PlayStation Nation – “Long Live Play” Celebrates YOU

Long Live Play: Celebrates You!

Hello PlayStation Nation,

Early last month, with some ambiguity, we announced that we were looking for a few good gamers to assist us with a special assignment related to our freshly launched Long Live Play campaign. Long Live Play honors gamers from all walks of life and recognizes you for making PlayStation who we are today.

We asked members of the PlayStation Nation to email us with pictures of themselves holding their PS3 controller and in 30 words-or-less, describe how they epitomize the ultimate PlayStation gamer. I know that PlayStation gamers are some of the most impassioned fans in the world, but I was blown away by the thousands of responses that flooded my email.

After weeks of anticipation, I can finally reveal the complete ambition behind Long Live Play. I’m delighted to announce that we’ve painstakingly reviewed each submission and selected a dozen or so die-hard gamers to represent the PlayStation Nation in a brand new Long Live Play campaign that will air on national TV starting October 5th. We think this film provides an insider’s look into what it’s like to be immersed in our universe and why it’s so compelling to game on the PS3.

For those already initiated into the Nation, I think you’ll find this film almost like a game itself. You’ll see a rich layering of different characters from some of your favorite game franchises – including cool everyman Nathan Drake from UNCHARTED, the mighty Kratos from God of War, the nimble Sackboy from LittleBigPlanet, and a monstrous Chimera from Resistance – all gathered together saluting “YOU” the PlayStation gamer. We spent months building out this experience and loaded it with numerous PlayStation Easter eggs. I’m pretty confident it will take several viewings before you find them all. Towards the end of the film be sure to notice the collection of photos of your fellow members of the Nation. This is one small way of demonstrating our sincere “Thanks” and to celebrate your tremendous commitment to PlayStation’s thriving community. And with PS3s available for under $250 – we welcome all gamers to come on board to experience the best in Blu-ray gaming.

It is our hope that this film showcases to all gamers the incredible characters and experiences that make PlayStation 3 the ultimate platform for people who love to game. You know that PlayStation has the industry’s best line-up of exclusive software titles, features highly immersive motion-control and 3D gaming, and free access to vast amounts of sports, movies, TV, games and more on PlayStation Network. Now, with your help, we’re spreading the word so the world knows that PlayStation continues to be the top destination for gaming.

Long Live Play!

  • People who keep asking, “Who’s Michael?” Did you read the post, or just click on the video blindly?

It’s a new campaign in which they highlight some of the gamers that support the PlayStation brand. Gamers were asked to send in photos of themselves holding a PlayStation controller, and Sony chose this PS Fan, Michael, for their debut spot.

Anyway, this was pretty awesome and cheesy at the same time. I tnought it was really cool. Like the guy that played Cole, and was Nathan chatting up Lightning? Lol. Elena disapproves…

  • Awesome video!!!!!!!!! Made me feel good to be a PS3 owner!!!

  • To us Sony!

  • I loved the video. Please pass along my appreciation to all the actors that contributed there characters to the commercial as well. Just amazing. All those characters expressing their thanks to the player that controls their actions – it’s really inventive.

It sounds like we’re in for more of these commercials and I can’t wait to see them.

  • Not sure the purpose behind this, but that was awesome! :)

  • This is such an awesome commercial.

  • My name is Michael, I feel celebrated. Awesome add Sony! Long Live Play!!!!

  • Groovy…. now air it during programs that potential buyers will watch………

  • To say who the hell is Michael and ignore the last five seconds is a shame.

Even though it doesn’t specify you yourself the ad does its part by showing not just a wall but the ceiling covered with pictures of gamers.

Kick ass commercial, anyone know if that’s all the actual voice actors?

I know that’s Nathan Fillion as Drake and odds are high on that being Cole, but what about Snake?
Was a behind the scenes video made?

  • very good commercial, i liked it but this

NO just no…. sony you are going to the wrong path…

  • ahhhh geez you CAN’T tease a big announcement and have it be for an AD CAMPAIGN when you have fans DYING for imminent big announcements like Vita’s release date!!!! that was kinda poor judgement there, sony. i’m a little disappointed. go to your room.

  • That was pretty freakin’ fantastic (would it be too cheesy to emphasize the “FAN” in fantastic?). I don’t think I’ve EVER seen Nintendo or Microsoft pay such fan service before. This was brilliant.

    Thank you!

  • That really looks like Nathan Drake! Wow, that was a fun commercial! The actors & voice work was great! Good work Sony! XD

  • COOLEST THING I’VE EVER SEEN.

    12

  • Please make sure I can download this on my PS3!!!

  • funniest thing ever i like this alot

  • Having the voice actors as the characters was amazing.

  • It was kinda cheesy, but very freaking cool and kind of emotive. LLP and LLPS3!

  • Give the man who created this a raise.

  • @46

I agree with you about the commercial; it was nice to see Snake and other characters together :)

    but

“Quit expecting soo much from one company that actually […] not always about making money!!!!”

Are you sure of that? They’re trying to sell you a PS3 in this very same commercial.

  • Wow, all the effort, wasted.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great ad, but for those of us who were sent the agreement to sign, it seems like a bit of a disappointment. You can’t see any of the faces in the photos, apart from ‘Michael’, so where exactly is our recognition for being what Sony asked us to prove we were; the Ultimate Playstation Gamers?

