PlayStation Move sharp shooter Origins – Part Two

In part one of our look at the origins of the PlayStation Move sharp shooter, we saw how the peripheral began life as a side project at Guerrilla. In the second part, we learn how the Guerrilla team received valuable help from their friends at Zipper Interactive.

Guerrilla’s proposal for a Move-based peripheral was sent to SCE Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida and the Sony Product Design group, who circulated it among other studios for input. The proposal met with very enthusiastic reactions. “When we saw the foam-board-and-duct-tape mockup, we were like ‘Cool, let’s make that!’” Sony Product Design Manager Ennin Huang recalls.

It wasn’t long before Guerrilla was contacted by developers from other shooters like SOCOM 4, Time Crisis: Razing Storm and Dead Space: Extraction. Zipper Interactive Game Director Seth Luisi, who’d already been looking into a PlayStation Move-based control scheme for SOCOM 4, took a particular interest in the project. “Seth strongly felt that a gun peripheral could bring an additional level of immersion and realism to the table,” Guerrilla Game Director Mathijs de Jonge says. “Like Killzone 3, SOCOM 4 was still in its early stages, so the timing made sense for him as well.”

With each iteration, the design evolved away from the StA-11.

The Zipper team suggested several highly useful additions to the gun peripheral design. “For instance, they wanted players to be able to reload without taking their hands off the navigation controller,” Mathijs explains. “This could be solved by adding pump-action mechanism to the fore grip. Also, they noted that many tactical shooters, including SOCOM 4, featured weapons with multiple modes of fire, which would require the inclusion of a fire selector switch.”

With basic shape and functionality hammered out, the gun peripheral entered the prototyping phase. “Every six weeks, a new plastic gun peripheral would arrive from China for us and the team at Zipper to comment on,” Guerrilla Lead Concept Designer (and resident weapons expert) Roy Postma says. “And with each iteration, you could see the design come into its own more. The style of the weapon became more neutral, less Killzone-specific.”

Enhancements included a more ergonomic angle for the fore grip, an adjustable and collapsible stock instead of the foldable one, and overall weight reductions to facilitate prolonged play. “Sadly, some features fell by the wayside during this process,” Roy says. “We originally wanted to have an ammo counter display above the stock, but it just proved too costly.”

The color of the weapon changed too, evolving from the gunmetal grays of the original design, to a jet black version, to the more neutral grays of the final product. “From a legal and marketing perspective we had to impose some constraints,” Ennin says. “The black version looked menacing, but would have violated most countries’ gun laws.” Even the first grey prototypes proved difficult to get through customs, as Mathijs found after a demonstration at a conference.

Meanwhile, the teams at Guerrilla and Zipper experimented with Move control systems for their respective games, figuring out sensible settings for dead zone, aim assistance and controller sensitivity. “Initially we wanted to map a lot of in-game actions to player gestures as well,” Mathijs says, “but that turned out to interfere with player aim too much. So we restricted it to short, simple movements like thrusting the gun peripheral to perform a melee.”

The final production prototype in all its glory.

The gun peripheral went into full production in the run-up to Killzone 3’s launch. Early hands-on reports of the device – now dubbed the PlayStation Move sharp shooter – were almost unanimously positive, with many reporters expressing pleasant surprise at how solid and natural the peripheral felt during play.

“In terms of control methods, nothing feels more natural than the sheer simplicity of ‘Point, Aim, Shoot’”, Ennin says. Mathijs concurs: “The peripheral made Killzone 3 immediately accessible to people who had never played a Killzone title before. Some reporters even stated that they preferred to play Killzone 3 with the sharp shooter instead of the DualShock 3, because they felt more immersed. That was a huge compliment for us.”
But it wasn’t until the week before Killzone 3’s release that Mathijs realized his other goal for the sharp shooter had also been achieved. “I was watching the PlayStation commercial for Killzone 3 and the sharp shooter and I suddenly realized, you know what – Kevin Butler looks absolutely badass holding that thing! That’s when I knew we’d fully achieved what we set out to do.”

The sharp shooter is available now as a standalone accessory and as part of the SOCOM 4 Full Deployment Edition.

