play for trophies, i just wonder how do these ppl manage so much??

anyways i fully support sony for what its doing and there are 4 days left

  • The greedy people here dont deserve compensation imo. Dont give it to us, i dont even want it. People are to spoiled these days

  • As compensation? You could…

    1. Give us Cross Game Chat
    2. Give us the ability to change our PSN ID’s
    3. Give us a free game
    4. Give everyone a MILLION DOLLARS in their wallets :D

    I’d go with 4 lmao…

  • @96 – Yeah 80-100 plats is a little ridiculous. I only have 13 platinums, and they usually aren’t that hard. I just get trophies so I can officially “beat” my favourite games.

  • …and about somehow “losing” our trophies, If they are already on your hard drive (which they should be) and if somehow they were all deleted from their servers, you should just be able to re-sync everything. And if not, well, I’d be pissed. I would rather not get 13 platinums ALL over again…

  • Thanks for the info :), I personally appreciate Sony’s forthcoming, especially considering its potential effect on my financial identity.

  • thanks for tha update sony

  • Just please don’t make it a game that’s already out as most that are interested in it have it. I say go crazy with the ‘freebie’ say maybe a full game(blockbuster) with a one month timer on it. Especially if its got some crazy multilayer people would likely buy it once the freebie ended.

Heck maybe even a month free to all dcuo players and all ps3 owners can play for free too

  • A free PSN game of our choice would be nice;)

  • “Q: Will there be a goodwill gesture for the time we haven’t been able to utilize PSN/Qriocity?
A: We are currently evaluating ways to show appreciation for your extraordinary patience as we work to get these services back online. ”

This should mean Cross Game Chat, Video In-Game Chat, and more!!!

  • i know ur doing ur best to rebuild the system as fast as u can but u need to reign in the press in the uk as the scaremongering i have heard on bbc news, the wright stuff my local radio stations all have picked this story up and turned it into something huge so u guys need to do something as everyone is cancling cards left right and center by me, this gun ho jurnalisim is scary and cant be doing u guys any good in the pr sense and the stories that thave been surfacing on MSNBC are just M$ owned and the stuff there saying is beyond the joke.
so guys do a press satement or something to stop this stupid and silly panic and to shut up the press because its having a negative affect on the whole sony brand as far as i can see one of my m8s even traded in his 2 month old ps3 for a elite 360 and lost himself about 60 quid i did try to tell him but all the news coverage he’d seen had put him off the ps3 for life he said

damage limitation is what needs to be done and i dont think just giving the consumers a free game or whatever is going to heal this wound with the wider general public and moms wondering which system to buy i think the ps3 will not be on there minds for the 1st choice anymore

  • P.S i wiil always love sony lol

  • So Sony says they’ll do a “good will gesture” for these issues to all PSN users. Let’s just hope that it isn’t half assed.

  • also will the infamous 2 beta be extended as i still haven’t redeemed my beta code as it arrived a day after the outage begun and i hope the dates are going to be changed to give us a chance to play it

  • Thanks for the Update! :)

  • *applauds*

I just hope the trophies that I seem to have *lost* reappear when the sync happens. But either way, I’ll just be happy to sync, which will mean we’re are online! :)

  • Dont change anything on the PSN just yet get it up and secure then make your changes. Dont worry about all the whining little brats who have their hands out. A secure free gaming network is reward enough as far as I’m concerned. its a $60 per year reward. This Q A is really appreciated but has opened the door for all the flaming crybabies.

  • @Teraphas. Stupid. I don’t want more crappy timer games. Especially if you have to actually buy it after x time. They should just give something and leave it at that. If you or somebody else has it, too bad.

  • Are we going to be able to update other aspects of our profiles that we previously were not able to after initial sign-up; i.e. security questions/answers?

If these have been comprised then there is no point in changing my password, as someone could simple use my security questions/answers to reverse the process or take the acount away all together.

  • sony should disable all “old” password.
sony should send new temporary password for each 77 million account via e-mail.
    + change all security answer.

  • Best of luck, remember that no matter how much bad press you get they have no idea what they’re talking about.

  • Please give me PSN money so I can finally buy “Plants vs. Zombies”!

