As you may know, we’ve begun the process of restoring the service through internal testing of the new system. We’re still working to confirm the security of the network infrastructure, as well as working with a variety of outside entities to confirm with them of the security of the system. Verifying the system security is vital for the process of restoration. Additional comprehensive system checks and testing are still required, and we must complete that process before bringing the systems online.
As you’ve heard us say, our utmost priorities are the security of the network and ensuring your data is safe. We won’t restore the services until we can test the system’s strength in these respects.
When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week. We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system. We know many of you are wanting to play games online, chat with your friends and enjoy all of the services PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have to offer, and trust me when I say we’re doing everything we can to make it happen. We will update you with more information as soon as we have it. We apologize for the delay and inconvenience of this network outage.
So as a software engineer, I find this absolutely funny as all hell.
From the reports I have read, they were either running 2 year old, un-patched Apache Web Servers. Now this given the complexity of their system, let’s say they were running jBoss instead of Tomcat servers, and most likely Apache load balancers as well. On top off all of this they had no firewall running on the web servers as well.
The great thing about open source products is that if there is ever a vulnerability, it is quickly found and patched. The down side of this is everyone knows about them. Which would be fine, if YOU PATCHED YOUR DAMN SERVERS, and don’t even get me started with the whole no firewall thing. The start up I worked at a few years ago, with 8 people in the company, had better damn security than Sony.
OK Sony, sine you’re making me wait longer, I get to change my name.
Given these further delays, I can suspect one of two things.
First, they had absolutely no relative backups of the systems that were compromised. Either they were way to far out of date, or they just simply didn’t have any. They are rebuilding their entire infrastructure from scratch.
Second, they had almost zero security in place up until the time of the attack. Now that they got burned, they are spending this time to engineer a completely new security infrastructure. I tend to lean towards this one as the “final” testing they alluded to has poked some holes in their new set-up that need to be fixed further.
Either way, this is truly amateur hour at Sony.

This is very disappointing but I will continue to endure. I’m sure you guys are looking out for what’s best for us. I really blame the hackers for all of this, and I hope we get PSN back soon so that we can all continue gaming and having fun.

Hey Sony, protip: don’t forget to add some sort of basic code redemption feature to the basic online relaunch. Otherwise people who picked up games that have code based bonuses during the outage (such as Mortal Kombat) will have to wait even longer to redeem said bonuses. In Mortal Kombat’s case, they wouldn’t even be able to play the game online, as far as I can tell.
So yeah, try to make some basic way for people to be able to redeem promo codes or else some people might be screwed out of playing certain games online for even longer.

People are talking about Sony’s stock because it is dropping due to the PSN being down. The network isn’t just used for online gaming smart guy. There is a huge commerce happening on a daily basis on the network, a few examples are; People BUYING GAMES, ADD-ONS, THEMES, PlayStation Plus subscriptions, hell even people buying clothes and what not for PlayStation Home. Then you have Hulu Plus, Netflix and Qriocity services to name a few. Point here to you blakseed is all this generates a huge daily revenue otherwise known as $$$$$$ (77 million subscribers).
If their stock dwindles to nothing then you can expect some MAJOR delays in the Network being back up if ever again. Not to mention class action lawsuits that have been filed against Sony for our personal data and credit card info being accessed by an outside party. If they would have had firewalls in place with Apache we wouldn’t be having this discussion.
And I would think that Sony would “care” if they started losing customers left and right to Microsoft’s XBOX Their main competitor. Ummm maybe you should smarten up before you show your ass to the world wide web blackseed, us consumers are what keep these company’s alive.

Hey #186, just a heads up: Netflix has nothing to do with Sony’s income. In fact, depending on which one of the 4 Netflix applications you have on your PS3, you can still use it. I should bold this for anybody who actually reads comments: You can still use Netflix. Just choose the Netflix application, and every time it bugs you to log in, just try anyway and hit O when it gives you the maintenance message. If you have to try more than 5 times, unfortunately you won’t be able to watch stuff on Netflix. I’m able to get through to the movie list on the second log in attempt.
Hey Mr. I’m only a lowly gamer here. I don’t own Sony stock, and people who are clearly trolling don’t either I’m sure. Good thing there are gamers like you to put little ol’ me in my place. Sony does receive royalties for allowing Netflix to provide their service through the PS3 platform. Granted it is a small sum compared to the other ways they make their money but it’s still revenue that helps keep them in the black. They have a contract stating so.

I have been meaning to give all the ppl a heads up that are complaining about not being able to use it, but never got around to it. I was too busy watching all 80 episodes of Prison Break lol

Already cancelled all my pre-orders and now Im seriously thinking of selling my ps3. Not because psn is still down but for the simple fact that I dont think I can trust Sony to keep my information safe anymore. Ill wait to see what this welcome back program is all about and what the free protection is but it is on my mind. Feel sorry for the Brink pre-orders

Unfortunately, this might be the end of the PSN as we know it. Seems like these hackers have the upper hand and have sent Sony back into the dark ages or the days when online gaming was nonexistent.

I plan on pre-ordering three games next week. The Network will recover. Too much has been invested by Sony and the PlayStation Community to call it quits due to panic thinking and bandwagon hopping.

Hey Sony. I know you want to give us an update on how close you are but can you give us players a few time frames. For example if all goes well it will be up next week and if not it will be up in about a month or two. That would really help us players get ready for the new stuff and/or security measures. Please consider this because a few people are really nervous or angry for not knowing when it will be up. So can you PLEASE send us an approximate in the next blog report.