Again, great ad, I’m sure it will be well received. Just would have liked to have actually gotten a bit more ‘face’ time. Or some money for my PSN wallet.

    You know, something. 8/

    Oh well. Long Live Play.

  • One of the best trailers I’ve ever seen. Some people may be disappointed but at the end of the day it’s a genius idea for marketing.

  • Epic! Loved the video because of seeing well-known game characters! Cool!

  • So, what about the other 11? Are there going to be 11 other similar commercials? If the release I faxed and re-faxed was just for this one commercial, I’m going to be a little disappointed. I didn’t even see myself on that wall. I find it hard to believe that anyone would be able to make themselves out with such tiny pictures.

  • ….Not that I’m expecting a reply, mind you.

  • Sweet video, I am anxious to see the others as I was selected to be in one. Yay! As far as the teaser I really thought there was going to be a big announcement of some sort. Oh well I am cool with this, maybe ill be able to see myself in an upcoming commercial! Nice that they are look back at the gamers themselves.

  • The agreement we signed was only for the ‘Michael’ ad, nothing else, so there aren’t going to be anymore like this.

  • …cool commercial nonetheless. I’ll pass on the new PS3, though. Mine still works perfectly. ;)

  • @127 The agreement also allows Sony to use the images in the future, so I wouldn’t say that’s a fact.

  • Sony: Please recreate this Pub in Home so we can interact with the characters and upload our own photo to the (virtual) walls :-)

  • That was awesome.

  • @Kryshalis – Ah, cool. Maybe we will then.

Have to say though, Sony specifically ask for photos of us ‘in our favorite playing environment, but all those photos seem to be just head/upper body shots.

All strange. But like has been said, who are we to question???

  • @joostin:
Microsoft makes you register your copy of Windows so that you don’t make a copy and sell it while still keeping Windows on your system. When have you ever registered your copy of a PS3 game. If people were making copies of the games and selling those while still keeping it, then I’d have no problem with the online pass formula. You’re right that devs are only making money on the first sale, but that’s all they were ever going to make anyway (like how musicians didn’t get paid for used cd sales back in the day). There are much more consumer friendly ways of making money from used games. DLC is the best way to do it. If they just want to promote buying new vs buying used, then use the id software formula of benefiting new buyers without hurting used buyers. The online pass only hurts consumers for participating in a legal practice.

  • @djnealb

But not every game needs to be played online, right? Yes, it’s sucky that developers are doing this, but it’s not going to kill the used game market, at least not the whole market.

But anyway, if it’s really that a bad a thing, then let the market decide. If people don’t want to support this kind of practice, then they will stop buying games from developers who do it.

  • I hate the PS3 community. You people live to complain and nothing else. Worst gaming community I have ever been a part of in my life, and I been gaming since Intellivision. Complete embarrassment.

  • @ djnealb

I didn’t mean register your copy of Windows. I mean, even if you buy a pirated copy or try to install a copy lent to you by a friend, it will install, but will tell you it is not genuine and will direct you to the M$ support page to purchase a license for around the same price as a store bought copy. It is just a way of protecting your Intellectual property. I can’t see how Online Pass hurts the industry. Say you get a steal of a deal on NHL 11 used for $15-20. Add another $10 and you got a fully functioning game for $30. That is still a deal! All Online Pass will do is force used game retailers to lower their prices in order to compensate with the extra cost to the end user. Used game sales are legal, but in a very grey area. Intellectual Property is governed by a different set of rules than other products. Are upset with iTunes for the DRM they have on the MP3’s they sell? It is protecting the artist, designer, developer. With used game, music, movie sales you are making 1 copy available to potentially an unlimited amount of people. This is no different from buying a bluray, ripping it to your PC, then uploading it to a torrent site or newsgroups.

  • AWESOME!!!
Can I please download that onto my HDD? Please!!! Make it available on the store. I’m glad to be a PS3 gamer. Best console ever.

  • @KwietStorm

But is that the PS3 community, or just society in general?

  • That is the best commercial of all time. OF. ALL. TIME.

  • Great ad lol. “To Micheal” lol. But I thought that there was gonna be more of a patch or something new that would be out in the upcoming months.

  • Loved the video.

  • I liked it. I must admin I was waiting for Kevin Butler.

  • TO MICHAEL!!!
Long Live Michael, Long Live Sony IPs, LONG LIVE PLAY!!!!!!!!!

  • I remember seeing the first little peace of this last week. Nice a s s commercial lol Now hurry up and give us our big a s s 4.0 update…..

  • Wow that was amazing – goood :P Nice Campaign Sony :D

  • This is a really damn cool commercial. You guys should pat yourselves on the back. Makes me want to change my name to Michael

  • That was a great commerical and all with all those iconic game figures bunched up all in a single room but when I saw that teaser trailer, as a long time gamer I was hoping for something to be behind that hype that would live up to it. As such this reveal for a commercial is a real let down on my behalf.

Gamers don’t live for videoes about games; they live to play the video games! WHERE’S THE BEEF!?!

  • thanks but how about putting that much effort into some cool new features for the system like a new browser flash support and things that make me proud to own a ps3 some new features or something.

  • Great Love it!!!
