Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for PS3

These days, Hideo Kojima is a busy man. The Metal Gear mastermind recently revealed that the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is heading to the PS3 this November. The HD Collection includes revamped versions of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, complete with dual-analog-stick controls, 1080p graphics, smoother frame rates, a redesigned user interface, rumble support and much more.

We caught up with Kojima last week at an appearance in Mexico City and he was eager to speak with PlayStation.Blog readers. Enjoy the Q&A, and leave your favorite Metal Gear moments in the comments!

PlayStation.Blog: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was designed for PSP — a portable device. What changes did Kojima Productions make to the upcoming PS3 version so it could be enjoyed on a high-definition home console?

Hideo Kojima, Director, Kojima Productions: The PSP obviously has fewer buttons than the PS3 controller, and it had some limitations when it comes to control. Using the DualShock 3, movement of many things improved…as did, of course, [the addition of] rumble support.

On the PSP, it was also hard to tell some textures apart. Now, rendered in HD, they are much easier to see. The in-game text is also easier to read.

PSB: Your process of “transfarring” will allow PSP players to take their Peace Walker save files from one console to another, and we will also see similar cross-play support with the PS Vita and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. Is this the future of gaming, and would you like to explore beyond what already has been announced?

Kojima: Peace Walker is the first step. It is a PSP game in HD that lets one go back and forth between one PSP and a PSP. The next step is to take PS2-quality games, such as Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3, to HD and then to take them to Vita transfarring.

My next step is games that will come out for the PS3 from now on, so I can take advantage of this technology with the Vita with content that is exactly the same. I hope that cloud service is available now, and it would be ideal for me if transfarring were to serve as a bridge between the two services.

PSB: Just before E3, a glimpse of what will be its new graphic engine (FOX Engine) was shown. What would you say are their greatest visual benefits? Is there anything that stands out in this technology that you can tell us about?

Kojima: For now, FOX Engine has high performance in developing games on multiple platforms; I think that is the most prominent feature. At this point, it is not an engine that has anything particularly prominent when compared to what’s on the market. From now on, we hope to add features and functions that stand out from other engines.

PSB: Okay, PS Vita has already been revealed. Are you interested in the console? What are the features that draw your attention most to a portable device?

Kojima: As for the multitouch pad on the back of the console, I do not want to force users to use it. The PS Vita has cutting-edge technology and it’s the best there is – especially with integration with the PS3 – and I am very pleased I can offer it to users.

PSB: With the commercial success of L.A. Noire, and the return of cyberpunk with Deus Ex: Human Revolution, do you believe that there is a market for a new Snatcher game?

Kojima: L.A. Noire is a game that I really like, but unfortunately I have not played it. I think it is coming out in Japan today, so when I return, I intend to play it. This idea of an open world in 3D is very good, and I would love to do something like Snatcher, but I do not have the time or the means to do so. But if anyone else would like to develop it, I would love it.

NOTE: A few hours after this interview, Hideo Kojima, in collaboration with Suda 51 and Akira Yamaoka, announced a radio drama called “Sdatcher” based on Snatcher.

PSB: What qualities do you think a game designer needs to be hired in today’s industry?

Kojima: Right now, it’s very similar to movies: You need a lot of money. So rather than doing what you want, doing what you like, you must have a clear idea of marketing and sales. That’s what’s happening to us with FOX Engine; you do not need be an expert in programming to develop a game, but if you have a question, you still need an expert on-hand to provide an answer.

As for expression, that has reached a high level. Video games are trying to reach the peak of entertainment, so game makers should be clear that things like emotion and sound are among the many things that have to be involved.

PSB: How has your perspective from your business point of view and as a game developer changed, now that you are Vice President of Konami Digital?

Kojima: I would like to not change. My priority continues to be to create and produce my own games. Now that I can do this well, I can generate more time to help in other company products, especially in creative ways.

  • Can’t wait to get my hands on these HD games! I love MGS.

  • Ohh yahhh I am gonna buy… Didn’t get a chance to play all versions

  • Me neither, only played Snake Eater and MGS 4.

  • I look forward to this HD collections since i never played an MGS game before but 1 question :P.. will this collection have trophy support?

  • “Kojima: As for the multitouch pad on the back of the console, I do not want to force users to use it.”

    Thank you.

“PSB: Your process of “transfarring” will allow PSP players to take their Peace Walker save files from one console to another, and we will also see similar cross-play support with the PS Vita and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. The future of gaming is buying multiple copies of the same game in order to play it at home and on the go? I sincerely hope not. Take a cue from movies and give us free digital copies for the handheld versions with our purchase of the console ones.

