Rockstar Games and Sony Joint Statement on L.A. Noire

We have received a very small number of customer support questions about PS3s overheating or shutting down while playing L.A. Noire. At this time, Rockstar Games and Sony can confirm that neither L.A. Noire or firmware update 3.61 are causing the PS3 hardware to overheat. We are both committed to working hard to find solutions to this and any issues that may arise. If you are experiencing any issues with L.A. Noire or your PS3 hardware, please contact technical support using any of the means provided below:

  • I really honestly doubt its LA Noire that causing the system to shut down. It probably because people have their system(s) in a spot where the air can’t circulate and that they probably play for 2-4 hours straight without taking a break and shutting the system off for 30 minutes. If they moved to a more open area than it would probably stay on. I have not had any problems at all with my PS3 shutting off. Occasionally it will freeze while playing COD B. Ops but otherwise nothing. And the Xbox probably freezes because it requires 3 discs which means that there is more information going through the console at one time than on the PS3 version. Oh Well people go play a different game or give the console a break. Shut it off for half an hour and go eat or take a nap or something.

  • Disappointing news, since this game feels like Law & Order in the 1940s (I’m a huge Law & Order fan and was very excited for this game). I picked up my 40 GB when Sony first launched them and I really don’t want to take a chance on it breaking since I’m not ready to invest in a Slim yet (even though some 40 GB owners have already confirmed no problems). Luckily, I still need to pick up SOCOM 4 and I’ve been slacking on my GT5 progress.

  • @thebat991

I’ve had my console since launch, in the exact same spot, with plenty of circulation.

I played MotorStorm Apocalypse this morning, my daughter watched some Dr. Who on Netflix, than I sat down to play some LA Noir.

Then it overheated and shut off. Everything else worked fine up to that point. Now I can’t do anything.

  • @Ftwrthtx

You can’t say for sure that the game itself did it. I had the problem a year ago when I popped a certain game in. I just did a reflow and am still using the same system and playing that particular game with no issues. It could have just been your systems time. I also keep my PS3 running about 10 hours a day.

  • @fester420

    I’m hoping you’re right.

  • I’ve been playing LA Noire and havent had any issues yet, i have the fat 160 gig, only prob i have had is that it freezes when i hit Playstation Store option from the Main Menu, game play is fine, just wish the store was up so i can get my DL content

  • My PS3 froze every time I hit the button for Playstation Store from the main menu.

  • and by the way…LA Noire…awesome

  • L.A. noire :D I need money . !! :D

  • IVE HEARD AT LEAST 1000 COMPLAINTS ABOUT PS3 DIEN AFTER THE UPDATE AND NOW MY PS3 FREEZES ALOT JUS RECENTLY UPDATE AND IM JUST SCARED IT WILL DIE SO I DONT EVEN WANT TO PLAY IT I THINK SONY LOST A LOT OF US AND WE JUST GONNA GO AND PLAY XBOX NOW!!! THINKIN WISH I COULD DOWNGRADE MY PS3

  • Is the new system set up to handle CASE SENSITIVE PassWord capability???
This could really strengthen the overall security of consumer information. 8~)

All I’m tryin’ to do is make an MPEG!!!

  • I been playing noire for a few hours straight and i have not seen any problems at all.

  • There is a manufacturing defect with the 60GB launch PS3s and Sony will not admit it. It is not just LA Noire. If you play the Assassins Creed games on a 60GB for more than an hour or 2 (sometimes less) there will be artifacting and poling (textures being stretched to infinity) because of overheating. An alarming number of 60GB PS3s have already died with the YLoD.

For everybody saying its just old PS3s and dust, a $600 piece of hardware should last more than 5 years and not break because of some dust. Sony said that they’ve built the PlayStations to last 10 years as far as games support, so why should the system die after 5? We didn’t pay over $600 for 5 years of use. Sony wants to charge $150 or so more for their manufacturing defect.

Microsoft is admitting their mistakes. They are sending free replacement systems to anyone with older systems that experience disc read errors because of their new firmware update. There is your proof that firmware can cause a system to fail. They also sent replacement systems to people that had their systems die because of the RRoD. Why won’t Sony do the same for those of us loyal PlayStation fans that paid over $600 for their system on launch day?

  • I have a 40gb (upgraded to 320gb) and a 60 gb original release(puchased both release night). I have yet to see a problem on either machine after many hours of playing L.A. Niore on both. My 60gb’s fan will run at full speed on a hot day and thats about it. I suspect after reading these posts that the machines effected are part of the lot that had the solder problems when china started useing “enviromentally safe solder”. I consider myself lucky to not yet have been effected by this problem.
A couple of steps I have taken to keep this situation at bay are.
    1. if your system is out of warrenty(and it most likely will be if its a 40 or 60 GB) apply a high quallity heat sink paste.
    2. use an external cooler
    3. keep all vents clean. Use canned air to clean out your machine (be very carefull not to spray ice into the machine, read the directions on can)
hope this will help some of you.

