Rockstar Games and Sony Joint Statement on L.A. Noire

We have received a very small number of customer support questions about PS3s overheating or shutting down while playing L.A. Noire. At this time, Rockstar Games and Sony can confirm that neither L.A. Noire or firmware update 3.61 are causing the PS3 hardware to overheat. We are both committed to working hard to find solutions to this and any issues that may arise. If you are experiencing any issues with L.A. Noire or your PS3 hardware, please contact technical support using any of the means provided below:

  • Rockstar Games Should Make Another Grand Theft Auto were you can play on the Map Of Sacramento California…. If They Do Make The Map Of Sacramento On It, I’ll Buy like 3 Copies!!!!

  • damn y does psn store have to be down i want to play the new case for ps3

  • i was playing for 2 Hours and left it on, with the game on, for other 3 hours… and all it did was hang on me after 2 more hours, then i went back to playing and no more problems….

  • I havent played the game yet, but I have an 80 GB, and when I tried to download Qriosity it freezes my system, when it tells me it has found a new update. Has anyone had this problem before.

  • i wanna buy this game but if it will make my ps3 overheat……

  • I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and will be looking into taking this to the next level if Sony continues to turn a blind eye to the few of us who have the YLOD now due to either this game or the 3.61 patch burning out my console. A statement that “they have confirmed it was not LA Noire or the 3.61 patch” tells us nothing. How was this confirmed? Why are so many “fat” PS3 burning out? Does Sony make a console that hundreds or thousands of units burn out with in a few days form the 17th to the 19th? How many burn out on a daily basis? If Rockstar is to blame then why are we paying 59.99 to beta test Sony and Rockstars products? I want answers and you all should too!

  • Wow our systems are failing after all the other trouble you have had…but at least we know it is our fault, everything that has happened it must be us. Couldnt be sony and lack of security or poor updates, and no way it is rockstar games. I guess that leaves me, it must be my mistake for buying a product from a company that thinks it is untouchable. My fault for buying games from people who do business with a company that thinks it can do as it pleases without informing customers. I applaud your audacity Sony where other companies would admit problems you stand as a pillar of unmoving denial. So i take full blame and promise to learn from my mistakes as i am sure many others will, and someday soon we can all sit back and say, you remeber that company sony, how could they go under they have never done anything wrong.

  • when you send out free game package maybe you should make it so they fry all the systems and see if we buy new ones, that will make up for money lost during outage…sound like a good idea? maybe you can hire me and i can have fun riding this sinking ship with you

  • i dont have any problems playing it on my 250gb slm XD its a awesome game

  • I just got this game yesterday and as long as i’ve been playing it, it hasn’t overheated on me once.

  • Yo omg when is the store coming back? I want the new zombies pack! I have money y todo!!

  • i don’t have la noire but xbox has this problem…. If you people are having system overheats, buy a fan to cool it- 20 bucks at target- attach right to the back- it cools down fast. or put your system in a room at 68 or lower when playing- i’m not trying to be smart- just some tips that might helps with ps3

  • I love how every other thread on this blog has a comment from a moderator on it but this one does not. Kind of odd dont you think? Why would that be?

  • Also, system overheats could be caused by small space left on your console. if your running a 60 GB ps3 with 1 gig left and using la noire which is a 6 gb game- it might turn off to find resources

  • I am not trying to be super smart with all this stuff- i am just trying to help so don’t call me a smart a**

  • the only time I had a problem with it resetting or freezing was when I selected the DLC option and it tried to connect to the PSN store.

  • yes a friend of mine on ps network said he had a problem with his playstation overheating while playing L.A.NOIRE i think this problem may only be happening on old chunky ps3s but in not sure those old chunky ps3s always had problems my boyfriend has got a copy and he hasnt had any problems

  • yes, as far as i have heard this problem is not for the slims- well only the ones over 120 gbs don’t have problems, each game is about 4-7 Gb of space- thats only like 8-10 games on a 60 gb ps3

  • Interesting… Even though i haven’t played or bought L.A.Noire, I’m a little interested in knowing what is causing it.

  • I haven’t had any problems with the game at all, and I loves it. :D Probably my new favorite game.

  • When these type of problems start happening to me I know it is time to clean everything off the ps3 I don’t need, and then back up the data off system that I want to keep. I follow this with reformating the system; the long one so it’s like new again then reload my data. If you have not cleaned out the air holes on the system this can be a source of heat problems to. I shut the system down and use a vacume I am not sure how good that is but it works for me. The ps3 is a computer it requires similar upkeep if basic matinance is not being done there are going to be problems. If your system is older like mine it may also beneift by keeping half the hard drive half empty, I imagine most of you have thought of keeping a fan close to help shunt the heat away from it, avoid pointing the fan at the back of the ps3, If you do routine matinance weekly like vacuming, and reformating yearly, or when glitching starts, and are still having problems them a new system might be what is required sadly things break down over time. Hope the above helps you to get longer life, and better performance from your system.

  • @ AgentValentine,

I agree. I love the way they worked in the whole Black Dhalia stuff into this game, it is pretty awesome. I loved this era.

  • when is playstation store coming back?

