Rockstar Games and Sony Joint Statement on L.A. Noire

We have received a very small number of customer support questions about PS3s overheating or shutting down while playing L.A. Noire. At this time, Rockstar Games and Sony can confirm that neither L.A. Noire or firmware update 3.61 are causing the PS3 hardware to overheat. We are both committed to working hard to find solutions to this and any issues that may arise. If you are experiencing any issues with L.A. Noire or your PS3 hardware, please contact technical support using any of the means provided below:

  • Ladies and Gentlemen:

With all due respect to your efforts to keep the peace and be of good behaviour, the statement is inherently nonsensical. If the “small number of reports” are true, and Sony is satisfied the consumer is not storing their system in a poorly ventilated area, then clearly there is some aspect of the software that is overtaxing a limited number of systems. Determine what the common element to the consumers’ systems are, and then determine what aspect of the software is creating the issue. This isn’t about “blame”, it’s about a solution. Find it and patch it. Rockstar, grow a pair and take responsibility for your product and work with the system provider. Goodwill goes a long way in business. Try it sometime. * End communication*

  • I have called Sony Customer support line evryday since my PS3 has burned out due to this. Every time I call and speak with someone they act as if it is the first time anyone has called them about this issue. I find it very hard to belive that they have heard nothing of this LA.Noire or 3.61 patch burnning up the consoles untill i call. I also have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau due to the shody business parctice being dispalyed by Sony here. I recomend that anyone else who has had the same issue with them to do the same. Its easy to do and can be done online very quickly. I also will look into seeing if a calss action lawsuit has been filed already for this and see about that if i get no satisfaction from Sony first thing Monday. The only way they will hear us is if we all stand together.

Maybe its because most of the people posting that they have had problems is because they are playing on an old model. Or maybe it is coincidence that your ps3 died while playing L.A. noire.

  • DARKKNIGHT_2518

Why would a specific game or firmware update cause your ps3 to overheat? It also shouldnt matter what model you have, as long as there isnt a defect in one of the models. The only reason your ps3’s are dying is because they are old and dusty and dont have proper ventilation. So all of you who are going to complain about your fat old ps3 dying, go buy a slim.

  • Now, if 360s are also overheating playing LA Noire then I guess it super obvious what’s causing this to the older PS3s.

  • Are people really that ignorant? I have played countless games. I played Dragon Age 2 the other day for about 4 hours straight. No problems.

I have the 40g 2nd Gen model I was playing LA Noire and my PS3 didn’t freeze up for overheat or anything but after an hour of playing the game; the fan was extremely loud. My PS3 is out in the open so its not due to ventilation.

I didn’t take any chances as much as I wanted to play. I turned it off. I’m not gonna play the game until we find out whats up. I played another game right after and the fan was fine.

My guess is this game just uses a ton of system resources and processing power. Hopefully, they can patch something up for it because imo sinces its happening to PS3 and 360 users alike. It falls on R*.

  • the problem is not related to any game. all ps3 models slim and fat are affected randomly it seems. The firmware update 3.61 *can* potentially lead to your console to be bricked. Fact. I do not even have LA Noire and the update bricked my PS3 Slim (120GB). Keeping this comment in moderation as with my previous one where I gave specific links to this problem will not help Sony.

  • I’m getting Flashbacks of how my Original 80gb PS3 keeps losing its Blu-ray funtionality with both Fallout games. Still haven’t sent it in after it had the Same issue with New Vegas. Saving up the $120 to get it fixed… lol. Good Luck guys…

  • love the game works great for me …i have 80gb

  • MAYBE your just playing it to long since its such an awesome game…..just maybe :)

  • Still haven’t had any problems with the game except a couple glitches. I saw one glitch where Phelps was in the Captains office and they were talking, then the whole room disappeared and you could see “blue hell”. That was kind of funny, but other than that I haven’t had anything go wrong with the system yet..

  • I wish there was online play in this game….then i might have got it :(

  • when i playstation store going to be back ? ….. i seriously need it

  • People aren’t getting the game because there’s no online play? Call of Duty is ruining gaming.

  • I’m still waiting for The new san andreas lol

  • The bottom line is something is going on whether it be the firmware or whatever but the xbox is having the same problems, my friend is a Store Manager at Gamestop in CA. a increased number of people have been calling in about both systems going to crap around when the game released and wanting to know more about it. So think what you want..SOMETHING IS GOING ON

  • Someone needs to man up and resolve this issue.

  • Gamepro says Playstation Store will be back up on May 24th

  • Hello,
I’m having trouble playing the games Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty Black Ops and Resident Evil 5.
DLCs are installed on the PS3 HD, but the games do not recognize the DLCs.
Before the 3.61 update the games recognize the DLCs, but not now recognized.
I am sending the list of games that I bought on PSN.

  • The problem is that there is so much information on the disk and the eye does not get a break and the ps3’s tend to get pretty because of it. Even when I pause the game the eye lens keeps moving nonstop I would assume that this would be the cause…

  • L.A. Noire is simply an amazing game but there’s just so much info on disk that the playstation tends to get warm

  • storeplz

Since the store is finally coming tuesday, can you guys post the drop tonight like you did before? I”m really jonesing to buy some new games!

  • ! am not gunna try and diagnose what is wrong, like a lot of people are doing on here..I will let the professionals see whats going on.

  • The “problem” is probably people just playing the hell out of the game for hours on end. How many times have we seen this with a big game release? “Game X broke my console”. Your console broke while you were playing Game X, not BECAUSE you were playing Game X. There’s a difference.