You should give every user 3 months of PSN+ for free and every PSN+ member gets the same but also a free downloadable SCEA retail game i.e. ModNationRacers or Infamous, by giving PSN+ members ModNationRacers for free you can pick up some sales from the downloadable items and the game’s userbase will obviously be expanded

You should give Infamous to PSN+ members for free (along with the 3 free months of PSN+) in order to drum up sales and interest for “Infamous 2,” Microsoft kind of did the same thing for Fable 2 when Fable 3 came out, allow the game to be a first come-first served type deal where its available for a period of time to download before they have to pay for it.

You guys (SCEA/SNEA) still have my support because of the games and the reliable hardware, stay strong.

  • @LilWayneSuckz
modnationracers is a good idea but i already bought infamous day 1 on the PSN :P

  • When will PSN me restored? People are are saying Midweek next week, thats ages! Will it be up today? its a bank holiday weekend in the UK thanks to royal wedding, COME ON. And Still I can post on US blog but not Euro, WTF!

  • I don’t see any Moderator replys here, is this normal on the US blog? on the EU blog nearly all the comments get asnwered by a Sony representative sometimes, The layout of this Website is horrible compared to the Euro one.

  • It is time for Sony to make amends.

As someone who got the YLOD after only two years of use I would suggest when PSN returns you announce Sony will start fixing those broken consoles for free, like Microsoft does, instead of charging $150+. A lot of people coughed up the cash to have one repaired or went ahead and bought a Slim as a replacement and Sony did not say a single thing, did not offer any sympathy or regret for selling a console with a defect. This arrogance and disdain for your customers has now come back to haunt you. Your company’s name and reputation has been smeared, perhaps irreparably. You have caused a world of hurt to PS3 customers and now it is time to bite the bullet and start showing some remorse.

  • This whole debacle has made me lose absolutely all faith in Sony. :(

  • tayeul Mattsta001 t un cave

  • @Mattsta001 I received 2 defected PS3s when my main one Died, Sony repaired the Second one. This is why I am so hostile, that and they lied with regards to the other os removal.
I never got any compensation for the received to defected PS3s. No games, no apology letter form HQ, Not one damn thing. now you know why I am a tad hostile Twords Sony, they treated me pretty poorly.
There focus on there precious Consoles wasn’t for our benefit. that is clear and evident after what has occurred
Sony new of this weakness and they did nothing, that makes them a liability in my book.

  • come on guys theres no need for all this hate for sony yes they screwed up bad but its not like they attacked there own network is it this has cost them millions and dont be suprised if they start to charge a fee like MS does also all these freeloaders wanting a free game are just wrong its a free service that u get when u buy a ps3 and as some one said here that 360 users pay to play where as we dont its as simple as that theres no imbetween on the matter

as for all u who have “lost faith” in sony dont cry they will sort us out somehow there products are still the best in my opinion and i have never had a problem with YLOD as i am not lazy and i turn OFF my ps3 after im done with it unlike ppl i know who wonder why there ps3 dies after 2 years of hardly ever turning it off it will burn out !!!!!!!

    so yay common sense prevails!!!!!

  • @ gobbybobby the reason u cant comment on the EU blog is because the login cookie created when u log in to the network only lasts a week and after that u have to log back in and it creates a new cookie thus we cant comment cause the psn is down and cant sign back in. they explained this on the EU blog heres the link

have a read like everyone else has……jez some ppl need to read b4 they write

  • @obiadekanobi1980 Excuse me?! mine just fat died for some reason it over heated while on line. It froze did the beep thing and then shut down…Sure ib Hell wasn’t my fault. I followed all the guide lines so before you go accusing us of not shutting the machine Down correctly I sugest you take the time yo pause for a second. and How in tarnations can a failed Audio Channel be my fault when the audio Chip its self was batched at the manufacture..its things like this that have angered me and then Sony goes lying about the other OS being a security risk when it wasn’t? I take great offense that any one would suggest any such thing. ther is reason for the anger and it is well justified. It is also Why I vowed never to ever up date MY PS3.

And this whole network thing only ads insult to injury.