I’m only briefly eyeing over a few of these comments from people complaining about the store. Unfortunately I feel many of you are wasting your time even saying anything. Sony is working to get the store backup, it’s not like they want it to be down. They know many of us (myself included with PSP and PS3 titles) with DLC we have codes for or for stuff we want to purchase. They don’t gain money with the store being down and it costs them more for every moment a DLC code goes inactive because of a deadline as someone will have to correct that by hand (as I doubt they have a system in place for all of this). 3rd Party publishers/developers are also not happy with this situation and they have been vocal about this. It’s all bad press and you can bet Sony is working to get the store backup when they promised (Before the end of this month).

We can live without the PS Store until they get everything worked out. The store needs to be secured and I’d rather they work on that instead of rushing it to completion because a few malcontents are unhappy due to them not being to download a map pack, skin, or extra optional mission. New games being the exception

  • @ 151 i agree need stop this complaining joy rest of holiday with your family cook out

  • i like the erlier model

  • Man I love these posts! And all you people complaining about the store.. CALM DOWN! I want the store badly also but I don’t need to rant on ever blog post!

    you clearly suck at life

  • @everything zech678 has said. You are obviously not american, if you are your grammar and spelling sucks.

I care about the playstation store also, but you people need to wait. And dont get your hopes up for the store to be up by tomorrow, it was an estimate.

    The gun looks cool.

Just thought i’d put this here

  • Even when people pay for it they still don’t speak up. its not about being free, its about the proper treatment of the consumers telling them what they want to know not throwing crap in everybody face like we are some kind of slaves who will continue to support this type of business conduct. The thing i realize about Americans we rather be entertained than know the truth about things. its feels safer and takes less work. What happened with Sony is a permanent scar.

  • @157 shut up

  • when r u gnna put ps store back up

  • Ok, I’m getting board of making Shao Kahn explode for the last month… Soo, wheres the store?

  • Amazing still no store update. Also for the assclowns saying oh psn is free and all you want is free stuff etc etc. I paid for a year of PSPlus so I have ever right to get on here and complain all i want about the store still being down, On top of that I have several games i can not play because my PS3 got a YLOD, Got my new Slim PS3 in the mail the other day.

I can’t play certain games I have cause they require a online passcode that has to be downloaded from none other then the PS Store like Homefront…I can’t play that or MK among a bunch of other games. I have add on’s i bought well before the big shutdown, Hell i have a ton of games both PSN and PS3 games bought and paid for like mass effect 2,burnout paradise, warhawk etc BUT wait can’t play those cause i have to re-download them from the damn store. I am not the only person going through that roadblock…So there ya go it’s not all about getting free stuff. While the free stuff coming is great there are plenty of people out there like my self that could care less about it. I just want to be able to download what i need to play games like homefront etc online.

As others have already said a simple blog update about it would ease most every one.

  • All Playstation and Qurocity services should be restored by the end of the month. That’s tomorrow. Everyone trolling the site asking for the store should relax for the next 24 hours and then if its not there complain away. As for right now, respect yourself and the people from Killzone, who are bringing you this special on the Sharpshooter. It’s an awsome piece of technology advancement that we don’t get to see everyday. I think it is way cool but I don’t have $180 to spend on the deployment pack. I hope that all of you trolling and complaining about not having your store sell your PS3’s tommorrow when the store isn’t back up right at 8 a.m. I’ll be the one laughing when this Sharpshooter gets a price drop and your Xbox360 isn’t compatible. Stop trolling and wait. Enjoy the Sharpshooter. It’s awsome.

  • eyesofreality03

off topic, you guys and gals really need to just blog your complaints about the store. it is becoming more and more childish every day with this nonsense.

on topic, i played with the sharpshooter at a friends house and i gotta say is quite amazing to use in both kz3 and socom 4, i don’t own one…yet…but when i got the funds i will surely get it. and more posts like this on the blog are welcomed to me personally, i love seeing the evolution of design on products like this. i really want to see what the move controller looked like before the final product was released.

  • And Maj_Mosh you can play your MK online go ahead and try if you even really own it.I paid for all my content i cant access now either but the store will be back up its just a matter of when but if your looking for updates about PSN this is not the official PSN site or anything close its a blog for anything relevent to Playstation. So spend less time crying and more time playing your games that you “own”

  • I HAVENT GOT THE SHARPSHOOTER YET.BUT I DO MOVE FOR SOCOM4.