  • The problem could likely be due to the console’s location or the vents being blocked or full of dust. They should be cleaned before you try again if the problem still occurs. Also, it could be local to certain console models or luck. There are many games that people complained about causing problems that didn’t happen for everyone. The most likely problem, though, is a problem with the user, unfortunately.

  • GeneralTechnique

Sony blogs, press releases, statements, and articles are starting to sound like Fox News.

  • wen will the store going to be onlyne

  • tha-price-u-payy

Anyone know a place to buy this game in Isreal?

  • Its probably because things overheat when you play for 16 hours straight, way to make a totally addicting game once again.

  • hmmm my ps3 only freezes if i check the la noire playstation store thing before i do any cases (in the main menu)

  • @ tha-price-u-payy

    Try ordering it online.

  • my play station 3 overheating on me right now

  • my playstation 3 can’t get disc out have a yellow light on it playstation 3 system

  • MY PS3 DOESNT WORK NOW AFTER PLAYING THE GAME!!!!!!!!!!#$%)(*&#

  • And I was gonna buy it last week. Thanks for the info.

  • @330 you need a new ps3.

  • Yea its the old models its got to be, i played it just fine on my 320 gb awsome ps3, now back to the black ops its xp week end till tomorow!! by the way I LOVE YOU SONY THANKS FOR THE UPDATE

  • So far nothing unusual while playing LA Noire. Though I do only play for an hour or two, then I want to shoot fools in MAG.

To reiterate, play any game in moderation and your systems will last. Think that your console is a say an F1 or Nascar. Play for hours on end every day and it’s apt to malfunction on you as an F1 or Nascar would do the same if you raced it every single day at top performance. They need to rest now and again.

Hurry up Sony with full restoration…please. Need to redeem codes, etc.

  • so if your using an old model you deserve to have your system break???

  • Hi guys.

As all of you, I had the notification about the PSN services had been restablished since the last May 15. I had access to upgrade the software and change my password but, since that day until today, services as PlayStation Store, RockBand 3 Music Store and Qriocity, are unavailable in my PS3. Each time to I try to access, the following messages appear :

    – PlayStation Store: This Service is currently undergoing maintenance.
    – RockBand 3: Unable to connect to the Music Store server at this time. Please try again later.
    – Qriocity: A connection to the server could not be stablished.

Can I get solution of these tomorrow Tuesday?

    Really, I hope.

  • This is a joke. I’ve been anticipating this game for months, but absolutely will NOT be buying it… I’ve seen too much evidence to support the fact that this game over-heats and crashes PS3’s… To the contrary of what many think, it is NOT the firmware update, as this happens with many Xbox 360 copies as well.. I’ve dug around and done the research, the blame for this failure rest soley with Rockstar games and Team Bondi. Just look up “LA NOIR PS3 overheat” on youtube, and there are a handful of vids proving the problem is out there, despite the B.S Rockstar is trying to feed us all. Anyone who has bought this game and has had their systems comprimised need to come together and petition this game, show the money hungry and arrogant R* games that we will not have the wool pulled over our eyes. There NEEDS to be a lawsuit, because this is not right at all.

  • Which is a shame, because Rockstar games has been one of my absolute favorite game developers, since I first played GTA 3 back in 2001.. not to mention RDR is one of my favorite games of all time… it’s disheartening to see one of my favorite video game companies acting this way, and basically pointing the blame of their mistakes onto the consumers, with it’s obviously their fault. It’s bad for business when they won’t even respond to concerns or give us solid answers, but I doubt they care… The dudes at R* games sleep on a pile of money.

  • DARN IT!! This game looks cool. I have a 320 GB slim PS3. will it work on that?

  • Thanks 339. My question was answered.

  • @Klokateer1986 True indeed Rock star will never get another cent from my pocket. That fact is Sony has to step up and force Rockstars hand in this. It is obvious that there is somthing to all of this and this whole game of pushing the blame on the consumer is flat out wrong. Like i have posted on here before if you were one of the ones that had gotten burt by this file a report with the Better Business Bureau online. Just google the B.B.B. and it will take a mater of seconds to finish the report. Let them have to answer to someone by addressing the problem instead of pretending there is no problem at all.

  • Launch fatties have garbage lasers. When the tech was new it was expensive so Sony had to cut costs somewhere. My 60GB fatty’s blu-ray laser was doing the freezing dance of death last year so I replaced it with a better quality assembly and have had no problems ever since. Like has already been stated, the only time it ever froze on me was when attempting to access the Store in-game to see if it was up. And that was a soft lock, easily solved by ejecting the disk. Other than that L.A. Noire has been running fine the whole time. No overheating here in Florida in 90 degree weather (though I don’t know why people complain about their system overheating in summer months. Doesn’t everyone have central air nowadays?).

  • @348

“Doesn’t everyone have central air nowadays?”

No. I don’t. I don’t even have a standard air conditioner in my room, the only air conditioner I have in my home is down stairs, we have lots of computers and electronics running in my home, so I can’t have an air conditioner in my room. The electric bill would be too high, and believe it or not there are people in this country that struggle financially. Not all of us can afford central air.

So every time someone like me turns on our PS3’s in the summer, we run the risk of destroying our beloved gaming system, and sadly unlike microsoft, Sony charges a fortune for repairs. It’s the equivalant to a wife stuck in an abusive relationship, she gets slapped around, but stays with the man regardless.

  • I had my first LA Noire freeze, I had just turned on my PS3 Slim, so it was still cold. Yet I played LA Noire the first day I got t for about 10 hours straight.

Seems to me there is something wrong with the game.

At least I only rented it.
