DC Universe Online for PS3

What could possibly be better than battling with thousands of other players online in the first, and only, action MMO on the PS? How about battling FOR FREE? That’s right, DC Universe Online will soon be free to download from the PlayStation Store, and free-to-play with no monthly fees required.

So what’s the catch? There is none. The entire game will be open for you to play for free. We have gotten a lot of feedback from gamers asking for an opportunity to play without a subscription requirement. So, that got us thinking about how to offer access to the game in a way that allows gamers to play their way. We wanted something that would give players options. We know different types of gamers are playing – and want to play – DCUO, and we want each person to be able to play in a way that best fits their style. That’s why we’ve created three levels of access to the game:

DC Universe Online for PS3

  • Free Access – Just like it sounds. Download and play the game for free. You also get all ongoing game updates (except DLC packs).
  • Premium Access – This next level of access opens up to you if you spend at least $5 in the in-game store. Premium Access grants you additional benefits that improve your experience in the game, such as more inventory slots, more character slots, bank slots and more free Vault tickets. So all you have to do is pick up some cool items in the store or buy a DLC pack and you unlock Premium Access. The best part? Once you unlock Premium Access you keep it for the life of your account.
  • Legendary Access – With Legendary Access you can unlock the maximum level of features and benefits. To unlock Legendary Access you can pay for a $14.99 per month game pass, or save big with a discounted multi-month pass. Lifetime members are automatically granted Legendary access. Legendary Access also includes all DLC packs at no extra charge.

DC Universe Online for PS3

I know all of this sounds great for the soon-to-be new players, but it’s just as good for all of you who still play, or used to play. Current players who are currently on a month-to-month or multi-month game pass will automatically be granted Legendary Access for the remaining time on their game pass once we officially transition to free-to-play. They can continue to play and stay at the Legendary Access level, or opt to migrate to another level.

If you used to play DCUO, this gives you a great opportunity to come back and rejoin your old crimefighting (or evil-doing) friends without spending a cent. If you previously purchased DCUO at a retail store or through a PSN download and activated your account, you will automatically be granted Premium Access when you come back.

You can go to our website for more details on the three levels of access, plus a FAQ that should cover any other questions that you may have. We can’t tell you how excited we are to be making this move, and can’t wait to have you all join us in game. Talk to us in the comments below and let us know what you think. We’re listening.

  • Also, once this game goes free, will the remainder of bluray disc become free? Or, do we still have to pay for it? I would like most of the game to be on disk and not all of it on the harddrive.

  • Once we pay for the premium, do we keep it for life?

  • I can play on a BR account ?

  • @151 – if you read his responses, the answer is no. They won’t be selling the disc anymore once this goes into effect.

  • This is wat im waiting for, im so happy , i remember buying this with regret and now i think those things have changed after reading the article…..cant wait for this legendary acces here I come^^

  • What do those that have already bought the disc for the game get?

  • When a paid game become free with so few months online…that means one thing to me:
“It sux somehow, and they r desperated for public”

  • So I didn’t want to pay full price for the game and then monthly. I played the beta and loved it but with other MMO’s cheaper to buy with the monthly I passed on it. Now I’m happy to say I will be downloading the game and signing up for the monthly fee!! Thank you so much and I can’t wait to see you online!!

  • One thing thgough, due to the HUGE install size I would love to have the game on disc without having to pay full price for it!!!

  • I played the beta, it was okay I expected the beta to be buggy like it was. Hopefully the full version is better. Is this how all MMOs going to be now F2P???

  • Nice! I am not a huge fan of MMO but I do like Champions Online, so I might like this, especially if I can create a Batman character.:P That premium level sounds a lot better then I thought. If it just paying $5 for whatever in this game then I probably go for it.

  • Just wondering if PS3 users will ever get the life-time plan. i mean i for one would rather pay all that money than contently pay, pay, pay. granted i like that its going to be free to play so i can play again as i bought the game back at launch.

    Seriously cannot wait!

  • WOW! All of you who are complaining about this game costing so much at the beginning grow up! Obviously they realized the mistake and are fixing it.

  • Tsk tsk, so tight with the trophies.

    Shame.

  • So i was in the beta for dcuo and i was wondering since now it’s going f2p can i keep the data downloaded on my ps3 and use that when it goes f2p in october or will i have to download another 15gb game version of dcuo? Is the dcuo beta data the same as the retail game?