  • I HAVE PSMOVE

  • ADD ME

  • Whiteboy7thst is awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Pointing gun at ps3

  • blah blah blah u must be copying Wii psn stop putting up this useless confusing crap and let us burn some money on the ps store we r waiting patiently by the way i got alot of money to burn and stuff so hurry up ya’ll are getting annoying putting up stuff about the move system its confusing useless and gets on my nervs ill admit its fun sometimes but ranting on and on about makes me wonder……..do you guys care about us or r u just trying to stoll us by putting up a bunch of crap about this junk that is confusing while u guys hardley work on the store that people want MORE then the move

hurry up psn im a big fan and love my ps3 want the store quick

  • HURRY UP GIVE US THE STORE NO ONE GIVES A DAMN STOP TRYING TO WASTE TIME PSN.

  • Seriously, as many have stated that the store is unimportant because it will be online, it generates a big revenue, shutting it down permanently would make Sony look bad, so stop complaining and find solace in the fact that the network is online and that the rest will come, remember, patience is a virtue

  • #12 definitely has his priorities straight!!!
    I agree with him

And also the PS Move is awesome!

  • dA_dRuNkEn_OnE_

Why the hell are this little children here complaining about the store? This is the history of the sharpshooter I don’t see anything with Store in the title. Besides its called Patience. The Psn is partly back up which is fine by me. As long as sony takes their time to fix this they can take however long they want.

  • yeah the map pack comes out soon just get the store back up!

  • now thats COOL

  • Thats pretty exciting! I can’t wait to play with this thing. I love guns, and I love video games, so this is just perfect. I will never play a FPS game with the move unless I have something like this, I’ve tried to play without one, and its almost impossible. Good deal.

  • @ the people who saying you can’t download stuff that you have already download

but you can on your ps3 or psp go to Account Management> Transaction Management> Download List and there you go you can now download all the games/demos/dlc that you have download

  • sony should record the id of everyone hwo complained about the psn and store restorations and not give them a welcome back package. they dont deserve it. id rather be in a room with crying babies than read these responses, there’s less complaining.

  • and the gun looks kik glass. imma get one once i get my kz3

  • @djml9 lol yeah and suspend them for at least a week when the store comes back up

  • i just read MORE comments(idk why) and what i want to say has so much profanity that i would get kicked off the psn.

  • Since this blog didn’t get the respect it deserved i’ll be one of the few people to say ; Thanks for the blog post Killzone Community it was a great read( no seriously it was, i love stories like this)

  • give us a playstation store update please

  • The one with the laser site and flashlight looks pretty sick. And the magazine looks removable, so maybe you take it out and put it back in to reload? that would be cool.

  • looks so cool

  • @ 121 I dont think This would work with dead island verry well, from what I’ve read its going to be relying mainly on melee weapons.

  • I bought one.

    It kind of sucks.

Maybe I gotta mess with some settings or something.

  • wen do we have psn store, can please comment back

  • I want the store so i can get past level 5 in homefront its freaking stupid thatit has taken this long. more details would be nice. and its stupid that you have to pu in a code to advance past levl 5 and my keyboard on my brandnew sony viao sucks it cus out

  • bring it on out

  • it would have been cool if the light up ammo counter had not of been removed from this, but it probably would have made this a $100 controller accessory as apposed to a $40. Since there was talk of attachments for the sharpshooter in the prototype faze could there still possibly be some attachments made for the sharpshooter? I just figured since we do have the rail system on top. A red dot scope would be really really cool, or i would even buy an attachable ammo counter. I love my sharpshooter, its the only way i play Killzone 3.

  • Cool article.

The sharp shooter sucks though. Tried it at friends house.

Super heavy. Arms get tired after a few minutes of play. Controls aren’t as intuitive as a dual shock controller.

Prefer the frag fx shark as main controller.

Haven’t tried move on my system, but imagine the camera facing the projector may cause interference, anyone have experience with projectors and Move controllers? If so what size is your screen? Currently rocking 92 inches but new place has room to go 120 inches.

  • i want one of these

  • lol who else thinks that the first picture looks WAY better than the last?

  • @Koolaid Yeah, I posted a segment from that [comments open to everyone, but don’t be a jerk] as well last week after some jerk sent me an actual message to my PS3 account saying I couldn’t comprehend past a 5th grade level because my gamer score is 5?! Gave me a great laugh, considering I’m in college… and the response was because I made a comment on a blog saying everyone should stop whining because it’s pointless… You can’t expect everyone to be logical.

On the bright side, they’ve announced it’ll all be up by the end of this week!
    (incredibly some are still complaining)

Even if they miss this new deadline I won’t lose any sleep and Sony still has my business…

Man, that is a sweet gun!
