Service Restoration Update

Patrick Seybold's Avatar Posted by Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media

As you may know, we’ve begun the process of restoring the service through internal testing of the new system. We’re still working to confirm the security of the network infrastructure, as well as working with a variety of outside entities to confirm with them of the security of the system. Verifying the system security is vital for the process of restoration. Additional comprehensive system checks and testing are still required, and we must complete that process before bringing the systems online.

As you’ve heard us say, our utmost priorities are the security of the network and ensuring your data is safe. We won’t restore the services until we can test the system’s strength in these respects.

When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week. We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system. We know many of you are wanting to play games online, chat with your friends and enjoy all of the services PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have to offer, and trust me when I say we’re doing everything we can to make it happen. We will update you with more information as soon as we have it. We apologize for the delay and inconvenience of this network outage.

Full PSN Service Will Return “By May 31st”
PSN may not be back for another 3 weeks, that’s according to a recently published Bloomberg report. In a phone interview with Shigenori Yoshida (who is credited as a Sony spokesman), Bloomberg was told full PSN service is scheduled to resume by May 31st. Of course it’s still possible that things like online play and trophy syncing might return before the last day of the month but after the 3 week delay that we’ve HAD TO ENDURE WITHOUT CREDIBLE UPDATES OR INFORMATION!!!!

You fail your customers SONY, all my ps plus games are now expired, I would like a full year of ps plus free and $100 psn credit put into my wallet, cause now i will have to redownload all those games and I have like 20 of em.

Obviously YOU DON’T!!!

“The company is in the process of adopting an improved security system and its plan to restart the services fully by May 31 is unchanged, he said. Sony shut down the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services April 20 because of possible data theft by hackers.”

This is a part of the Bloomberg article. It says fully. Sony already told you guys the network was coming back up in sections. The key word is fully. I miss my network just as much but I really wish people would stop going to sites like N4G and running back here with everything as if it was facts, not only that most don’t even quote the article properly. One word left out changes the whole meaning of a sentence.

That article says FULLY. Sony has stated they will bring some services on-line before others. Activation and on-line gaming are supposed to come up sooner then that.

But It would be good if Sony filled us in on a new update perhaps commenting on the Bloomberg article? How about it, Patrick?

They should have never given a time frame to begin with, they should just of said we dont know and leave it at that, now it just seems like they have no clue when services will be back up, whats to say they can restore services on the 31st.

Come on Sony, I know you can succeed. I Have been a fan of yours since the first PS. You have delivered in every way, and all your products are top quality. I know that the new PSN will be no exception. Keep the good work :D

I would rather wait for a new top notch network infrastructure, than a crappy and rushed one, just like with my games. XD

I don’t blame you. Really.

Switch over to XBLA and enjoy your online games and stuff.

I am a big time Sony gamers and a casual Nintendo gamer (only have a DS Lite) and I have to say that Sony has disappointed me day after day with this PSN outage.

No updates.
No actual ETA (all just lies)
Consistent bad PR, press, etc
They failed to consistently release firmware updates for the PS3 when the PSP got tons (bound to get hacked like that)
Sony keeps touting that they’re working around the clock. Been like 3 weeks now.

Remember reading about how portions of the PSN would be up? Well, I’m disappointed that Sony can’t even do that. What “portions” are they speaking of?

PSN –> PS Store?

Whatever the case, it still stands that the entirety of the PSN is offline and shut off. We haven’t gotten this portion that Sony said.

I’m pretty sure that one by one, a lot of PS3 owners will sell it all and get a Wii and or an X360 and just forget about PS3 and Sony all together.

If Sony really cares, then they would’ve provided us information much sooner, and provide us with usual information instead of repeats, and lying out of their ass about working around the clock.

Working around the clock suggests working 7 days a week 24 hours a day which they obviously have not.

I really hope someone at SONY is reading all these blogs then maybe they will get the message hurry up or everyone will forget about you and just buy games that work I really hope SONY figures this out soon because I have been a SONY supporter since the day i learned of electronics but the last few years SONY has really let me down first getting rid of backwards compatibility then its just one thing after another well good luck fixing this screw up SONY

This was from an article on CNET that said this past weekend a group of hackers were going to AGAIN attack the servers of sony.

It reads, “A group of hackers that planned an attack against Sony’s servers this weekend was unable to execute its plan.

CNET has learned that our publication of the group’s plan may have caused Sony to secure the remaining servers this group claims it had access to, shutting off any avenues for another attack.

Wrote one of the members in the Internet Relay Chat channel the group uses, “Apparently Sony saw that article because the last server that I could access is offline now…its probably (sic) being patched like the other servers. There goes our window.” ”

So, sony is protecting their servers from further attacks. I know it’s an argument that you can’t play online but, realize that at least your PS3 isn’t hacked by those other hackers. Wouldn’t that be bad…I mean, for someone to hack into all PS3s while playing online and you didn’t even know it. Atleast it was the servers and not your system. The Playstation will be back up and I have all the time in the world to wait.

“You weren’t a Sony fanboy to begin with”

Really, guy? Who’s claiming to be a Sony fanboy? When you can have best of all two worlds [Xbox 360 and Playstation 3]. That was your first dumb statement, as for your last ones?

“3 exclusives”

So, let me get this straight..Left 4 Dead, Gears and Halo, right? How about Fable III? How about Alan Wake? Splinter Cell Conviction? Oh and lets talk about the content Xbox 360 gets early. Like the Call of Duty maps, Xbox 360 offers just as much as the Playstation 3, if not more. Get your facts straight.

“RROD or blows up”

What are you ten? I have never EVER heard of a Xbox 360 blowing up, and the RROD got fixed by the Falcon chip, and in the slim Xbox 360. How about that yellow light of death? See how much I could bash the Playstation 3 too, fanboy?

I’m glad that Sony is taking the time to make sure that the network is safe for us before they turn it back on. Personaly, I don’t mind the wait. It’s better safe then sorry. Those of you who are still complaining, please stop, they’re are doing what they have to do to make sure our information is safe.

Thanks Sony!!!