  • @ obiadekanobi1980
    u r right!
    i clean my 2 FAT PS3 consoles (sept2008 cechl)-(oct2008 cechp) 1 time every month
with an air compressor blower. and i never had any problem.
your PS3 broke because you never cleaned and maintained it correctly. Dust killed your PS3… you better SUE THE DUST NOW. lol

  • When it comes to company debacles
I do not forgive nor do I forget. I keep track and logs of all that they do and how they do it.
I remember promises made and promises broken.
You once promised us a new Browser for the PS3, that never came to be, You gave us the Other OS then you removed it because you were losing Money not because of security breach, Ypou were so focused on fixing the console that you completely neglected the most important thing to protect from Hackers, Our data. I do not care what kind of Candy you offer as I won’t accept it. My CC info that is an easy fix seeing how I don’t use a typical bank and its not a major bank. I use a smaller local bank so they know me well. Not to mention its not a traditional bank in any sense. Ever herd of a banks worst nightmare? at any rate, And as far as I am concerned, the media is doing there JOB! for once! More power to them and the consumer.

  • I have to agree with the others with including cross game voice chat. It seems like that’s the most wanted item Sony fans have wanted for a long time now. I’m not sure the tech details, but it doesn’t seem impossible, just like how you implemented the XMB menu into the background during gameplay. Honestly, the only thing I want most out of this whole ordeal is to know my personal info and CC info is safe, and that the people responsible for this are behind bars. I don’t think Sony are not to blame though, as they could have prevented this by fixing security holes when the first hacking attack happened in early April. I just hope we get PSN back safe and with the best security possible. It wouldn’t hurt to know who’s responsible for this, and what was obtained by them and if anything happened to our personal info & CC info.

  • “Sony execs probably haughtily chuckled at the idea of threat modeling. Traditionally the trust boundary for a Web service exists between the server and the client. But Sony believes they own the client too, so if they just put a trust boundary between the consumer and the client (can’t trust those pesky consumers), everything is good. Since everyone knows the PS3 is uncrackable, why waste money adding pointless security between the client and the server? This arrogance undermines a basic security principle: never trust the client.”

  • they removed other OS because if you ever used it, first is was the mush slowest PC on earth and there was so many “homebrew” project linux on it like all emulator that you can play with the PS3 wireless controller ZEROGAME. anyway people cry for nothing. alot of my friend got ylod, they never ask for SONY apologies…
    lol you freak

  • @138
Your comment gives a slight deja vu of anonymous. Should we “expect you” as well?
The new browser is one of the new features promised once everything is solved.
How exactly they were losing money? Where have you read this comment? For all I know, OtherOS was cancelled because hackers could easily breach security. Think about it, if they could do it WITHOUT OtherOS, using it would be even more disastrous. Also, Sony couldn’t offer constant support to the feature.
I can’t conceive the idea of thinking Sony’s security was weak. Remember how long this console is in the market, everyone. It only happened that someone found out their weak point and attacked for MASSIVE DAMAGE because Sony thought that exact point it was so secure that additional measures to protect data weren’t necessary. HOWEVER, they did say that CC info WAS encrypted, just not personal data like name and address.

  • @141
Your accusations seem pretty serious. Have you got any evidence or links to the source of this information?
The quotes imply this was told by someone else. I hope it wasn’t just another anonymous comment.

  • in Japan where Sony is based, one of the highest ranking government officials — Chief Cabinet Secretary Yuko Edano — issued a more diplomatic statement directed at Sony.

“Private businesses must safeguard the personal information they have with the maximum care possible,” he said, according to game site Kotaku.

This is what angers me that no one wants an investigation unless it is to find the hackers. well an investigation must be non biased as well. We have nothing to lose if an investigation goes forth and finds that Sony indeed was and is at fault.

  • i too am wondering if there will be a large double update to the store when the network reopens. other than that i say keep up the hard work Sony, and thanks for answering my questions!

  • @145
You seem to imply Sony is entirely at fault for this situation. So you think there were actually no hackers involved?
Investigate Sony to see if they were the ones who hacked their own network?
How is a company supposed to hack into its own servers, and if so, what were they going to achieve by doing that?

  • @Vinland_Krauser
    Your comment is awaiting moderation.
If posted it should be coment 146 or how ever that thing works.

at any rate with regards to you comment about being in relation to a hacker group. A person is entitled to say what they believe and feel with out being perceived to have an affiliation or tie in with a group and or entity with out being attacked by being likened unto them. Don’t be so quick to judge there are many people who are the same way in thought and feeling when it comes to protecting there values and belief.
