DC Universe Online for PS3

What could possibly be better than battling with thousands of other players online in the first, and only, action MMO on the PS? How about battling FOR FREE? That’s right, DC Universe Online will soon be free to download from the PlayStation Store, and free-to-play with no monthly fees required.

So what’s the catch? There is none. The entire game will be open for you to play for free. We have gotten a lot of feedback from gamers asking for an opportunity to play without a subscription requirement. So, that got us thinking about how to offer access to the game in a way that allows gamers to play their way. We wanted something that would give players options. We know different types of gamers are playing – and want to play – DCUO, and we want each person to be able to play in a way that best fits their style. That’s why we’ve created three levels of access to the game:

DC Universe Online for PS3

  • Free Access – Just like it sounds. Download and play the game for free. You also get all ongoing game updates (except DLC packs).
  • Premium Access – This next level of access opens up to you if you spend at least $5 in the in-game store. Premium Access grants you additional benefits that improve your experience in the game, such as more inventory slots, more character slots, bank slots and more free Vault tickets. So all you have to do is pick up some cool items in the store or buy a DLC pack and you unlock Premium Access. The best part? Once you unlock Premium Access you keep it for the life of your account.
  • Legendary Access – With Legendary Access you can unlock the maximum level of features and benefits. To unlock Legendary Access you can pay for a $14.99 per month game pass, or save big with a discounted multi-month pass. Lifetime members are automatically granted Legendary access. Legendary Access also includes all DLC packs at no extra charge.

DC Universe Online for PS3

I know all of this sounds great for the soon-to-be new players, but it’s just as good for all of you who still play, or used to play. Current players who are currently on a month-to-month or multi-month game pass will automatically be granted Legendary Access for the remaining time on their game pass once we officially transition to free-to-play. They can continue to play and stay at the Legendary Access level, or opt to migrate to another level.

If you used to play DCUO, this gives you a great opportunity to come back and rejoin your old crimefighting (or evil-doing) friends without spending a cent. If you previously purchased DCUO at a retail store or through a PSN download and activated your account, you will automatically be granted Premium Access when you come back.

You can go to our website for more details on the three levels of access, plus a FAQ that should cover any other questions that you may have. We can’t tell you how excited we are to be making this move, and can’t wait to have you all join us in game. Talk to us in the comments below and let us know what you think. We’re listening.

  • So are the bluray discs useless now then?

  • Yes, please reconsider/further research the requirements for trophy support. I don’t believe the information you provided is accurate.

It just seems to cause any necessary problems. (eg. what if I start free and miss a trophy, but then pay . will I get credit for prior actions? will I be able to complete again?)

That said, I am definitely interested in playing the game and am far more likely to spend a few bucks each month under the current model opposed to zero under the old plan.

The whole trophy decision just seems unnecessary and I bet is more likely to cost more than it brings in.

    Thank you for your time.

  • @mcbuttz78…Do you have an official site and what is it?…Whoever has DCUO can add me Deathspear666..I have 2 characters good and bad lol

  • If i where to buy the blu-ray disc now, will i still get the Legendary Access?

  • Its hilarious that they show PC shots here rather than PS3.

Pretty fun game though, i played the beta for a few hours. I might pay for a month just to have everything because i think thats about how long i’d play it anyway.

  • If im premium do I get trophies? or is it just 15 bucks a month people who get that. Also if I just get premium am I locked out of powers and outfits that the 15 bucks people only get?

  • IGN is reporting that the Green Lantern DLC is free for current subscribers. Is that true?

  • So; wait… We get Arkham City and DCUO in the same month (“possibly”); Awesome! My friend and I had participated in the Beta almost every day and both of us were bummed when we found out how astronomical the pricing was. Now that it’s going to be F2P, I can drop some cash (when I want) on the DLC instead of watching it disappear monthly. Another great move by PS3!!

  • Cool! I always wanted to try it, but never wanted to make the full commitment due to not being sure if I would like it or not. I personally like this option and am stoked to give it a try! Is there a date when this is all going live? I didn’t see one, unless I’m blind…it happens sometimes, lol

  • I have the DCUO disk version (with 30 day trial), Will I still be able to get trophies? Or do you need to be a paid subscriber?
    Would appreciate an answer, cheers!

  • When DCUO first came out I was saying this game would be free to play in year or less and other members pretty much laughed at me saying that would never happen and look what they doing going free to play

  • “So what’s the catch? There is none.”

    say wwwwwwwwwhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaattttttttttttt

it looks like there is a big catch as in pay us more money or go without some stuff like trophies

  • AWESOME SAUCE X100!!!! I WILL BE RE-DOWNLOADING THIS FOR SURE..

  • Great thank you Sony!! When DCUO first came out I was like, “Oh yea I’m getting this!” Then I heard about having to pay for it and I was like, “Forget it.” Glad that I don’t now. Im picking it up soon!

  • a easy solution to trophies is wait till the game is free, after a week the bluray disc will be worthless and less than 5.00 at any gamestop, buy the disc and the trophies will be unlockable because you own the disc game.

  • niiiiceeee i’ve always wanted to play this :D:D

  • yesssssssssss, really wanted to try the game but i couldn’t because of the monthly fee

  • I can’t wait! Thanks!!

  • AWESOMESAUCE!

  • AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME. Can’t wait for this bought the game brand spanking new played it for the first 30 days free then didn’t have the money to pay it monthly so I stopped playing it. Thought I was kinda beat out of $60. But you guys have fixed that for me AWESOME thank you to SONY!!!!! When can we expect it to be free?

GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!! GO SONY!!!

  • so if i pay for a month and get all the dlc for free and if i cancel to next month do i still keep all the dlc?

    • Unless you have bought the DLC separately then when you drop back down to the Premium level you will lose access to that content.

  • So cool. I cantbwait. I loved the beta.

  • I was just thinking about getting this last week but I remembered I had to save my money for the zombies map pack

  • Nice. I have never played an MMO before but will check this out when it goes free to play. Monthly fees and the fact I like to game on consoles and not my computer kept me from trying them. Should be fun to play as a DC character. May even check out the DLC if I am getting the game for free.

  • If I have the disk version and only used my free month, does that mean I get premium access?

  • What price do I have to pay to get all the trophies except DLC?

  • whoa, this is awesome

  • This is a nice idea but you guys at SOE have included way to many stipulations for me to get behind this idea.

Trophies are locked out unless I pay.
Level restrictions in effect unless I pay.
Passes take priority over eachother – which require me to pay.
DLC expires unless I pay (have to pay twice just to play what I’ve already bought).

This is just a ploy to get more people on and hopefully – they’ll end up paying.

    No thanks.

  • Way too many stipulations here.

    Trophies = have to pay
    Passes = have to pay
Level restrictions gone = have to pay
DLC actaully expires and to keep it playable = have to pay.

    No thank you.

  • I think I should get at least premium access since I had to buy the game and I got the special edition version.

    • Anyone who has had a valid account before the conversion but is not a current subscriber will be automatically be converted to a Premium player so no worries.

      Lorin

  • You still have to pay..

  • SWEET! I never could bring myself to pay for a game and then pay more just to play it………didnt make sense to me. Cant wait for my cheap @$$ to finally get to try it out!!!

  • game pass to play games online sounds really bad, its just like u have to pay for online on PC but now its on PS games that is bad move for any company. Thats just what i think & most people can pay for it or not; i pay alot of $ when i play FF11 on my PC. TO bad FF11 is not on PS3, but lucky FF14 will be on PS3 next year soon.

Well if i release my own game world wide i’ll make sure to have it free for my fans. ;) Overall DC Universe is okay game in my book so charging for it is okay.

  • Yes! Thank you for answering my question. :)

  • So how come people who actually purchased the game get treated the same as someone who only drops $5 on it?

  • You all know what a game going free to play means? It’s not doing well. But at least they still have a 15 a month plan so it’s not total BS that they’re doing this. However only trophies for legendary members… come on now… Should have gotten the platinum when i had a free month.

  • Very cool, maybe I’ll give it a try then….maybe.

  • So if we bought the game already, we automatically get Premium Access? For how long?

  • This is great news. I was part of the BETA and really had a good time with that. Not a $15 a month good time, though. No game is worth paying a subscription fee for. I’d buy a 360 if I wanted to do that. But I will definitely be getting this and probably download, at least, $5 of DLC just to be able to earn trophies.

Do we have an exact date for this?

  • @BuchNasty

You’re actually complaining about trophies on a Free to Play game? What did you do when you played a PS2 or any system that wasn’t a 360 or PS3? That’s just sad.

  • Pretty cool, but only awarding something as basic as trophies to paying members is a poor choice.

  • Will PlayStation Plus members get Legendary access? Is that a Possibility?
…Is there anything beneficial to Plus members?!?!?

Also I bought the collectors edition, played for a while then stopped at April. I made about 8 Characters. I read online that if you’re a free 2 play member, you are only allowed a maximum of two character slots. What will happen to my other characters?

  • Just to be clear, though, there are no trophies for Premium Members, right?

  • quick question plz respond checked faq and didnt see a answer to question…. so if i start off with free to play and play lets say for a month then upgrade to legendary do the trophies i would have unlocked underneath legendary from the get go just pop up or will i then have to restart and do the trophies over.

  • Scenario: I start out playing F2P or Premium. Later on, I pay the fee to upgrade to Legendary. Do I then earn the trophies I would have had I been playing Legendary all along (i.e. are they retroactive?), or do I have to start all new characters?

Sorry, but trophies are not mentioned in the F2P FAQ.

  • Awesome! I played the beta and really enjoyed other than the bugginess. I never heard if that was fixed for the release but I’m very excited to play in October! I’m sure I’ll at least get to premium level

  • This would have been a good opportunity to provide extra bonuses to PS+ subscribers…..

  • I must say this is a pleasant surprise :-). I think that this is probably the best and fairest business model for an MMOG on a console. It gives new players the opportunity to try out the game like a demo, and decide whether they want to continue to invest in it or not. While those who do like the game and want to subscribe continue on like nothing as changed.

I commend you guys on your effort to bring this to the masses ;-) and I look forward to trying it out again.

    Wolf26pack

  • Yes! This is fantastic news. I’ve been wanting to check this out for a long time but wasn’t cool with the monthly charge.

All I need to know is when I can download it.

  • I forget, is this game cross platform on ps3 and pc? Not sure if I want it for ps3, but want to play with friends on ps3 from my pc.