  • i have a few questions

    1. do we need to buy the game to play it for free or we can just download it from PSN for free and play it for free?

    2. can you use your money in your PSN to pay to become premium or legendary?

    3. do we need to keep paying to stay as premium or legendary?

  • $5 for premium sounds good to me

  • That’s awsome!!! I always wanted to play DC univers free!!!! Thanks of being, Playstation!

  • Sony’s biggest MISTAKE with DCUO is: They didn’t make the game cross platform with the PC users ! Which I don’t understand why they couldn’t make it work when Valve was able to do for the PS3 & PC versions of Portal 2 which came out earlier this year

  • its about time the game became a free-to-play title because i wasnt going to pay to play online. but anyways, is there going to be a lifetime legendary membership for those that want that status?

  • this is not sony fixing mistakes, lmao. this is sony re-marketing a game which is one that requires maintenance and management just like many other mmo’s. in other words costs money to run and when a company produces anything they number crunch and have certain expectations etc, well when one is missing the mark and the overhead/management costs to profit ratio is not balanced in favor of gains, well one either has to pull the plug or try a new approach. sorry to break the news but just like any other company, sony is committed to make money. and in the end, the better sony does the better we do. so this is good news to dcuo fans, but to all new comers please do the research in regards to buying this game and playing it “free” opposed to “legendary”/membership.
“clark kent” or “superman” . i have played for a few months and micro management for hero does require thought but more importantly money. so playing catch up as a lvl one “free-lancer” will have one questioning the purchase of this game, but if you are willing to pay monies then its a fun game and the monthly fee may be more appealing in regards to what it comes with.

  • my only intention with my post is to help others who may be on the fence or need some input in regards to what the “free” will offer and its a gateway into the universe and all the features/dlc it has to offer for a price, depending on the content it is that you want or need. this is a time when some may need to strategically manage one’s monies in order to make purchases of games that will be releasing in the near future, meaning purchasing this one may scratch out one on a list for games coming out. if money isnt an issue then this isnt a bad purchase, but free is misleading, this is my opinion because i have never played it free. but from the information i have gathered it is a way to introduce you into the universe, rather than buying it and then being like “wtf i want to be like that dudes hero” and then coming to the conclusion that there are dedicated players who do not mind the fee because all major mmo’s charge a monthly/yearly fee will have a severe advantage over those who play “free”. and there will be some catch up. so by no means am i saying dont buy this game, i am just saying be prepared to encounter feelings of needs which require funds/purchasing.

  • This most likely has been answered. I bought the game and I get premium access will my trophies still be obtainable or do I have to pay for another subscription?

  • so last but not least, if in fact you do have a list made up in regards to games releasing soon but dont really want to spend money because it will effect an upcoming purchase but feelings of boredom are telling you ” minutes seem like days and games are taking forever to get here!!” and you are buying this just to bridge the gap between now and then, well my advice is to be patient because dcuo will ultimately either become a waste of money or a lot of fun by means of paying for certain fees and content, and there really isnt a medium. so just keep that in mind, retail along with monthly fee/slots/microtransactions etc.. it is a very fun game, many ways to build hero along with a good amount of villans and pvp is always fun.
my suggestion is to google 10 things i wish i knew before i got dcuo or research the game how you wish before making your decision. i dont mind certain fee’s and transactions because all mmo’s have them and its just the way it is. so if you are buying this based on winging it w/ the “free” way to play, well just keep in mind that a feeling of “lacking” will occur and i am a hard core gaming nut just like most of you and i dont like to lack anything.

  • so as far as this game , well its a very fun game especially if you are a fan of mmo’s or d.c. even if you are not , well the game is a blast to play.. and the fact that it is a sony product etc is a plus in regards to supporting the “home team” just keep in mind that “free” does come w/ a catch.. but all mmo’s do. and require fee’s due to server maintenance etc.. but again this a different way to market a game and introduce players into the universe. this is good news for dcuo players in regards to sony’s efforts to keep dcuo healthy but it is unfortunate that this was not implemented from the start, and it always seems that the loyal / first to pay and play always end up getting the short end of the stick and are left with questions about trophies, new interlacing w/ old membership to the new/current layout etc. more importantly this is a creation of dcuo not meeting expectations and finding a way to swing the profit/overhead balance. nothing more nothing less. but maybe pre-existing members should get some sort of dlc/bonus would be a great show of showing commitment to those who have showed the same for dcuo since release.

