PlayStation Vita

Just moments ago during our 2011 E3 press conference we proudly unveiled an incredible 2011 software lineup and amazing new PS3 peripherals, and also shed new light on our highly anticipated handheld gaming device, officially named PlayStation Vita (PS Vita). “Vita,” which means “Life” in Latin, was chosen as the name for our next-generation portable entertainment system because it enables a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context.

By blurring the lines between interactive entertainment and reality, our goal was to design a device that offered a revolutionary combination of rich gaming capabilities and social connectivity, bringing users closer to each other and closer to their gaming experiences wherever they are. Connectivity was a key objective and our goal was to create experiences and content that would challenge the traditional notions of gaming. It was vital to make a device that was an extension of a user’s entertainment world, no matter where one would go.

PlayStation Vita

Successively launching in the global market for $249 starting the end of this year, PS Vita incorporates a beautiful 5-inch multi-touch organic light emitting diode (OLED) as the front display and a unique multi-touch pad on the rear. Two analog sticks enable a wider range of game genres. Together with the front touch screen and the rear touch pad, PS Vita offers new gameplay, enabling entirely new experiences.

ATT

We know you’ve been closely following all of the news since we announced the product in January. With mobile connectivity playing a huge role in PS Vita’s interactive experience, we know many of you have been wondering what carrier will be helping us bring you closer to other users and closer to your gaming experiences on the go. Today, we proudly announced a partnership with AT&T, which powers the nation’s fastest mobile broadband network, who will serve as the exclusive service provider for PS Vita in the United States. By having both Wi-Fi and 3G/Wi-Fi models available, PS Vita will enable infinite possibilities for you to “encounter,” “connect,” “discover,” “share” and “play” with your friends wherever they are.

The excitement doesn’t stop there. We believe that 2011 will be a defining year as we usher in a new era of portable gaming. With the official North American unveiling of PlayStation Vita also comes the introduction of an extensive line-up of software for the platform. PS Vita’s launch lineup is a force to be reckoned with, featuring exciting and attractive new titles from SCE Worldwide Studios, including UNCHARTED: Golden Abyss, LittleBigPlanet, and Ruin (working title), which utilize PS Vita’s groundbreaking technology to make unprecedented immersive, interactive and social game play available on-the-go. In addition, titles such as Little Deviants, Hot Shots Golf, Reality Fighter, Hustle Kings, ModNation Racers, Wipeout, Super Stardust Delta and a broad range of third-party game developers and publishers make use of PS Vita’s unique feature set. We can let all of you know that the biggest and best 1st and 3rd party gaming franchises will be coming to PS Vita.

Further enhancing your entertainment experience are new PS Vita features, such as “LiveArea,” an interactive space for each PS Vita software title that allows you to access the latest game information through PlayStation Network; “near,” a pre-installed application that lets you see what other PS Vita users in the vicinity are playing; “Party,” which lets you voice chat or text chat while playing games or using the Internet browser; and “Welcome Park,” a tutorial application designed specifically to guide you through PS Vita’s new user interface. • This is absolutely amazing. Well except the whole AT&T part. That was a bad choice. I’ll be getting the wifi only version day 1 for sure

  • I just looked at the list of games. Nice list…..if you’re a frickin’ FPS, Puzzle, Fantasy or Arcade racing Gamer.

WHERE IN THE F*** IS GRAN TURISMO? YOU KNOW, SONY, THAT THIS IS THE FIRST PS CONSOLE REVEAL EVER WITHOUT THE NAME GRAN TURISMO IN IT, RIGHT?

C’MON, I KNOW THAT GT PSP WAS A COLOSSAL FAILURE, TO SAY THE VERY LEAST, FROM WHAT I HEARD FROM GT FANS AND CRITICS (I never played the game, but 74 on Metacritic, are you f***ing serious???), BUT STILL, YOU NEED TO GO TO KAZ IN TOKYO AT SOME POINT AND GET DOWN ON BOTH KNEES AND LITERALLY BEG THAT MOTHERF***ER TO MAKE A GT GAME FOR VITA, OR I’M NOT BUYING, PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

(Sorry for the language, but this is a big shock to me that almost demands a thorough explanation that us GT fans are probably not going to get.)