  • can someone please advise me i have had my 320gig ps3 slim now for a month and i have just bought la noir today its still got the wrapper on but with reading some of the comments i am a bit scared of putting the game in it just in case something happens to it i have the update and everythings fine but i am not sure what to do now would you risk it or just take the game back what would you do please let me know i would be grateful for your answers

  • Turn my PS3 (60gb) on the first time since updating the firmware, and it shut off from overheating just idling for 20 minutes. I’m gonna speculate this issue has more to do with either the firmware or just with the ps3 sitting off for so long.

  • Right … i bet half those ps3 are first gen all dusty and in a hot ass room

  • I’ve not had any issues.

  • I,too have an 80 gig fat system. It crashed the day LBP2 came out.So I do not believe it is LA Noire that is causing the problem. As for everyone who’s system is dying this issue has been going on way before LA Noire came out. Here’s a question. Why can’t Sony do what microsoft did for the 360 by either repairing or replacing the faulty units ?.Do we not buy enough Sony products to be reimbursed as loyal consumers?

  • “At this time, Rockstar Games and Sony can confirm that neither L.A. Noire or firmware update 3.61 are causing the PS3 hardware to overheat. We are both committed to working hard to find solutions to this and any issues that may arise.”

If they can confirm neither is causing the overheat problem, why would they be “working hard to find solutions to this and any issues that may arise”? So there is not a problem, but they’re trying to find a solution anyway? Makes no sense. Time for somebody to man up and fix my PS3. Never a problem until this happened.

  • im still waiting on the PSN store to be up? im eying at those japanese imports for the PS1 section. have they caught that hacker yet?

  • acho que com o islin nao tem esse problema

  • Playing it with absolutely no problems on (’09 launch) 120 slim in the UK.

Maybe the limits have now been reached and exceeded for the processing power capabilities of the 1st generation fat PS3’s (and XBOX’s too) with new software featuring ever more cutting edge gaming technologies, which also maybe don’t sit too well with tired, old, full memory, previously overheated, (maybe clogged with dust) consoles.

  • i haven’t had any problems so far on my ps3. great game

  • i got a old 80 gig and i never had any issues and ive been playn la noire since it came out so…its all good

  • yea i also got the old 80 gig and never any problems, best ps3 out there!

  • Has anyone considered the fact that the PS3s might be overheating due to the hotter temperatures? It IS summer guys.

  • I just wish R* games would at least try to fix the trophie problem with Midnight Club L.A. :/ Should have platnium by now…

  • The probable cause of these overheats is idiots are putting their systems in tight corners or small spaces- overheating can be cause by OVERHEATING- it’s also summer- especially in the north because we have many lakes- way more humid

  • My 60gig “fat” boy die within the fist 20 min. of playing the game. I had a glitch were i was driving the first car you get, then suddenly it stopped and could not drive then I got out of the car and my guy started sinking into the ground until i was completely underground. I was able to run around though buildings and stuff and after about 2 min. of doing that I got the same exact problem everyone else has. I recorded it on my phone as proof.

  • commenced playing but Isee no problem so far.I love you Cole Team Bondi,RockStar,Sony and you!

  • I like how there are a few comments from the moderator on the EU blog on this same post, but he basically just repeated the same PR statement 3 times “There is not an over heating problem with the PS3” and then blames “the media” for the misunderstanding. The only reason the media picked up this story was because Rockstar Support clearly stated that there IS a problem with older PS3s and firmware 3.61 and they even stated that they had done several tests that prove it. You know there is a problem when all they can do is blame “the media”.

It’ll be interesting to hear how Sony responds to the Better Business Bureau complaints.

And for all the fanboys repeating the same thing ad nauseam about ventilation, dust and it being hot outside, I wonder what you’ll say when you have to pay $150 to repair your dead PS3 even though you’ve done everything you told others to prevent it. Maybe then you’ll realize that the older model PS3s have a manufacturing defect. Of course those of you with PS3 Slims may never realize what the issue is.

  • PSN just went down for me.
    IDK why but it.

  • i’ve had freeze ups on my fat 80gb which i upgraded to a 500gb hhd and its happened with other games before and at times when i turn on my system it tells me that my hhd isn’t installed..which has bugged me but once I turn off the system and start it up again it runs fine..It is not summer in Nyc and it’s been cool and abnormally rainy but ith asn’t given me problems of auto shut offs…After reading some of the comments from people with “fat” ps3 i think its something besides the older models…and having a slim version is worse no real fan to cool it..If mine were to break down sony would have to do something…my friend had to send his fat ps3 4 times before they gave him the slim…i don’t think its fair…after some of us spent 600 and others more to have to get a 300 version with nothing that we bought the 60 or 80gb for..i’m thinking hard if getting this game is gonna mess up my ps3..i’ll wait and see

  • My PS3 is overheating with GT5 after the 3.61, THANK YOU SONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I lose my PS3 you will pay me a new one. It was doing fine with the old OS.
Try to spend some more time doing good stuff instead of just avoid CFWing and the lame security at PSN.
My PS3 will be off until the next update just to avoid the meltdown…until there… what should I do SONY???????
    Xbox or pc?? lol

  • Playstation Store back 24 May if not it should be up 30-31 May

  • 3.61 firmware update kills PS3 consoles left and right after all. http://bit.ly/l1oxZJ – And it is not linked to any game. The only link is people trying to update and afterwards their consoles are bricked.

  • I have the original Ps3 80gb. and i been playing La Noire for 3 hours with NO freezes or flaws!!!! great game!!!

  • its up now and i like it