  • My 60 GB launch model died immediately after installing the firmware update. Sony has denied any possibility that this was caused BY the firmware, saying that “firmware can’t cause systems to die”.

The system installed the firmware update, shut down to do the normal “restart after update”, and then never turned back on. It instead gives me the Green Light – Beep – Yellow Light – Flashing red light.

Maybe someday Sony will admit that this was their fault. In the interim, I’ve been forced to pay for a replacement PS3.

  • i read somewhere that all those peeps that are using cfw were going too flood rockstar and sony complaining, so that Rockstar will patch the game possibly with 3.51 version, since they arent able too play the game on 3.61, I wonder if Sony has a plan for those peeps on 3.5, They are obviously part of the problem with the system and NOT part of the solution still whining about not having Linux, This whole situation is a BIG FREAKING JOKE

  • If it only happens while playing this game then there’s only 1 answer no matter how much rockstar denies it.

  • PS STORE PLEASE!!!?

  • When I play Fight Night Champion, often the game overheats and skips during gameplay, i own an original 60gb, I wonder if others with fat ps3s have experienced this same problem?

Note: the game never causes the system to restart, and if there is a freeze, it’ll unfreeze less than ten seconds later. This skipping and overworking of the fan only seems to occur when it is over 65 degrees outside, in humid NewYork…..

  • Also, this has been occuring (fight night problem) since before the recent update. However, it never happened before the April 20th event. Full disclosure: I don’t believe it was ever that warm outside before that date…

  • WELL BOUT TIME IM ABLE TO LOG-IN…. I HEARD THE GAME WAS PRETTY GOOD, BUT IF ITS OVER HEATING THE SYSTEM ITS NOT WORTH IT.

  • No problems here… I’m watching Dexter and the Pacific in blu-ray a lot these days, played Medal of Honor and Fallout New Vegas and my PS3 is not getting hot… normal… Model fat 80Gb but I modify to a 500Gb HD.

  • SOOPERGOOMAN187

@ i_like_toast You dare call me a TROLL, if I remember correctly during the downtime you were the BIGGEST TROLL ON HERE!!!

@ Rebelis , I’ll be making a nice phone call to sony hq about you today. Gotta love the fact that you can only insult. have a nice month break kid. maybe you should change your name to IDIOT.

Big behind that computer aint yas. rubes

  • I’ve been playing for Hours and Hours at a Time and I’ve had no issues at all

  • I have the fat 40gb PS3 and two days ago it shut itself down and the light on the front started flashing red. Now it won’t turn back on and supposedly that is the end of my PS3. Now I read this statement wondering is it just a coincidence that this was released the day after mine broke :/

  • @ MaXiMuS21990: The PS Store is Down. Probably why.

  • hey guys, you can log in online and change your passwords now who couldnt do it on the console….they turned on the web services….

  • @SOOPERGOOMAN187

No, that’s a dead blu ray drive..
I’ve had one do it before, so i went and bought a slim ps3 when it came out :D

  • Game’s running like a charm for me. I haven’t even experienced any glitches except one. I’ve noticed sometimes when your driving down the road the cars will disappear into thin air, but other than that the game’s pretty solid.

  • @157 Phug

I can attest to your statement. I have a launch 60GB with the HDD upgraded to a 320GB and have experienced what you described. For me, the first game I played that the “artifacting and poling” occured was Super Stardust HD. About 2 years later I finally contacted Sony Customer Service when the machine kept freezing on me as I attempted to play GTA IV. A $150 and 2 weeks later my original PS3 was refurbished and have not had any problems since…

I believe it was definitely a hardware issue specifically related to the launch consoles. I also have a phat 80 that never had this issue.

  • Ms_HelloKittyNYC

I’ve been playing this game Non stop since Tuesday and I have no freezing problems, but then again I have a Slim. Btw, this game is freaking awesome and I can’t wait til the store comes back up so I can DL my pre-order codes :)

  • SOOPERGOOMAN187

@ Vidion blurays not dead, plays bluray movies just fine, dvd’s, and cdroms so its definitely not the bluray. thanks tho. also when you send in your ps3, you dont get Your ps3 refurbished, they just send you one off the shelf. How do I know, once they sent me back someone else’s broken ps3…..

  • SOOPERGOOMAN187

To CLONER501, thank you for all the cursing in the message you sent me through psn, do you know thats against the eula? or did you not read it last week. have a fun lifetime ban for uttering death threats to me dude. I will sue you for this. Hope mommy and daddy have big bank accounts. I take death threats seriously, also you might not know this but I hacked the Hackers who hacked the psn. If I can get their REAL NAMES AND HOME ADDRESSES, YOURS WILL NOT BE THAT HARD EITHER.

  • HA! “Ugh, yeah. I’ve been playing LA Noire nonstop since i got it and my PS3 seems to be a little hot… WTF Sony?! WHY!!!”