  • CROSS GAME CHAT FOR THE PS3
and no im not getting this :/ not a fan of portable gaming devices

  • So its still coming in White? …Please say yes Sony Please I need a white one!!

  • Dear Sony,

    Take my MONEY

    Sincerely, Going to be BROKE

  • Looking forward to Playstation Vita. I heard about a name change going into today’s event. Saw it on other websites that I’d rather not say. As far as people Booing AT&T at tonight’s show, Verizon already has a Playstation Style phone that just came out around last month or so. I’d figure it would be between $200-300 range. That sounds about right for what the pontential features that Vita will have moving forward. I’d look forward to seeing more stories about Vita here on the Playstation Blog.

    Great Show,
    Thanks, Train

  • The PS Vita looks pretty awesome. I especially like that it has a version of Uncharted for it. I am truly disappointed that you chose to partner with AT&T. They have the worst customer service of all the cellular carriers. I guess I’ll have to wait for a system that is Sprint capable.

  • It looks awesome good job Sony :D

  • Whats with the memory on this thing? I looked at the tech specs and see no hard drive or sdcard slots. If I have to save to a cloud the vita is a pass

  • PlayStation Vita Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww ( best homer simpson voice)

  • Street Fighter vs Tekken looked crazy sharp, just like Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Super Stardust Delta.

  • I like the name and i love the price. I was expecting this mofo to be like 400 dollars to be honest… wow playstation way to step your game up. Kick some 3DS ass.

  • yea love this

  • Awesome, looking foward to this!

  • what about the memory good price really i thought it would 300 dollas

  • Love it, day ONE.

  • Awesome news! Awesome price! Can’t wait for the official release date, Thanks Sony!

  • The OS looks a lot nicer with the new background, icon lighting and shadows. Some of the icons like Party and Friends could be better though.

  • Well for those X-game chat experts I see your back without fail. But you are tenacious and someday in the future your tenacity will be rewarded. But when Anonymous hacked the network they tried to get you that X-game Chat but failed.

Seriously though, the “Party” chat application is not really cross-game chat like your X-box Live is, this is a special Android feature. Yes “Android” since that is the working OS that comes with the the PS Vita so it is definitely taking PlayStation into the world of Google Gaming in Android.

And until PS3 gets a FW update to change its OS it may be harder to get there with X-game chat. Also the PS3’s lack of physical memory that would be available to allow this, there is a rumor that a single publisher of games has a problem with X-game chat on PS3 and if that publisher is Activision then Sony should cut loose of any Activision support and just bust their coders by making X-game chat available any way. Because Activsion is really one publishing arm of M$, with “timed” exclusive content that makes games nearly not worth buying on PS3, as a matter of fact I don’t buy Activision games just for the reason of timed exclusives and their destruction of CoD’s IW founders.

  • why do you guys release the Xperia Play on Verizon, then give the Vita to AT&Crap? comeon

  • Wow, what an amazing handheld. Getting the Wi-Fi version for sure. Sucks that AT&T will be providing the data for the 3G version, but hopefully you can tether with a smartphone. The game lineup so far looks great. Maybe more games will be revealed at TGS. :)

  • I’m not too sure if I like the fact that it has touch controls on the back. Seems like it will interfere with gameplay.

  • if this doesnt get monster hunter, i really wont be interested. and im not interested in the at&t 3g, so wifi only for me.

  • PARTY ROCKERS IN THE HOUSE TONIGHT EVERYBODY JUST HAVE A GOOD TIME AND WE GONE MAKE YOU LOSE YOUR MIND EVEYBODY JUST HAVE A GOOD TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • $249.99???? thats how much a nintendo 3ds cost and DS sucks xD
    ADD ME

  • this is the future

  • What the hell? Am I the only person who was happy that it is AT&T? I just switched to them because verizon sucks, always adding charges to my bill and hoping I wont notice, and I lost service with them everywhere, With AT&T I have service everywhere, when noone else on my crew does. Why in the world would anyone want to go Verizon? Good job Sony, I wasn’t really excited about this until I watched the E3 press conference, but now, I might just get it just for Ruin.