  • Very exciting. I hope there is trophy support that will be across both VITA and PS3 versions.

  • Ask if MGS 4 will get a trophy support :D

  • Yeah! My childhood games are being revamped. Oh how I love the MGS series. Finally a developer gives the fans what they want. *hint to Zipper*

  • Metal Gear Solid. the whole series are games that will live in my mind as great fun to play. I cant wait for these to come thanks Hideo Kojima. i am very pleased to hear this news.

Played Them All and loved them.

  • Looking forward to playing these re-releases when it comes out in November. As well as the Z.O.E. HD collection :)

  • so konami, how come all of you are a bunch of traitors?

  • A few questions:

Will it be Substance and Susbsistence for MGS2 and MGS3? Will it contain MG1 and MG2: Solid Snake?

Will MGS2 contain the Document of MGS2?

I’m not sure how this works but I think it’ll be great if you at least put MGS1 in the collection, even if it doesn’t have trophies and HD. I think this will be easier on the PS3 version since I believe there’s no need to change anything.

    Any pre-order bonus?

  • i am really looking forward to this, especially since I have never really played any of the metal gear games!

  • Ah I think you mean PSP to a PS3 and you wrote “are are” ?

  • I love the fact that Kojima, and Konami are bringing this together for us (yay for awsomesauce!) However, the problem I have is that it feels like this entire blog avoided what I feel to be one of the more “important” questions that should be answered. Price. What is the retail value (price!) going to be for this lovely bundle (<– Pun) of joy? This could actually be something for a change that I may actually be inclined to get.

Also will there be a small bonus like say some smexy (yes, I said "smexy") avatars? Theme(s)? Yes, greedy I know. What can I say? I'm a gamer. I require maximum pwnage and 1337 gear!

  • Disappointing interview, only two questions about the HD Collection, with no new real information.

    But thanks for the post.

  • Megamixer, I disagree with you on one point and agree with you on another:

I could be wrong, but I believe Uncharted on the Vita allows for more traditional control methods of players don’t want to use the touch features.

Regarding the transferring (transfarring is just dumb), I think multiple versions of games should be sold, just like movies. Sell one version with just the home or portable version of the game, and another with both at a slightly higher price.

  • All ya! This is gonna be great, can’t wait for this.

  • I’d love to see trophies for Metal Gear Solid 4.

  • Will get this..

But um ya, Can we have trophies for Metal Gear Solid 4?!

  • As a guy who is so committed to Metal Gear (Even have a FOXHOUND tattoo, beat that), I cannot wait to have these on my PS3. These games defined my childhood and shaped me into who I am today. I seriously cannot wait to get these, and I REALLY can’t wait for Rising to come out.

  • I Thought there was 3D support ?

  • The LEGEND speaks. Hope you feel better and get well soon Kojima-san.

    Thanks for the awesome interview!

  • Favorite Metal Gear moment: Playing the demo of Metal Gear Solid for PSX for way longer than most normal games. I had that initial section memorized forward and back.

  • Trophy support for MGS 4 would indeed be awesome.

  • Gonna love this MGS collection but 1 question:
Will we have to purchase two different copies of the game if we want cross-platform gamplay or will 1 copy include PS3 and Vita versions? Please reply!

  • I’m very excited for the hd collection!!!

  • He is a GOD but he seems to be Micro$oft’s little pet now :D Where are the brilliant PS3 only games then Kojima? It’s been ages since MGS4 came out. I know your ‘Busy’???(yeah busy attending Micro$oft’s E3 shows) :D but i would of rather you spent your time doing Trophies for MGS4? Oh well.

  • Trophies for MGS4 would be great

  • I would like trophies for MGS4, please.

Stop ignoring our calls. A major franchise and it doesn’t even have trophies, I’m ashamed. I still play it now and again but this is one game that deserves trophies! Please.

  • @Rorek_IronBlood

GameStop and Amazon have Kojima’s Bundle Of Awesome (AKA MGS HD Collection) listed at $49.99; no word on pre-order bonuses yet.

Not that it mattered to me. I pre-ordered last week, and I’m playing through Metal Gear Solid on my PS3, to get myself back in the groove.

  • theXsilentXchild

@that-acmilan-guy I saw on the Retail box of MGS4 it says trophies on the back? Hey they still not patched it? If so maybe someone should sue for false advertising.