I can answer this… Take a BREAK! Anything and everything you currently own, ranging from your car and refrigerator will start to get hot from overuse. It doesn’t take a genius (or maybe it does. You never can tell nowadays) to figure this out.

I own LA Noire and have been playing a lot lately. Yes, the PS3 gets warm but thats NORMAL. If it gets too hot because you have been playing nonstop for days, you should use whatever braincells you have left and apply common sense and take a break, before YOU break it.

  • @177 FreQaZoiD

I remember when that happened with GTA IV. Mine froze right after the starting cut-scene the very first time I played it. I also remember that back then Sony and Rockstar did admit it was a problem with the older model PS3s. I thought they had replaced those PS3s for free, but maybe that was only in Europe. Since they admitted it was a problem with older model PS3s they should’ve have replaced them for free.

  • SOOPERGOOMAN187

played it for 30mins, freeze. turned off ps3 came back to it 5 hours later, played noir for 15 mins and freeze, now no games show up when i put em in…….figure that one out. only since update and that game. worked perfect before hand.

  • All I can say is that LA Noire is a great game so far. Ya I pre ordered it and I can’t download the content yet. But Oh well I’m still loving the game. The driving took a bit of getting use to, other then that I’m turning out to be a pretty good cop. I thought as soon as I started playing I would want to be the Bad cop. It turns out that I’m ok with not being an a*****e with a gun and a badge driving around pulling pretty women over and letting them come up with ways to get out of a ticket. Hmmmmm Now that I think about it being a Bad cop could be good for a future Add on.

  • Funny story.

My PS3 just died as well due to flashing red lights as well – which a few people are having, haven’t played Noir yet and it appears I wont be for a while. Played Black Ops a little bit last night and the fan went crazy loud insane for a bit then I shut it down for the night – I think I went 12 plus hours between sessions and it will immediately crash and flash red lights now upon turning on.

It seems to be affecting mostly first gen models with PS2 backwards comparability.

I don’t really know what to do, its definitely out of warranty…should I pay Sony 150 dollars just to patch the system or should I shell out close to 400 for a new system?

Help a friend out, what do you guys think I should do?

Ps: I’m also incredibly calm right now while this terrible event is occurring for me as well :p

  • lol, losers!!! u need lives!!! especially u supergoo, but u r entertaining tho… ill give u that dude. but thats prolly cuz i jus burned 1.

  • I have no idea what you guys are doing to your systems to make them overheat but mine is an 80 gig model and has never had any heating issues. But then also I don’t confine my system to a little enclosed space either. Mine is sitting on a small end table by itself where it is free for air flow on all sides. You can’t honestly put a system like that whether it be a 360 or not in a confined place of a typical entertainment center and expect it to not overheat with not adequate air flow. I have also LA Noire and have not had the game lock up once since I got it on tuesday.

  • SOOPERGOOMAN187

@ TONY-Q Im on mid term break. and Im about to burn one myself. Im no loser thats for sure. only losers insult people they have never met or had any kind of interaction with, ahem here’s looking at you…… <.<

  • it would be nice if companies would test their gaes more before launch so these isues wouldnt plague games at launch. seems like valve is the only one that does this.

  • It probably has to do with the fact that it is summer and it is warmer in peoples’ homes and if you have an older model, which is prone to overheating, it will get hot from the graphic intensive game such as LA Noire.

  • The game looks nice but I see people signing in and out during game play all day. I will wait for an update.

PlayStation store will be back on Tuesday May 24th.

  • I’m not going to say who because I don’t want him to explode, But there is someone on this forum who is really messed up in the head. His posts are so schizo sounding they actually make the forum fun to read. Like reading the journal of a mad bomber who wears a tin-foil hat.

  • hey does ne 1 know whats goin on with Max Payne 3? been waitin on that game for almost 2 years now. wasnt it supposed to come out back in 09? then pushed to early 2010. jus wonderin. loved the first 2 games.

  • @22 Im in the south east and mine doesnt have… much problems, plus i got it somewhere around 2007

  • Thank god I treat my electronics like I treat my future children.

  • Those having overheat problems, how old is your system, and how much has it been utilized in the timeframe that you owned it? It sounds to me that LA Noire is a very resource intensive game, and perhaps the older systems that are in a weakish state from extensive use and age may have issues handling it. Added to the fact that the processor in the slim is a different model and doesn’t heat up as much as the one in the fatboy, and you get a greater potential for heat issues.

Look at it this way, i bet your home pc is newer than your ps3 for those who one the fatboy 60g. and chances are you got a new pc because you had issues with your old one, whether it be heating issues, blue screen or it was just plain slow.

perhaps fans would help, but aside from being able to play ps2 discs, the fatboy is an inferior system to the slim.

  • 6 days later and I can not redeem online pass’s still or acess my download list of stuff I have purchased. Not one single update.