  • Wi-Fi version to me, probably won’t buy it in Day 1.

Nice talk about functionalities, quite nothing against the name itself even if it sounds dumb, very weird choice of 3G service (I mean very weird, I doubt Jack’s personal 3G is AT&T. Doubt it.), kind of nice gameplay of sorts, but where 3DS really took a dump and sat over it was in the initial game line-up.

I’m not the Playstation fanboy here, but what keeps me buying Playstation stuff are the games and you’re not gonna get anywhere with me with games I already play on my PS3 – unless they have something new and awesome, wich almost seems to be the case with Littlebig Planet. Almost.

Not sure this will be a Day 1 purchase for me, there’s still a lot to be shown, a lot about the game format, the older PSP games, the battery (oh, yeah, I’m looking to you there 3D boy), all these secondary functions most people won’t care about… You still gotta tell us pretty much everything that matters.

What I can tell you is that, when I buy it, it’ll definetly be the Wi-Fi only version. Don’t screw up on anything else.

  • i WANT ONE ALREADY!!!.

  • You guys, they said something about other service providers during the conference. I know you hate AT&T, but it will be ok.

  • The new PSvista (NGP) is going to be sick. I can’t wait to but it. Are there any other carriers that will be offered other than AT&T, or is that all?

  • AT&T was a VERY bad move.

  • this is day one buy for me. im also getting the playstation branded Playstation 3D TV

  • 1. Dont really care for the name change,
    2. Monthly fee for 3G service?
    3. Cross game play with ps3?
    4. Any chance of getting game as bundles? ie…ps3 and psp?

  • release date!?!?!?!!?!??!!?

  • Definitely gonna buy this! Nice job sony!

  • I willl get this!!!!! PS Vita. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh :)

  • this is freaking awesome day one purchase!!!

  • Totally awsome E3 announcements! Awesome PSVITA price! Massive launch lineup ! Only one thing left…..the official launch date! Thanks Sony……I can’t wait.

  • aww i just bought a psp go, oh well funk it this is a stunning device so much to offer for a low price, and finally a party chat love it, now i can throw away my xbox and have a somewhat ps3 in my pocket effin love it sony you guys amaze me every year..

  • dominicanlife809

any one know the release date for this?

  • I really want to buy this day 1. But The PSV suffers the same hardware design flaw as the PSP 1000. Speaker placement. The speakers will easily be covered up by a players thumbs. So Sony will need to make a PSV 2000 that moves the speakers to the top of the system just like the PSP 2000….

  • Amazing job with this Sony and the price is spot on. I’m not a big fan of contract exclusive 3G deals tho but I’ll take the wifi version.

Games look amazing and all the tech you jammed into it make it worth. I can’t wait for the Holiday season to get here now.

  • BiezulbubBill69

Can’t wait to buy the VITA!!!!!!!!

  • Awesome, I like NGP more then PSVita but oh well. I’m only getting the Wifi one, AT&T suxs and their support isn’t any better.

Kind of the reason we are happy not to be with them for internet.

  • Way to go Sony, Consider it SOLD!!! 8)

  • Mind = blown

  • Awwww, Sony, why ya have to go and make my 3ds look like junk? Honestly can’t wait to buy this beast, gettin the 3g of course…I was drooling constantly over the conference about it….Like many, I’m not over the top about the name. I kinda was hoping you’d just stick with NGP. I was simple but stuck well.

Though I do have to laugh at most that are complaining about at&t. Especially for all of you that don’t read the news knowing that it is about to buy t-mobile. And why wait for a second version of vita, sounds like your gonna be waitin a long time and missin out on a lot of ps goodness….your loss, gettin mine day one

  • pretty awsome device….im buying it!!

  • Everyone talkin about AT&T. TBH, i have a iphone 3G, AT&T, and i have NEVER had a drop call, and i have server more times that Verizon. so screw you, im paying $50 extra for 3G, and while im on the street playin online, imma rub it in ur face. and its funny, in 09 i bought my psp, traded in psp 2000 for this. and pspgo is $250. your paying the same price for 1,000 more things…. funny