  • superb , i didnt buy the game because im not paying to play online , now i will be able to play it and no problem i will invest those $5

  • I’m wondering. What will happen to the physical copies at retail stores? Will they go down in price or something? I’m curious because I noticed the collector’s edition is still in stock in some stores and I want to get it.

  • Oh, yeah. I forgot to add. I’m glad it’s becoming free to play. I’ve been wanting to play this for a while, but I never had the money for it. Since it’s coming out next month, I’ll consider it a birthday present you didn’t know you gave me. ^_^

  • Great, now some of my friends who did not want to pay the $15 a month can play, I’m going to keep paying for my legend pack because I was planing to do that anyway, and if I have to I can just drop to Premium. Thank you Sony

  • I like the sound of playin it for free but, why have 3 levels, ANYONE CAN ADD ME 2 PLAY

  • This sounds like a cool idea. I will be checking this out as soon as it is available.
Huum, I wonder how vast of a character I can create ?

  • YEAH!!!!

  • I might check it out now,

  • But What if you have the game on Disc for the PS3 I mean is it free to play for the online I guess I’ll wait and see if it’s true or not

  • Hey SOE how about some DC Universe Online Avatars. Heck how about some DC Comics The New 52 Avatars. I’d buy all 52 avatars. “Shut up and Take My Money”

  • I’ll buy anything sony tells me to buy

  • This is such a slap in the face to everyone who has supported this game to this point. Not only did they spend anywhere between $60-$150 for the game plus some monthly fees now they have to continue to pay for a game that everyone else is going to get for 100% free.

What a nightmare for those poor bastards

  • So basically I just paid $30 for a $10 download. Individuals can come online, for free and pay $10 and get the new Fight for Light expansion and enjoy the same DLC that I just paid $30 to enjoy. My subscription expires on Nov. 13th, I doubt I’ll be renewing this subscription seeing how we first become one large mega server which doesn’t offer a larger realm with less waiting time for Arenas and PVP duos and raids.

Now, we have tiers to play. I don’t like the direction this is going, and certainly don’t appreciate that my subscription was basically $30 so I could play a $10 expansion.

No legendary armor, or PVP armor for those who have been with you since February? I have six characters I play as online and I can’t imagine continuing to do so after all this has come to light.

  • Also, a free digital copy of the game? You can download the full version of the game from the PS store for free? This is incredible… so if we have purchased a retail copy of the game and it was $80 (I bought the collector’s edition) we get nothing for our loyalty?

  • Wikichu has a point. There must be some incentive for those that were there since day 1 one or/and have purchased the game. Sony stop screwing over your fans. As usual you won’t respond.

  • if i buy a soe card and by stuff in the in the game will thatgive me premium or do i have to use credit card

  • Sony can we please get some more feed back please. The FAQ doesn’t answer all our questions.

  • I will definetly get this now. But I have to ask, if you want people to subscribe to Legendary are you going to AT LEAST do what you said you were going to and release massive monthly updates and weekly patches if needed?

  • i agree with VectorRaven but when is it coming out i was checking it in playstation store but its not fair for me so id it coming out next month this is ezio6387 saying…. that i should speak to kevin butler

  • Oh, what a terrible scam. I bought the regular edition day 1. I payed about $75 in monthly subscriptions added along that. Now just to be able to be treated like I actually bought the game at full retail price, I have to pay another $15. It’s also terribly unfair how the people who join and spend $5 bucks are treated the same as the ones who have put $100+ into this game. I’m disappointed in Sony. :(

  • Also, about this trophy support crap. I put $100+ into this game. So, no, this isn’t free. I deserve trophy support on a game I bought.

  • I want all the trophies that came with my retail copy of the game. That’s at least what those of us who have stupidly supported you since January 10th deserve. Since we did pay for it, and we must pay for trophies now, that’s what we will get. Right? All 12 (or whatever the number is) of them that have to do with working to level cap. And don’t say it can’t be done without me paying because I obviously already have.

    @ 190 & 198

Thank you for having enough common sense to get it. It seemsd like sanity and common sense is in short supply here.