  • i got so much money to save up

  • theXsilentXchild

    Hey = Have

Also how hard would it of been to squeeze in mgs1?

  • ahhh why no remake of MGS1….sigh

hmmm maybe ill actually finish MGS3…. lol i wasnt a fan but the new graphics and trophies have me intrigued. I moved MGS2.

  • He is the reason why I want a Vita. I like my PS3, don’t like portables so much.

But his support of PS3=Vita is what I want most. This way no one is left out.

Oh and of course, TROPHIES for Metal Gear Solid 4 please.

  • Can’t wait

  • So, are the cutscenes being redone for the HD collection? They weren’t redone on the God of War or Sly collections, but cutscenes weren’t as important in those games. They are a major part of the MGS experience, so hopefully they will be in HD like the games.

Also, 1080p?! Damn! Give me now!

  • I hope they are doing something special with MGS1 since it isn’t being included. Always to hear from one of the greats and I can’t wait for what he is making next. Would we have to buy two versions of the same game to play on Vita and PS3? or would just buying the PSN version of these be enough?

  • @22 – I had the Pizza Hut demo disc with the MGS1 demo on it. I played it more times than I should admit to.

  • Do you people really think the Latin American Blog Manager has the capability to add trophies to MGS4? The game is great as it is. Who needs trophies? Just enjoy the game!

  • Much like Resistance 2…. MGS4 trophy patch won’t happen.. maybe a remake for Vita? who knows.

  • Did I read too fast?
I seen no mention of a release date. I think its November or something. Anyway, this baby is MINE!!!
Easily my favorite series of all time (number 2 though was weak sauce to me imo :(.
I cant wait to see whatever else Kojima does for PS3, and God I hope its exclusive and maxes out the the PStrey!!!

MGS4 still has the best third person shooter mechanics on the market!
    Ability to:
    go prone
    lie on back
roll side to side while on the ground
    dodge roll while aiming
    switch shoulders while aiming
switch to first person mode when aiming
    crawling
    sneaking against walls
    fake death
SO many gameplay options in that game. BEST GAME EVER! anyway, thank you Kojima and his team and Konami for this incredible series. I’m gonna go replay MGS1 now!!!
    :D

  • The only old games that had trophies added were games that already had similar systems to begin with (Uncharted) or had achievements in their other versions (GTA4). Adding trophies to MGS4 would take a lot of extra programming that the original game didn’t have.

  • “The game is great as it is. Who needs trophies? Just enjoy the game!”
    -bnfdhfdhfd

Well said, sir. It’s as if people can’t remember the thrill they got from getting past a tough boss, or beating a game, speed-run style, back in the day. We didn’t need some graphic flashing on the corner of our screen, or some little note being played. The sense of accomplishment was all we needed.

…Dammit, I feel REALLY old right now.

  • Hideo Kojima The MAN
I remember a day when Solid Snake was the KING of Playstation (man I’m old:) Can’t wait—-

  • @FORMIK
“Sell one version with just the home or portable version of the game, and another with both at a slightly higher price.”
Slightly higher price? No movies I’ve bought with digital copies included have had a higher price. Look the the PSN Video Store. You can get HD & SD bundles for the price of just the HD version.

    @JK47NT
“These games defined my childhood and shaped me into who I am today.”
You just made me feel far older then I should feel. :(

    @wardragon989
“Stop ignoring our calls. A major franchise and it doesn’t even have trophies, I’m ashamed.”
GT5 Prologue and Devil May Cry 4 don’t have trophies. What now?

    @Ramen_4_Life
$50 for three games I already own and am still able to play on systems that aren’t broken? Yuck. $40 should be the highest price allowed for these port jobs. Sony set the standard and others followed but I guess it was only a matter of time until SD games got hit with the HD tax.

    @Kchow23
“I hope they are doing something special with MGS1 since it isn’t being included.”
MGS1 has been re-released countless times. It was even in the original MGS Collection. HD’ing a PS1 game must be more work then they care to deal with. They could’ve ported Twin Sna… *shot*

  • These games shouldn’t be on Xbox 360.

The Xbox crowd doesn’t have any history with them and won’t be able to appreciate these masterful games. They will be upset by these games, because they are unlike the Gears of War, Call of Duty, and Battlefield games they play all the time.

    You disappoint me, Konami.

  • @48- you realize that MGS2 was on the original Xbox, right? MGS has always been on multiple systems.

  • I need to pre-order this soon, when I pick up Catherine I will!!

Please we need TROPHY support for MGS4!!! PLEASEEEEEEEEE!!!
